What Dedicated Server Features Makes You Go WOW!

Hey, I'd be interested to hear a bit about the dedicated server features that would "turn you on" as potiential dedicated server client. What would make you go "WOW, thats cool", which features that would be indifferent to you and which ones you'd rather be with out...and why?

We have a customer with problens in his imap service, the connection to the server goes down all the time.
so the questions are:
- there is a time limit to stay connected? we can open a imap section and keep it open all the day?
- is possible to use the same login (use@domain.com) in 3 or more places at the same time?
- is possible that the imap server is with more connections than it can handle?

wondering in general and specifically for woodcrest vs conroe and kentsfield vs clovertown
I can't find either
a) an explanation as to why the server cpu's are superior to the desktop equivilents
or
b) benchmarks comparing them.
even mainstream hardware sites like tomshardware has benchmarks for server hdd's, but not server cpu's for some reason.
apart from the ability to use dual cpu's in a single machine, what is the advantage? what warrants the price difference? are there benchmarks available anywhere to compare comparable models? (example, woodcrest xeon 5150 2.66ghz vs conroe c2d e6700 2.66ghz)

Please pardon the "newbie" nature of this post. (Due to circumstances outside my control, I've had management of a Windows Server 2003 VPS thrust upon me, and I'm feeling like a fish out of water!)
I have finally abandoned any hope of getting phpmailer to work with Joomla 1.0.13, so I've decided to configure the POP3/SMTP features of my server so that I can use Joomla's SMTP mail service. (Joomla's SMTP option is limited to port 25 and cannot use ssl.) Anyway, I've tried to set up my POP3 and SMTP services, but I must be doing something wrong. I have both services set up with my registered domain name -- and a check of the DNS in the SMTP setup comes back OK. However, if I try to use my domain name as my SMTP and POP servers in Outlook Express, the program times out while "looking for host." If I enter "localhost" or my IP address (numeric) as my mail servers, I get a dialog box asking me to log in. However, when I try to log in -- using my administrator name & password -- it doesn't work.
I should probably stress that I'm using SERVER 2003, not an EXCHANGE server for this. I have need for one, whole mailbox to make my stupid contact form work, which is why I'm doing this in the first place. If this doesn't work, I'm going to create my own contact form in html, throw it into a joomla content page, and use the phpmailer script to send it manually. Not ideal, as it will always go to the same mailbox, but I'm getting to the point where I DON'T CARE ANYMORE!

Apart from being free, of course. I can see thousands of free webhosts, many of which even don't put ads, and still support Databases, custom domains, even unbelievable bandwidths. Still, how does premium webhosts remain at the top? Or what is the problem with these free hosts?

I'd like to get some feedback on what makes people sign up with a provider. On the flip side, what turns you away from a provider? Their site, feedback etc?
Personally, I like to see a provider that has reliability, stability and excellent customer care.

I got a cPanel notification that one of my client's had exceeded their bandwidth and so the site was down.
Checking, I found in AWStats that nearly 400+ MB was web traffic. It looks normal to me. However, AWStats simply grouped them all together under 'Others' without providing clear details.
Is there any other way I can find out what made up that 400+MB traffic?

I'm very familiar with shared hosting but VPSs are a whole new ballgame. What are the top things to consider when looking for a VPS plan, just in a general sense? I figured the biggest are:
CPU
RAM
Hard Drive
OS
Control Panel
IPs included
reboots
I know with shared hosting you need pay attention to what is installed, programming, databases, etc. but how essential is that on a VPS? I know this is basic stuff. I'm very new to it, but hope to get a handle on it. Sooner or later, (probably sooner than later) I will want/need to upgrade from shared to VPS. Any other features I should keep in mind while searching?

The market is full of VPS providers with different combinations of features.. some offer huge amounts of ram, bandwidth, managed, unmanaged, etc.. The sheer number of choices is dizzying..

I run a wordpress blog with apache2+mysql5+php5 in a Debian vps with 1024mb ram (plus swap).
When you read the website everything works quick and smooth, but when you have to add data to the database (edit posts, write posts, write comments) something weird happens.
monitoring the system with the top and I see that, for example, as soon as an article has been posted (already got the "article posted" message in the page) the free ram goes suddenly down (some seconds) from 800mb to 0. Swapping starts and the website stops responding. in the meanwhile cpu "wa" goes high (90%++).
Typing ps aux I can see that is not mysql process's fault, actually it seems more that it's apache to cause this ram hogging, in fact an apache restart brings back tons of free ram.

This has been a topic that has been slowly developing without too much in the way of discussion. Exchange has been the killer email solution now for years - it's integration with Outlook, its sleek webmail and support for mobile devices and push email is almost unbeatable. THe only problem is your stuck in a windows environment and have killer licensing costs associated with the priveledge of using it.
We run a web hosting service down here in New Zealand where the market isn't quite as cut throat as in places like the US and that is reflected in prices. Hosted exchange accounts sit around $30NZ per month per email inbox, quite high considering our median income is around $30,000NZ.
I think this has priced the service out of the rich of small/medium sized businesses and as a result many people here don't know of or use the features which could radically improve their email experience.

From what I see, it seems that the collaboration and integration exchange has such as in calendar/contacts/tasks is becoming standardized accross mail servers.
Do people think that in the future these features will become a standardized feature of most mail servers?

I am having many accounts with hostgator and have been using them for almost three years now. Their prices are good and service is good also (during the recent 6-8 months).
I am looking for some alternative shared hosting service.
We will need around 15 hosting accounts on different servers, with different dedicated IPs (which should be in different C Class).
For a similar plan (baby) with hostgator, i am spending $9.95 per month. I am looking at reducing the hosting costs.

4-8 domains to be hosted
MYSQL and PHP with some basic modules installed
What i am looking for is a reliable company with many servers, on which they can give me

* Advertisers to be clearly displayed as advertisers/affiliates

I am currently using a shared hosting but due to increasing traffic and server load my existing host is not able to provide reliable services and I am planning to upgrade my hosting service.
While I was searching for Dedicated Servers, I learnt about Virtual Dedicated Servers but I am not very sure about their reliability? Are Virtual Dedicated Servers useful? My website current serves over 2500-3000 visitors a day resulting in 30,000 pageviews and I am expecting the traffic to grow by atleast 2 folds in the next few months as I start some PPC campaigns and Email Marketing for my website. Can a Virtual Dedicated Server cater such needs assuming my website to be more of less dynamic website written in php?

There's something I've always wondered, what makes a Xeon a Xeon?
For instance, what is the difference between a Core 2 Quad Q9300 and a Quad-Core Xeon E5420. Both are quad core, have a 1333MHz FSB, run at 2.5GHz, have SSE4.1, any all the specs seem identical.
Only difference I see is the Xeon has 12MB cache compared to the Q9300's 6MB.
But generally speaking, what makes a Xeon such much better for a server environment than a Core 2 processor.

I have Plesk 11.5 (service provider mode) on a Windows 2008 server IIS7.Most of my sites are developed in .asp and therefore i use a custom 500-100.asp error page that check s the IP of the visitor then displays either a friendly error, or if its my IP a full error of what has happened (it also emails me the error). This allows me to debug pages easily whilst developing and to keep an eye on anyone trying SQL Injection hacks on my sites (as the error and email also have session variables and IP address).I dont have root access to the server as it is a Webfusion dedicated server.I have following the Plesk documentation -
1) Switch on custom errors for the subscription
2) Look in virtual directories and navigate to error documents
3) Find the error in question (500:100) and change it to point at either a file or URL
FILE - I had the data centre add in the 500-100.asp error page in to the virtual template so that my page is available in the list of virtual files - this didn't work but that maybe because its not a static page??
URL - when i add the path it says its incorrect, if i add a fully qualified address, it accepts it but it doesn't work.give me a specific example of the URL that can be entered relative to the root as the format in the documentation isn't accepted. The last step is to restart IIS which is also an issue as i cant seem to do this from the Plesk panel..It is as if it isn't catching the 500:100 error, and only catching the general 500 error??

I am going to be buying a dedicated server from kimsufi Most likely the 2XL Package.
My streamers will be using my server aswell, On weekends we will be running 3-4 streams at a time, weekdays 1-2 at a time.
Spreading all the streams out, at anyone time we will have 300 viewers.
I need to know your advice on this before i go spending money.
How do i convert my dedi into a flash media server, i need red5 or something, thats all i know so far. My streamers wil be streaming to server with FME, And i also want it coded so that my streams can only be embedded on my site.
Basically i dont have a clue where to start, how long would it take me to set up etc....
In addition, what kind of server do i need, windows / linux / traffic / burstable / standard etc..
