Dotster Incredibly Unreliable

Jun 6, 2008

recently had my site designed and hosted by dotster and some parts are not working the way we expected. I have attempted to contact them over 10 times
I have waited on hold over an hour
there " live 24 hour support" you wait for 15 minutes than apparently a girl named sharon helps you and you get no response.

I have gotten absolutely ZERO response from them.

Just to let everyone know I would NEVER host a site with this company.
at the very least get back to your customers when they have an issue

Anyone have any experience with any of the Dotster VPS'es? I'm interested because I believe they're based in Vancouver, WA which means this might be another West Coast option.

Dotster Support

Jul 9, 2008

I've been with dotster for several years for my personal website - both as a registrar and host. I upgraded my package about 6 months ago so I could have more domains and added a professional photography website and blog subdomain (using wordpress).

Overall I haven't been too unhappy. I did have a problem a few months ago where my photography site was really slow for everyone visiting. I sent in a support request at the time and never got a response. It seemed to correct itself after a couple of days but never got any kind of an e-mail or call regarding a resolution. No real problems since then.

So fast forward to this week. I was preparing to start re-vamping my blog so I went into the apps section and started a backup of the blog webspace. I've done it several times for all my webspaces. The site will report that it's undergoing maintenance during the backup and I didn't go back to my blog until the next morning - 24 hours later. The site was still down and the backup application said that it was still running. I contacted support and opened a ticket. They said it would be resolved within 24 hours. I was not happy with that but took it well. The ticket was opened 30 hours ago now so my site has been down for about 55 hours which to me seems ridiculous. I followed up with their support desk right at 24 hours asking what the deal was. They said it was escalated and it was being addressed. The guy I talked to said he wouldn't give me a timeframe since the previous timeframe already was passed and didn't want to give me false expectations (it was the same tech who opened the ticket).

Since that call this morning I've sent a couple of e-mails asking for updates and received no response at all.

I'm a very patient guy and have an IT background so I understand technical issues but for my site to be down hard for over 30 hours is so unacceptable, is that normal, am I being unreasonable? I'm starting to think I'm just getting what I pay for. I had been thinking it was a good deal and the service was good but this support is so bad it's got me thinking maybe I need to jump ship and find someone else. My dillema is overall I am happy with them and would be worried I'd be finding other problems if not the same problems with other hosting companies.

SmartWaveTech.Com - Unreliable &

Jun 3, 2008

I have been with SmartWaveTech.com for years now i have spent most of my website creating life with them and never received any problems.

The only problems was I chose them as a hosting company called Hugoton hosting this then changed to SmartWaveTech.com, for a while it was okay then they previous owners decided to sell out there company and was perchance by its current owners. This is were all my problems being after the server becoming slow and versions of software not kept up to date I emailed them, this led to nothing no ever a reply I emailed them a further 3 times about this then a further 7 times asking for a account termination. Not once did if get a reply then on email number 8 I received a reply but still they consist to tell me that the hosting package I have its no longer available.

To sum to the have treated me and many other clients very bad I assume, I feel quite cheated with out warring having my hosting taken from me and told its none existent!

Understanding Dotster VPS

Jun 20, 2007

I recently went from dedicated to Dotster VPS to cut down on price and also because I do not have as many of clients I once had.

I chose their cPanel Premium
[url]

Soon after I realized via the Virtuozzo Panel, that I have limits on everything
.
I was pretty upset that none of these limits were posted anywhere on Dotsters site and its a surprise not welcomed.

I want to post some images so maybe you can tell me if their limits are reasonable or if they are way off.

[url]

I had them actually raise my diskinodes from 400/500k to 600/700k
and also my quotaugidlimit from 100 to 200.

For some reason I have 162 ugid's but i have only restored 23 or so accounts on this server, with no other special things running besides the standards. Shouldn't I be around under 100 ugid's?

So my main problems that I have is the folowing limits:

diskinodes: I have only 35 gigs used of the 50 allocated, their initial quota of 500,000 seemed low. now they bumped be to 700,000 and i'm almost there.

quotaugidlimit: for only having 23 accounts it's crazy to believe that I had to have their initial limit raise to 200. I have noticed a lot more users like #2121, #13232, #124312 and so on compaired to my dedicated server. My dedicated had about 5, this VPS shows about 30 or so.

kmemsize: their limit is 18,022,400 bytes, which I always seem to be reaching.

privvmpages: hard limit is 292,912 and i'm usually exceeding this one.

Here is a screenshot of my QoS:
[url]

Also, I noticed once I reach/exceed limits, the first things to be shutdown is my webmail and cpanel and so on, but the sites stay up Is there a way of setting up which resources are shut down in what order? To have mail up is the biggest request. I rather have ftp and cpanel down first.

I am really not happy with what is going on and gaining some user feedback would be great. I really wish Dotster had a complete breakdown of limits, before I bought.

HostMySite.com Unreliable Web Host

Mar 20, 2009

Unbelievable how bad HostMySite.com has become. At one time they were pretty much at the top but there has been enough mistakes, bad service and lack of support on HostMySite.com's part to warn others. The most recent situation could have come out of a modern day Three Stooges skit. When I asked to have a host set up three were generated instead by billing.

When I contacted support about the web not showing he stated that he could see the files I had upload just fine. I looked in the HostMySite.com control panel and found the duplicate entries for the domain. When I contact support again, another technician said that he could see the HostMySite "under construction" page just fine - two different IPs. After finding the duplicate errors I requested that HostMySite.com remove the other entries so that the domain was using only one IP.

I received an email stating the reason for the conflict was due to duplicate entries and that the support ticket was forwarded to billing to remove the duplicates (no kidding). Long story short was nothing happened so I contacted them again and was informed that the support request was stuck in the billing queue - no one had looked at it. My deadline had already pasted (marketing).

More to that story but I sure would like to hear from others that may have had bad encounters from HostMySite.com.

Being one that has been around the block with internet marketing I can say that the original mistake could have been forgiven. The inability on their part to correct the mistake cause for concern. HostMySite.com's lack of concern for their mistake unforgivable.

Insurance Against Unreliable Hosting

Feb 14, 2007

I am not sure is it is realistic to take out insurance against losses caused by downtime. Or perhaps insurance would merely increase the costs to such an extent that it would be better to spend more on the hosting costs, and the improved service that would buy. Has anyone considered this as an issue, because I have read on other forums that people complain of lost income due to their sites being down for a day or two, and it sounds like they just suffer the losses without any recompense?

FDCServers Review - Network Very Unreliable

Jun 5, 2008

I get like 25 kbps download speeds from my brand new fdcservers server (750+ kbps normally from my other servers) even though I'm the only user downloading from it and my U.S 100 mbit servers get less than 100 kbps too when they try to download from the fdcserver. and quite often there's 100% packet loss for 10 - 30 seconds. Very unreliable network. Also, they first installed the wrong OS in my server. I requested CentOS and they installed FreeBSD. At least they fixed that later on.

They don't have service level agreements and they don't guarantee any amount of bandwidth, they just make empty promises. Now I know why.

Reliablesite Is Fake, Liar And Unreliable

Jun 26, 2008

I am very unhappy with Reliablesite. Their servers are down since 48 hours and I feel down. There is no response from the support team. The same happened to the other server as well some days back and they are continously having having hardware issue.

I am just wondering what happened to the marketing blurb that reads:

"Fully Redundant: More uptime starts with multiple backbones of Tier 1 only providers to fail-over servers which kick in instantly."

Where are these fail-over servers and why did they not "kick in instantly" when everything went FUBAR?
The control panel is now just giving the error:

Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)

All of my domains have been down for over 48 hours with either a server error message appearing or an IIS7 "Sites currently being restored. Please see bear with us." message. Every database I have now returns the error message "login failed" for each user as well.

This is an unacceptable amount of downtime, I will now have to list every domain I own and create new users for every database. I find this quite disturbing that I now have an extra amount of work put on me for something that should have been handled by the "fail-over" servers which don't seem to have kicked in at all.

I think they are faking their advertisement of "fail-over" and they should change their name to "Unreliablesite.net".

I think this company's English skills are a bit off when they brag about their "Fully Redundant fail-over servers". Judging from their performance, I think what they were actually trying to say is that their servers are "fell over" servers. You know, the kind of servers keep falling over...again and again.

Sad part about it is they actually believe they're helping people with their lame attempts to explain what the problems are. They are so wrapped up in "damage control" they think their customers are complete idiots and will believe anything they post.

Posts like "25% of the sites should now be working. MySQL and MS SQL databases will be coming back up soon as well. We estimate that the entire move will be complete at 12PM EST June 25th."

What does 25 persent of the sites mean or tell me about when my sites will be up. Twenty-five percent of what?!! Well that was 36 hours ago when they made that claim and many others and they still both down.

All I know is I keep getting Emails from support reading, "It should be fixed now".

Simply accessing the URL reveals that the problem is indeed not fixed. Just a little bit of checking and investigation can go a long way. RSNET, this is getting ridiculous. Please DO NOT send me anymore "it is fixed" Emails until it the problem is actually fixed. I have been patient as and as understanding as I can possibly be through the latest string of outages but my patience is wearing thin. PLEASE just get the sites running again and soon.

VPS Incredibly Slow, Huge Numbers Of Slow MySQL Queries For Plesk/Watchdog

Nov 11, 2008

I've got 25 domains on a Virtuozzo/Plesk8.6/CentOS5 VPS. Each domain has one up-to-date install of WordPress, most have very little traffic (average 200mb per month), maybe 2 domains get 5-7gb traffic per month.

I monitor port 80 connections and rarely see more than 10 at a time.
That should in my opinion be no problem at all for a VPS with 768mb guaranteed ram and 2.4ghz cpu. I've got 30gb hard drive spare too.

But.... about 8 or 10 times a day it grinds to a complete halt: server load at 500-1000%, sites timing out, plesk takes 3mins to load, often I can't even connect with SSH, and the plesk web server, apache

INSERT INTO module_watchdog_sys_stat (time, type, value, service_id) VALUES(FROM_UNIXTIME(1226404705), 'MAINMEM_USAGE', 17472, 11);

80 seconds sounds like a huge amount of time for a MySQL insert to me! Does anyone know if this is likely to be the cause of my trouble? Some problem with Plesk and the database? Or could it be something else?
