Enterprise Hosting -- Video Hosting

Jun 27, 2008

I'm not sure if we're leaning on dedicated or VPS yet, but as a starter post, what's a webhoster you guys would recommend for a hosting company that is reliable and robust that we can scale with....as our requirements grow.

We're currently scripting how the new site will be redesigned, but there will be video blog portion that we expect to cheap up bw.

DirectAdmin / Plesk Hosting - Enterprise Grade Spam Filtering A Plus

Aug 16, 2008

We have a variety of clients that we just put on various providers/platforms that we use for various reason. I've given up on HSphere though. I can see the versatility in this but I just don't have the time to invest learning the interface. What is a +++ though is HSphere platforms bundle in urchin--so for certain sites, we can turn urchin up on the fly.

Is there any hosts you guys recommend that have Enterprise grade email filtering. Part of the problem we have seen is just the level of spam filtering. Even with Pair, stuff was just coming through. For those with email in house -- great , as we just run the MX through Postini 1st and lock down SMTP on the FW side.

For some of our clients *with some minor hiccups* at times, we moved them to Google Apps. The spam filtering is just a +++ as much as I would like to get away from Google on the email. And yes, I am aware they own Postini now...

Back on to Webhosting.

I think we have found a couple of new guys to try
For nix based hosting, I'm planning to move some sites to Medialayer. Support or just various emails between them is very good !

For windows, we are debating. I have to reach out to Karl over at Steadfast and or Wiretree to inquire...but I'm leaning on a Plesk Windows Shared or VPS.

Usability is key on the CP and Cpanel/Plesk is just so much easier than Hsphere.

For the *email aspects* that's tied into any hosting provider, Mosso was interesting - BUT just looking at status.mosso.com was frighting.

Hosting Options For Video

Sep 30, 2008

Just curious if any of you know of good ways to handle the bandwidth costs associated with hosting high traffic video sites.

For a future project I plan a dedicated server, but was hoping there might be a cheap way to avoid bandwidth costs - such as Amazon S3 (however from my calculations this is an expensive option).

Where Do I Go For Video Streaming Hosting

Aug 5, 2008

I produce video. My clients want to put education archival video content (Windows media) for students on the web. At most 10 students a day will log on for a few hours.

I also have clients that want live windows media video streaming. Up to 50 users logging in at most for a 3 hour lecture, only a couple times a year at this point.

I'd like to use one company for the archival(on demand) and live web casting/streaming. Any ideas? Or should I just use 2 different hosting companies? Please tell me companies that you like and have used!

Video/Movie Hosting

Aug 14, 2008

i would like to start a video/movie streaming website on one of our U.S based servers. But i wanted to do some checking first.

These are the questions i have:

1. If i download torrent movies to my local PC am i allowed to upload them to our server? or if i have purchased the movie at home on dvd am i allowed to upload that onto the site? or is all that illegal?

2. Would this type of thing be useful?

I got the idea from those TV show websites around but when you try to watch the actual show there is all Japanese subtitles and they are full of adds and pop up's

Streaming Video Hosting -- Non-Profit

Apr 29, 2009

I work for an NFP and have multiple video files I'd like to setup on my current webserver. As you can guess, i don't have the sufficient bandwidth to support the traffic.

What's the best/most cost-efficient option? What would be ideal is to embed a player into our webpages (similar to what youtube provides) and the streaming is done in the background by the hosting provider. Obviously, there are legal issues around putting this content on any of the free or public video-sharing sites.

Is this something VPS can do or are there separate options?

We're not looking for domain names, IP's or much sophistication other than just hosting the video files and providing us with instructions/code on how to embed inside our existing website.

Video Streaming And Hosting Site

Mar 22, 2008

I'm the owner of pwn-tube.com and am looking for a dedicated server. It needs to have at least a 250gb hard drive, preferably two in raid. The processor needs to be good enough to convert the files while still keeping a site up and going. For RAM I'm guessing 2-4GB. But most importantly it needs to have unmetered bandwidth, and a 100mbps port, with room to upgrade.

I am expecting to host a sequel to a video exclusively, and the first video had 100,000 views. I'm also going to partner up with a game publisher with 16 million gamers.

Hosting Review Site Or Top 3 Hosting Co. For Shared Hosting

Apr 23, 2009

I'm trying to find at least three web hosting companies to choose from to host a Joomla websites on a shared server. Would consider dedicated if the deal was right. I have a friend of mine who wants to create a church website, and is looking for the best deal. I use Netfirms which I have never had an issue with, but I didn't want to be bias, and would like give him other options to choose from.

Is there a good WebHosting Review site, I could check out, or maybe someone could recommend their top three. I reading threw the forums here and I noticed there are not that many complaints with Hostgator. Again, I just want to see if there was anything out there better.

Your Opinion As A Customer: A Hosting Provider Who Couldn't Provide E-mail Hosting

Jun 4, 2009

Lets say you're a customer looking for web hosting, but do have technical experience - you know, you develop your own websites, you've had experience in this sort of thing before.

What if you came across a provider who seemed to offer a good service, they're high quality, they can host your website on their brilliant setup etc... but they do not provide any e-mail accounts with your hosting?

We're developing our own shared hosting setup, our own control panel too. Regardless of the control panel though, we wouldn't feel comfortable hosting peoples e-mail. We have plenty of experience in every other aspect of general shared hosting - but not looking after e-mail accounts nor the associated software.

To be honest I don't think that many shared hosting providers truely handle e-mail properly, and that job should really be left to the professionals.

We could of course guide customers or potential customers on why we won't offer e-mail accounts (i.e. not wanting to offer something we know we can't provide to a high enough standard) and instruct them on how to setup e-mail with another provider (such as Google, who will do this for free with limitations).

The alternative to the above is that we mask in a third party to look after e-mail, i.e. resell someone elses e-mail services as part of our hosting packages. The third party would require API access to setup/remove accounts..

What do you think? Are we just acting stupid trying to provide web hosting without e-mail hosting included? I noticed a while back Dreamhost encouraged their customers to use an alternative e-mail provider!

Hosting Multiple Sites On The Same Hosting Account. Getting A Weird Redirect

Oct 26, 2009

I have about 5 sites all hosted on my same hosting account. One of those domains is attached to the hosting account. I place my other domains in a folder of a sub-directory of my main domain. This has been working fine, up until today when i noticed a weird error. I give you a little example of how my sites are setup

my main domain:
www.maindomain.com

My other sites hosted in a sub-directory of my main domain:
www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/
www.maindomain.com/sites/site3/

How my other sites appear on the web:
www.site2.com
www.site3.com

This works fine for every page until i go to www.site2.com/index.php
It redirects to www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/index.php for some reason
