I've planed to go on easyCGI, I need your valuable suggestion should host on windows 2003 or windows 2008, which one more secure and helpfull they are offering same price for both servers. Looking forward for your kind response.
Does anyone know how to sign up for the RedHat hosting program where you have to pay monthly for the licenses as opposed to yearly?
I called their support number but that guy asked me to sign up online for the Yearly license. But I know a lot of dedicated server companies have a monthly commitment.
Can anyone recommend their sales rep to me who knows exactly what I'm talking about? You can PM me their details if you want.
How do I run a virtual instance of Windows server 2008 on my Linux dedi? Do I need to partition the server and create a VPS for this or can I run it on something like VMware? (Please look at my other thread here [url]t=857377 to learn more about my server, its resources and current config.)
Why would I want to do this? Because my primary desktop OS is still Vista Ultimate 64 and I've invested a lot in Windows-based software and hardware--too much to make a total switch to Linux. But, I don't want to invest more than I have to in order to run a Windows server that allows my business partner to access documents remotely or for us to share various files securely and privately and still serve my mostly Windows-based clients and colleagues. I'm one of, well, two people I know who even use Linux (at least at the OS level and know it).
Since my research shows I **can** do this on Centos 5, the responses that would be most useful to me would be those that focus on how I can do this successfully (even if it seems complicate; I can figure it out with help and/or direction) and what to consider or avoid when creating this virtual guest OS on my Linux dedi.
I will be starting a website featuring my own videos. They will be all flash based. Now I will be having 1 main website, which will be very fast and with its own forums as well. I'll probably go with reliablesite.
Anyhow, what I want to do. Is host flv files on hosts such as dreamhosts, host monster, site5, webhostasp, eleven2, hostgator. As they have > 5TB hosting (yes I know they oversell, but even if I get 75% - its good).
So, if I have lost you, let me explain in more detail.
The page in the reliable host will have links (to 5 files, which the locations are randomised in order with each refresh)..
I produce video. My clients want to put education archival video content (Windows media) for students on the web. At most 10 students a day will log on for a few hours.
I also have clients that want live windows media video streaming. Up to 50 users logging in at most for a 3 hour lecture, only a couple times a year at this point.
I'd like to use one company for the archival(on demand) and live web casting/streaming. Any ideas? Or should I just use 2 different hosting companies? Please tell me companies that you like and have used!
Hi Im new to this and about to launch a site where visitors to the site can upload videos and then they can be checked by me and then submitted to the site. Im looking for a hosting account which wont be madly expensive.
Ive heard about unmetred etc, but ive also heard about being charged large bills for excessive bandwidth etc..
Can anyone recommend a good solution to me that wont literally cost the earth?
I have a client who wants to build a subscription online training site. This site will be hosting proprietary videos that need to be streamed (vs. downloaded).
Can anyone recommend a reliable hosting provider that:
- Supports ecommerce - Supports streamed Flash video - Provides a way to control user's access to videos (only access what they've purchased)
I work for an NFP and have multiple video files I'd like to setup on my current webserver. As you can guess, i don't have the sufficient bandwidth to support the traffic.
What's the best/most cost-efficient option? What would be ideal is to embed a player into our webpages (similar to what youtube provides) and the streaming is done in the background by the hosting provider. Obviously, there are legal issues around putting this content on any of the free or public video-sharing sites.
Is this something VPS can do or are there separate options?
We're not looking for domain names, IP's or much sophistication other than just hosting the video files and providing us with instructions/code on how to embed inside our existing website.
I'm the owner of pwn-tube.com and am looking for a dedicated server. It needs to have at least a 250gb hard drive, preferably two in raid. The processor needs to be good enough to convert the files while still keeping a site up and going. For RAM I'm guessing 2-4GB. But most importantly it needs to have unmetered bandwidth, and a 100mbps port, with room to upgrade.
I am expecting to host a sequel to a video exclusively, and the first video had 100,000 views. I'm also going to partner up with a game publisher with 16 million gamers.
a speaker at a meet-up stated that the only reason Linux is a more popular server platform is that kids starting hosting companies do not need to pay for the license...
whereas college educated techies prefer the windows platform for their servers..
So I thought I would get some opinions from the pro's... which is the overall best server platform
I'm currently hosting some websites using XAMPP/Apache/MySQL (obviously with heavily edited configs) on Windows. The largest site has around 40,000 forum members and grows extensively every day.
Would I see better benefits buying a Linux/*nix server for web hosting needs? What flavour of Linux/*nix would be best suited out of the following options:
CentOS 4 (32 bit) CentOS 4 (64 bit) CentOS 5 (32 bit) CentOS 5 (64 bit) Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (32 bit) Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (64 bit) Fedora Core 6 (32 bit) Fedora Release 7 (32bit) FreeBSD 6.2 (32 bit) Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake (32 bit) Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (32 bit) Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (64 bit) Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (32 bit) Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (64 bit)
Also, would using a control panel such as cPanel (I'd say Plesk, but very bad experience with it on Windows) be beneficial?
The above would be going on a single process Quad Core with 4GB RAM.
I wanna know if upload media to server for streaming will slow your site down?
Reason is that I have a few audio books on my server for my members to listen to, and I have a feeling that my site is using more and more resources and its getting slower and slower each day.
With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box?
Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?
This one may be a bit of a stretch, but does anyone know of a shared host who gives you both Windows and Linux hosting with one account? It is possible, as the company myhosting.com seems to offer it, and I think (mt) MediaTemple has some betas with it.
Update: Apparently MyHosting.com does it by giving you a primarily windows account with a linux sub-domain. That would work for me, but I'd rather a more known provider.

I have really seen is linux hosting advertised - what is the real difference between linux and windows? They both use Apache and PHP - doesn't windows use more resources with it's GUI?
I've started to use Plesk 8.4 on Windows Server 2008 at work, and totally love it. The IIS7-native MS rewrite engine works pretty good. It's a dedicated box.
For my own hosting, I use either shared/reseller or VPS. Looking around, it seems every VPS is still on Windows Server 2003 and IIS6.
I took a look at the Parallels site, but came up empty. Is Server 2008 not supported by Virtuozzo yet? Is that what everybody's waiting for? If that's the case, any news/rumors on when it may be supported? IIS7 is a huge leap over IIS6, in terms of PHP and the Rewrite (plus a few other things, though not as important to me).
Windows 2008 has much more functions than the typical Windows 2003, wonder anyone has any guide on how to best secure this server? Any resources available on the Internet?
Also any additional anti virus and firewall recommended for this?
With Windows client OS (e.g. Vista), it's always good practice to hold upgrading till the first service pack comes out. How true is this for Windows Server software? We're going to upgrade some Windows servers and would like to know if we should stick to Win Server 2003 or go ahead and get 2008?
On February 27, 2008, Microsoft will jointly release Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008, kicking off what it calls a "launch wave" with hundreds of events worldwide. Microsoft will pitch the products as a platform for next-generation Web service applications.
Windows Server 2008 is still expected to be released to manufacturing before the end of the year, with November as the rumored timeframe. Microsoft took a similar tack with Windows Vista, making it available to businesses in November before its public launch in late January.

What do you think this means to hosts offering windows servers? Will they start offering Server2008 in november as the rumor goes, or only in February when it'll be officially launched?
What about swsoft and virtuozzo. What timeframe do you think they'll need to adapt server 2008 for their virtualization.
When I try to change hosting type to "Forwarding" it changes ok.
If I change hosting type to "Website hosting", I get message "The hosting type for "website name" was successfully changed.", but hosting plan still stay "No web hosting"....
