Sandbox Servers And Syncrhonization/Deployment
Feb 10, 2007I have a website (PHP, MySQL, or whatever dynamic language and database engine), and I want to set up a sandbox server dedicated only to testing scripts before deploying them, what is my best approach?
I have thought about using rsync to syncrhonize the PHP files. Before testing I would pull the files from the "Live" server using rsync, and then use some way to replicate the live MySQL database to the sandbox. Once done, the procedure would be reversed. Possibly make backups in the middle.

Oct 26, 2007I have a server runnning WHM/cPanel and want to purchase an SSL certificate that I would set up on a specific domain. ex: secure.myserver.com, and then allow individuals hosted on my server to use that domain (instead of their own) for SSL purposes, if they didn't want to purchase their own certificate. (ex. They would use: secure.myserver.com/~customer/myfile.php)
My question is, what kind of SSL certificate would be appropriate for this. Could I purchase a single-root certificate from RapidSSL and set it up on that domain?

Oct 29, 2008I am trying to do something that I believe is fairly non-standard. What I am looking to do is create a system where I can rapidly deploy web sites without having to restart named and Apache. For example, if a customer completes a process, I want to be able to turn that site on immediately using a temporary domain (somecompany.example.com or othercompany.example.com).
With some programming language (hopefully PHP) I would like to get the customer up and running with their site immediately without having to restart the server. While doing some research I found I could use MyDNS which uses MySQL to manage DNS data instead of configuration files. MyDNS can be updated on the fly.
For Apache I have seen wildcard configurations, but everyone seems to be suggesting the use of mod rewrite. I would prefer that the domain maps directly to a specific folder:
somecompany.example.com -> /sites/somecompany/htdocs
(*.example.com -> /sites/*/htdocs)
Does anyone know how I might do this with Apache. It seems similar to user directories (example.com/~username -> /home/*/htdocs)

Apr 13, 2007How do I sweep my entire server and chmod a particular filename located in the cgi-bin to either 0, 755, etc?
For example, to disable a particular perl script running on my system on over 100 accounts in the /cgi-bin/file.cgi I want to chmod the file on every account that it comes up on that /cgi-bin/file.cgi needs to be chmod'd to 0.
Anyone know how to do this thru ssh or another method?

Jul 17, 2007I have been playing with the idea now for a while to create a site that will list all the data centres (datacenters for you americans) in the world.
Obviously I do not have the definitive list, so it would be community based, where users can add DC's and reviews can be written for it...

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Switch Off FTP Server-wide?
Jun 28, 2014Just in the process of upgrading to new box Plesk 12 (Ubuntu 14.04LTS). ON the previous (plesk 10) I was able to disable ftp services by editing /etc/xinetd.d/ftp_psa - this doesn't seem to be an option now. How to do this on plesk 12?

Aug 13, 2008i have a server with whm/cpanel and would love to have custom error pages that work server wide not just for a specific domain. I have tried adding the "ErrorDocument 404 errors/404.htm" to the httpd.conf file but it doesn't work.
I have no trouble getting custom errors to work for a specific domain but can't seem to get it to work server wide.
Has anyone else tried to tackle this and actually had success?

When would I use a wild card *.mydomain.com as apposed to just mydomain.com
I hear talk also of a server wide ssl how is this possible do you create the ssl for the IP rather than the domain
What is the best way to do this on a dedicated box with WHM/cpanel to where my users have secure access to their webmail, cpanel client area etc.

Dec 17, 2007I am trying to access my server remotely using Windows' Remote Desktop Connection. It functions perfectly, but it does not go full screen because my local screen res is 1680x1050 ...
Does anyone know any other remote desktop applications which work better in this way?
I know I could just change the local res settings but it is a bit of a nuisance and looks really weird if I set it to something non-wide-screen...
Linux Server-wide Anti-spam Solution
May 2, 2007for a server-wide anti-spam solution I can implement on a Linux server. The mail queues are constantly getting backlogged with thousands of messages which bring the servers to a crawl. There are really two issues the solution needs to address.
1) Spam
2) Spam sent to other people that have the from address forged with our clients' email addresses.
We have spam assassin installed for individuals to use, but there's got to be some sort of solution that can clear out the vast majority of the junk before it even gets to the queue.
It probably goes without saying, but the solution needs to be open-source or have a very inexpensive license.

Aug 19, 2012I have been trying to enable server-wide compression using deflate.My server is running a fresh install of plesk panel 11 installed over a fresh centos 6 64. The configs and settings (aside from files I mention) have not been changed at all from default.
I have created a new file in /etc/httpf/conf.d/deflate.conf This file is being included when Apache is restarted, so that's definitely working and the html doc compresses. But not matter what I do (I have tried every combination Google would find) css and js files will not compress. At my previous workplace we also used a Plesk server and nobody could ever get compression working there either.

It's something need lots of space like file hosting (but most file less than 10 mb each)
So i need an affordable dedicated (or semi-dedicate) with less than $100 a month to host my site. Until it grow and i can move site to local provider (better speed, more expensive)
Currently i aimed to netfirms enterprise 2. it's $69 a month, 100 GB Space/2000 Data Trans.
Do you recommend this to me ? Or other's are better.
Available RAM Windows Enterprise 2003
May 11, 2009I am running a server with Windows Enterprise 2003 installed, it has 32GB RAM installed but in control panel I can only see 15.5GB RAM, I understand graphics cards etc will take some of the RAM so I suspect Windows is only seeing 16GB, instead of the installed 32GB, anyone any idea as to why I do not see all 32GB.
