Apache :: 2.0 Wrote Error Log File In Virtual Store But Not 2.4

Jan 30, 2015

We use Apache as part of a 'consumer' software which as been working fine with Apache 2.0.64 (running as a 'regular' user). We want to transition to version 2.4, but it seems to be working a little bit differently than the 2.0 version.

In httpd.conf, we have "ErrorLog logs/error.log". With version 2.0, the error.log file is created in the "...AppDataLocalVirtualStore..." path (since user cannot write to 'Program Files (x86)' were it is installed), but with version 2.4.10 we only get an "Access is denied. AH00015: Unable to open logs" error.Is this a known difference between 2.0 and 2.4.

Apache :: CIFS File Share To Store Images

Mar 28, 2014

I recently started building out a new network rack to provide a production web site. The new equipment stack includes a disk array providing a CIFS file share to store images to be served up by Apache.

I have had zero luck in getting Apache to properly access the imagestore from the network share. I've read more Google pages on this subject today than I can count, but I am still not having any success getting this working right.

I'll do my best to explain the configuration.

I have an ESXi host running several virtual machines. Each machine needs to be able to access the shares. Each host has multiple network interfaces, each connected to a separate subnet. The virtual machines are running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter edition.

The disk array is file mode access, with NFS and CIFS shares. It has interfaces on both subnets that each VM can reach. I have established a stand alone CIFS server, with the shares configured. They are accessible from the VMs.

I have mapped the share to a drive letter on the VM client, and it works properly from the logged in account. I have full control over files on the file system (create, modify, delete).

The VM has Apache 2.4.9 installed.

Things I've tried with no success:

-created a symlink to the CIFS mounted drive into the webroot directory
-added an alias to the CIFS mounted drive
-added the aliased directory using the <Directory> directive
-added the alias and directory directives using UNC references

I am seeing errors like "path is invalid" mostly, but when I try to add the mapped drive (f or the UNC referenced directory, the Apache service won't start.

I added a separate user for the Apache service, and added it to the group that has privileges to talk to the share, still didn't work.

Apache :: Virtual Hosts With Windows 8 Hosts File

Aug 11, 2013

I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment.It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.

If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found.If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..

Apache :: HTAccess File Included In Project - Stuck With 403 Error

Oct 8, 2012

I was trying to set up archive-my-tweets [URL] .... and I seem to have gotten stuck with a 403 error. When I remove the .htaccess file the 403 goes away but so do the rewrite rules so that's a problem.

You'll see the contained .htaccess file that's included in the project.

Basically for now I'm just trying to run this on my mac. I have set up the files in a subdirectory of my personal web server. The personal web server is working fine--but when I go to the /tweets directory I get the 403.

DoS + This Perl Script I Wrote...

Apr 10, 2007

I'm nearly at my wits end with this.

My server keeps going down lately, and I suspect some kind of DoS. Whenever it does, sometimes I can even watch it happen. Such as:

Quote:

80 requests currently being processed, 0 idle workers

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWKWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWKWWWWWWWWWWWWWWCWWWWWWCWWW
WWWWWWCWKWWWWWWW

I watched it fill up like that, from my NORMAL status:

Quote:

13.8 requests/sec - 33.6 kB/second - 2484 B/request
22 requests currently being processed, 36 idle workers

___K__C____CC__C_C_____.C_C____C_CC_K___K_K_KKK__KCKK__W___.....
................

That's what it usually looks like. Anyway, more and more Ws were added in a matter of seconds as I watched it. Next thing, my site doesn't load, and it goes dead. My TimeOut in apache was set to 5 seconds. Now it's at 2, though. I do have keep alive on, but it is VERY low, like its set to 2 seconds and the max keep alives is set to 15 or so.

I have been working on even just catching who is doing this for about 2 weeks now, trying everything to my ability. Here is everything from start to finish:

1. First I tried mod_evasive - this program seems worthless, it doesn't ever detect anything. I can post settings if need be, but ive played with it and it just doesn't work well I find. I have more trouble with it getting false positives. Also, I tried going over the apache logs. For me, this has been a nightmare because its just so hard to see between attackers and non attackers... and i've come up with nothing.

2. I tried APF with AntiDOS but it didn't seem to do anything...

3. I read about DDoS deflate by medialayer, and installed it and gave it a shot. It didn't do anything for me. I tried poking around with the command they have on their website and I found the results quite weird, it didnt show me all of the IPs like it was supposed to, but rather some mess like:

Code:
1 (ip here)
3 (ip here)
9
(1 addres
ses)
So I did more searches online, and eventually came across this command:

Code:
netstat -ntu | grep ':' | awk '{print $5}' | awk '{sub("::ffff:","");print}' | cut -f1 -d ':' | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr
This seemed nice, looked like it was working as it should this time. I used the test.pl ( my only test for this, I have trouble finding other tools )that comes with mod_evasive and sure enough it showed connections by me in there about like 150 or so after. I thought, 'hey thats pretty good, now ill try to make a script to parse it.' I did this, and then croned the script to run every minute.

Then I asked a friend of mine who I know has a better "DoS"er (though won't give it to anyone, understandably) to test the defence. It didn't hold up well at all. He suggested making the script run in an infinite loop instead of a cron, and make it sleep in the loop forever.

I did just that, and it now runs every 5 seconds. Here is the script, it's not the best, but it's all I've got now:

Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl

# Dos

use IO::Socket;
my $command;

for (my $i=0; 1; $i++) {
$command = `netstat -ntu | grep ':' | awk '{print $5}' | awk '{sub("::ffff:","");print}' | cut -f1 -d ':' | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr`;

@lines = split /
/, $command;
foreach my $line (@lines)
{
@twospleet = split(" ", $line);
if($twospleet[0] > 150) {
if($twospleet[1] != "") {
$carp=$twospleet[1];
$carp2=$twospleet[0];
$block = "/usr/local/sbin/apf -d $carp $carp2";
system($block);
}
}
}
sleep(5);
}

This actually worked; he started his attack, it found his IP, and he was blocked, and I didn't go down. The netstat command showed him in with some 200 something connections before he was blocked.

I was not able to see if this was effective against this issue until today, haven't been hit for 4 days now or so (perhaps some sort of easter vacation?). Today though, I watched the same thing happen again, filled to the brim with Ws.

The netstat command I found doesn't seem to be helping me here. If I am correct:

W means Sending Reply, according to the server status page. So what's going on here, someones making lots of connections and my system can't send a reply back for some reason?

My main questions are,

1. Am I right, that this is some kind of DoS?

2. If yes, how is this being done? And are there any test scripts available that I can download and try on myself to watch the statistics & test some more?

3. And again, how can I go about detecting whatever this is? Maybe some better netstat command, or something I can look for on the command page?

4. Is there any way to improve my perl script to protect against this?

5. If it isn't a DoS attack, what else might it be?

I want to take each of my httpd.conf domain configurations and store them in seperate files on the drive.

Can someone give me real world examples from their config of what is needed in httpd.conf and then what is needed in each seperate host file.

Apache Virtual Configuration

Sep 12, 2006

Someone had mentioned a way to use virtual apache configs, this way you wouldn't have to reboot apache each time you add a new domain to your box.
Can you tell me what dso I need to use?

Also is there a conversion tool to grab the configs you have now, and migrate them to the external files?

Apache 2.0 Virtual Hosts

Oct 13, 2007

I just have a question about an Apache 2.0 error. I am running a web host and I am using VHCS for my web hosting control panel which creates virtual hosts in Apache's config files. Whenever I have a certain number of virtual hosts (200 or more roughly) Apache will start giving me problems with no messages about what went wrong. Some examples of what Apache does is that it will crash when I run "apache2ctl restart" or it just won't run when I start it sometimes. It really annoys me since I'm wondering if it's an Apache memory issue. Any ideas on what to do or how to solve this dilemma?

Apache Virtual Host

Jul 25, 2008

For some reason, the first virtual host i have listed in apache2.conf gets all the traffic of all the other virtual hosts listed below it.

Example: Domain xyz.com is listed as the first virtual host. the second, third, and fourth are 123.com, 987.com, and mno.com, respectively (fictitious domains). However, it seems that everything below xyz.com goes straight to xyz.com.

If i switch the first entry, xyz.com with any of the others, such as mno.com, so that mno.com is the first virtual host entry, everything then forwards to that domain.

Apache :: Virtual Hosts Through SSH

Jan 12, 2013

I have a little trouble with my Apache configurations. I have two computers with Ubuntu and Apache 2.2 - let's call them Home (192.168.1.2) and Server (192.168.1.3) connected with a router. I am working on Home, connecting to Server via ssh and mounting the web root directory of Server to Home via sshfs -> Server's /var/www becomes Home's /home/username/www. The problem is I can't really setup my Apache virtual hosts. I have a project in Server's /var/www/project, respectively Home's /home/username/www/project, and I want to create a virtual host on Home that lets me view the remote contents.

This is what I am adding to Home's /etc/hosts: 192.168.1.3 project

This is what I am adding to Home's /etc/apache2/sites-available/project:

<VirtualHost 192.168.1.3:80>
DocumentRoot /home/username/www/project
ServerName project
</VirtualHost>

After all this, when I open http://project/ in Home's browser, I just see the default apache page of Server (the one in /var/www).

Apache :: Two Virtual Hosts With Only One Using SSL

Oct 12, 2013

I am messing with Apache at home and have managed to create virtual hosts with no problems, my next step was to produce a self signed SSL cert. which again has worked but it's redirecting my non-SSL virtual host to the host I have set-up for SSL for example:

- www.mysite1.com set-up with SSL and works as designed both http and https
- www.mysite2.com I don't want using SSL is working fine through http but if you try https it will then redirect to www.mysite1.com

Apache :: How To Set Up Virtual Subdomains

Feb 10, 2014

I'm using the following vhost script: URL...This used to work on an older version of apache in Windows. Now I'm running Apache 2.4.6 on Ubuntu 12.04.

When I type in, for example, dhae.papertower.dev, it processes some scripts internally and moves me to www.dhae.papertower.dev.. and breaks. When I check my log, I find that it's trying to go to the /var/www/papertower/www directory.

I tried adding www.*.papertower.dev to the ServerAlias, but that didn't do it.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Postfix Configuration - Error Regarding Host Name And Virtual Domains

May 21, 2015

I run a virtual server (Ubuntu 12.04, Plesk 12, Postfix 2.9.6) using plesk to manage multiple domains. The server address is server.domain1.com. I use plesk to also manage domain1.com regarding all services, including DNS and mail.

What I just found is that postfix sometimes issues the following warning:

server postfix/trivial-rewrite[7397]: warning: do not list domain server.domain1.com in BOTH mydestination and virtual_alias_domains

The essential part of my main.cf is:
myhostname = server.domain1.com
mydestination = localhost.$mydomain, localhost.localdomain, localhost
virtual_mailbox_domains = $virtual_mailbox_maps, hash:/var/spool/postfix/plesk/virtual_domains
virtual_alias_maps = $virtual_maps, hash:/var/spool/postfix/plesk/virtual
virtual_mailbox_maps = , hash:/var/spool/postfix/plesk/vmailbox
virtual_transport = plesk_virtual

And /var/spool/postfix/plesk/virtual_domains contains amongst others:

domain1.com domain1.com/

I do not have any issues with receiving or sending e-mails right now, but would like to get rid of the error message however.

Could it be the problem that postfix automatically sets mydomain to $myhostname with skipping the first part (i.e., mydomain is implicitly set to domain1.com)? Should I manually set mydomain to server.domain1.com instead? Any other recommendations? Since mydomain seems to be used in multiple options [URL] ..., I wonder what I might destroy with changing this? As all mail services run without any further troubles at the moment, I don't want to break this...

As I assume that quite some people use a plesk-based server to manage the domain to which the server itself belongs to, I would assume that there should be a general fix/check to updated mydomain accordingly?

Apache - Run Virtual Host As User

Jun 5, 2009

I've run into a wall trying to run apache with multiple websites allowing users to use FTPd to manage files.

I'm running FreeBSD 7.1 on Apache 2.2.x

The issue is that Apache runs as www:www but FTPd writes the files as username:client. When performing some scripts that edit back-end files, this obviously can cause errors.

The data for each directory is stored in /home/username/www

I looked into some apache directives I could use. I tried putting User and Group directives into the vhost configuration for each vhost, but that did not work. I even found the perchild module and it looked like it can do the job but was a bit scared and turned off by the fact that it states it is beta at the top of the page. (I cannot link to it because I do not have enough posts.)

Apache Virtual Host, Can't Use Allowoverride

Jun 8, 2008

I have a virtual host and I want to allow .htaccess files to be used, but that requires to put allow override yes in the virtual host declairation as its off by default, but I get this error:

Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 16 of /etc/httpd/conf/virtualhosts.conf:
AllowOverride not allowed here

This completly ditches my whole virtual hosting idea that I've been planing for a while.

Any other way to allow .htaccess through virtual hosts?

using apache 2.2.3

Apache ReverseProxy On Virtual Host

Nov 20, 2007

Today I configured a Virtual Host (VH) for one of my customers. VH run on WindowsServer 2003 Apache 2.0.59. I enabled mod_proxy and mod_proxy_http modules and successfully loaded. Here is the VH config:

Code:

<VirtualHost xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80>
ServerAdmin admin@example.com
ServerName www.example.com
DocumentRoot C:/Apache2/htdocs/www/example.com
DirectoryIndex index.php
<Proxy *>
Order Deny,Allow
Allow from all
</Proxy>
ProxyRequests Off
ProxyPass /cms-test [url]
ProxyPassReverse /cms-test [url]
ProxyPass /cms-eshop [url]
ProxyPassReverse /cms-eshop [url]
ErrorLog logs/www.example.com-error.log
CustomLog logs/www.example.com-access.log combined
</VirtualHost>
According stated above proxy should map the content of yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:80 and send it to client... Apache doesn't do that but redirects client directly to yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy instead, even rewriting URL, what is not proper purpose of proxy. I would expect proxy to retrieve content from yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:80 and forward it to client without URL rewriting. Rewriting URL and direct aiming of client to source of content is unsuccessfull of course, because the source (yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:80) trust only to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx which has a right to request a content.

Could anybody explain why proxy doesn't proxy and redirects instead?

Win 2003 Apache 2.2 Virtual Ssl Hosts

Mar 30, 2007

I have been tearing my hair out over this, I have a small problem, I am trying to set up multiple virtual hosts using ssl on port 443. I have followed instructions and set up IP based hosts with my single network card having two different IP's. but the problem is that the second IP is not recieving any requests from the router as it is using the certificate from the first host and diverting to the result of the first sites authentication process.

any one know how I can do this, the first router forwards all requests to the second more secure router which then forwards to the server which is working fine. I need to get this to work and don't know how. both routers support NAT and ther servers first IP address has been assigned a NAT IP.

I can't include the conf file as the board won't let me until I have posted 5 times....but if you need it I can email it or something

the virtual hosts on port 80 are name based....does this matter?

Apache :: Setup A Virtual Host

Aug 7, 2014

I have a fresh Ubuntu 14.04 install (desktop). I installed Apache, php and mysql from APT and updated everything.I tried to setup a virtual host using these directions: URL...I followed them to the letter:

o I created a folder /var/www/mydomain.local/public_html
o I copied the 000-default.conf in sites available and modified it
o I added mydomain.local to my hosts file (with IP of 127.0.0.1
o I used a2ensite to enable the host
o I used service apache2 reload

When I went to mydomain.local in firefox, it took me to the default host main page.I tried a restart of the service and even a reboot of the computer. No change.On a theory, I used a2dissite to remote 000-default from the enabled site list and reloaded the service. I got the home page for mydomain.local after that.

I created a named host called localhost and reloaded the apache. When I went to http://localhost it took me to the mydomain.local homepage. Rebooted the computer. Now, localhost gives me the apache default home page and mydomain.local does not work at all (I get a server not found).

I get the feeling that there is an apache configuration item I am missing but I cannot find it.

Apache 2.2 Windows Virtual Hosts

Jun 24, 2013

Ok so I just installed apache 2.2 on windows server 2008.

I would like to set it up so if I go to 99.144.79.25(Server IP) I get index1.html. If I go to example.com which points to 99.144.79.25 I get index2.html. If I go to example3.com which points to 99.144.79.25 I get index3.html.

So kind of like, if the domain folder is not found on my server, give the page index1.html.

In the long run I want to run a bunch of sites with different domains, testing right now though.
