Litespeed Http Server Review

Jun 28, 2007

SO the last few months I been trying like crazy to tweak Apache or find a better http setup such as running lighttpd with Apache, etc. I have been frustrated by the way Apache easily fork bombs under any decent load or dos attack. You get about 100 bots all making 30+ connections a piece on Apache and it kills it.

Bot kids have adapted to ddos protection and connection flooding banning by sending low bandwidth attacks that do not make enough connections to get banned if you do have protection, its real low bandwidth incoming but is like a massive vampire attack outgoing. And it destroys Apache no matter what you do, what modules you have, etc. You basically have to go in and manually ban or set your connection tracking limit down to where it starts banning regular users too.

So I seen on here somewhere someone recommending litespeed to someone so I went and checked it out and was amazed by the performance. I installed the trial enterprise in a p4 server I been having problems out of lately crashing all because a busy site and I installed it in my main server.

The only thing I needed to do was compile my own php5 for it, which is real easy via their wiki instruction. After a few snags here in there I finally got it working tip top on both servers, both of which are cpanel.

So with the p4 that was always crashing and keeping hi load, We would end up having to remote reboot that box almost once a week not due to any misconfiguration or wrong setup, just couldnt take all that Apache usage and would die. We instantly noticed a difference with litespeed. The average load used to be about 1-2 always, with litespeed the average stayed about ..2 even under heavy traffic. So this was a big improvement and we have not had to reboot that box since.

My main server which I take my high risk clients on, core2duo 2.4. I thought there for a Lil bit the sites were starting to outgrow the server as its average load always was around 1 which was fairly acceptable seeing the traffic it gets so normal for Apache.

During the low bandwidth ddos attacks I would have to go in and manually ban as well as setting connection limit way down just to keep it from lagging, most of the time it still did. So I was really wanting to do something for this server to optimize http without upgrading, because it seems most of your hardware upgrades are to suit Apache anyway.

So I installed litespeed on my main server, ran into a few snags here and there but eventually got it under control. Just the last few days I got to see it put to the test.

I took on a client who was being extorted by a ddoser who recently got him kicked off his previous host. SO as soon as dns resolves here comes the crapstorm. A low bandwidth http attack, a lot got by ddos firewall on the network level which these are hard to stop because they are so similar to a legit user.

So I started getting hundreds of csf connection tracking blocked emails, was checking the site periodically and it loaded fine. So I logged in the box, looked at the load.

Was at .24. When I done netstat command there was hundreds of syns coming in and about 250 ips all connected about 50 times, this would normally kill Apache no matter what CPU/ram and all that you have. So I set connection tracking down to a reasonable level, 60 connections and I figured I would just let them get themselves banned. Looking in the live stats in the litespeed admin panel which is real cool BTW. I was seeing about 400 requests a second. This was eating a Lil bandwidth, all outgoing as that is how the attack works like a massive vamp attack. So about 2000 connection tracking emails later finally gets em all banned. The entire time the load on that box never even got to 1!

So im pretty much amazed how fast and light this http server is. And especially how well it handles dos. I about know for a fact even if you was on a non protected network it could handle as much http as your pipe will give it, and do all this at a low resource load.

This will end up saving me money on hardware upgrades in the future as well. Long review, long story, but I been so amazed by this http server I had to make a review on it. Im sure some geniouses will try to say "If you do this and that with apache you can make it just as good" But check it out for yourselves and see.

Litespeed Enterprise Review

Mar 3, 2008

15 days review .. litespeed enterprise web server

We have installed litespeed on our 4 servers ...
2 are cpanel
1 is Direct admin
1 is Plesk ..

All have websites running shopping carts, joomla cms, drupal cms, os commerce, etc....

None of our customers had any problem ... and all of them reported super fast loading ..

static websites load in a zoom ...

also cpanel loads 'like a bullet' with litespeed .. compared to apache on same server .. cpanel loads 2x times fast ...

we had problem of ddos on one of the servers .. now with litespeed its all history ..

also it seems now we can host double websites on same server with litespeed .. it reduces hardware costs ..no wonder wordpress.com uses litespeed ..

we have also tried lighthttpd .. but its too complicated ... litespeed is like plug and play usb ...

also there support is fast and have active forums ...

and they regularly come out with updates and its easy to upgrade ...and instructions in there wiki is simple and clear ..

100 Day Review Of LiteSpeed (Apache Drop-in Replacement)

Aug 14, 2007

(This is the first review I've ever written for practically anything so please bear with me. I feel the need to share my experience to try to help others after all the great advice and info I've received around here.)

If you've done everything you think you can do to improve the responsiveness of your websites like add a mysql cache, PHP opcode cache and various other tweaks, I discovered there is still one more easy thing you can do for a big improvement: replace Apache with LiteSpeed. It's way too easy not to try it and you can leave Apache completely intact to go back to at a moment's notice if you so desire.

I call LiteSpeed a "drop-in" replacement because it uses all my httpd.conf and .htaccess settings without modification. This was critical for me as my sites have some very complex rewrite rules. Other solutions like LightHttpd require extensive work to make changes if you use fancy mod-rewrite rules. LiteSpeed does not need any fiddling. LiteSpeed just adds it's own clean little web interface so you can tweak if you want to, but I didn't really have to change anything. Last but not least, LiteSpeed gets along with Cpanel and DirectAdmin without any conflicts. LiteSpeed's so compatible I can literally do this on my server and the visitors don't even notice the difference (except speed of course!)

service httpd stop
service lsws start
(and visa versa)

I discovered LiteSpeed after reading that the main WordPress.com site had switched to it and had great success (they have a quarter million registered bloggers and of course many millions more daily readers).

The main reason I tried LiteSpeed is because it's roughly twice as efficient in memory use and performance than Apache 1.3 & 2. It runs PHP up to 50% faster than Apache and static files get served several times faster (faster than thttpd & lighthttpd). So this means you can either double the number of active connections you currently max out at now, or make a regular website respond nearly twice as fast, or under heavy loads still respond within a reasonable amount of time when Apache would be completely unresponsive.

The last situation was exactly what I was hoping for and LiteSpeed helped me keep my sanity on a bad VPS node.

Basically a couple months into owning my first VPS (after many years of shared-hosting experience) I started to realise many of the industry promises about VPS are an outright lie. You are far from isolated from your neighbours. Any disk load created by bad neighbours, mysql abuse or otherwise, will directly affect you and you are powerless to stop it. It's the most poorly regulated resource on any VPS node and it can be made worse by slack, ignorant or inexperienced hosts who do things like move accounts during busy periods onto and off a node at the root level which ties up the entire node for an hour or more. Under Apache, I was getting timeouts during peak visitor times and that was very upsetting.

On top of my VPS neighbour troubles, no matter how I fiddled with Apache's settings (with all the helpful guides around here) I could not make it comfortably fit within the guaranteed memory limit of my VPS with Cpanel, which I really wanted to keep as it's much easier for my end-users. Switching to LiteSpeed caused a radical drop in memory use. I've seen nearly 1000 people online within a one minute period on one of my sites and it still fit comfortably within my memory limits and stayed extremely responsive.

I've discovered another plus to LiteSpeed along the way that no-one else seems to mention. It's the only server software that "out of the box" seems to serve web compressed (gzipped) pages properly as chunked output. This means a visitor will start to see the page immediately as soon as the first part is sent vs. on Apache, mod_gzip actually de-chunks all the output, waits for it to finish, then compresses, then sends.

Mod_deflate on Apache 2.0 was supposed to fix this but it usually doesn't work properly and I've never gotten 2.0 to do compressed+chunked output on my sites without alot of fiddling and help from PHP. It also doesn't seem as smooth as LiteSpeed's output which gives you that "silky" watch-the-webpage render effect that's mentally rewarding to visitors.

On the downside, there is one reason you wouldn't use LiteSpeed - if you use highly customised Apache mods. LiteSpeed cannot support custom mod's and their directives. It does have a lot built in however that Apache does not, so you may way to examine if you can accomplish what you are trying to do another way.

I started with LiteSpeed 3.1 and when I found an incompatibility with an obscure Apache feature (ie. ErrorDocument's as plain text output: ErrorDocument 404 "Not Found" was not supported) they fixed it for me in a day or so after I reported it on their forum. The same for PHP support of "Apache_Response_Headers". Note I am not even a commercial customer! They are now up to 3.2 which has a few other fixes.

The free version of LiteSpeed has a limit of 150 simultaneous connections (plus the linux stack of 200 more which will backlog). I've never seen that limit hit. It's so intelligent about closing connections as needed that it's not an issue for me. Perhaps on a dedicated server with many virtual hosts this will be a problem. Up to version 3.1.1 that was the only limitation, however unfortunately in 3.2 they have decided to also limit virtual hosts to "5", so that's something else you'll have to consider if you want the free version, otherwise the commercial version has a free trial and money back guarantee.

Some people were upset with me that I wouldn't name my VPS host when I was constantly complaining of troubles but that's just my style when I have nothing nice to say still have to do business with them, so don't name names. But when I have something nice to say about a company, I like to speak up. So I heartily recommend LiteSpeed and hope other people give it a try - especially if you are on my VPS node ;-)

Server Being Attacked Via Http

Jun 1, 2007

my friend's server is being attacked, the http processes shoots up causing the server load to go above 200 in minutes of starting httpd which causes server to die.

this is how the apache web server's access_log would log a normal http request;
------------------------------------------------------
"xx.xxx.xx.xx - - [01/Jun/2007:22:13:21] "GET /folder/name.gif HTTP/1.1" 200 877 [url]"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)"
------------------------------------------------------

Today when the http load increased we saw hundreds of following requests;
------------------------------------------------------
"xx.xxx.xx.xx - - [01/Jun/2007:22:13:21] "GET /? HTTP/1.1" 200 16305 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)"
------------------------------------------------------

You see the difference between a legitimate http access log entry and the above one is that the legitimate one shows the filename(GET /folder/name.gif) and domain name being requested whereas the second one shows ("GET /?")

Above requests continously originate from 30 to 40 different ip addresses. Most of them russian ips, and many form US and canada to.

When i do a grep "GET /?" in access log there are thousands of these which started just today.

I cannot block each ips because i feel they have hundreds of IPs to initiate these requests from.

Running FTP And HTTP Server From PC

Oct 21, 2007

I am trying to install a FTP Server in my computer so that I can simply login into my own computer to grab important files at work... since carrying laptop and loosing flash drives are becoming annoying .

In my home computer I have Linksys Router, and Verizon as my ISP (blocks port 80, 21 I believe).

Since Verizon blocks those ports the configuration has become a nightmare.

Using BulletProof FTP Server I made the FTP Server listen to port 5000. And in my router's forwarding section I opened the port 5000, and made it listen to 192.168.1.100 (Port Range Forwarding, TCP UDP both).

I did the same for my Apache server and made it to work with port 443.

When I access [url] the web server loads up fine.

But when I try [url] it doesn't load up, where 1.2.3.4 is my IP.

When I visit just my IP in the web browser, it loads up the Router Configuration page.

And the FTP server doesn't connect when I try with the

How Can I Http Access A Server Without A Domain

Mar 10, 2008

I've setup a dedicated server that is currently running with a domain bound to it. However this time I want to setup a centos 5.1 + latest apache 2 + bind 9 server that can only be connected to by IP address and doesn't have a domain name. So what do I need to modify in the below files to do so:

First of all will I even need bind at all? I already have it setup and (mis-)configured but I guess if I don't need it I can just take if off of autostart and stop the process "named".

Named.conf

options {
pid-file "/var/named/chroot/var/run/named/named.pid";
directory "/var/named/chroot/var/named";
query-source address * port 53;
allow-query { any; };
allow-transfer { };
recursion no;
notify no;
version "unknown";
};

logging {
category default { null; };
};

zone "server.domain.com" { type master; file "server.domain.com.db"; };
I don't even want the zone have domain.com in its name but that's just there so I could show you how I'd include server.domain.com.db.

server.domain.com.db

$TTL 14400
@ IN SOA ns1.domain.com. root.server.domain.com. (
2007052503
14400
3600
1209600
86400 )

server.domain.com. 14400 IN NS ns1.domain.com.
server.domain.com. 14400 IN NS ns2.domain.com.

localhost 14400 IN A 127.0.0.1
www 14400 IN A 78.129.174.164
I'm not sure what to do about those references to domain.com here, they shouldn't be needed but without them I don't know what to put here. ^^
Obviously I can't use those nameservers...

resolv.conf

nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 78.129.143.155
nameserver 87.117.198.200
nameserver 87.117.196.200
The only thing missing from this file is "search domain.com" at the top, is that needed even though I won't really have any domains used by this server?

/etc/hosts:

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail ....

All Http Requests To My Server Redirected

Oct 8, 2007

There seems to be some problem with my server, none of the websites hosted on my server are accessible, the http requests either return a blank page or a page with a red quare on the upper left hand corner.

I am not sure if this is some kind of infection or DNS problem or a problem with memory apache is taking up
as i have thousands of virtualhost entries in my access log accumulated over the years out of which only a few 100 websites i am serving presently, but never deleted the non-exitent virtualhost blocks.

At times the websites are opening but most of the times they are not. And when they do not open my http requets are not logged in apacha access log.

Even the customers have reported the same problem.

Also, just four days back i had a strange issue where all
http requests to my server would take me to [url].

I can SSH to server, and everything else is working fine.

Server Slowdown/crash Due To HTTP Request

Jun 13, 2008

I have a Linux server running some reasonable setups:

Opteron 180, 4 GB RAM, running 8x 36gb 15k scsi with hardware raid 10 -- this is one of the servers from WebNX advertised here not long ago

Running CentOS 4(?), Apache2/MySql 4/PHP5.2, the normal stuff.

I have only one main site on the server, which runs a pretty old PostNuke CMS in Chinese (0.7.2.3 Phoenix) + PNphpBB2 + Gallery 1.5.7 (all integrated into PostNuke). This site is pretty light in "human" traffic, getting about 20K hits per day.

Now, the problem I have noticed with this site, is related to the many MP3 files stored in the Gallery albums. There are lots of HTTP requests to these files, most maybe from Chinese search engine bots (judging from IP), that slows the server to a crawl and even crashes Apache. This happens in the late hours here when it's day time in China. As a matter of fact I just did a reboot, and in 5 minutes there are more than 1000 HTTP requests to MP3 files resulting in a traffic of 2.1+ Gb. So within minutes, the server is brought to its knees again and I can't even get the "apache status" from CPanel now: "Unable to retrieve apache status".

The company that manages the server for me said there's no security problem here. We have installed an Apache extension to limit the number of simultaneous requests to media files to 1. However that doesn't seem to help.

Apache :: Unable To Set Up Password Protection On HTTP Server

Apr 24, 2014

I'm trying to set up password protection on an Apache HTTP server, and it's not working.

First, the environment: Apache 2.4.4 installed with XAMPP Control Panel 3.2.1 under Windows 7 Professional.

http.config says "AllowOverride All."

The .htaccess file in the protected directory says:

Code:
htpasswd -c .htpasswd samples

htpasswd prompted me for the password twice, and I entered it twice. When it quit I had a file named .htpasswd in the subsidy directory. I typed it and its contents looked correct according to the examples I've seen.

Then I restarted Apache and tried to load a page from the directory. The browser simply prompted me for the username and password over and over.

The Apache error log says, "AH01617: user samples: authentication failure for "/subsidy/filename.html": Password Mismatch."

I deleted the .htpasswd file and ran htpasswd again, specifying a different (very simple) password. I also confirmed that caps lock was not on both before and after. I restarted the server, tried to load a page, and got the same problem.

Apache seems to think I'm entering the wrong password, but that seems impossible when I've just defined it myself -- and I've tried twice, intentionally choosing a very simple password the second time. If the message means what it says, the cause must be something very different from the obvious one.

Apache Down With 503 Error / Http Requests Get Redirected / Is Server Hacked

Jun 4, 2009

My Linux Server's Http Daemon (Apache) would stop serving websites ever so often, as soon as apache is restarted the error fixes iteself only to resurface within few hours.

The apache process would still be running i.e. apache does not die but no websites hosted on my server would be accessible from browser. And when this happens the apache logs do not log any http requests.

Instead when this happens all http requests to my server would be redirected to some weird Trojan website and my Norton Antivirus would show an Alert/Warning, for example;
"Browser exploit at www.xxx.xxx was blocked"
Risk Name: MSIE WebViewFolderIcon ActiveX Control BO

or another error like;
"Auto-Protect has detected Trojan.Fakeavalert".

At first i thought the problem could be with my Laptop/ISP so i logged on to the server via SSH and opened try to open a website using command line "lynx mywebsite.com" and it shows following error;
"Alert!: HTTP/1.0 503 Service Unavailable".

Now if i assume my laptop were to be infected, then as soon as i restart my apache and visit mywebsite.com eveything returns to normal with no such warnings. Why do i see those norton error messages only when apache is down with 503, and when apache is down with 503 how come the http requests always get redirected to some suspicious websites and nothing gets logged in apache error log?

I think my server is being attacked causing http to get unresponsive and thereafter http requests to my server are redirected to some malicious website, is this correct?

Also, i suspect this is a php script exploit as some customers have reported that google have blocked their website due to security reasons, i found <iframe> tage inserted in some php pages which i fixed.

Also, another thinh i noticed;
when apache responds with the 503 it is referencing PHP 5.1.4 in the header response:

[root@]# curl -I xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (my server ip)
HTTP/1.0 503 Service Unavailable
Server: Apache
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.1.4
Retry-After: 20

I am running PHP 4.3.9m why does apache responds with PHP 5.1.4 when this 503 error surfaces?

Also, since my apache was dowan with 503 error a customer mailed in today saying;
"It seems that my site www.xxxx.com is regularly down, and the winlogon virus is involved."

I suspect this is again due to the fact that http requests start getting redirected?

Setup Apache HTTP Server 2.0 To Run On Local Machine And Execute PL Scripts

I am 3 days new to figuring out how to get Perl scripts to run on my Windows XP box. I downloaded and installed the Apache installation file "httpd-2.0.65-win32-x86-openssl-0.9.8y.msi" and the "strawberry-perl-5.18.2.1-32bit.msi" from the perl.org site in hopes that I could get a feedback form to work for a web site that I am working on.

Out of the many pages that I have viewed online of how to configure the Apache Server, nothing has given any favorable results with their explanations.

My last attempt was [URL] ..... where I could not get the example to work. I did the changes to the Apache file "Edit the Apache httpd.conf Configuration File" fairly easily but I must be having problems with the test.pl because I can't get it to work.

I used a different version of Perl (Strawbery from perl.org because it installed without giving me an error pop up after installation) and after copy pasting the script, in an attempt to get it working, I ended up changing it in hopes that I could get it working, shown below.

#!/strawberry/bin/perl.exe
print "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1

";
print "<phtml>";
print "<body>";
print "Test Page";
print "</body>";
print "</html>";

This is what the site says to create the program with:

#!/perl/bin/perl
print "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1

";
print "<phtml>";
print "<body>";
print "Test Page";
print "</body>";
print "</html>";

where I assumed that "#!" meant the "C:" drive and substituted the first "/perl" with the folder the Strawbery Perl had installed itself to and left the second "/perl" in the first line thinking that it was referring to the executable in the "C:strawberryperlbin" folder.

This is the error I get when trying to get the script to run when typing "localhost/test.pl" in the address bar.

"Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
........"

Know how I can change the title of this post to read "Configuring Apache HTTP Server 2.0 to run Perl in Windows"?

Does anyone know how to redirect the URL of a host so that it always goes to the www subdomain? Is this done with RedirectMatch or is a rewrite rule?

Http Messed Up But Not Http

Mar 31, 2008

where when I view my website through http using Firefox, it never stops loading. If I use IE, then I get a "page can not be displayed" error.

If I use https then everything works fine.

I have noticed that if I delete lines from the files, I don't have this problem.

If I try viewing images (so I know it can't be an html of php problem) some look fine (the very small files). But, larger files, around 168 kb, load halfway and the second half is distorted (green and purple chunks and other random colors and lines).

If I view the image through https, the image is perfectly fine!

If I put my site through w3.org's validator (just to see what it would report) it says "500 Line too long (limit is 4096)".

My website used to work, so I know there isn't any code in the pages that would cause this to happen.

Is there an Apache setting I check? Perhaps it is sending a really long header that I can not see? I am not really sure what to do. I have made my site to force https but it's slow and not signed.

Litespeed

Mar 31, 2009

In a 2 X Quad Xeon server with 16GB RAM and 2 X 500GB on DirectAdmin.

IOwait is less than 10% most of the times.

So litespeed told me to go with a 2 CPU core license.

1. So since i going with 2 CPU core license. It will only make 2 cores user litespeed for PHP out of 8 cores? what other cores gonna do? only static content? Or other cores gonna use Apache for php? can you plz explain.

2. Do we have to configure cache like mod_cache, mod_disk_cache, and mod_mem_cache etc with litespeed too? Or it has its own methods of caching?

3. Should use their PHP LiteSpeed SAPI over normal PHP?
Is there any compatibility problems with scripts like Vbulletin, jamroom?
