Hardware RAID: Is Motherboard RAID As Good As A Dedicated PCI-E Card
Mar 24, 2008Is Motherboard RAID as good as a dedicated PCI-E card? I am guessing a dedicated card is the best option, though costs more.
We are looking at buying a barebones server from Supermicro. It features an onboard RAID controller which supports RAID 0, 1, 5 & 10 - but for some strange reason it will only support RAID 5 if you use Windows. Here is a link to the page detailing the RAID features.

We are going to be running Linux, CentOS 5.1, so we will only have the choice of RAID 0, 1 or 10. This isn't an issue, as having RAID 10 on 4x SAS (15k) drives will be fine for speed and stability. What is an issue is would this RAID controller be as fast or reliable compared to a dedicated PCI-E card? If it can only use RAID 5 in windows, does that suggest this controller is too reliant on software? It would be a nightmare to suffer downtime and data loss because the controller couldn't hack it during a drive failure, or one day it decided to bugger up the array when rebooting.
So that leads me to looking at this card, this looks very good for what we need. Are adaptec a reliable brand? I've seen it advertised for £200, which is a good price.

This card features RAID 5 and 6, would RAID 6 be better than RAID 10 for redundancy, or is it too slow to bother with? Also it seems to have a battery module available for it, what does this achieve? Cos surely if the power dies the hard drives and motherboard can't run off this little battery, or does it just help the controller stay alive long enough with some hard drive information in its memory if the power goes out during a rebuild?
What Raid Card For A 1U Server
Sep 8, 2009I was building a 1u server a month or so ago to colocate. After screwing up the purchase of the raid card (got a pci 64 or something) its been sitting next to me not doing much. I need to go ahead and find a good raid card and get this colocated,
I have literally spent hours on Newegg, Amazon and Ebay and found nothing that really jumps out at me. When people were helping with the build before, Adaptec was recommended, but the card is now deactivated on newegg so I am looking again.

Jan 9, 2007I tried signing up for a few of those online image hosts. I would upload a few images, carefully read their instructions, and code my page to go get the pictures to show up on my webpages. I tried about four different ones. No matter what I did, following their instructions, looking in different browsers, checking file names etc, I always had trouble finding my pictures. Not just trouble--my images just never show up when I put them in these free online file places. Usually I am pretty sharp about stuff like this but now I have to wonder: What is going on with that?

Are there any readers here who have tried using the paid solution offered by bestwebforms.com? When I visited the site, it seemed that their CAPTCHA graphics files looked a little primitive. Since I have not downloaded their package, I do not know how well it works, or how effective it might be in discouraging web form spamming.
They say that one only needs to insert a short JavaScript on the web page in order to implement their pre-formatted forms. But what if one wishes to apply their CAPTCHA solution to a custom-designed form and lay-out that is already in use (i.e.: currently running without CAPTCHA)?
It would be terrific if any readers could reply with a list of their favorite sources for CAPTCHA scripts, particularly those which can be easily implemented without extensive knowledge of perl or other programming experience.
Assuming one has good HTML and basic script editing capability, which scripts would you suggest? Do they generate the CAPTCHA graphics on-the-fly, or do they depend on a static library of existing .gif files?
Have you tested the script(s) yourself, and arrived at any conclusions on its/their efficacy in combatting web form spam, while still permitting reasonable access by humans with various levels of visual acuity, i.e.: the ability to discern different colors, or contrast between the characters and background?
Since I've read that there may be a number of effective anti-CAPTCHA schemes used by spammers out there (which are able to automatically decode or read the obscured characters with some sort of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology, I would like to know whether the whole CAPTCHA approach is now considered to be an exercise in futility.
For example, I noticed that Network Solutions had been using CAPTCHA for a time on their WHOIS search page, but later abandoned it. I'm assuming they may have concluded that it was hindering more valid users from performing searches, than it was effective in stopping spam submissions.
A while back, I did read some forum posts which suggested wrapping the form action in JavaScript, in order to foil certain automated spambots. However, after implementing that solution, I have not found it to be entirely effective. Of course, I have no way of knowing whether the comment spam that we continue to get now was generated by a human or a spambot.
Finally, it seems that our web host's Spam Assassin software, while it is pretty decent at detecting spam in regular e-mail, does nothing to filter spam in web forms whose input is delivered by e-mail. I don't understand why this is, since it still must pass through the mail server in order to be delivered to me.

Feb 6, 2007I have a question regarding people who are stealing content off my site (using the same URL of my site). I would like to make a rule (in .htaccess, I imagine) that does the following:
If the graphic is placed on the desired domain, put the correct graphic in place.
If the graphic is placed on another domain (stolen), put a 'substitute' graphic in place that says that the content was stolen.
I know you can do something along these lines (I used to have an .htaccess that prevented people from linking to pages outside of designated domains) but I'm not sure if you can narrow it down much more. However, it would rock if it was possible.

In this chassis, I am going to be using an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard [url], and I'll be installing a 3ware 8006-2LP RAID card.
I just want to make sure that that RAID card will work with that motherboard, and also I want to verify that the Supermicro CSE-RR1U-X riser card is the correct model for this motherboard and RAID card.
I've got a couple of basic servers built in the supermicro mini 1U (CSE-512L-260B) chassis, but I've never had to deal with riser cards before, so I wanted to make sure everything is compatible and is going to fit correctly before I purchase them.
Installing A Linksys 10/100 Lan Card
Jan 20, 2007i have just installed esx server from vmware which as far as i know is a moded version of redhat. i just brought that lan card and put it in. when intsalling the os it seemed to pick it up straight away. and it wanted to use the tulip driver and infact on the driver cd tuplip is given. so i thought it was all well uptill i tried logging in through the browser insterface. it came up with nothing. so i did ifconfig which only showed the lo device. i then did a lsmod tulpis ind it brought up this.

im not very good with linuk so im not sure what the interface is called. i tried ifconfig eth0 up but i dont know how to check if its called eth0 or somehting else. their is no gui just a bash.

How Secure Is A DRAC Card
May 29, 2007Thinking of entry-level collocation for a 1u or 2u 1750 or 2850 server (but not a separate hardware firewall at this point) I'm wondering if I should equip it with a DRAC card on a separate switch port ($10 more per month for an extra switch port). However one concern: how secure is a DRAC card? It would seem to allow you to login with a standard username and strong password, but I still fear it could be brute forced since I'm not aware of a brute-force-detection mechanism that would run on the drac card itself.
Is the only way I can use a DRAC card and feel secure about it to also have a box in front of the DRAC card to lock down and monitor access to the DRAC's IP? Or am I worrying over nothing (I'm not very familiar with DRAC cards yet.)
Effect Of The Network Card
Dec 10, 2007I've been reading more and more posts about how a quality network card is important. We build all of our servers from new, quality parts but honestly we always rely on the built in NIC on the motherboard (which are brand name motherboards, but nonetheless)
How can a lesser quality NIC effect a server other than total failure of network activity? What signs should we look for and what are quality brands? My first guess is dropped packets or low throughput. I've also heard of people saying that load can go up from a bad NIC - is there any truth to that?
Raid Card To Help With Iowait
Dec 17, 2007I was wondering if anyone has had luck with 3ware 9650's in a RAID 10 to help bring down iowait?
I currently have a VPS node that see's spikes in iowait and i'd like to bring it down. I've been considering getting a 9650 in a JBOD setup (so then I don't need to reinstall the whole node) with a battery backup to enable the cache.
My two questions are:
- In JBOD, does the write cache enable at all?
- Would the write cache help bring down the iowait much?
Drive wise we have 4 x 500GB drives in a raid10 (soft for now).

3ware Card And Ovzkernel
Oct 23, 2007When trying to load an ovzkernel it loses support for the 3ware 8006 controller. As suggested on ovzforums, it says to load the new 3dm2 tools. I tried this but when I try to install it, it says it can't find the 3dm2 binary.
