Server Lost Ability To Resolve Names

May 20, 2009

my server seems to have lost its ability to do name lookups:

Quote:

[root@cp ~]# wget =>`ossec-hids-2.0.tar.gz'
Resolving failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.

it hangs on the "Resolving bit for a long time.

my resolv.conf file is as follows:

Quote:

nameserver 66.90.68.16
nameserver 66.90.68.26

which are the 2 nameservers of my datacenter.

I tried doing a /scripts/upcp --force and I get this:

Quote:

[root@cp ~]# /scripts/upcp --force
Updating /scripts...
Sync Source:

and it just hangs there

the sites I am hosting use PHP script that make a lot of outbound web connections so this is crippling my server

PHP Bug- PHP Can't Resolve Domains, Server Can

Jul 23, 2007

My VPS was a clean build 2 weeks ago and so far i have installed cpanel and configured everything and added accounts. I began that one of my scripts that uses gethostbyaddr($ip) was failing to resolve any of the ip's it received. I made another PHP file to test this, with this code:

PHP Code:

 <?phpecho file_get_contents[url];?>

Resulting in:

Warning: file_get_contents() [function.file-get-contents]: php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known

The thing is, the VPS is resolving domains just fine

I can ping, send emails, even dig:

Code:
[root@server etc]# dig google.com

Odd Domain Names Using My Server IPs

Sep 22, 2007

I have 10 dedicated Ip addresses and recently spotted in my stats for one of my sites, that some odd domain names were mirroring my site. On checking they were using my IP address and displaying my website.

I have no idea how they could have done this.

I changed my sites IP address to anopther in my range, however these domain names still point to my IP and whatever site I have put there.

Someone has said to me it is a form of phishing, but I dont know how they could have done this and whether I can somehow stop this happening. The domains that have kind of hijacked my IP are
ipinikoparan dot com
and
durmakyokyoladevam dot com

odd enough domain names, could someone have set this up and is it some kind of security risk?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: CentOS 6 - Host Name Must Resolve To Correct IP Address Of Server

Feb 15, 2015

I have a fresh server running CentOS 6 (final). I am trying to install Plesk 11.5.30 but i am experiencing some problems. When i run the plesk-installer i get this message:

Your host name must resolve to the correct IP address of your server, unless you are using network address translation (NAT).

Please quit Parallels Installer, fix the host name resolution problem, and then try installing again.

You can skip the hostname check and continue the installation, however, in such a case, the installer cannot guarantee successful installation.

Now, in my /etc/hosts file i have this:

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6

Is this correct? Or do i need to add/change something else?

My server is in the clound.

Server To Handle 100s Of New Domain Names

May 11, 2008

We are setting up 100s of new domain names every day. We are only hosting a simple blog, in fact with our current setup we are on a HostGator Reseller account and we are just using one account meaning one single cPanel account.

We have a script that automatically runs when people sign up for our service, this script sets up an addon domain on that same single cPanel account with the same document root. Our modified wordpress blog simply looks at the HTTP_HOST in the config file and opens a separate database tables for every new domain name.

The problem we are running into is not the bandwidth usage, nor storage space. But simply the mass addon domains. The cPanel adddomain.html script seems to be getting ran so many times it is overloading the web server.

So I have read about some other people here WHT that are starting to use a new server software that uses a lot less server resources then WHM and cPanel. So I am wondering what hosting companies can provide that sort of a server.

Specifically:

Storage: A couple hundred GB
Bandwidth: 1000s of GB
Server software to run PHP scripts and mySQL databases
Ability to create 1000s of addon domains every day.

Does this need to be an array of servers?

We are ready to get moving on a deal now.

Host Ability To Self Detect

Nov 13, 2008

Do web hosts have the means to self-detect or self-correct problems with people's websites? If so, is there a name for this ability?

Seems that every host I've used has to be *told* about major problems, such as the server or database being down completely. I'm tired of going out of town fearing a site crash. I don't expect them to catch every problem, but when the failure is so blatant, it would be nice if they caught it...

How would I find a host who does this?

Have An AMD64 With Ability To Install RPMs

Apr 8, 2008

This is a bit off topic but I am looking for a person kind enough to test install a few RPM packages on an AMD 64 bit system with a 64 bit OS (Fedora or otherwise), preferably an Opteron but not required. The RPMs in question are IBM's DaCS which is something designed for a supercomputer yet to be created. We have one part of the DaCS model but oddly enough, we don't have any AMD systems (tons of high end Intels however).

On Intel machines, after installing these RPMs, the binary that is to be run (/usr/sbin/hdacsd) fails with a "Floating point exception" so I'd like to find out if this is an issue caused by a 3DNow optimizations to these RPM binaries (Intel does not support 3DNow) or something else.

I've put up the RPMs at [url] and the main one to be installed is dacs-hybrid-3.0.0-7.x86_64.rpm

After installation, run hdacsd (possibly in /usr/sbin) and tell me if you get the floating point exception.

450 Transfer Aborted. Link To File Server Lost

Dec 29, 2007

I seem to keep getting this error whenever I try to uploading something thats too large.

It transfers fine for a few mins, then it stalls and eventually I get this error message.

Small files are fine since they don't take long to transfer, it just seems that I can't have a file transferring for too long.

I can actually get the damn file through but since I keep getting that error, I need to keep manually clicking on the transfer button. So it takes about 20 tries before I can finish a 30MB file. And I have a lot of files to transfer so thats very troublesome.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? I tried turning off the firewall and opening ports on my router but it still doesn't work. Using Cute FTP.

Mirror/Mirroring Site Hosting/aka: Impressed At Ability Of Cheap Hardware To Serve Static HTML

Nov 5, 2009

We recently began to mirror a large number of open source projects with a dedicated mirror server on our network and I was surprised not only with how popular the mirror server has become, is, but also of the ability of the hardware we're using to keep up with the load.

At an given time, the mirror seems to be pushing at least 50 Megabits of trafficthe server is also an IRC server (irc.igsobe.com) for customers and internal staff communications.

The hardware is a low end Dell Pentium 4 @ 2.66 GHZ server, running with 512MB of RAM and a 400 GB ATA hard drive. CentOS v5.3 is the operating system.

If you're interested, you can view the HTML logfile analysis here but that doesn't tell the full story as FTP users make up a good portion of the traffic. We've received over a quarter million hits in the first few days of November alone.

18:14:15 up 65 days, 9:04, 5 users, load average: 0.31, 0.69, 0.56

The only change that I made to the default configuration was lowering the maximum number of Apache servers to 128.

Just thought I'd share this information as I wouldn't have thought a server with such a small amount of RAM would be able to serve up so much data, even though we are talking strictly static HTML files.

I'll definitely keep this in mind when clients ask me for those "what type of dedicated server should I use for XXX" type discussions that are had all too often with clients.

Domain Does Not Resolve :: Domain Name Server (DNS) Issues

Aug 14, 2008

I've been having some DNS problems with one of my domains for quite some time now. The domain does not always resolve - some go days without being able to access the site.

I ran a simple BASH script to show what I mean. I replaced my domain with "mysite.net" and the IP with "xx.xx.xxx.xxx".

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I have gone over the DNS records countless times and see no problems. The site is hosted on my own dedicated server.

Hostname Does Not Resolve To Any IP

Oct 31, 2009

I hope your day is going good. I've been trying to fix a problem I had all week. I receive daily email notification that "example.[url]" does not resolve to any IP. However, when in WHM, it already contains Server Main Ip: 208.53.183.125. I've tried a few solutions from the web, but to no avail:

IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
The hostname (example.mydomainname.com) resolves to . It should resolve to 208.53.183.125. Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as well as the 'A' entry in zone file for the domain.

Some are all of these problems can be caused by
/etc/resolv.conf being setup incorrectly. Please check this file if you
believe everything else is correct.

You may be able to automaticly correct this problem by using the
'Add an A entry for your hostname' under 'Dns Functions'
in your Web Host Manager

1) Within WHM, I have the following:

-Add an A entry for your hostname (I only have one listed)
Hostname: example.mydomainname.com
Server Main Ip: 208.53.183.125

-Primary/secondary nameserver
Primary Nameserver: ns1.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.26)
Secondary Nameserver: ns2.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.27)

-Resolver Configuration
Primary Resolver: 66.90.68.25
Secondary Resolver: 66.90.68.26

-Additional IP my webhost gave me to use:
208.53.181.26 (used in primary name server)
208.53.181.27 (used in secondary name server)
208.53.181.28

-Current DNS Zone listing:
example.com (my website URL that is currently working)
example.mydomainname.com (hostname I made myself that contains the server main IP)
ns1.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.26)
ns2.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.27)

2) My edit "edit /etc/resolv.conf" contains the following:
Search localdomain
nameserver 66.90.68.25
nameserver 66.90.68.26

Issue: I receive daily email notification that "example.mydomainname.com" does not resolve to any IP. However, when in WHM, it already contains Server Main Ip: 208.53.183.125.

DNS :: Domains Will Not Resolve

Aug 5, 2009

I've been having this problem for a while now. I have a dedicated linix server running with the cpanel. I've setup my own nameservers and for the most part it all runs without a problem. However, every now and then the domains will not resolve for many people.

This may only last a few minutes but it happens regularly. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. The server is still available via IP address. Also, any domain name set as a nameserver with the registrar is not affected by this problem. All other domains are affected. This problem has persisted over many cpanel updates.

I have gone through all the nameserver files (I can think of or have read about) looking for something that may be causing this but everything looks normal.

Domain Name Resolve Problems In WHM

Nov 4, 2009

I have installed WHM 11 on centos 5.3.

Currently I get problems that domains at certain places not open.

Like e.g I write my server IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX it works fine and I get ping reply also, but at the same time I write [url]it would not resolve.

Similarly in web browser I write server IP it gives cpanel page but on same computer I write [url]I get page cannot be opened, when I refresh the page at certain times then it would open. Now once it is opened in the same computer it would work fine here.

In some internet connections it works fine i.e no problems, in some connections get similar problems that domains does not resolve properly.

I checked my named service works fine.
