Change IP Addresses Assigned To NameServers
Feb 10, 2008
I need to change the IPs that are assigned to my name servers. In WHM they are set fine, ns1.xxx.com and ns2.xxx.com both have their own ip's.
However the nameservers were first setup with 123-reg as they hold the domain im using.
when i ping each nameserver they both endup pointing to 1 ip address (the ip of ns2.xxx.com) so i need to change this.
how i would go about getting this changed?

I'm just curious, when getting IPs with a VPS or Dedicated server, is there any steps to take to make sure the IPs were used by a previous customer to spam or in other way get them blacklisted by Yahoo, AOL, Gmail, etc.?

I changed the default certificate (I added the certificate and marked as Default in Server->SSL Certificates). Also I assigned the SSL certificate to my domain.
This works fine, but now I'm trying to make the website PCI Compliant and their test shows that if you request the certificate from the ip address (instead of using the domain) it showns the Parallels self signed certificate instead os showing the default certificate i uploaded). I used also ssltools.websecurity.symantec.com tool and it shows the same. How to change the certificate shown for the one I bought?

Recently we add a new server,so we register ns3 and ns4 to 2 new ips,of the new server.
Then,in the old server,we set ns3 and ns4 as A records to the new ips.
Doing a dns reverse to ns3 and ns4 they report the correct ips. BUT When make a dns reverse for the nameservers ips,it makes a loop.....

someone setup there DNS for a .biz domain name, as they unable to change nameservers
I told them to setup an A Record to point to the server IP, that works fine
However I told them to put the same IP for the MX Record and, I checked it at introdns.com and it says:
ERROR: Some of your MX records returned by your nameservers are IP addresses. This is not ok per the RFCs and you should change them.
The problem records are:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
This can cause problems!

I'm stuck. First let me explain how my current sites are setup. I have all of my personal domains through GoDaddy at the moment. I set each domain to point to GoDaddys default hosting nameservers. Then I create DNS A Records for my domain pointing to the IP of my webserver. That works.
I recently purchased a domain name from a backordering service. This domain is with a different registrar. They do not offer any kind of managed DNS and will not create A records for me. My server is not setup as a nameserver so I can't do either. I also can't transfer the domain over to GoDaddy because of ICANNs two month rule.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? Is there a service out there where I can point to their nameservers and they will send traffic to my servers IP?
I'm not as sharp on this topic as I probably should be

Recently my "crappy" hosting company decided it would upgrade the servers so I can't send them requests, use the control panel (as its being upgraded) and I really, really want to transfer my account from them to my new host.
Even though I pressed the button to transfer my account, it still hasn't happened - I've written letters, sent emails, done everything I can think of.
My last resort is through Nominet, and changing the IPS tag of my domain name (which runs out pretty soon) to 123-REG (or another IPS tag renewer).
My question is -- if I use Nominet to change my IPS tag on my behalf - would my hosting company still have the DNS settings? Can I still change them - or would it remain in their hands? - (I'm aware that I'd still be liable for outstanding fees, bills, etc).

I changed my nameservers from my last domain, I deleted all the dns entries etc... and updated my hostname etc... But, when I go to create a new cpanel account, it still shows up with my own nameservers and making it with my old nameservers.
I tried going to /etc/nameserverips and they were the new nameservers. Im not sure how to fix this, any ideas?

I have installed a new SSL cert and tried to assign it to an IP address.
Plesk says "Information: The properties of the IP address .... were changed."
But it seems the SSL cert was not changed.
Running in mysql the following query
select d.name from domains d inner join hosting h on h.dom_id = d.id where h.certificate_id = <id of new cert>;
gives:
Empty set (0.00 sec)
I changed the cert for the IP where all my domains are so it should show the domains using that IP/cert. Running the query using the ID of the old cert lists all the domains on that IP/cert.

I had an SSL cert that is about to expire so I purchased a new one, installed it, uninstalled the soon to expire cert. Went into Tools and Settings > IP Addresses, and assigned the new certificate to the IP.
Although I deleted the old certificate, it still shows in a browser as well as when I test the domain at a SSL server testing website. The new certificate shows also in both browser and test website, but it is a secondary certificate after the soon-to-expire cert.
How do I get rid of the original certificate?

I'm having a problem where there are a few test websites that have been left over from deleted subscriptions, there doesn't seem to be any option under Services > Websites to delete them or reassign them to a subscription, and when I try to add a new subscription and specify one of the websites I can't create the subscription as it says that the website already exists, ideally I would just like to remove these websites

Will the nameservers work if the nameservers are pointed to a parking page?
For example:
I need to change my nameservers to ns1.mywebhost.com and ns2.mywebhost.com
(nameservers are made up)
These nameservers are from my web hosting service provider. When I visit the nameservers, it shows up a parking page from a domain parking service (let's say NameDrive parking page)
Will the nameservers function correctly and will my websites work? I have this question because usually the nameservers that I use, they always point to a CP page or something like that rather than a parking page.

I have a client on a dedicated IP, today we needed to downgrade the web hosting plan. As the web hosting plan puts users on a default shared IP, this plan change also changed the dedicated IP to the shared one causing some propagation issues for a small period of time.
I have contacted WHMCS about this asking if they had a way of changing the clients plan but keeping the IP address intact as this could lead to some very undesirable outcomes. They explained that it is not their fault and to contact Parallels.
I know I can change the plan directly in Plesk however by initiating the plan change via WHMCS, everything is automated.

Has anyone helped clients transition from one domain to another? Maybe dissolving a partnership or renaming their company... so a new domain name has been registered and a new website created.
2 Issues:
#1 Using .htaccess 301 redirect
We used the following command line in their old website's htaccess file
Redirect 301 / [url]
The goal was to get people try to visit any page of their old website (i.e. OldWebsite.com/contact.html) redirected to their new website (i.e. NewWebsite.com/contact.html). Isn't that supposed to change the address bar's URL, too? For some reason, I visit their old site and I seem to be redirected to their new website but the address bar still has their old domain name? Something is going on???
#2 Having their new company name for 2 years now. People can enter her new company name in Google, MSN or Yahoo. Her new company name appears in the search results but has the old domain name associated with it. We are trying to get rid of any reference to that old domain name? What's the easiest way to do this? So what people see in search engines is:
New Company
Short Meta Description
www.OldDomain.com
What steps did I miss in this transition?
What steps do I have to take on their old website/old web server to control it's appearance on search engines and make sure people get to the new website?

Will domains still function if they have differing nameservers at the registry from what they do on the server side? i.e. domain1.com pointing to ns1/2.example.com at the registry but on the server the DNS zone has it as ns1/2.example2.com, baring in mind both sets of nameservers are pointing at the same server.

I have purchased a reseller account from www.reseller.net (not real names) They provide me with ns1.reseller.net and ns2.reseller.net, as well as the two associated ip addresses. They tell me to use these 2 ip addresses to set up my own custom nameservers.
I want my own nameservers - ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. Tech support at www.reseller.net tells me thay cannot help me. They tell me to go to the company where I purchased and manage the domain name www.mydomain.com.
I do, and find the control panel page where I -CREATE NAME SERVER-. This I do, and I use the above mentioned ip addresses. This seems to work. When I go back to this control panel page the next day, the entries I made are still there. Yet, I cannot "ping" my nameservers.
Now what? I have tried "google-ing" and not being a super-tech, I get lost. It appears that I must make some changes in my WHM, (I have a WHM...), but I have no access to any "Server" settings.
I have another reseller account with a totally different company, and when I asked them to set up custom nameservers, they just "did it" for me. Again, the hosting company was not related to the domain registering company.

I am experimenting with setting up my first unmanaged dedicated server.
I have directadmin as a cp.
I have 5 separate IP's available to me.
I went to my domain registrar and set up host as ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com using my first two IP's that are available.
My question now is what is the best way to use my three remaining IP's? Do I set them up as completely different domain nameservers ie. ns1.otherdomain.com etc.? Out of those three, I thought you need two IP's per nameserver domain? Is that wrong thinking?
I don't want any relationship shown in a whois dns info between the ips.
