We are redoing our website and we have removed / renamed a few old pages. I was wondering if I can do 301 redirect for removed / renamed pages without having to actually create them? To explain with an example:
On old website : www.domain.com/mypage.php On new website: www.domain.com/mynewpage.php
I created a 301 redirect in .htaccess redirecting mypage.php to www.domain.com/mynewpage.php without physically creating "mypage.php" file. When I access "www.domain.com/mypage.php", I get a 404 page not found error. When I create a blank "mypage.php", the redirection works fine.
Is it possible to do a 301-redirect without having to create old files ?
just noticed these errors could this be a hacker or something?

We use Apache as part of a 'consumer' software which as been working fine with Apache 2.0.64 (running as a 'regular' user). We want to transition to version 2.4, but it seems to be working a little bit differently than the 2.0 version.
In httpd.conf, we have "ErrorLog logs/error.log". With version 2.0, the error.log file is created in the "...AppDataLocalVirtualStore..." path (since user cannot write to 'Program Files (x86)' were it is installed), but with version 2.4.10 we only get an "Access is denied. AH00015: Unable to open logs" error. Is this a known difference between 2.0 and 2.4.
I was trying to set up archive-my-tweets [URL] .... and I seem to have gotten stuck with a 403 error. When I remove the .htaccess file the 403 goes away but so do the rewrite rules so that's a problem.
You'll see the contained .htaccess file that's included in the project.
Basically for now I'm just trying to run this on my mac. I have set up the files in a subdirectory of my personal web server. The personal web server is working fine--but when I go to the /tweets directory I get the 403.
I hired a full time web designer to help me create the site but I'm wondering what else I'm missing.
I'm guessing I'm going to need a high end dedicated server with an 100mb unmetered port? How much space should I be looking for? The file size is going to be limited to 150mb per download and if the files have not been downloaded in 2 weeks they will be deleted. What type of HDD space should I be looking for?
I have placed a Content Management System on an Apache server using Cpanel and when I try to install I get messages about folders and files needing permission changes, then after installation some modules won't work because of wrong permissions. The solution to make everything work is to set all folders and files to 0777 but then that would just open up to insecurity. Also I can't set files to 0444 using an FTP client. It can only be done via Cpanel's file manager.
I install the same CMS on another hosting service with the same Apache/Cpanel config and it does not require any CHMOD. The app installs without errors and functions correctly with folders at 0755 and files at 0644.
It seems most shared hosting nowadays work as the latter statement so what could be the cause why the other hosting server require all the permission changes?
We are using WHMCS with Plesk 9.2 which was working all perfect but from last few days when ever we click on "CREATE" hosting account module in WHMCS it gives us the following message.
Module Command Error CURL Error: 28 - Operation timed out after 100 seconds with 0 bytes received
we tried to contact WHMCS support and they says its related to Plesk and parallels say its related to WHMCS now i am stuck between these 2 companies!
On my VPS SUPHP with PHP 5.2.9 and MySQL 5.0.77 is running absolutely fine.
Suddenly without making any change on the server today i got a 500 internal server error. I don't think there is any permission problem.
Now i change the PHP5 Handler to "cgi" so everything is normal but if i change that to suphp then showing "500 internal server error" anyone can tell the reason of the problem.... Apache suexec is "on" but off also doesn't make any change?
There is any cache/temp file folder for suphp which is filled or some other problem?
I am new to Parallels software, more specifically Parallels Panels. I have installed a trial copy of the software on my Windows 2008 R2 SP1. This is a Dedicated machine with no other users on it. I presume installation of Panels was successful because I can log in and see the admin control panel. I created a customer with success. I am now trying to create a subscription using the default service plan. After entering all the appropriate info on the new subscription page and submitting it, a few moments later I receive the following error:
Error: Filename: ?C:Inetpubvhosts estyourwebhostingprosite.comhttpdocsweb.config Error: The configuration section 'system.webServer/rewrite/rules' cannot be read because it is missing a section declaration In module Exception type: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException at Microsoft.Web.Administration.Interop.AppHost
We get this same error on every subscription we create. It doesn't seem to affect anything but it's more of an annoyance than anything. It did it on plesk 11.5 and now with plesk 12.
Mostly it works fine but if there is a 404 then i get a 403 permission denied error instead of the error page. the folder that contains the error page does have a <directory> bit for it and i even tried adding it into the virtual host but i get the same result.
if the file does exist then it loads like normal
can anyone see any problems with my config or do i have to do something diff for 2.2.6?
I had to switch to Apache 2 from Lighttpd and I'm running into a little bit of trouble trying to make it handle all my traffic. I'm using the worker MPM module, which has the following default config:
I have kind of inherited this server from another person so I'm not totaly sure how it was set up. It is a:
red hat machine running 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp kernel running apache 2.0.52(red hat)
at any rate this server mainly serves up images but also a few video encoded in flash(.swf files). Basically the issue at hand is there are a few domain names that all point to this server but only one domain name will let the .swf files stream correctly. All other domain names will wait for the whole thing to download before playing. I'm pretty new to apache 2, but I do know apache 1 pretty well. I'm not totally sure where to start with all this. The server is set up with no virtual hosting for each domain which I think could a problem.
recently i created a domain subscription with 3 alias domains. Thanafter i created a sub domain to a folder in the main domain. At first all went fine but after deleting the alias domains subdomains ans domain supscrption to register all the 4 domains each seperately a problem accured and i cant add any subdomain to none of the 4 domains. registering the domains themselves as individual domain works for each one perfect. But as soon as i try to add a subdomain on any of that 4 domains i get an error that the dns data could not be updated. As it looks like there is still some codes in the plesk database that links to 4 domains in any kind together and prevents me to creste a subdomain.
How can i manually remove all the domains subdomains and alias domain garbage from the plesk database. I use windows version of plesk panel 11.0.9 on windows 2008 server datacenter edition. I have good skils in IT but im not familiar with mysql and plesk. how to remove the records from plesk Mysql database. Command line commands internal commands locations that have to be altered and all other needed steps.
