What Is The Best Method To Protect My Server From Data Lost
Jul 3, 2007
I have dedicated server at GoDaddy and I am hosting very important web service for our company. We have only one HDD on server and no FTP backup. What is the best method to protect data and whole server from HDD crash? Is it enough to add second HDD?
I was hesitant to even post this because I've been on the net for so long, that and I know just about every method out there. However, large corporations obviously can't live with loosing data so I figured I'd see what everybody else is doing out and figure out my next battle plan for archiving data.
Here's what happened. I had triple backups of some data. I burned them twice on DVD (yes, two DVD's of each archive) as well as had them on a WD hard drive. ALL are dead or unreadable. I had the discs in a DVD binder and they were never touched for a good 5 years. I put them in a player (multiple players) and only certain parts were read.
Other parts came up with errors. (Yes, I'm aware there are companies that offer recovery for both CD/DVD and Hard drives, but they always charge a fortune and in some cases, aren't worth it). This was Memorex media btw which might of had something to do with it, but at the time I thought it was the best. Next I went to the hard drive. This was stored in a room temp house over a good 5 years and when I plugged it in to a computer's IDE port, nothing. Not sure exactly what's wrong with the drive and I'm sure it could be fixed and recovered, but once again, that's not my question.
My Question: What methods are you using to store your archives over long periods of time? Any recommendations on hardware? I'm thinking of DLT Tape backups and of course doing RAID next but don't want to run into the same problem in 5 years. How can I sleep at night (which is already impossible) knowing that in 5 or 10 years when I'm ready to get into my backups that they will be there?
What are you doing and what do you recommend? Better yet, what the hell is Hollywood doing to keep all their music and movies safe?
I recently bought an SSL certificate to protect user data. I installed the cert in WHM. But when I go to my website in https://, my browser says (Safari can’t open the page [url] because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “*domain name*”.)
Do you know what's happening and how to fix it? I've never dealt with SSL before, so this is very frustrating.
a few days ago one of the dedicated servers i was using got wiped out by midphase/softlayer. i also wrote a post on digital point and the users there suggested i mention this incident here for people to know......
We have recently had an IT guy perforn the upgrade from wss 2.0 to wss 3.0 and we have since lost the entire database architecture and I believe the data stored therein. Is there someplace on the server where the data records could be stored and has anyone had similar problems with this type of upgrade? The IT firm says it's a problem with a security patch from microsoft but I can't find anythying referencing that online.
The following may provide some background on what transpired and how it has been handled thus far; these are from correspondence between our company and the IT firm in chronological order:
Our initial inquiry: 5/23 We have several questions regarding the upgrade of the SPS software, not the least of which being why was the upgrade performed without any advance notice to our office, this notice would have allowed us to take the precaution of having our people save their work in progress and prevented the loss of data and time that we experienced. In the future we would ask that we be shown the professional courtesy of prior notification before commencing any major work to the server environment.
At about 1:00 yesterday all of the computers at the shop went down, we contacted (IT REP) and he said that you had started the install of the 3.0 software that morning and at the time he said that the install was complete.
And since that time we have had multiple problems with the system. First we have no remote access, and receive a server error of the server application is not available, the lay-out of the pages does not process properly ie…the column order displays in a random sequence and not as called for in the column settings. The default page now has the added search feature however the format of the prior software has been retained which causes the navigation of that particular page to differ from the rest of the site.
Please contact us as soon as possible, as (COMPANY OWNER) has no access to the system and no e-mail. Reply from IT Rep: 5/24 IT REP worked on the phone for over 7 hours yesterday. The Microsoft Tech and IT REP agreed to continue this morning. I know as of last night the remote portion of the Companyweb and the internal site were functioning. However, they are continuing to work to retrieve the existing data.
Did you ever add the other external hard drive to your backup rotation? If so, please let IT REP know. I have meeting this morning until 11:30, if you need anything please contact IT REP.
We will discuss what caused the problem and future prevention after all is resolved. Our response: 5/25 I am inquiring as to the progress toward restoration of the company web. As you are already aware, the data contained in the company web is crucial to the day to day operation of our business. We are not able to access any of our scheduling information for installations, production or customer service issues. While we have been able to track most of these items thus far, the amount of information available for scheduling next week is quite limited.
It would be helpful to have some indication of when we expect to be restored as well as an estimate of the percentage of data which may be lost, so that we can begin to formulate our response to the situation.
I am certain that you and IT REP understand just how serious the consequences of this situation can become, and assume that you will be capable of providing us with periodic updates as to your progress.
I would also be interested to find out if there are plans to work this out over the weekend or if it has been decided to place this on the back burner and resume restoration of our vital data on tuesday. IT Reply: 5/25 At this point, this is a Microsoft issue that they are working on to resolve – I’m only facilitating their ability to access the server and work. I am doubtful that they work on the weekend, but I will find out. IT REP and I have spent roughly 25 hours in the last 2.5 days working on this, myself until almost midnight last night, so he and I are putting forth every conceivable effort to resolve this. In the mean time, I have turned off the automatic updates (which are enabled by default) to prevent this type of thing from happening again. Keep in mind that if there were 2 hard drives being used in a rotation as IT REP suggested, we’d have backups from before the failed patch to revert to.
As soon as I have any indication of a target time for resolution, I will not hesitate to let you know. Our next question: 5/25 Have we checked to hard drive that is currently in use to see if there is anything salvageable on there. Isn't the server partitioned and mirrored?Latest IT correspodence: 5/25 I have a few suggestions from microsoft that we were going to try, but it looks as though someone took the external drive off the server, so we were unable to do it. I was just checking to see that someone did do that, and that it's in a safe place until it can be reconnected.. The server uses a RAID 5, not mirroring. Mirroring wouldn't matter either, as in a mirrored configuration, 2 drives mirror each other - when the primary is written to, the secondary (mirror) is immediately updated. I'm pretty sure we can get the data files (.dwg, .xls. ,doc, etc) out of the sharepoint database, but we'll need the drive reconnected. The Microsoft engineers have left for the day, but we'll be back on it next week on Tues when they're back in.
1- i did Os Reload with new Hard drive for "home" 2- data "backups" drive lost
3- replaced the old home drive as "/old drive"
4- " /old drive " is now the secondry drive in my server and it has the all sites usres and evry thing
5- what i need , to trasfer, copy this sites from " /old drive " to "home"
but data center said
The /olddrive/home directory contains the contents that were previously in the /home directory. You can copy files from this directory to any other directory on your server.
The command to copy files in the UNIX environment is the "cp" command.
The user directories in /olddrive/home directory contain the web page files for the users. However, simply copying the contents over will not recreate the users or domain entries in DNS/httpd. If you wish these back you will need to recreate them manually or restore them from backups.
There are several methods of offering network path redundancy. The basic decision for me has come down to:
Do it at Layer 2 Do it at Layer 3
At the moment we have layer 2 redundancy to each server. 2NICs on the server up with one having the IPs for apache/mysql/etc. each nic going into a seperate switch and the switches connected together, with 2 routers running VRRP to handle the gateway. Everything is Vlaned.
So basicaly the switch redundancy is done by spanning tree and the IP redundancy is done with a process on the router/server to move the IP to the other router/server NIC if there is an issue.
I am thinking about going with 2 fully seperate networks. in differant subnets. where each router would have a gateway. the routers would talk to each other and they would speak OSPF or ISIS with the servers. This way I would move hosting onto loopback IPs on the servers and those loopback IPs would be advertised to the both routers through seperate networks. Again everything would be Vlanned.
This has the advantage of getting rid of spanning tree which has caused issues from time to time. It would keep redundancy up and we could standardize on the routing daemon ran on the servers allowing all of the various OSs we run to have the same basic config for network redundancy. Where now each OS tends to have its own solution. This would make life easier from a config and troubleshooting point of view.
After some experimenting with Linux VPS setups, I'm eager to explore windows VPS software.
Two questions I guess, first off, what is the cheapest method of offering multiple VPS accounts on a windows server? Are there any free or build in Microsoft methods?
Second, what is the easiest way of doing so? (Simple setup, as hands off as possible)
I realize the cheapest may not be the easiest and vice versa. I'm downloading Parrallels Virtuozzo trial right now, but would like to learn what else is out there.
I will be storing personal customer information in mysql, so security is driving all my requirements. I was thinking the architecture will be :-a dedicated web server within a DMZ and placed behind a firewall and border router.
a dedicated database server inside the internal network behind another firewall, All running Linux
building out and management of the servers to be done by hosting provider or third party Please feel free to comment on this setup.
QuestionsIs a reverse proxy a benefit for security.
Am I right in saying that a reverse proxy hides the OS and server details from prying eyes and provides another layer of security
if a reverse proxy server is a benefit, is it normally the default architecture at most reputable hosts.
Is there a way to protect apache server from overload? For example Nginx has a module called SysGuard when system load or memory use goes too high all subsequent requests will be redirected to the URL specified by the 'action' parameter.
I have few scripts, but hackers again upload at some way c99, and hack some SMF forums at server. Server like server they cannot hack, but user account they can. So please tell me what you advice?
i did make a big message on here but it deleted when i back spaced
my website is aviation cafe dot net / sample and i need you to help me with password protecting a webpage, i wanted the address to be / the silver sword and definitly not to look like it does now.
some vBulletin customers facing to that error message, with session table with attachment only. Other just work fine. It's not because of server load. The load is just around 0 - 0.1
I have increased wait_timeout to 200 and max_allowed_packet to 64MB. Each attachment file in those vBulletin is just around 1-3MB.
I seem to keep getting this error whenever I try to uploading something thats too large.
It transfers fine for a few mins, then it stalls and eventually I get this error message.
Small files are fine since they don't take long to transfer, it just seems that I can't have a file transferring for too long.
I can actually get the damn file through but since I keep getting that error, I need to keep manually clicking on the transfer button. So it takes about 20 tries before I can finish a 30MB file. And I have a lot of files to transfer so thats very troublesome.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? I tried turning off the firewall and opening ports on my router but it still doesn't work. Using Cute FTP.
