How To Prevent Email To Root Account

Feb 27, 2008

I'm running a webosting server under linux with sendmail as mailserver.

The problem is that many spammers send mails directly to the root account by using one of the existing pseudo accounts like "apache, uucp, root, ...". In a default sendmail installation, apache, uucp, root are defined as alias and point to root. I do virtualhosting so I accept mail for several domains. If a spammer send mail to root@anotherdomain.com, the spam will also arrive in the root account. If I define a bounce all for my main domain, I have problems because root@mymaindomain.com and apache@mymaindomain.com do not exist anymore. This results in user unkown when apache or root try to send a mail out.

So, how do I prevent spammers from sending mail directly to the root account? Is it possible to accept only local mail to the root account?

All CPanel & Email Passwords Changed PLUS Root

May 10, 2008

I got up today, went to check my emails and received invalid passwords on all my email accounts. I then went to check in the CPanels and get the same error when I try to login.

Then I try the root and same thing!

BUT all my linked FTP accounts work and the sites are online and working. One is giving a 500 error (cgi program) but besides that, they are all online w/ no changes.

My "host want to do a OS reinstall and let me try and restore my sites from a slave drive. I think thats stupid and shouldnt be needed.

They also automatically say I was hacked...Sure a hacker changed all the cpanel and email passwords but worked it so the linked FTP accounts would work and didnt take any sites offline.

Are Chained Root Ssl Certificates More Secure Than Single Root?

Nov 25, 2008

I have read that although chained root ssl certificates can be more difficult to install they are actually more secure since the root certificate cannot be compromised, only the intermediary.

Is this true? It looks like both google and amazon both use chained SGC certs.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Not Able To Send Email To Another Email On Same VPS With External MX Record

May 28, 2015

I'm having difficulty sending an email to another email address (with a different domain) which is on the same VPS.The trouble is, on the other domain's VPS control panel, within the DNS settings, the MX records have been pointed externally (to an exchange server). Their email is turned off. But bizarrely, their mailbox is full.

It seems as though Plesk is ignoring the MX records, and sending MY email internally to the OTHER domain's mailbox on the same VPS.How do I get Plesk to send my mail to the correct EXTERNAL MX records?

Free Email - Lot Of Space And Email Boxes Involved

Feb 13, 2007

One of my customers asked me if is possible technically to offer free email services.

Since he's going to launch a big portal he want to offer such things later, for all users.

Now, there are problems as:
a) if there is any possibility to compress emails similar with GMAIL or YahooMail or so, because i can't imagine the email is uncompressed

b) how can be handled email boxes over multiple (mail ?) servers if the HDD space needed would be larger than for one server HDD ?

FTP As Root

Jul 13, 2008

I just recently had someone from this forum install CentOS for me with ISPconfig and required modules to successfully run PHPmotion. However, the only FTP I can access are the ones I create FTP for in ISPconfig, such as web1_admin, web1_testuser, etc.

When installing a CentOS server with ISPconfig, isn't there a root to log into the FTP?

With the FTP accounts that I have, I cannot access public and home directory such as /var/www directories.

Is there suppose to be an account for FTP so I can succcessfully overlook the whole server?

I want to take a look at all the websites I have such as /var/www/www.test1.com, /var/www/www.test2.com, etc. all through FTP. However, I cannot do this. It's almost like I have no Admin power over my server.

He did not provide me with a root FTP account or any super admin FTP account. I am not sure if something suspicious is going on or not. Please help. I do not want to get hacked in and stolen files.

Email Issue: Local Users Can Not Email Each Other

Oct 27, 2009

I am having an email issue and I can not resolve. I am hoping for some assisstance here.

One of my local clients are not able to email each other in their office. (About 10 employess I believe)

They are using Outlook mail client, and using ISP's SMTP server. They are able to send/recieve email to other users externally, but not intenally.

Using webmail works perfectly fine.

I spoke with my host and the said everything is working fine. I checked with the ISP to see if they are blocking the IP address on the SMTP server. They said they were not.

I have a personal account on the same server and tried to send email to another local email account, and it did not work either. Tried to send email to my clients email and they did not recieve anything.

I am on the same ISP as my client, so Im still not sure if its the ISP or not.

Email Piping Returns A Bounced Email

May 19, 2007

I setup mail piping with Exim so that e-mails sent to a specific account be forwarded to my PHP script. It's not working properly, because when I send a mail to this account, it's bounced by the mailer daemon:

Code:
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

pipe to |/home/user/public_html/support/parse.php
generated by support@mydomain.com
local delivery failed
In my /etc/valiases/domain.com file I have:

Code:
support@mydomain.com: "|/home/user/public_html/support/parse.php"
*: :blackhole:

What can be causing the error?

Root Domain

May 20, 2009

I have a server that I have a few domains on, and I have a question about the root domain. I initially picked any old domain, so now all of my name servers are pointing to this one random domain. I have since purchased a few more premium domains, and am wondering if I should change the nameservers to be the more premium domains? Does this matter? Should I have my "main site" be the root domain? Just trying to understand what the implications could be for me.

"Auto"

My computer's HDD crashed last night and I only have an old backup.

The problem is my new server's root password was stored there and it's 20 digits totally random password.

Is there any way to reset the server password by the dedicated server provider?

I haven't asked my provider yet.
