IIS Win2003 SMTP Setup
Jan 25, 2008
I have win2003 server running IIS hosting an asp website, I am wanting to use CDONTS to send emails.
I am no pro and not really sure what I am doing with setting up the server for SMTP. I have installed SMTP Virtual Server but do not know what settings I need or what else I need to setup to get it to work.
I have always used hosted space before where it is all setup for me.
How do I go about it?

I don't have any SMTP server
Its a dedicated unmanaged server that has windows 2003 and apache running. I heard you need IIS to enable SMTP on a Windows machine but I don't want to run IIS because I feel Apache is better.

I want to config my IIS SMTP server to copy ALL sent mail to another address.
Or, to log in more detail what was sent (I have W3C logging turned on but it doesnt record the mail subject or body).
Basically when a user complains they didnt get an email, I want to be able to look in the log to see (a) the mail was sent and (b) the body/subject of the mail.

According to microsoft, Only SQL Express 2005 can be installed on windows 2003 web edition. N other sql server editions allowed. Sure, ok. So I downloaded express (SQLEXPR_ADV.EXE) and go to install. Install always stops (shuts down) with no warning ...
smooth Microsoft, really smooth.
-- And before anybody chimes in. Yes .net 2.0 and 3.0 are installed.

* I have a Windows 2003 Professional Edition server with 8GB installed.
* /PAE is enabled to use more than 4GB memory
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut /PAE
* I can see 8GB installed in the Task Manager
* This server is not for hosting but for running some cpu intensive applications. (I am not into webhosting industry)
But the maximum I ever seen been used is 4.66GB, and after that I run often into "Memory allocation failed" "Out of memory exception" application error.
How to use the full 8gb? Or is my box configured to use 8gb? Or is it dependent on application. Do I need a memory manager third-party software?

Im running a windows 2003 web edition server with apache 2.2.4 installed and a ported module; mod_dosEvasive, my server is vurnable for some sort of single machine dos attack. Not only my own server is vurnable but basically ANY apache 2.2.4 win32 server, even without additional modules (lik php) installed ( i checked by installing apache2 on 4 machines, all vurnable)
The tool used to attack apache is described here:
[url]
When attacked by the specific syn flood attack apache2 becomes useless and doesnt send any responses out anymore. When the attacker stops sending this flood Apache starts responding again.
how to secure a windows apache server against such an attack?

How do I lock this down? How can I block these guys from trying to login? The IPS are coming from all over the world though. I did whois for a few, and they range from Poland, Russia, to China.

Site is currently running on a single code single cpu p4 server. Am thinking of upgrading to a quad core Xeon server.
My site is pretty dynamic with lots of hits to php / mysql, and has trouble keeping up with the requests sometimes. Would a quadcore Xeon significantly help?
Server Software:
Windows 2003 Server
php 5.2.6
apache 2
mysql 4.1
Current Setup:
P4 2.8 single core/cpu.
Proposed setup
Xeon 3210 quadcore
I guess my confusion lies in the following:
1. Can win2003 server make use of the quadcores?
2. Does php / apache / mysql make use of the quadcores?
3. Will i see a significant increase in the amount of pages i can serve?

As my clients' needs expand, they're asking for chroot ssh/sftp setup. I'm currently on a dedicated Linux setup but don't really have the time to set up a whole new box with full virtualization or investigate a full chroot solution (baby on the way), and to be honest it would be less hassle to move to a new provider than worry about down time with sites.
What I'm looking for:
- linux hosting
- hosting for 30+ accounts, some with several domains
- at least 6 IP addresses for SSL certs
- each account in a full chroot environment (ssh/sftp/ftp) so they can't poke around each others' files, or each account set up in a virtual machine setup (ie: openvz)
- maildir
- spamassassin
- php 5, mysql, perl 5.8.8
- suexec apache would be nice

I have learnt it is harder to setup than I initially expected (since I have just moved from a shared hosting service). I am in need of some help setting up my DNS servers, as I am very confused. Here is most of the info I know:
1) I am running HyperVM
2) I've installed LXAdmin
3) I own the domain (purchased from xeodomains.com) runemart.com
4) My VPS hostname is: vps.runemart.com
5) I know my IP
6) My host has said:
'For VPS customers that have a HyperVM login you can now host forward DNS on the DNS servers rdns1.vaserv.com (US)rdns2.vaserv.com (UK'
And I am unsure what this means/how to do it.
I am not sure if I need some more information to set up my DNS, however I am sure that I can get it if I do.
Now, my questions begin. Firstly, I need to point my domain - runemart.com - somewhere. I believe I need to set up my DNS via HyperVM or LXAdmin so that they are something like: ns1.runemart.com and ns2.runemart.com. Though, is this correct? Am I able to set up my own actual domain name servers, or will my domain have to point at something like rdns2.vaserv.com?
If anyone can assist me in this I would be very greatful, as I am waiting to get my website running. This is all I will ask for now, I will take it one step at a time =).

I want to send some emails from my Win2003 server with IIS6.
I have turned on the SMTP server, but I dont know how to connect to it or set it up. How do I find out the connection details (e.g. smtp.server.com)?
I put a test mail as a txt message in the C:InetpubmailrootPickup folder and it sent OK to external mail address. NowI want to get some applications to use the server. I just need a really simple config, one email account, it doesnt even need to collect emails, just send them out. No authentication needed either.
One more thing: how to limit access to the SMTP server to only my server an no outsiders? I want it to be used by just two applications running on the server.

Everytime I try to send mail from Outlook Express via server.hostdomaincom:465 (SSL) I get an warning about the cert cant be trusted. Though I have server.hostdomaincom's self-signed cert installed through IE as a trusted root, the warning keeps coming up. How do I resolve this?
Also, my ISP has blocked outgoing port 25 connections. Is there any alternate SMPT (non-ssl)?
Another email issue:
1. I am trying to send mail to someone@externaldomain.com
2. The website of externaldomain.com is located on my server under clients reseller account.
3. MX servers of externaldomain.com are located somewhere else.
4. When the SMTP gets mail from me to someone@externaldomain.com, it looks up for "someone" in the local user table without looking at the real MX record.
5. The mail server thinks that it is the final destination and rejects the mail with "I cannot find 'someone' here". In fact, the mail server was supposed to accept the mail, lookup the MX record of externaldomain.com and deliver it to the responsible server where 'someone' really exists. But unfortunately the server is not doing that.

I have smtp set up and add an email account.
I know emailing out works but I don't know if emailing in works and if so, what
is it's name for DNS zone purposes.
Can you help me with command prompts that would tell me:
- verify I have smtp up and running and what it is called so I can add it to
my DNS record
- add an email account
- add an email account that aliases to another email

We have a few customers on our server who have membership sites. The sites are mainly geared around email. So they are sending out a ton of email everyday. At present our Cpanel server is processing the mail via exim and sending out to the various recipients.
This part is fine, the problem we are having is with bounced email and deferred email. As soon as Yahoo defer the email, the email queue builds up and the server load goes through the roof.
I know this is an issue with exim, but is there any way to reduce the load?
Alternatively, can anyone suggest a good SMTP server which we can get the users to route the email via.

I am a developer for a few organizations that each have maybe 50-60k email addresses for people who have signed up with them.
Right now they are using Constant Contact.
They are also using my own CMS to manage their websites. I would like to expand my CMS to include email capabilities.
The problem is that these clients are all on shared hosting and the shared hosting company doesn't want me sending out more than 80 or so emails a minute using their SMTP server.
So I was wondering if there was a service out there that would give me access to an SMTP server that I could connect to using phpmailer or a similar program to get the emails out quickly.
My question is - are there any services out there like this and am I approaching this in the right way?
