Disabling "named" To Save Ram, Bad Idea
Mar 24, 2007I've got a 256mb cpanel vps and since I use enom's dns for all the domains going to the server, could I actually disable named (Berkely Name Server Daemon BIND) and get back 64mb ?

I want to understand the Idea of DDOSING
If I have a server with a a gb /second port so no one can DDOS me ?
or if the hacker have a servers with a gb/ port he can destroy any thing ?
second question
sometimes people hjave ip tables to filter all the packets to the server these people some times go down for ddosing too WHY ? why the IP tables cant filter the packets of this type of DDOSING?
I don't have raid in my dedicated box as it's usually way more expensive. Instead I have two drives. I use one for OS/data and one for backups. I do nightly backups to the disk. I also do 3 weekly off site backups to my home server. So as far as backups I'm safe.
Now the issue is if the disk fails then my server is down. Do lot of people take this risk in order to save money? (often 50-100 per month)
In people's experiences, how long does it typically take for a data center to put in a new drive and load the OS?
In a 3+ disk server I'd use software raid for the data but the OS would still be alone.
Do lot of people do this?
With 10 servers, that's a lot of money saved for a small enough risk.
I am considering signing up for a very well-received host on this site and around the net. It is DowntownHost. They have a promotion right now where you can get 25% off for life. They have tiered plans. So you if you pay for 1, 2 or 3 years upfront, for example, you will be paying *a lot* less per month than if you paid just monthly. Add in this 25% off promotion, and you can see some big savings.
Now, for most hosts that you haven't tried, I would say no way commit your money for a year. But DowntownHost's reputation precedes them so well, this could be an exception.
Plus, they have a 90-day money back guarantee where you would get all your money back if you don't like the service.
So my thinking is that I should no whether or not I am going to stick with a host within 90 days. That is plenty of time. But, then again, your money is tied up for 1, 2 or 3 years after that 90 days, and if something goes wrong, you are up a creek without a paddle. Plus, I have heard (in general, not with DowntownHost specifically), that your support level could decrease after your trial period if you have paid for an extended plan because, well, they have your money, so what do they care.
What are people's opinion on this?
I'm interested in creating a small website exposing the biggest overselling companies, and how their overselling practices are false marketing.
Simply put, I want to benchmark each host with exact tests for accuracy. Any idea how I can fairly test each host, e.g. benchmark?
After the tests have been performed, I will explain which are the worst hosts (e.g. the first to give me the boot due to some TOS clause, e.g. cpu usage), etc.
Also, would anyone like to help out with this project? I'll be putting some nice marketing into it.
I was just working on some concepts for image upload security features and wanted some others opinions. Would the below be worth doing to not have to deal with the 777 or even 775 phpsu issue(s)?
- What about loading the images into a db and logging the upload. Then having a cron or a daemon move the file to a location under the owner (user) and then delete the file out of the db.
Pros:
- Images would be loaded and displayed from under the user of the site making no 777 issues.
Con:
- Mass use of db could cause crashes?
- Would have to write front end to know if the file was in db or in the folder location
telling me about your offerings, or trying to convince me about out of area datacenters because of the risk of terrorism, cost, or alien invasion, I'm not seriously shopping around, just doing a bit of initial research.
With that disclaimer, what's a rough expectation of pricing for a NYC, carrier neutral datacenter for 1 cabinet with 60 amps of 110v? Preferrably somewhere that Internap is available.
As root I can't save any changes inside my.cnf. Allways getting this error:
Could not open file for writing: Permission denied
I checked file permissions twice - everything seems to be normal.
In my dedicated server I have MS SQL 2005 Server whose backup is scheduled at night 2:00 am through Management Console. Now, once the backup is over I wish compress it and give the current date as the name to the compressed file.
I had tried to do it using PK Zip server but was not successful in doing so. Can any body help me in accomplishing this.
I grepped an IP address on a domain log and it showed thousands of lines. How do I save this grep result to a txt file so I can send it to someone?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy site is going down lot of times due to high cpu quota and when i check cpu exceeded logs i could see some ip addresses trying to open non existenet permalinks i.e. my site is smartdesis.com and they try to open smartdesis.com/xxx which gives a 404 error which is causinf high cpu usage. Repetedly they are trying to open differnt urls by appending /xxx to them, i banned nearly 100 ips but they seem to be growing.

I switched from Resellerzoom to wiredtree with a vps. I also have accounts with liquidweb and softlayer. All are reliable and uptimenot an issue but as far as getting help Wiredtree is just far above.
I have been there now only a few months but so far so good. If your not a real tech person wiredtree is your best bet. ANd the email response time wow!! I tried to call them once but by time I picked up the phone and waiting on hold for about 2 minutes my email was already responded to.
I am sure there are thousands of good host out there but I know on this boards when i looked no one would tell me whichto go with , they all said it depends on this and that. What I am saying is if your looking for a good VPS and your not a technical person go with Wiredtree save yourself the headache I had with others that are great host but just not ready to deal with us stupid people who dont know how to "harden" a server .

Display some text in a web browser from a file called text.txt
text.txt will have many lines and some of them I do not want users to be able to modify and overwrite.
config_item_1=user can edit
config_item_2=user should see but not edit (could be on any line)
config_item_3=user can edit
config_item_4=user can edit
The user has made their changes in the web browser and clicks submit. I then need this info to be saved as the text.txt file however some checking needs to be done first. Anything matching config_item_2 should be removed. This could be on any line. Anything not matching should be permitted and added.
i use the following perl script(created by me) to save server load every 30 minutes to a log file i just keep it running in the background(probably would be more effective using cron)
#!/usr/bin/perl
while(1) {
$w = `w`;
#print $w;
$w =~ /load average: (.+)
/;
$log = $1;
my ($sec, $min, $hour, $mday, $mon, $year) = localtime;
my $rightnow = sprintf("%04d-%02d-%02d %02d:%02d:%02d ", $year + 1900, $mon + 1, $mday, $hour, $min, $sec);
$log = $rightnow . ": " . $log ."
";
open (OUTFILE, ">>top_logfile.txt");
print OUTFILE "$log
";
close (OUTFILE);
#sleep for 30 minutes
sleep(1800);
}

Save Web Hosting Settings takes a long time. The Domains (Apache Server) are not reachable for 36 seconds.
I want to save the access logs of our websites on an external server. If I do this now with the default setup, the gets overwritten every day. The desired file name format whould be: websitedomain-tld-access-2014-10-24.log
How can I tell Plesk to do this and how can I make sure the statistics keep working?
On our other servers we use rotatelogs for this.
If I try to download a plesk backup to my local machine it saves a file a few bytes in size in .xml.tar.html format
My other non plesk 12 machines correctly save the file in .tar format ....
I want to disable the use of other dns being used instead of my name servers is this possible if so how can i do this.

Disabling POP and IMAP on cPanel
We're using Google Apps to handle all e-mail for the domain, so we have no need for POP and IMAP services running on our server (and I'm always getting e-mails from LFD that show bots are trying to connect with random passwords and such) so I want to disable them, but keep SMTP active since some scripts running on our server use it and I don't feel like rewriting them right now.
I unchecked IMAP and POP in the WHM service manager to disable them, but it's still enabled and I'm able to connect and everything. How can I completely disable these 2 services?
I have a website which has a FLV player serving .flv files which are hosted in the server. I notice that some users are directly downloading the files using the direct URL and they seem to be using download managers for that which is opening several Apache connections and open slows down Apache. I want to prevent this. I thought of preventing it using a .htaccess file but did not help. This is what I used:
<Files *>
order allow,deny
allow from 127.0.0.1
allow from localhost
deny from all
</Files>
I thought this would work but it doesn't as it is blocking the FLV player from playing the file. Can anyone tell me the right way to do it?
