I am using linux dedicated servers, but I want to move over to Windows for some stuff I run...
Anyway, I need ideally 1000-1500gb bandwidth on 10mbs connection, ram&cpu is not important as they're very simple things but requires a lot of bandwidth. Location in Europe or USA, but whatever is cheaper...
So I need to build or buy a server to run my site. The site will use a basic LAMP setup and we will also be allowing for file uploads and downloads. File sizes aren't expected to be too large, mostly word/PDF documents and maybe some Powerpoint presentations. At the moment we can only afford one box to run the whole site so we need to build something that can handle both file serving and basic site stuff.
I'm wondering what kinds of hardware we would need to make this happen. If I were to setup a box with a quad core CPU, 4-8GB of RAM, and a few 15K RPM drives would that be able to handle file serving and PHP/mySQL? Would multiple processors be required? What about RAID?
I guess the real question is what kind of hardware requirements are involved with setting up a file server. I'm guessing running PHP and mySQL is not really an issue but I don't want the site to slow down because of the file serving. I'm sure some of you have experience with this sort of thing so if anyone knows please let share your thoughts.
I have Plesk 11.5 (service provider mode) on a Windows 2008 server IIS7.Most of my sites are developed in .asp and therefore i use a custom 500-100.asp error page that check s the IP of the visitor then displays either a friendly error, or if its my IP a full error of what has happened (it also emails me the error). This allows me to debug pages easily whilst developing and to keep an eye on anyone trying SQL Injection hacks on my sites (as the error and email also have session variables and IP address).I dont have root access to the server as it is a Webfusion dedicated server.I have following the Plesk documentation -
1) Switch on custom errors for the subscription 2) Look in virtual directories and navigate to error documents 3) Find the error in question (500:100) and change it to point at either a file or URL
FILE - I had the data centre add in the 500-100.asp error page in to the virtual template so that my page is available in the list of virtual files - this didn't work but that maybe because its not a static page??
URL - when i add the path it says its incorrect, if i add a fully qualified address, it accepts it but it doesn't work.give me a specific example of the URL that can be entered relative to the root as the format in the documentation isn't accepted. The last step is to restart IIS which is also an issue as i cant seem to do this from the Plesk panel..It is as if it isn't catching the 500:100 error, and only catching the general 500 error??
We've always used open source linux servers up until now. For a variety of reasons we're contemplating adding one windows box.
Is there much practical difference for the average small business between 2003 and 2008?
What's the difference between "authenticated" and "unauthenticated" windows servers?
How is most administration and regular tasks done? I'm used to sshing into my linux servers-- I'm assuming for windows this is gui based? What's the standard software used for this?
Can I run both Windows & Linux on a dedicated server? I currently have a website hosted on a shared hosting Linux web server (uses PHP, MySQL). I want to use RED5, which seems a bit tricky to set up.
Why Windows?
I would feel more comfortable installing RED5 on a windows server (I think it'd be easier for me, no experience with Linux command line etc.).
Why Linux?
I'd prefer to keep the existing PHP/MySQL website on Linux because I have Apache specific settings.
I own a hosting company Perix Host. We are looking into moving into gaming server hosting.
To do this i need a dedicated server with Windows because the main gaming server we want to run (LFS) only works with Windows if you want your customer to be able to upload there custom wrote plugins. So my issue is i need a dedicated server. What do i get.
How much bandwidth would i need to host around 20 servers all running with 15 people on them. Im not sure of how much bandwidth the game uses but i could find it if anyone needs it.
I am a good systems administrator but I have never setup a windows web server. Are there any tutorials out on the web that would show me how to do it. Is it true when a dedicated server is purchased the only thing I have to do is transfer the htm or asp files?
if it's possible to have unlimited RDP(Remote Desktop Profiles) on a Windows Server 2003/2008 or a number that is around low xx. If so what companies offers this service?
Is it actually possible to find Windows dedicated server with unlimited traffic (1Gb Pipe)and reliable 24/7 technical support? Cause I have searched and found out that if the traffic is unlimited the pipe is too small, and if the pipe is big enough traffic is limited and additional one costs a fortune.
I'm starting a multi-gaming organization and I'm hoping to run 3-4 servers at 1000FPS. The server i purchased is a Core2Quad 2.4, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD, 100MBIT windows 2008
I also purchased a TCAdmin license and have that setup and running. I know about the windows media player trick that makes it run at 500FPS and ive been doing that. Well i would like to get it to 1000FPS but ive been unsuccessful. Ive tried some reading about HPET but i havnt seen where i can change or enable that. what i can do to make them run at 1000FPS.
Dont know if this helps but the servers im hosting are CS 1.6, CSS and TF2.
I usually host just PHP but a new client needs to use ASP and SQL Server. So I urgently need to find a UK based reliable Windows Managed Dedicated Server for around £100 to £150 per month.
The site only gets 1000 visits per week and runs a multi community from a 500MB SQL Server database.
I'm scared to go with a cheap host like 1&1 or Fasthosts but also think Rackspace may be way too expensive.
Is a dedicated server overkill for such a site?
Anyone know of a solid relaible host that can offer this with great 24/7 skilled support and daily backups.
I need to have a solution for client by Tuesday or they may go elsewhere.
We have a Fasthosts Dedicated Windows Server and I now need to run a PHP script to enable us to use a online enquiry form. I have contact Fasthosts and the are not able to advise how to enable/use these scripts as it falls outside the support package.
Does anyone know how to enable or make it work in the Matrix Control?
The error i get is:

Trying to set Default Site for a Dedicated IP Address.
I go to Subscription, then to domain > Change Hosting Settings, select dedicated IP address and OK, works fine. Site goes to Default Plesk Page.
Go to Tools & Settings, IP Addresses > Select the dedicated IP address I set above. Change Default Site to site above. Click Ok.
I get the error message above and nothing changes.
I looked on my IIS Server and MailEnable's Webmail is installed under the Default Website.
I have another Dedicated IP on this server and it has a default site on it working properly, but it was set up on the old site and it was configured as part of the Migration using Migration Manager.
I tried deleting the IP address and adding it back in. That didn't change anything. I also tried running: "%plesk_bin%websrvmng.exe" –reconfigure-webmail since that came up under someone else's issue when searching the web and that .exe is what's throwing the error.
You contact a company for a quote, however this company has not replied in days, so you contact again and it takes them a few more days to finally respond; this is a pretty common scenario.
I emailed 3 companies 3 days ago. One replied within 6 hours with a quote, and the other two still have yet to respond, guess which company I am most likely to go with?
So do you get put off by a lack of a sales team / delays? To me its like they don't want my service.
I'm planning on hosting several websites on a server or several servers in my home using Comcast(Comcast told me unlimited bandwidth would cost me $60.00 a month). I'm currently researching what used servers to buy and what operating system would be best to use on the servers(LAMP sounds interesting). Security is a big concern. I want to be able to expand this system when necessary.
What used servers and software would be a great setup for what I want to do? I program websites using XHTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT AND PHP.
how many of you guys are considering buying into a CDN service? Do you ever find yourself (or your clients) asking for it?
If so, in what specific situations would you need a CDN? Did you already buy the service - if so, what made you choose your provider, and if you did not buy the service yet, why not?
I am considering buying a C6509-E and I wanted to get a feel for that which I am about to do is hopefully a good move, and not a bad one. My traffic patterns are similar to what I suspect many of you experience. My traffic levels hovers around 2 - 300 mbit, but we are about to start offering more colocation services.
I also do internet facing bgp routing.
I was thinking something like this:
1 x C6509-E Chassis 1 x VS-S720-10G-3CXL 720 with 2 ports 10GbE MSFC3 PFC3C XL 1 x MEM-C6K-CPTFL1GB Compact Flash Memory 1GB 1 x WS-X6724-SFP 24-port GigE 1 x WS-C6509-E-FAN Fan tray 2 x WS-CAC-3000W
I will probably add on the forwarding card to the 6724 once my traffic levels rises more.
Additionally I would probably be getting one more identical box a little later.
Could I get any feedback on this setup, is there anything I've missed?
Also, if you have bought a similar setup before I would love to to be given an idea of what I should expect for pricing?
Some time ago there was this guy apaqdigital who was quite well known among WHT memembers -- but i dont see his name when i type in the user section of the advanced search.
Anyone know if "apaqdigital" is still around or has changed his user name?
Our company just outgrown our linux routers, so we're getting ready to buy a pair of 7201's. I'm one of the programmers, not the network engineer, so I'm not sure about the details. All I know is that we will buy a pair of 7201's soon.
what they go for after discounts? Resellers/vendors feel free to chime in.
