Reasonably Priced, Impressive Bandwidth Server?
Jan 16, 2009
I've been using polurnet for a while now, and I think they have great service - but I would like more than 20 gb / month bandwidth. Does anyone know of a host which is reasonably priced and with decent service, but with more impressive bandwidth?

This is really my first time ever complaining about any hosting provider. Seeing how HiVelocity is a pretty big name and has quite a few reps here on WHT as well.
So I own one of the $8 VPS I have with them. I don't use it for much other than as one of my DNS cluster servers. I figured I probably won't need much help or support with it anyway.
I recently submitted a ticket to request them to help me install a few modules to the node that wasn't installed during the initial set up. After submitting a ticket in regards to the issue I received a response about 1 hour later asking to state the specifics. However, note that I first had to bring it to their attention via live chat otherwise I'm not sure how much longer I would've needed to wait. About an hour after their reply I replied with the specifics expecting a response within a couple hours. Anyway, I woke up this morning, still no reply. Just got home from work, STILL no reply after 7 hours. I then once again brought the ticket to the attention of their live chat tech support. I'm being told that it should be resolved within the next few hours (which I hope is true).
So far I'm not getting a very positive first impression of HiVelocity's "impressive" support.

I haven't posted a negative review or thread here so far but my experience over the past month with HiVelocity has been so awful that I really felt it necessary. Their support is absolutely the worst. Especially over the past week, a production server that I'm paying good money for ($200/m) has been down more than up.
Looks like I'm not the only one (today!)
[url]
My tickets are often not read after say 2 hours until I specifically go and chat with the canned response man 'Ron' on the end of the liveperson chat in which case someone then usually responds to it.
When my tickets are finally read, they are certainly not read properly. I have to keep asking the same question often 3 times in a ticket, before someone apologizes for missing the question and responds to it.
The server was previously locking up constantly. They advised of a hardware failure. They cloned both drives AND I paid for RAM and CPU upgrades. The server is still constantly down. Each time I place a ticket, I get told "the server is running fsck" - that is all the information I seem to be able to get out of them. This also seems to take a day now rather than the 30 minutes it did before.
There are clearly hardware problems with the server. An FSCK now takes forever. Any disk or memory intensive task takes about 8 times what it should or did before and often locks the server. IO WAIT stats in 'top' are very high and the server is unable to remain up for more than a few hours. They don't seem to agree, and just keep running fsck on the disk each time I put in a ticket and bringing the server back up after a day often for an hour or two.
Since no one seems able to offer any kind of decent level of support, I've requested them to supply a KVM so that I can detail the exact issues myself. They informed me that they were all in use and one would be available within an hour and that they would contact me as soon as it was available - that wasn't a problem. Well it wasn't a problem 24 hours ago, in the mean time I'm still waiting for it..
I have 4 servers with SagoNet and 8 Servers with UK Solutions and have been doing this for about 5 years now. I only ended up with this server at HiVelocity due to a business that I purchased and this is where the server was located.
I would NOT recommend HiVelocity.

Is there a colo provider that has a free private network for use between their locations, similar to what SL has for their dedicated servers between facilities? They have 10GigE between their locations, with free unlimited usage.
We have around 40 servers now, and colo would really make sense, but we are doing multicasting stuff so we really need a backend network to support our services, as well as many locations for better delivery quality.

I have a Sonicwall NSA 3500. Does anyone know if you can use it to create bandwidth charts of Network Objects (e.g. IPs or Groups of IPs)?
I am thinking something like Cacti, but I don't know the code to pull that info or if it's even technically possible.

I have a dedicated for my site using Cpanel/WHM. My bandwidth limit is 1500GB and I usually have about 1000GB/month. But 3 weeks ago my hosting provider notified me that I am close to my bandwidth limit. I have checked both Cpanel and WHM and they showed half of that number. The company was telling me I had 1500GB and Cpanel/WHM that I have 800GB. They told me that the data center was counting the right number and gave me a link to check my real bandwidth.
My first thought that they might try to fool me. After their prompt I have checked through ssh that my site sends about 3-9MB. They told me that they can not find from where my extra traffic is coming from. My users are about the same and my statistics show the normal stats like every other month.
I was wondering from where all this traffic is coming from? Is it from hotlinking? Is it from some flash games I have? They ensured me that all these are included in my stats. Could it be my RSS?
My other thought is that might my server is hacked and used for bad causes. My hosting providers are searching it right now. The last 2 days I get a "High 5 minute load average alert" from my WHM. It usually was from 1 up to 4 but the last days it goes from 6 to 50!
That made me believe even stronger that someone is using my server..
I do not have the experience to deal with it,

My server processor is always loaded but I use only 150 GB of bandwidth. Is it possible to find a powerful (quad core) dedicated server with only 500 - 1000 GB of bandwidth that will be cheaper?
They usually come with 2000 GB included and more.

I'm trying to test my colocated webserver's bandwidth. I found speed test links such as this one: [url]
If I just run this on from my colocated web server, would the result be credible?
Although I think these tests are designed for dsl/cable subscribers.

I have recently switched from shared hosting and there I had a strange deviation between cpanel bandwidth and AwStats bandwidth. Unitl I changed to a dedicated box I got about ~180GB in AwStats but Cpanel only reported ~130GB.
So now I have whm setup and host my site on one cpanel account. Can I trust the bandwidth reported in that cpanel account or is there a definitive number I can get via other means? I just want to be sure I have an exact figure so I know where I'm at with regards to bandwidth. At the moment I am wondering whether it may be underreported as well?

Im currently runing many Linux servers with your basic cpanel/whm server config
Im looking for a way to limit the speed/band per user account, now i know in whm u can limit there monthly usage however thats not what im looking for.
Our small hosting company has taken off this last couple months and all our servers are located in our facilities were not using any external DC.
Because of our huge increase in clients we recently upgraded to a T3 line.
What we would like to do is limit each account to a specific speed limit cap if possible.
So for example account A would be limited to 5MB MAX , so if account A was running a illegal file hosting service that we have not caught yet our other clients would not be slowed down in the meantime.
So basically we would like to evenly distribute our band to each of our users.
If this isnt possible is there a way to limit download speeds?

Every web hosting company I've seen has a certain amount of monthly bandwidth for a dedicated server. For example, one hosting company offers a dedicated server with 10TB of bandwidth per month.
Question is, why don't web hosting companies offer 2 monthly bandwidth options like International and Local? Local bandwidth costs alot less than International bandwidth.
So for example, a web host based in the USA should have a Dedicated server with 10TB Local monthly bandwidth and 10TB International monthly bandwidth.
Can't hosting companies detect where the dedicated server is being accessed from?

today i got a message from a client asking about hosting his video himself, catch is, he has a shitload of viewers, im looking at servers in the range of quad core (maybe dual quad), 8gig, 4 hdd raid10, gige uplink, however the kicker, depending on how out of whack my estimates are, 100 to 400mbit SUSTAINED upstream (spiking all the way to max'n that 'little' gige pipe)
Has anyone got suggestions on who i should even consider for this? I'm a bit dumbfounded myself as i'v never even thought about a server on this much sustained bandwidth before today.

I have a few boxes on a special setup in a rack that I want to monitor bandwidth usage on for a while. There really isn't a way at the moment to do it switch level. Some of the servers have cPanel, some are just straight Linux (CentOS). I have seen where you can setup iptables to measure/monitor bandwidth, any other easy and effective suggestions for doing this?

Does anyone have an app they use to track the bandwidth/usage for each connected computer/server?
we have multiple servers hooked up to one internet connection, all running miscrosoft windows software. Ideally i would like ONE of the servers running microsoft 2003 to log all others network usage.
All the servers do different things, so it would be great to check which are under most demand etc.
The other thing is, naturally i dont have screens for them all, only one. So this is the main reason for remote logging. Would be hassle to have to Remote desktop into each one to check how there doing every hour etc.

Looking for a dedicated unmetered server to stream movies and audio for over 500 visitors a day. Anybody knows any place that is good?
Also, what kind of hardware specifications would be OK for me - in terms of speed and memory? And would we be OK with a 10mbit port or 100?
Would I survive on a dedicated server with a shared bandwidth?

My datacenter has told me about my server sending high amount of outbound bandwidth from my server:
During the attack time my email logs, I found several messages:
cpdavd failed @ Thu Nov 6 12:21:18 2008. A restart was attempted
automagically.
Question #1. How can I check which user is using cpdavd (connect from their PC to the home folder)
I suspect someone is connecting their PC to my server and uses very high bandwidth!
The datacenter says the attack is still going on when they plug in the server.
Question #2. How can I check what is sending outgoing traffic on the server right now?

Can anyone with previous exp. in Video Hosting/Streaming provide me some info on THE CONFIG AND BANDWIDTH REQUIREMENTS FOR ffmpeg hosting for youtube like site?
Here are the basic things-to-know & Server(s) Funtions:
1. Do Video Conversions from AVI, MKV, etc to FLV/MP4
2. Stream out these videos for viewers.
3. Expected Traffic: Quite High (1 Million Visitors/mo)
So can anyone suggest me the most suitable Server Config, Bandwidth (I'd prefer dedicated-unmetered b.w) and Host for this?
Also can anyone provide me info on the amount of video conversions and traffic a single server (with your recommended config) can handle?

Like if you try to make your own server, it would cost a few thousand right? Or bought one from IBM or something. If you rent a server, it could cost you like double that I notice or even more in a period of a year.
I was looking at the prices of Xeon 5420 and they are like only 400 or something. Motherboard, ram, hdd's shouldn't amount to too much right?
And companies are charging like 50 bucks a month for a 2 gigs of ram.
Or am I actually looking at this wrong and actually am looking at desktop components? So is bandwidth the cost for these prices? In the long run aren't people being ripped off?

if I could get some input on this. Currently I'm running an Opteron 246, 2GB RAM with 2TB bandwidth/mo. I run a single site which is currently 99% HTML, along with an invision forum which is fairly popular. I get about 300-400k pageviews per day.
Right now the server is able to handle this stuff without much of a problem, and the average CPU load is between .5 and 3 (after a TON of tweaking!) - the only exception is when the forum db is being backed up/optimized, which isn't a huge problem since it happens during the off hours.
The problem is that I'm running out of bandwidth quickly, and need to come up with some kind of solution soon. My current provider offers bandwidth at $1/GB, which to me seems crazy compared to other providers, so that's not really an option.
I was thinking about switching to a more affordable provider and upgrading hardware, but I'm not sure what the best approach would be. I'm in the process of moving my HTML content over to a PHP-powered CMS, so I need to make sure whatever I do can handle that... What might be a decent setup for a site like mine which consumes a lot of bandwidth and will probably need more CPU power in the near future for PHP/MySQL stuff?

As per topic, what is the best method to do to the hardware to improve bandwidth / uplink speed of server?
I have a production server that is used for regular file serving.
P4 3.0Ghz
4GB RAM
500GB + 160GB + 160GB hard disk
2Mbps Dedicated + 10Mbps shared.
However, the most I can pulled through the whole server is always between 1.5Mbps - 3Mbps, anyway to pull the speed up to around 10Mbps should there be availability of bandwidth for me to burst?
For any informations, the hard disk is SATA 2.

I wonder whatLs more important on a shoutcast server, to get more bandwidth per month as possible, or a faster port connection?
I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener !
This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at
a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events.
Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours.
About the port connection, what this means? :
Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN
Is it shared and from 10 to 100mbps?
I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers.
Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !!
So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth.
Whats do you think?

For the past few days, one of the server is causing a bandwidth utilization surge for the entire rack on almost daily basis. It happen for a few minutes and it went off then it will be the same thing again the next day. When the surge is happening, most of the servers on the same segment will be inaccessible for the few minutes.
The bandwidth utilization graph for my rack is recording an abnormal surge from (6mbps --> 90mbps) for the few minutes. My MRTG is showing 2 of the Plesk servers giving the problem but the NOC guys said it the Cpanel that causing the problem.
I tried logging in to both servers but could not find what's the cause for this.
