thinking about adding web hosting to my reseller account. Can anyone tell me the difference between an IP address and a domain. If they are different who actually owns the domain and who owns the IP address?

IP Address Vs. Domain Name
I'm moving from shared to dedicated hosting. I've added an account and used ftp and phpmyadmin to copy over a WordPress installation. I would like to test this installation before re-directing the name servers, but I'm having no luck. If I browse to 12.34.567.890/whm, I get the Web Host Manager. If I browse to 12.34.567.890, I get the "Great Success! Apache is working on your cPanel and WHM server" page. If I browse to /anything_else, (e.g., /wp-admin, /index.php, etc.) I get a 404 message. Is there any way I can test this application (and others) using the IP address, or am I going to have to change the DNS and navigate to mydomain.com?

I have a website and i wanted to change the homepage for it. I had this in my .htaccess file: redirect index.php [url] Now, i installed wordpress and i changed the line in .htaccess file to: redirect index.php [url] And all of a sudden the domain name on the homepage is converting into the IP address. To try click this link [url]and you will see it converts into a IP. But if i click the "forum" link ( existed from old site) it starts working fine. I have reverse DNS entries setup and everything was working fine until this change,

DDoS The IP Address But Not Domain
I checked on /server-status and it has tons of ClientVHostRequest {serverip } defaultGET / HTTP/1.0 However, the default web page is blank. Now my site has been DDoSed for the last 3 days. Does this mean they are attacking the site from the IP, because I do see many genuine access to the correct Vhost but no body should access the site via the IP. Especially... why is the client, my on server ip that accesses?

Can Your Hosting Address Be Seen When You Forward A Domain?
For example, if I forward my business domain abcproducts.com to my domain where I have my hosting, myname.com, is it possible for people to see where my business domain is forwarding to. Basically, I am doing a business website, but I don't want anyone to be able to see that it actually is forwarding to a folder on my main myname.com where I have my hosting. I am masking it, so it will only show abcproducts.com, but I am wondering if even the "tech saavy" has tools to figure this out. I just don't want anyone to be able to see this. Like, I know how sites like DNSreport.com show all kinds of stuff on the domain. Is there something like this that people can use to see if domains forward?

Registering Domain, Which IP Address Should I Provide
I want to register a domain from some organization. During the registration the registrar asks me to provide a primary DNS with an IP address and a secondary DNS with an IP address. Because I have already a website with a godaddy hosting, I want that may new domain also points to my godaddy hosting. So I have to provide the DNS of my godaddy hosting to the domain registration company. But my question is; Which IP address do they require? Do they ask me the IP address of my DNS’s (NS43.DOMAINCONTROL.COM, NS44.DOMAINCONTROL.COM) or the IP address of the server on which my website is running.

Change Domain To Another Ip Address On My Server
i have a dedicated server with 5 usable IP's in range xxx.242 to xxx.246 xx.xxx.120.242 <-- main shared IP xx.xxx.120.243 xx.xxx.120.244 <-- in use by my nameservers xx.xxx.120.245 <-- in use by my nameservers xx.xxx.120.246 When i select in WHM "Change Site's IP Address " and the account i want to change it shows me a drop down menu with the ip's of the nameservers AND the xx.xxx.120.243 If i select that one the domain in the account shows the apache default page only inmediately. I don't know why the xx.xxx.120.246 ip doesn't show or why the nameserver ip's appear because they are in use. Do i need to wait for propagation or is this an error?

How Do I Redirect Visitors, Who Type In My IP Address, To My Domain
I have what seems to be a simple redirect question. I have a dedicated server and a few static IP addresses, but I want to make it so if someone were to type in my IP address in their browser, Apache will redirect them to the domain name. (Typing in [url] What happens now is that if you were to type in my server's IP address, it will show you the FIRST VirtualHost container that's listed in httpd.conf. This is not so bad since I've placed my main company site at the start of the list, but I'd rather redirect the IP into the domain name I use. I read somewhere that you can place Mod RewriteRules directly in the VirtualHost container rather than using .htaccess, but the few "rules" that I tried didn't seem to do anything. And yes, I restarted Apache each time I edited httpd.conf. Is there an easy way to do this? ALSO, is there a way to redirect the name server address too? If you type in [url]into the browser, it acts the same way. I would ultimately like to redirect both the nameservers and the IP address(es) to the domain name.

Web Hosting Domain
I just got hosting with a company called Netfirms (netfirms.com), and I gave it my domain name(destinyislands.com) that I purchased from godaddy. However, destinyislands.com will not redirect to the actual pages that I have uploaded to netfirms. The only page that will work is destinyislands.netfirms.com(a crappy subdomain). I just signed up about 30 minutes ago, so maybe I need to wait for the domain to register into the system, but I feel like I got ripped off. Anybody have any idea of if I just need to wait, and then the regular domain will work?

Domain Not Working Via Web
The domain is not showing up via web, but works via ftp oddly. I deleted / re-added the dns zone and it still shows up "no record found" in dnsreport.com I found the dns line in var cpanel user file commented out, uncommented it and made it dns= (instead of dns=1). I ran updateuserdomains, restarted cpanel and dns zone still does not show up in dnsreport, nor the web working The httpd.conf virtual portion matches fine with the dns zone as well. Now after uncommenting the dns line in the user file, it shows up in whm but still does not work via web. I confirmed these are correct / listed: userdomains (no, I added it, ran updateuserdomains, it disappeared from that file) /var/cpanel/users/userfile (correct dns=, etc) httpd.conf (correct) sync'd zone to all clustered servers (ok) ran updateuserdomains numerous times restarted cpanel listed in /var/named/domain.com.db localdomains (ok)

I can't seem to figure out how to get my e-mail set up that is on a different server. I really need to get my e-mail going because it's very important. I think this has something to do with updating the MX records and some other stuff but I have no idea how to do it through my registrars control panel that they have. I registered it through Go Daddy.

Clarification Regarding Web Host, Domain Name
I had just sat down to click on the "buy now" button of a web host service provider when I just had a few more doubts. I am faced with a few queries like the domain name I need to buy. At the moment, I have not made a proper site for anyone. I am experimenting with a few example sites only. One of my good friends, who is a cricket coach told me that he needs to modify his site. He told me that I can use his site to experiment and learn. So I am now trying to make a site using his images, header etc but with a few modifications. His site contains a home page, a contact page, an image gallery and also a registration page where he wants the students to give their details like name, age, school and submit the details. Now, I have just managed to have a home page, a contact page and a plain gallery page with a few images. I also made a registration page where the student can submit the details. But I have not been able to test the form on my page to see if it works. Now this is what I want. I do not have a site of my own now. But I need to have a web host who will give me php support so that I can test whatever page I make. When I am satisfied that I can venture out and make a website for somebody, I intend to start offering my services to my friends (for a nominal fee or even for free if it is going to help me to learn. I do not want to take money for a sloppy site or take my friends for a ride. I want to be able to offer quality service for whatever I charge). My question now is this. When I need to register for a domain name, is it a good idea to just have a domain name like www.jppp.com ( if it is available or a similar name). Then can I try out the various pages that I make on this site? Once I get my domain name, I need to download a ftp client in order to upload my files, isn't it? Once I am a little confident and offer my services to a client, I make a site on my PC with all the files required. Then do I upload the files to my own domain name to show it to the client for his approval? Or should I have a domain name of my client's choice and then upload it there before making any changes that he wants? One more question. In my gallery page, I have a few thumbnail images which shows a larger version on hover. Now I can upload the pages which my friend has provided me. But my friend will have many images which he needs to be able to upload himself instead of having to depend on me? I know that I need to use PHP for this. But I do not know the exact method. Can I be shown the way or directed to a tutorial? Will I have to let my client know that the size of the images should not exceed a certain limit? Being a layman, he will not know how to resize images which I can easly do in photoshop, isn't it? What if his images are too many and exceed the amount of webspace that I have?

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal. We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP. The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401. Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please. I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews. I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts? I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Sending Email To Another Server When The Email Address Domain Is On This Server
I currently have a domain on Server 1 (Linux, Apache, Ubuntu, Matrix control panel). This server does not have any spam filter, so I have moved all the email accounts to Server 2 (Linux, Apache, Fedora Core, Plesk) which does have a brilliant spam filter; and have changed the DNS record for mail.domain.com to the IP address for Server 2. Emails are being successfully received on Server 2. On Server 1, when an email is sent through SMTP to an address at that domain, it does not send it to Server 2, it gets delivered to the hosting account for the domain on Server 1. So what I am guessing is happening is that Server 1 detects the domain has an account on the server, and instead of looking up the DNS info for that domain, just assumes it is on Server 1. What I need to do, is force Server 1 to send email for that domain to Server 2. Is this possible, and if so, how can it be achieved? If more info about the server is required for a solution please let me know and I'll provide what I can.

To Find Web Host For Personal Web Site
This is my first attempt at using a web hosting company. I currently use a free service from my ISP that gives me 25 MB of space for a personal web site. After only a few weeks, I have exceeded that limit and now find myself needing much more. My personal website will contain information of a bowling league that my friends and I belong to. I plan to have many pages of data from an Excel spreadsheet included, either in a database format, or just plain html. I also plan to have several family photos and some video on my web site. I will be adding pages on a weekly basis. I did some research and I felt I needed something like 25G of storage for all my pages containing tables and photos. Since I am not using it for business purposes, I am looking for something very basic, if that is possible. If anyone knows a decent host that can accomodate my needs, which is simple, but requiring a lot of space, please share your recommendations. My budget is between $5 to $10 per month.

Reverse Domain Name Server (DNS) ARPA For Domain On VPS

What about if i host my nameservers offsite, but then have my webserver/mailserver etc inside the datacenter? Would i need to request the datacenter where the nameservers are hosted to add the reverse ip entries for the domain, and then the request the same from the datacenter for my web/mail servers to add the reverse entries? Is it really required?

32 Or 64bit & Existing Domain Net Vs New Domain

Got two questions as I think about setup. 1) 32 bit or 64bit? 2) Regarding host names and server assignemt...I can either assign it as a node to a domain hosted elsewhere in a reseller account, or I can start with a completely unused domain which is currently parked. Any preference, in an ideal world? (I have absolutely no preference, but it occurrred to me it may or may not be of consequence, perfomance & IT-wise and generally speaking .. all things being equal, of course.) Like I said, a newbie. So I'm braced for the if-you-have-to-ask, you-shouldn't-be-in-one" musings for these rather basic boneheaders.

Looking For Web Hosting For A Web Game
First I would like to start by explaining my past and current situation. When I was in High School I created a web game called Jinopets.com that was intended for me to learn how to Code PHP and to create things with a couple of friends. However, within 3 days the game exploded and receiving large amounts of hits and users by nothing but word of mouth. Before I knew what to do, my host said the price of my next month was going to go up from $5 to $50, and at the time I knew nothing about web hosting and was making (barely) enough money from Google Ad-sense so I gladly paid them to continue working on the game. As the site got larger, the host continued to ask for large amounts of money until I could no longer afford the game because the host was kicking me off of his hosting because I was simply taking up too much of his space. (I was going to link my daily usage data here, but apparently I have to post 5 times first to add links.) Now, there is more. I am NOT hosting the same game, but I am expecting similar numbers just increased a bit higher with a few differences. This game extensively uses PHP GD Image Functions to generate images for characters and map data. So I expect the server load to be much higher. But PHP GD Image Functions must be on the server, Which I do not anticipate to be a problem. What is the recommended solution for web hosting? I live in a fairly remote area and could not host my own server, but I am afraid of being removed from a hosting plan again after what happened last time.

Unknown Company "Easy Web Hosting" Taking Over My Web Sites
I just received two e-mails which may be some new kind of phishing scam. Full text at bottom. The message describes the beginnings of a "site upgrade" for my web sites, but it's not from the company that does my hosting. I received this for two sites that I have hosted with EZpublishing. I'm having terrible problems with EZpublishing; they lost most of my databases last Friday, have failed to respond to a trouble ticket, and phone calls divert to an answering service. I've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They may be going out of business and selling their remaining customers to another provider. So a message regarding migration to another host isn't unexpected. But the message below looks phony. First, they know what my domains are, but they don't apparently have access to any of my customer account information. Second, "easywebpublishing.com" doesn't have a live web site at it, just a sort of "coming soon" page. The WHOIS info for the domain shows ownership by "Internet Names for Business". "megawebservers.com", from which the email originated, is sort of a skeletal web site that looks like a hosting provider, but doesn't have any real info. "megawebhosting.com" WHOIS info shows "Moniker Privacy Services", which usually indicates a bottom-feeder if not a scam. Anyone else see anything like this? .....

Domain.com Works, But Www.domain.com Doesn't
One of my websites, romeo-help4u.com has this problem. When i type and the address goes to [url]it works fine. But when I go to [url]it doesn't work. Quote: Great Success ! Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server If you can see this page, then the people who manage this server have installed cPanel and WebHost Manager (WHM) which use the Apache Web server software and the Apache Interface to OpenSSL (mod_ssl) successfully. They now have to add content to this directory and replace this placeholder page, or else point the server at their real content. ATTENTION! If you are seeing this page instead of the site you expected, please contact the administrator of the site involved. (Try sending an email to <webmaster@domain>.) Although this site is running cPanel, WebHost Manager, and Apache software it almost certainly has no other connection to cPanel Inc. or the Apache Group. Please do not send mail about this site or its contents to cPanel Inc. or the Apache Group. About cPanel: cPanel is a leading provider of software for the webhosting industry. If you would like to learn more about cPanel please visit our website at www.cpanel.net. Please be advised that cPanel Inc. is not a web hosting company, and as such has no control over content found elsewhere on this site. About Apache HTTP Server: The Apache HTTP Server is an open source web server which powers many of the worlds web sites. The Apache HTTP server is part of the Apache Group's many influential projects. Their efforts have helped shape much the world wide web, and they continue to be a dominating force in the web hosting industry. I checked the dns through whm and everything looks normal. What did I set up wrong?
