View 14 RepliesI am not a technical person but am a sole business owner trying to muddle through this. Your help is much appreciated.
I want to combine my www with non www site via a 301 permanent redirect. My goal is to combine my page links in hopes that one day Google will increase my page ranking (which is sadly at 1). I don't think that combining them now (about 100 links each) will do anything to my PR but I do want it set up properly now so it's all set.
I have been reading all over the Internet on how to do this and working with my site host: Go Daddy. It's been a struggle but I believe that because I'm on a shared Windows server, there is not a solution for me to do this. If I was on a dedicated server I could do it through IIS but that option is not available for those on a shared server.
A posting I read from someone else who is also on Go Daddy (on another site) said he went and transferred his site from Windows to Linux and then was able to do the 301 redirect.
I don't understand what Windows, Linux, Apache, etc. means. My site is very simple: advertisingspark dot com. Can I transfer to Linux? Should I transfer to Linux or Apache?
Is this going to be too complicated for me? Or should I have someone else host my site? My annual fee is due in about a month so it's a good time for me to switch if I should.
I don't know if it is relevant but I had a website designer create my site and then I edit it myself in a cheap editing tool. I know basic HTML (I'm sure my designer is cringing!) If I switch to Linux or Apache, can I no longer work in html files?
Having made a switch from a Windows server to Linux to use Wordpress with better results, many external links are now pointing to invalid files because of case sensitivity.
Anyone know a formula e.g. (mod spelling & how to apply it) that can make it case insensitive?
If not, is there any harm in leaving two copies of each file e.g. cognitive-therapy and Cogntive-Therapy?
Can I run both Windows & Linux on a dedicated server? I currently have a website hosted on a shared hosting Linux web server (uses PHP, MySQL). I want to use RED5, which seems a bit tricky to set up.
Why Windows?
I would feel more comfortable installing RED5 on a windows server (I think it'd be easier for me, no experience with Linux command line etc.).
Why Linux?
I'd prefer to keep the existing PHP/MySQL website on Linux because I have Apache specific settings.
I currently have a dedicated server with beachcomber.net and have had a great experience. But I found a promo from myinternetservices.com that may end up as close to 50% off my current price with similar specs. What experiences have people had with either company for dedicated servers? Mainly I'm asking about MyIS since I've already experienced Beachcomber. Does it compare? Which one is better, etc.?

Just in the process of upgrading to new box Plesk 12 (Ubuntu 14.04LTS). ON the previous (plesk 10) I was able to disable ftp services by editing /etc/xinetd.d/ftp_psa - this doesn't seem to be an option now. How to do this on plesk 12?

But after waiting 20 minutes, the browser never loaded and the two proceses remain. So I killed both processes and removed /tmp/psa-installer.lock and started again. The same thing happened.
Is there a way to fix this? If not, is there an easy way to switch MTAs from the command line?

What's the simplest way to switch over to phpsuexec on a cpanel box, a smooth transition for all domains hosted? Basically, after I complile apqache (via whm preferrably) with phpsuexec and the current (php 5 / apache 2.2) do I need to do anything else, run any commands? I did this in the past, but cannot remember the exact steps.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi would like to move few clients from my old linux VPS that runs on Cpanel .. to my new windows VPS tat runs Plesk .. you see there were several attempts by new provider .. they cant guarantee that accounts can be fully migrated even manually they only copied site files to new server .. the client account's still running on linux vps cpanel, they are intact .. clients dont have any php or mysql files they are just plain HTML and Flash files .. i can move site files .. im concerned about mail accounts and emails that already in my clients inbox (they are using IMAP accounts) .. do you guys know any guideline or step by step how to migrate my clients
P.S. please consider me as an uneducated person .. my background is designing not programming or network administration.
Just an open-ended question that's been bugging me lately. As the industry moves to a more automated approach, I was wondering if cPanel users would likely move to another CP if it was fully automated (including the migration).
Either a custom solution or H-Sphere, if it meant you had one login for all of your services/no need to contact support for anything except actual problems.
Best platform for IMAP mail (Cpanel, Plesk Linux or Plesk Windows)
I need to setup 5 email accounts on my domain, each will use IMAP and store messages on server, so total space taken by each account will be 2-5 GB.
I have decided to go with eurovps.com as I'm close to them and ping is fast.
What is the best solution for IMAP and large email accounts: Linux Cpanel, Linux Plesk or Windows Plesk?
Each account will be accessed by 2 people differently by Thunderbird and occasionally by webmail, so nice webmail is a plus.
I have an account that is going from a shared hosting account to a dedicated with theplanet and I want to transfer it. Concerns I have is that the site is using an SSL. What things do I need to watch out for when transferring. Since I don't have root access I will have to do this transfer with the account function, correct?
This site has a database and SSL, so I thought it would hopefully be easier to use the cpanel account migration tool
windows hosting that allows me to use Remote Desktop Connection. I have been using windows vps of vpsland (which always crashed) and gate's vps plans for the purpose.
Gate's vps worked well for me but support staff is usually very hard to find.
if i buy a simple windows dedicated server (without any control panel and extra features), I'll be able to connect to the server and use Remote Desktop Connection?
I do not have bigger requiremnents. anything over 25g space/500g data transfer will work fine for me. All I need is a Remote Desktop Connection.
I am planning to move my hosting from SHARED to either VPS / Dedicated / Cloud Hosting(MOSSO) .
I am quite confused because:
1. I tried lunarpages VPS, they dont offer multiple MSSQL DB. THey offer only 1 and LIMITED to 1 GB.
2. Dedicated from lunarpages also has some limitations.
3. I heard something called as "cloud hosting" from mosso - Cloud sites, Cloud Files, Cloud servers.. I really dont understand what it means..
Can you please help?
I NEED:
1. Windows hosting - ASP, unlimited MSSQL DB and atleast 10GB space. The site will have atleast 100K visitors / month.
Looking for a windows dedicated server. At least dual core, 2gigs of ram, 10mb unmetered preferably and os xp/2003.
Content is racy, but not illegal. So need a host that can deal with that also.
is Cloud Windows VPS the same as a Load Balanced Windows VPS?
Basically, looking for redundancy and UK based solutions. Does anyone have any reviews for established companies offering the above?
I've been asked to source a good Windows Server.
Must be able to source Graphon's Go-Global software (Graphon dot com/content/view/9/9/ )
Should be UK based if possible and allow us access to install the software.
A firewall will run me another $100. Is it worth it? Do any of you run a Windows server w/o a firewall.

Anyway, I need ideally 1000-1500gb bandwidth on 10mbs connection, ram&cpu is not important as they're very simple things but requires a lot of bandwidth. Location in Europe or USA, but whatever is cheaper...
Budget is anything upto £60/$120 a month.
