Ssl Issues Wild Card, Server Wide, Domain, IP
I have installed ssls before but this is a once a year task and each time it comes up again I have to learn it all over again
When would I use a wild card *.mydomain.com as apposed to just mydomain.com
I hear talk also of a server wide ssl how is this possible do you create the ssl for the IP rather than the domain
What is the best way to do this on a dedicated box with WHM/cpanel to where my users have secure access to their webmail, cpanel client area etc.
I've searched the forums but i dont see much on the different uses of ssls just instructions on installation

One of our customer is looking to use wild card SSL on one of his site hosted with us, he needs clarification on following. Quote: We want to have load balanced site serving contents from three different Apache on different physical machines. Site needs SSL security and we will have wildcard SSL for it. However, since the CSR is generated from one apache, will the SSL certificate give errors or alerts if the request is transferred to other apache?. Server-Wide SSL
I have a server runnning WHM/cPanel and want to purchase an SSL certificate that I would set up on a specific domain. ex: secure.myserver.com, and then allow individuals hosted on my server to use that domain (instead of their own) for SSL purposes, if they didn't want to purchase their own certificate. (ex. They would use: secure.myserver.com/~customer/myfile.php) My question is, what kind of SSL certificate would be appropriate for this. Could I purchase a single-root certificate from RapidSSL and set it up on that domain?

I've been having some DNS problems with one of my domains for quite some time now. The domain does not always resolve - some go days without being able to access the site. I ran a simple BASH script to show what I mean. SSL For Any Domain Hosted On Single Server
is there any sort of ssl certificate that will 'secure' any domain, hosted on a single server? For example, I have the following domains and subdomains: google.com test.google.com mywebsite.com hello.example.com All will be hosted on the same server (same IP) and I want all to be secured, through a SIGNED certificate, not a self signed. I assumed that wildcard ssl would be fine for this, but I just took a look and it's only for subdomains: example.example.com hello.example.com. Is there any way of having every subdomain and domain secured, using ssl, through one certificate? I don't want to have to buy individual certificates for every domain, that'd be... expensive.

1 SSL Cert... 1 Domain... 2 Servers. How To Setup A Backup Server
We have two in-house servers, one is hosting our public web server. The other one was just purchased to host a mirror of the production server (as a backup). The site is protected by an SSL cert... my question is how do i set up the server(s) so if/when the backup server needs to be switched into produciton, the SSL cert will transition flawlessly? DNS Issues - Domain Not Resolving Sometimes
Does anyone have experience with DNS issues? I'm hosting a few sites with LiquidWeb (freeteams.net and laxteams.net are the big ones), who's been a terrific host, but I occasionally have some issues trying to access my sites. It occurs only occasionally (maybe 10-20 people have let me know in the past year), but with users in different locations and on different ISPs. It seems to also only occur for a couple of hours. When they try to type in a specific domain, it won't show up in their browser (browser-independent, I've tried it in Chrome, IE, and Firefox.) However, when they try the IP address directly, the site works. I have about 4 sites on one server, all with their own IP address, and the issue doesn't affect all the domains at the same time. LiquidWeb says it's an ISP issue (they've checked all the settings on the server, and everything looks ok.) I tend to agree with them, because when I or my users switch from using their ISP's DNS server to OpenDNS' server, it works. However, it's happened at a number of different ISPs around the U.S., including universities, which makes me think there's something I can do to solve the problem. Also, I don't want users to have to change their computer settings. Also, while I can't access the domain in the browser, I am able to ping the domain, and it will respond.

Linux Server-wide Anti-spam Solution
for a server-wide anti-spam solution I can implement on a Linux server. The mail queues are constantly getting backlogged with thousands of messages which bring the servers to a crawl. There are really two issues the solution needs to address. 1) Spam 2) Spam sent to other people that have the from address forged with our clients' email addresses. We have spam assassin installed for individuals to use, but there's got to be some sort of solution that can clear out the vast majority of the junk before it even gets to the queue. It probably goes without saying, but the solution needs to be open-source or have a very inexpensive license.

Server Wide Custom Error Pages W/ Whm/cpanel
i have a server with whm/cpanel and would love to have custom error pages that work server wide not just for a specific domain. I have tried adding the "ErrorDocument 404 errors/404.htm" to the httpd.conf file but it doesn't work. I have no trouble getting custom errors to work for a specific domain but can't seem to get it to work server wide. Has anyone else tried to tackle this and actually had success?

I'm setting my first eCommerce site and right now I need to resolve the following issue. I need to install (well, the hosting company will do it for me) a SSL certificate and I need to know what is best or common practice, to use domainname.com or www.domainname.com I don't know what difference it would make but it seems to do so because the hosting company is asking me to choose. i just got this ssl certificate but i have some doubts how exactly should i set up the whole magic. i created the secure.domain.com which suppose to be the sub-domain for the login page which means when user decide to sign up/login to immediately transfer to the ssl state(sample: see ebay.com and then their https login page). so, far the home page which is domain.com(or www.domain.com) it doesn't need to be covered by the ssl. so, i was just wondering how do i play the game? i know it's kinda tricky and the key is somewhere in the sub-domain name(cP set up), .htaccess and/or index.php files but not very clear to me.

What Raid Card For A 1U Server
I was building a 1u server a month or so ago to colocate. After screwing up the purchase of the raid card (got a pci 64 or something) its been sitting next to me not doing much. I need to go ahead and find a good raid card and get this colocated, I have literally spent hours on Newegg, Amazon and Ebay and found nothing that really jumps out at me. When people were helping with the build before, Adaptec was recommended, but the card is now deactivated on newegg so I am looking again.

I would like to create an SSL website for parts of my domain. I have a few VPS's one running cPanel, the others running just Webmin. Now I have managed to install SSL as I can login to WHM/cPanel using the secure port fine. Also I have installed SSL on the Webmin VPS's as I followed www.webmin.com/ssl.html which tells you how. However I would like to get sections of my website secure i.e secure.mydomain.com would be HTTPS, and the rest of the site just normal HTTP.

CAC/Smartcard User Info Not Accepted, Must Use Domain Usr/pwd Instead For SSL Site
Having an issue with random individuals trying to access an intranet site with a security certificate. Most users are able to simply select their Smartcard/CAC certificate, enter the pin number and then are granted access to the site's pages. However, random individuals enter their pin and then are immediately re-prompted by the IE alert dialogue to enter their domain username and password. If they don't enter their network domain username and MS password, then they receive a 401.1 Unauthorized. I am confused as to why these certain users (who are selecting the same certificates as the successful ones) are being prompted for their domain name/pwd. Furthermore, they're able to access other sites which require a CAC to get past the security certificate. Possible that a user token is unable to be established via a CAC for the particular site, but not sure why. Since these users are getting a 401.1, then somehow their identity associated with their CAC credentials is not validating. In IIS: Anonymous users are not allowed (unchecked). 128-bit encryption is required with SSL. Integrated Windows Authentication is checked. Accepting client certificates In the site's web.config file all users are allowed and only anonymous are denied. Developed in asp.net 3.5 We have tried to reproduce the problem in testing and development environments, but have fortunately/unfortunately been unable to duplicate this issue. This furthermore eludes to an issue that might be isolated to the production server, users access to it, and/or the certificate that is applied to that SSL website on that server. The exact same setup is present on the development box without any issues at all, indicating to me that the problem resides on the production server's ability to properly receive/handle CAC information from those individuals or that something funky is going on with the way the security certificate is relating to the client's CAC x.509 certificate. A little more information that may be of use: the browser prompt that initially asks for the CAC has nothing to do with the code of the site, but rather is enabled by applying the security certificate to a site in IIS; thus indicating to me that there is something written into the certificate that looks for client certificates tied to the ActivClient agent via the browser? The violating users' cards work on all other applications and even on SSL sites on other servers that bring up a CAC prompt. I believe we have confirmed that the certificates associated with their cards and their IE browsers are valid through 2015 (or longer in some cases), and are the same in nature (x509 certificate from the card)... and issuer is being consistently selected as DOD Email CA-15 (though the regular DOD CA-15 works as well). Again, maybe something with the fact that it's isolated to one production server, something with the SSL cert. on that url or user access? Then again, I probably have no idea what i'm talking about, just throwing a bone here to see if anyone has had the same issue or has any ideas.

Server Change Issues
I have a reseller package with HostGator.com , and I had one of my personal sites on it. The site was growing too fast, and taking up too much of my reseller package, so i bought another normal hosting package from hostgator. They did a complete site copy onto the new server (same account name for site, just on a different one of their servers) Old: (URL address blocked: See forum rules)~midnight/ New: (URL address blocked: See forum rules)~midnight/ I did this swap over 7 days ago. It was successful, everything worked, did my DNS swap and i thought that was it. Now for the confusing part. when i type in my domain ((URL address blocked: See forum rules)) it shows up perfect, as it should, as it does with 75% of my members BUT For the other 25%, its showing up as the old server. I have been onto my domain supplier, and they said all is fine at their end, they are seeing the site as they should, have been onto hostgator, and it works for them, they cant understand what it can be. Not only this, but people who can get on, might still get the old servers at times. People who cant get on, can get on from different computers in different houses (hope that makes sense) I was about to change the site back to my reseller package and scrap the new hosting, but said i would seek advice from other webmasters first. Has anybody ever experienced this before? How is it solved? What can i do?

1and1 Issues, So Now Looking For A New Dedicated Server
I'm currently running a dedicated managed business server with 1and1 (UK). As most of you know their level of service leaves a lot to be desired, and from personal experience this has been dropping even more in the past year. Emails to their support staff sometimes take days before I get a reply. And I've been experiencing server downtime that has sometimes lasted for hours before the server has finally been rebooted, and that from a managed dedicated server plan! Today for example the server went offline at about 11:00 GMT and didn't go back online until 16:00 GMT, so it was down for 5 hours! Even though I had tried to contact the support staff a number of times during this period. This kind of downtime happens at least once per month and I also get a couple of other shorter periods of downtime most months. I run a site that has been growing in size steadily over the past couple of years, but I don't think it is overloading the server, so I don't think it is anything I've done that keeps crashing and taking the server offline. The site is currently getting about:8,000 unique visitors per day. 600,000 page views per month. 60GB of bandwidth per month (this is increasing by about 5GB per month). 20GB HD space (but content is constantly expanding so will eventually need at least 50GB) But even earlier last year when the site's traffic was still only 20GB a month with 3500 unique visitors per day the server was just as unstable! I've checked the server logs and the server load is averaging at 1.02 with a peak of 2.62, CPU usage is averaging 24% with a peak of 56% and all other system resources are quite low. Are those figures acceptable? I personally thing they look fine and can't see what could be crashing the server. Could my site's database access activity be crashing the server? The site uses between 26-80 sql queries per page due to the site being a database directory of over 5000 page entries, with each containing a mix of ajax and web2 technologies to deliver its content. Is that creating a high load on the DB server? Not sure as the server, as mentioned above, only has an average CPU load of 1.02. Anyway. I'm less than happy with the level of support and service from 1and1 for a managed dedicated server. Even if the server does crash, it should be rebooted quite quickly as it is supposed to be managed. So I'm now actively looking for a new dedicated server. What would you all recommend based on the current load and traffic my site currently requires? Budget wise I current spend about £60 ($120) per month so don't really want to spend any more than that if possible.

Cron Issues On VPS Server
I have a VPS Setup which is running Cpanel, everything works fine apart from some of my clients Cron Jobs. Each user is trying to get cron to run a script to update a page. if they run the script from a browser then it works fine and the page is updated, however if they let cron run the script, it does not run and they get an error email from the server. Website Pop Up Issues On Server
I am having pop-ups issues on my website. Previously I tried to solve it out but wasn't able to because due to 64 bit of Windows 2003 most of the softwares were having compatibility issues. But now when I have switched the server to 32-bit, on the new server, the website is still having the pop-ups. I have tried a couple of softwares to detect them, but in vain. Server Issues / Execution Time
During the last couple of weeks my main server has started acting weird. Sometimes(often) when accessing my site, I get a page saying that server or location could not be found. Reload and "bam" page loads again. Average load on the server is 0.50 When executing scripts (I.E uploading files using web2ftp or cp file manager) server shuts the connection after a few seconds and say page cannot be found. I set the execution time in php to 60sec, so this is not the issue. When I ping the server, I do not get any packet losses.

Anyone Here Having Issues With Ixweghosting Windows Server
I am having tough time with IXwebhosting for last 6 months. They are trying to game a lot. Many times their sql server is creating a problem and a little with web server. They repeatedly deny that claiming that i have issues with my connection string when i also see the issue from SQL Server Management Studio. I am looking for a replacement now. I am not able to afford Verio or Hostway, please suggest me a plan which is good with 200 MB data transfer per month and 100 MB sql server space. That should have a reliable service and good up time. My budget is $10 per month.

Mail-Server Issues With Hotmail
On the main mail server I run from my site I have being receiving a lot of issues when trying to send mail to hotmail. I do not receive any error messages, the mail is just never received it is filtered out(it does not even show up in the spam filter). I am not a spammer and have never been. My IP and domain check out fine when I put them through spam databases. So is there some trick to getting your mail accepted?

Windows Server 2003 IIS Issues
I have a windows server 2003 server with IIS 6 installed on it. My site runs fine, then all of a sudden becomes VERY slow. I asked server hosts to take a look at it, and they noticed an IP that is has attempted to connect on port 80 432 times in a few seconds, causing the site to slow down. Is there any software i can use to try and combat this spam/abuse? I have a trend micro anti-virus and firewall installed on the server. I have blocked that IP, but there is nothing stopping that from changing. Also, are there any free/cheap server monitoring tools for the server that i can monitor the server remotely with? The server has SNMP installed and configured according to my server hosts... watever that is.

Connectivity Issues To VPS Server From Certain Locations
We have a VPS with Media Temple. Their data center is somewhere on the westcoast. From time to time we have severe issues to connect from our Brooklyn/NY locations. We experienced the connectivity issue from 2 physical locations. Doing a tracert gave us a good result. There are usually 4-8 users using our shop admin for order processing or the shopping cart for manual order entry. While they are having problems connecting from there, I can connect just fine from Calgary/AB, Canada. Most of the time no issues at all. how to debug that?

Site Running In Multiple Server Issues
Current Status My main website is a dating/magazine/community site. I use server ONE for as my main server for: nameserver mail apache - php mysql This server uses FreeBSD with CPanel/WHM Server ONE load averages are about 1-1.5 A year ago I got another server (server TWO) to host a php chat script, and unload the main server. This server hasn't a domain attached to it and I'm using it through its IP. This server runs: apache - php mysql And it also uses FreeBSD but with Webmin. The load averages for Server TWO are about 0.20. Recently I transfered all the images of Server ONE to server TWO, with a good result for loads on server ONE. What I want to doSome users of the site complain that they can't see any images of the site due to IP based images src. So I want to set up a redirection so images.example.com to redirect transparently to the other server. When I tried to setup a subdomain redirection through Cpanel, I just got again the IP of the other server. Who can this be done? If I must setup DNS stuff in server TWO, in order to achive it, can I use it also as spare nameservers for the domains hosted on Server ONE? What else is easy to transfer to server TWO in order to unload server ONE?

Chmod All Occurances Of A File System Wide
How do I sweep my entire server and chmod a particular filename located in the cgi-bin to either 0, 755, etc? For example, to disable a particular perl script running on my system on over 100 accounts in the /cgi-bin/file.cgi I want to chmod the file on every account that it comes up on that /cgi-bin/file.cgi needs to be chmod'd to 0. Reverse Domain Name Server (DNS) ARPA For Domain On VPS
I have a vps with dedicated ip's for my domain names. I read that in order for mails coming from my server not be picked up as spam, i need to add reverse ip entries. Now i have already added the glue nameserver records on my godaddy control panel, ns1.mydomain.com -> 10.20.30.40 ns2.mydomain.com -> 10.20.30.41 But do i need to speak to the datacenter to add the reverse dns entries for my domain on their nameservers? What about if i host my nameservers offsite, but then have my webserver/mailserver etc inside the datacenter? Would i need to request the datacenter where the nameservers are hosted to add the reverse ip entries for the domain, and then the request the same from the datacenter for my web/mail servers to add the reverse entries? Is it really required?

Domain Parking - Wildcard Domain Name Server (DNS)?
We have a lot of unused domains that we'd like to setup domain parking for. To keep it simple, we'd like to just change the namesevers to ns1.domainparking.com and ns2.domainparking.com (not real nameservers!) and the domains would then automatically show a simple web page. We use cpanel servers and are wondering how easy this is to do? I've seem mention of wildcard dns? Is that the answer?

Domain Parking With Win2k3 Domain Name Server (DNS)?
i have about 8 different domains i'd like to point to a nameserver (ns1./ns2.mydomain.com) on Win2k3 server, but i can't get them resolved through my nameserver without creating a manual forward lookup entry for each *parked* domain separatly.. Does anyone know how to resolve "parked" domains automatically on Win2k3 DNS?? I just can't find any answer for this, everything i've found required manual creation of lookup entries.. anyone?

Memory Issues On JaguarPC VPS. Suggestions? Recommend A Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I recently moved my site from a shared hosting plan at $5 a month to a VPS at JaguarPC. I took advantage of one of the offers here at Web Host Talk. My setup has cPanel with 320MB of RAM. I have another site running the same software (Joomla, vBulletin) with cPanel and only 256MB of RAM at KnownHost. I've had zero problems with Knownhost and the site is snappy. The site hosted at JaguarPC continues to have all kinds of problems. Running a number of sites, I don't always get to check in on my sites unless I know of a problem. I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention to this site, because it was having all types of PHP memory issues. When I first contacted JaguarPC, they said they boosted the memory in Apache. The issues remained, so I contacted them again. They recommended more RAM. Now, I checked on my KnownHost site and that's running on 256MB. I figured that maybe JaguarPC didn't allocate enough RAM when they set up the VPS. They confirmed 320MB. Not wanting to change hosts, I asked them to poke around a bit more, considering what I know about KnownHost and my success there. I received this response: have checked and you are running named service on your server. named caches dns data and this can also consume a lot of memory, sometimes over a 100 MB may be consumed by this service. In addition to cPanel and named which are most memory consuming applications running on your server, there are other applications like apache web server and the php scripts running on the server also consume some memory. It is highly recommended that you upgrade the RAM on your VPS significantly to avoid such problems which may cause disruption of service. You can find a list of RAM and other VPS addons in the following link. Instead of helping me resolve the problem, they simply keep asking me to get more RAM. For SEO purposes, I like to keep my sites on different hosts. Can anyone recommend a VPS? I was certainly unaware that "named service" had such an impact on my VPS. If that's the case, is there any harm in not having this? SEO or otherwise?

how much strain does ssl puts on the server? Lets say, a small VPS with ~300 RAM and 2.6GHz. How many clients could simultaneously have a smooth experience? (only using ssl to access their account and upload files up to 50MB)
