Large Data Storage And Bandwidth

Jun 5, 2009

Our congregation needs webspace to archive mp3 and mp4 files of the weekly messages. Low mp3 is about 3 MB size. High mp3 is about 20 MB size. mp4 video is about 325 MB size. We would provide links to the files so they could be downloaded - no online streaming is needed. Also no normal website stuff - just file storage space and ability to download by anyone who has the URL links to the files.

1and1.com has 250 GB storage with 2.5 TB/mo bandwidth usage for $10/mo. Their phone rep said this type of use of their web space is OK. I wouldn't even look any further except I've read a lot of bad reviews about them.

Los Angeles Colo With Large Bandwidth

Apr 29, 2008

I am working on finding a colo provider in Los Angeles that can meet these requirements:

* Full Cabinet

* 2x20A 220v Power

* Bandwidth either 1Gbps full burstable or 1Gbps dedicated (with plans to move up to 2-3Gbps within a year)

* Available ASAP

The sites that it will be hosting are sales and informational for a consumer product that sporadically gets news or magazine coverage which massively spikes its traffic. These times are when a good chunk of the revenue comes in but we do not necessarily know when they are coming. Does anyone know if having a full burstable line will cover this sort of eventuality or should we grab the entire dedicated line just to ensure we have it waiting? We would be providing all of our own firewalls and equipment, we just need the bandwidth, preferably without having to deal with a router on our side.

Price isn't the biggest consideration; reliability, stability, security, and performance are.

As an additional question, we are looking at a Catalyst 4507R-E switch for the core of our network, with redundant supervisors (for the purposes of ensuring we have no single points of failure). Any one have experience with this switch that can say whether it's a good choice or not for that?

How Do You Host Large Video Files And Support The Bandwidth

Feb 8, 2007

I've got a client who wants to host audio files... Here are the sizes:

50 x 75MBs
300 x 10MBs
400 x 5MBs

That totals 8750MBs or 8.75GBs... If he gets hundreds of visitors, it could end up being 1000's of GBBs or bandwidth.

I don't know what to look for to support so much bandwidth... Do you buy bandwidth? Are their special companies out their that host it for you?

Reccomendation For 25GB Per Month Of Bandwidth Site

Apr 28, 2008

Right now his website uses around 25GB per month of bandwidth and has only been open about 1-2 months. This is a phpBB 3.0 forum with around 7000 members (most active) and grows every week by another hundred members or so.

Right now I am hosting him on my dreamhost account, but he wants to set himself up on his own host. I agree with him since dreamhost is having a lot of mySQL database connection errors that last a long time a few times a month and he needs to be up and running 24/7 for his visitors.

He would like a host that can easily support this bandwidth (is 100-200 GB per month a good estimate taking into account expansion? also he is going to open up two new sites that would be equally as popular most likely) And he also wants the host to allow for future upgrades to bandwidth and/or storage.

Storage is not a huge issue for him. he isn't hosting any crazy media. Just a 2 cms installs and 2 forum installs. so 20 - 30 GB would probably be good right?

reliability and performance of the host should be a little better than dreamhost's since this shouldn't be an overseller type host right?

Consuming Heavy Bandwidth Upto 2000 US$+ Per Month

Jun 14, 2008

We are facing a very problematic situation since last several months due to accessive bandwith usage. But we are sure this is only local traffic.

We have 2 Servers with our hosting provider
Server A - this is a VPS
all our webfiles/domains/dns/nameservers reside on this server

Server B - this is a dedicated server
contains only databases

(we are actively running vbulletin based forums on this servers)

Since last several months we are facing huge bandwith increase since we have transferred only our databases to Server B. (earlier database + everything was on Server A) We never ever consumed even 50% of the entire allocated bandwith in past when we were on Server A.

But only after moving the database from Server A to Server B we have found this tremendous increase,

Can we do something about same ? as both the servers belong to same hosting provider.
We are not sure but expect that this is only local network traffic between 2 servers.

Wiredtree Month By Month Review

Jan 28, 2009

I've signed up with Wiredtree for a Managed VPS 12 days ago.

I know it's not enough time to write a review. But I decided to write my first impression then keep you updated by writing a new review at the end of each month, so expect one at 12 February.

For now, these guys are simply the best I've tried.

They reply you in 15 minutes or less and if it took them more, 20 minutes or something, then be sure that they're investigating your problem. If you can't wait for 15 minutes, then go ahead and give them a call on their toll-free number and they'll be with you second by second. Their support wont just solve your problem, but they'll educate you telling you what caused the problem and how did they fix it.

I'm solicitous about security. But with these guys, I finally sleep peacefully knowing that my VPS is well secured.

SQL Too Large

Apr 5, 2007

I'm having a lengthy issue where my databases are to large to import in phpmyadmin using plesk. Unfortunately I dont have direct access to phpmyadmin and can only access it by DB user through plesk.

I have tried to edit php.ini in the following locations:

upload_max_filesize = changed this to 64M

post_max_size = changed this to 32M

maximum_execution_time = changed this to 300

maximum_input_time = changed this to 300

Why am I still not able to import my DB's which are about 8MB each?

VPS With Large RAM, Or Dedicated

May 20, 2008

I have a website which has about 20K users, and now I am using VPS plan at LunarPages.

However, I have encountered a trouble of out-of-memory. Although I have configured my Apache and MySQL carefully, the 512M memory is not enough. Therefore, the users' expirence is not good these days because my site is very unstable.

I contacted Lunarpages, asking them whether I can upgrade my VPS to bigger RAM, but they said the ONLY way to get a RAM bigger than 512M is to upgrade to dedicated hosting plan.

The following are some stats of my website:

Total Members: 20k
Online at the same time: max 600, average 300

The Lunarpages VPS plan:
www[dot]lunarpages[dot]com/virtual-private-server/
disk space: 20G
RAM: 512M
price: $42 / mo

Now I am not sure whether to migrate to didicated hosting plan, because currently, the main problem is just the size of RAM. Other resources e.g (CPU, network etc. ) are not my bottleneck. So I think it seems not worthwhile for me to migrate to the dedicated hosting plan with a doubled price (even more, almost 3x if I need 1G RAM), just for a larger size of RAM.

Can you guys give some suggestions to choose a VPS provider for my site?
The factors taken into my consideration include:

* RAM size: at least (1G for peak, 768M garantee). The bigger, the better. Nice if can choose larger size when needed.
* price
* bandwidth: 1T/mon?
* easy to upgrade to dedicated host: just in case that one day I will have to use dedicated.
* whether there are coupons for a lower price.

VPS With A Large Amount Of RAM

May 22, 2007

I've been with zone.net for a couple months now, and I have a guaranteed 512MB of memory, which I seem to constantly be hitting, which seems to result in processes being killed and http access vanishing. Growing quite annoying.

I'm looking into moving onto a new provider that can provide more guaranteed RAM for about the same price.

Space isn't a huge deal, I'd do fine with a meager 5GB. Bandwidth I need at least 200GB, but wouldn't mind more.

I'd like to stay managed if possible, as I'm not as well versed in server workings as I should be. Also am in need of cPanel, which I know is a spendy sucker.

My budget is something around $70 a month, and I don't really want to go much higher than that. Still a poor college boy :/

Can anyone suggest such a provider? I've browsed around a lot of the VPS hosts but can't seem to find one that has as much RAM as I need for a decent price. All the ones that seem to have 512MB+ are pretty expensive, and offer a lot more other stuff (space/bandwidth) than I need.

As a final note, the line speed isn't that big of a deal. I'm currently on a 3mbit and am surviving, but going back to a higher speed line would be great

Backing Up Large DB

Jan 17, 2007

Just had a quick question about backing up a large MySQL DB. I have a database that is 50gb with about half a billion entries in it. One table itself is about 40gb, the other 10gb consists of smaller tables.

The problem is, I want to back the database up and be able to keep it LIVE at the same time (as it will fall behind quickly if it's pulled for more than a few hours, as there are somewhere in the area of a million entries an hour, plus other deletions and queries).

Ban A Large Number Of IPs

May 30, 2007

I'm currently using iptables to ban IP addresses from the servers, like:

Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -j DROP
I ran a "spam trap" for the last few months and now I have over 11000 IP addresses who were trying to spam on my website (guestbooks, phpBB and forms) and I want to ban them all (pretty sure bots run from them).

My question - is iptables the way to do it? I mean does banning such a large number of addresses have any significant performance or other issues I should be aware of (except of the fact I may be banning some legitimate traffic)? Is the -A INPUT the way to ban them all or is there a more appropriate way of baning such a number of addresses?

I'm on CentOS 4.5 i686, Apache/1.3.37, Pentium D 930, 2GB RAM.

Large Apache Domlogs

Jun 18, 2009

to delete and reset the domlogs files from Apache server, as they have become too large, but I want to keep a record of the past few years website stats.

I could download the domlogs files (they look like MS-DOS applications) but once I have I am not sure how to read them, is there some off server application that could open these files? I currently view stats in awstats from cPanel, but the size of the files is causing problems with updating now.

The only thing I can think of doing is taking screenshots of the relevant stats that I want to keep, before deleting the files, but was thinking there must be a better solution than that.
