I would have to assume That No shared hosting service provider would agree to provide full server administrator privileges directly to the Business's customers.
The Company In View is DiscountASP.NET.
Their Officials state that they can use the Web server's feature delegation capabilities and ASP.NET enhancements to enable customer access to key Web service parameters quickly, securely, and more cost-effectively than ever.
I am having trouble accessing any kind of services on one computer from another computer on my LAN.
I can ping toher computers and access windows file sharing but if I run any kind of server like apache or Dorgem(webcam) I can't access it from any other computer on the LAN..I've tried changing the ports etc but to no avail..
I am not the amin of this network but is there anything else I can do on my end to get things working..?
Is this a common occurence, for admins to stop this traffic?
Currently I am hosting my web site myself on my PC at home (Jboss+ mysql). Using a dedicated server with the highest spec can cost me a fortune knowing that I've just started my online recruitment business.
Should I just hire good hosting services to do things more professionally or should I keep hosting myself and learn how avoid many downtimes
if there is a hosting company which provides free SEO tools or other web site promotion services for its customers. I know the companies which provide their customers with free domains if they buy their hosting, but I have never heard of hosting companies which provide free website promotion services for their clients, do such companies exists?
I woke up this morning to find I wasn't able to access my domain based email or my website. So I figured I would check with my host, (www.hostpc.com), and I was unable to access them, also.
I had someone else from a remote location and PC check and they can access hostpc as well as my website.
Before we get any further I would ask that people not relentlessly spam this thread with this or that, telling me how great your web-host is. Im sure it is. I do want serious replies that address my concerns.
I am currently with a web host called bluehost.com -- with which I am becoming VERY dissatisfied with. They are now consistently having downtime which causes me a lot of frustration when I am in the middle of editing a file (or many files as I like to do). Frustration aside, what is this going to cost me when I am not just developing and rather depending on them to keep me alive and available? This is NOT why I pay $7 a month.
Further, I find it absolutely rude and unacceptable the way I am treated by their customer service representatives. In this regard I am uncertain what is worse, letting them know Ive troubleshooted the issue on my own and therefore know something, or acting as if I don't know anything at all about the problem. Either way I receive rude, snarky, condescending, and / or passive-aggressive irritation from aformentioned representative. They "guide" me through steps they probably read from a script and when they are done "diagnosing" the problem I feel as though I've been raped. Its quite an ugly scene. I do want to mention however that I have NEVER had even 'acceptable' customer service from any of the 4 or 5 web-hosts I have tried (by tried I mean more than 6 months of sticking it out).
I wish to find a web host company that is relatively large in size. This would imply a few things to me that:
A) They have the capacity to reduce or eliminate downtime to something approaching zero at worst and zero at best.
B) They have the capacity to staff knowledgeable customer service representatives that are not snivelling, sexually challenged uber-geeks with a grudge against the universe.
I do realize this request is like expecting politicians to be honest or more specifically if the said host is large and resource laden, they probably did not get there by hiring the best and brightest to sit by the phone.
C) They offer SSH access to their customers. And other small details would include a list of basic and expected necessities such as: MySQL, PHP, FastCGI, Zend Optimizer, sub-domains, pop3 accounts / mail, a control panel for account settings, and of course error logs and the like.
So, if anyone knows of a host with these features, please let me know and / or please let me know of your experiences with this host. If you have had problems with Bluehost please keep in mind that they have treated me *relatively* well, with the exception of customer service not worth the goo between my toes.
I am moving hosts and my old host is unable to backup my current site and give me a single tar or zip file of my websites (They do not use cpannel)
The only access I have to them is var ftp and there custom control pannel, I have been backuing up.
My new cpanel host has given me SHH access and I was trying to run a ftpsync a perl based script to sync a site but it times out "421 No Transfer Timeout (900 seconds)"
At the moment I am backing up the site to my local pc but it has been running for the last 12 hours, All the sites only total about 350mb but they are made up of lots of small files and I think that this is the reason why it is taking so long.
I wanted to know if any one had any other ideas as I am a little bit worried that I might lose some data that is why I would like to some how backup my old host direct to my new host.
I signed up for hosting with IX Web Hosting in April of 2007. There have been two occasions that they provided the perfect example of Terrible Customer Service. So much so, my last pony ride with IX Web Hosting was my last. I decided to call it quits and move my account to Host Gator.
I keep my most important sites on a dedicated server at Servint.net. If you are interested in a dedicated server or VPS, I highly recommend Servint. You will not beat the level of service and professionalism this company offers. But thatâs another post in itself.
The point is, I had some SEO tests I wanted to perform and I was looking for a hosting company that would allow me to host 10 different domains in the same account on different ip addresses. IX Web Hosting had the plan I was looking for. So in April of 2007, I signed up for a hosting account.
Overall, I was pretty satisfied with the server performance at IX Hosting. I experienced very little if any downtime from server issues. They donât offer a standard cpanel interface like most web hosts. It appears to be a proprietary / in house control panel.
It was pretty straight forward and with a little time I was up to speed.
Then on June 5, 2008, I got the following email from a System Administrator at IX Web Hosting. --------------------------- Hello, My name is Anthony, and I am a system administrator at IXWebhosting. Iâm here to ensure a reliable and fast hosting / e-mail environment. This is the reason why I ask you to get in touch with us.
We have received numerous complaints from third-parties about spam originating from your website. As you may know, spam is an on-going problem for all internet users, hence all companies have very strict rules against spam. I am here to ensure that neither you nor any other customer is facing any downsides which could be the result of these spam regulations.
We ask you to immediately cease and desist any such activities. If you are unaware of this activity, please contact me or any of my colleagues via this ticket, phone or live-chat so that we can find the reason for the spam activity together and fix the issue instead of the symptom. Viruses and things of that nature may be installed on your computer and will cause the spamming. We recommend that you run an anti-virus program. If you currently do not possess an anti-virus program, you may download a free version. Please just follow the link below to find Googleâs best links for free anti-virus software:
In order to ensure your hosting and mail environment is working flawlessly, we ask you to get in touch with us within the next 72 hours. I highly appreciate your time. Best Regards, Anthony Washington System Administrator IXWebhosting -----------------------------------
They identified the domain as bestadtracking.com. This is a domain I own but have never promoted. Not only had I not sent spam through IX Web Hosting, I averaged less than 200 sent email a month on all the domains on my account. So on June 6, 2008 I responded to IX Web Hosting with the following two messages. ----------------------------------- Hi Anthony, I can assure you I am not sending spam from this domain or any others. Iâm a little surprised that this domain is in question? I set it up over a year ago and havenât ever promoted it. I donât send any type of email over this domain. I have no reason to. It gets no traffic or inquiries.
Are you sure there isnât some type of mistake? Otherwise, there are a couple of php style contact forms on that site. Could a hacker use that sort of thing to send spam? How can we track this down? Thanks, Brent Crouch 615-389-XXXX ----------------------------------- Here is the second email I sent on the same day. ----------------------------------- Hi Anthony,
I am using AVG on my computer and the scan completed finding no viruses. Besides that, I am using Outlook to manage the mail on several of my domains. I donât even have a send account setup for bestadtracking.com on my computer. As I stated in the previous reply, I have no reason to since this domain is not promoted. Can you give me the IP address of where the spam originates? Iâd like to compare that to my IP address here at home and office. Thanks, Brent Crouch -----------------------------------
I had no information to track the issue any further. The lack of response from IX Web Hosting left me to believe the issue had been resolved or there had been a mistake. Then 4 days later on June 10, 2008 I got this message. ----------------------------------- Brent We tried to reach you today in order to resolve this issue, but unfortunately it has been well over 72 hours since this ticket was placed. We must sadly suspend your services, please do not hesitate to call us at 1-800-385-0450 any time, day or night. Best Regards Ian ----------------------------------- Amazing! They give me no information to solve this problem. On top of that, they donât respond to my ticket in 4 days and because I didnât answer the phone when they called they suspended not only the domain in question but every domain listed in my account.
I called in and spoke to a tech support guy who allowed me to remove the domain in question and in return, he restored my other domains. He also left a message to have the tech support manager call me the following day.
The manager I spoke to apologized for the way the ticket was handled and the lack of information that was given. He said he would follow up with the employees that were responsible for the ticket and make sure it never happened again. He was helpful in looking at the server logs and determining how someone had loaded a spam bot onto my site.
Apology accepted. Stuff happens. I considered it water under the bridge and not a big deal. Not so muchâ¦..
After my first run in with IX Web Hosting, I wrote the whole incident off as a fluke. The manager I spoke to seemed very sincere and assured me that wasnât proper protocol and wouldnât happen again. I was trucking right along until I got this email from them on October 26, 2008. ----------------------------------- Dear Brent Crouch, We have received notification of phishing material in your account. Phishing files are usually placed through some type of exploit of out dated code, weak file and folder permissions. Packaged shopping carts and photo galleries are usual sources as hackers find exploits and developers fix them almost daily, so unless you constantly update the software or completely secure it things like this can happen.
You must agree to remove this content and update any software that has resulted in security holes. To protect your account from further action you must agree to our request for compliance. Please respond to this message stating your intent to do so. You may either log into your control panel with us, and access this ticket via the 24/7 help desk, or provide this ticket number to our Live Chat or phone representatives. Failure to respond to this message within 72 hours will result in the suspension of the affected domain with us until such a time as this matter is resolved. Michael ----------------------------------- The email gave me no indication of which domain had been hacked. When I wrote to live help and gave them the ticket number, I spent 10 minutes waiting only to be told they didnât know which of my domains had been effected. They recommended I reply to the online support ticket.
Here is the email I sent them in response on October 27, 2008. ----------------------------------- I replied to live help and they could not find any information. So far you havenât told me which domain is a problem. Please give me the info I need to correct this problem and Iâll take care of it. Brent Crouch 615-389-XXXX ----------------------------------- Eight hours later, I was able to find the problem by viewing all the files on my domains and looking for the files that had been recently changed. It turned out my brentcrouch.com domain had been hacked and setup with all sorts of eBay and bank phising pages. The site operates on a Wordpress platform which is widely used and is a big target for hackers. [url] I wrote back to IX Web Hosting for a second time on October 27, 2008. ----------------------------------- I found the problem on my brentcrouch.com domain. I updated the wordpress software to the latest and cleaned up the problem. The only exception is the brentcrouch.com/forum directory. I am unable to delete this directory as the hacker has removed my access. Please delete the directory. Thanks, Brent Crouch ----------------------------------- The following day, here is the email I got back from IX Web Hosting. ----------------------------------- Brent: Thank you for your attention to this matter. Per your request we have removed: /brentcrouch.com/forum - deleted We will be closing this ticket at this time. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to assist.
Please note that this is the second time this problem occurred. Unfortunately, I have to bring to your attention that as per our terms of service a third instance will result in immediate account termination without notice. No backups will be provided. If you have any questions about how to avoid this from happening again our support team will be glad to advise.
Respectfully Frankie Support Tech Representative ----------------------------------- When I seen that response, I was pissed! I run my own server at Servint.net. Iâve hosting accounts at several other hosting companies. Iâve never had a site hacked except from IX Web Hosting.
In 4 months, Iâve had two sites hacked. In both instances, IX Hosting was zero help in locating the source of the problem. In the first incident, they didnât even reply to my ticket for 4 days. In the latest incident, they couldnât even tell me what domain was hacked.
Then they send me an email telling me if it happens again not only will they suspend my account, theyâll deny me access to my files! Huh?
Thatâs not a risk Iâm willing to take. With the high costs of obtaining customerâs in this business, Iâm a little surprised they donât do a better job of trying to retain them. In my opinion, this policy is unacceptable and makes IX Web Hosting one of the worst hosts Iâve ever dealt with.
I just signed up for a hosting account with Host Gator and have already moved all my domains over. So far, so good. Whatâs your experience with IX Web Hosting?
I created a new virtual site and cloned an existing to to the new docroot to have content. But when I access it I receive the Access Denied you do not have permission to access . . .I've checked all my entries and unless I'm blind I cannot figure out how to remedy this on my Windows 2003R2 server running apache 2.2.x
I migrate from plesk 9.5 to another server with plesk 12.0.18, and then outlook and mail default from iphone don't work, but tunderbird and webmail work well.
In outlook when i put the same configuration than tunderbird and i try to send mail out from my domain said this error:
I found a great little app called ID Shutdown Manager which bascially lets you do stuff like wake on LAN, Shutdown, Log Off etc.
The App also has a cgi script which you can call from a web server so you get a web interface to the program.
This is exactly my reason for getting the app as I just wanted to host a web page where I could login from the internet and wake on lan my media PC.
Ok so...
The app gives you all the iis or apache setup instructions and tells you to place the cgi script which is actually a .exe into the scripts folder and then enable basic authentication for it.
Done.
So if I navigate to <SERVER>/scripts/sdmancgi.exe its supposed to give me a user / pass prompt and then when login successful I see the app and can wake on lan etc.
ok I have got this to work
on the actual machine where server is running I can access it in IE7 by localhost etc.. and it works
However when I try to access from another PC in my lan by typing <SERVER>/scripts/sdmancgi.exe I get a nice little message saying the content cannot be displayed you may require to insall a program or something to display it.
If I try to access the page from firefox on same remote PC, it works!
I can also access page from outside my LAN, it works on my N95 browser.
Also I have had friends try it from firefox from the Internet and they say it works as well.
Forgot to mention I am running on port 8081 as I already have other servers running on 8080 and 80 (one is my router and the other server installed itself from setup.exe and I dont know what server its using)
I have also tried latest apache server as well as some other free one. Both have the same effect. Ok in firefox, not in IE.
One would think its a problem with the cgi file not compatible with IE7 however, I even tried to go to default page setup in IIS <SERVER>:8081 and I get the same message. So at this point the server hasnt even tried to access CGI or prompt for Basic Authentication.
I tried googling and not much luck. I read something about CSS and when I view source of failed web page from IE7 it mentions something about CSS so dont know if this is it?
I am using Plesk 9.2 with windows 2008 server and all of the sudden our DNS services goes down every other 2nd and 3rd day and we have to restart the dns services every time to bring it up, it doesnt even show any error message under windows event.
In account created by my server i can't create database whit utf8_unicode.
I am in pozition to use Create database wizard but there latin2 is default.
In whm on my (VPS) i find out that in myphpadmin can create database whit utf8_unicode but how can i share this database whit the privet account that i crate form my whm.
for the Past 5 years I've been using a VPS with cPanel to point an A record to the IP instead of using the other (shared, resseller and other VPS) IPs or public DNS.
I'm looking for a similar service, that can provide:
- my own DNS (or the hability to point my DNS to the IP)
I've purchased a NL Master reseller (about to purchase one in the US) and then a small VPS to see what more I could do, after transferring my site over to the VPS from the NL server I thought I'd come up with the idea with selling master reseller accounts, (both from NL and US master reseller services) the reason I came up with is because the VPS isn't to large to really do anything but seems perfect to keep a database, payment portal, WHMCS, my site, and hopefully all of my client information. What i want to do is somehow connect all 3 together so that when i do create a new client in LxAdmin I can select witch server I want to create it on and what package/permissions and what not, all from the VPS.
Example: LxAdmin -> create client -> fills out form basically similar that to the one in WHM
Resellers/VPS run CentOS Linux WHM: 11.24.2 cPanel: 11.24.4-R35075 CENTOS 5.2 i686 virtuozzo
So basic question, is all this possible ? this including domains/email/ftp/ect.
I wanted to know if there is a provider that will host our sites and provide site maintence all in one package(EX: any changes we want to the website they can do it). We are trying to move away from having multiple hosts and resellers from our multiple sites for our hosting and site maintenance. Alot of companies out there just do the hosting and suggest to get a third party to provide the site maintenance. Basically we want the ability to change anything on our website but have someone who knows what they are doing and do it for us and not take forever to implement changes to the website.
I am switching from shared hosting to managed VPS. I have minimal knowledge of UNIX/Apache, pretty good with PHP and programming in general.
So, what I have now is my VPS, with 512mb of ram, CentOS, cpanel and my two sites, not live yet, that is, I haven't changed dns records in the registrar.
I want to try to optimize the box or whatever is the correct name for it and understand the whole thing better. Mainly to learn more, I dot' think I'll be pressed for memory or bandwidth for now. Still, at least knowing things I can optimize for speed of space.
Few things that I assume should allow for some simplification and RAM savings(hopefully) is that:
a) Both sites are hobby sites, not very big load. Few thousand visitors a day. Traffic is around 10gb monthly combined.
b) Both sites are mine, nobody else on that box, so I don't have to worry about customers screwing things up and caging things internally.
Based on that, I don't really need email for the second site domain.
When I run top command I see 2 exim processes running. Is that normal, or is it because I have 2 domains registered there? And if yes can one be disabled?
Same applies to pop3-login and imap-login processes, 2 copies of each. Can I have just one of each, i.e. exim, pop3-login and imap-login?
Next, I selected not to run log analyzer cpanellogd for 21 hours, i.e. it'll run for 3 hours a day. I assume that should be sufficient for the site like mine?
I did read sticky about securing the site and quite a bit about Apache/mysql optimizations.
what free DNS hosting service to use? So far I have had experience with the following services:
Xname.org - fine, admin-wise kind of DNS zone management. Con: it is relatively often offline (DoS/whatever0
EditDns.net - fine, but it has several times rolled abck their DB state, wiping out my records. I can't name that a rliable service.
EveryDns.net - fine, quick, easy to manage. Con: I have tried to donate, to have limits removed, but my donation was never recorded, all the attempts to contact the administration failed, as well.
This kinda follows on from a prev thread about advice on finding another isp.
My (soon to be ex) isp had email outage for over 3 days, I lost emails which means losing business and I don't want to be in this situation ever again.
I know that stuff happens and machines do go down etc. but I need to know how if possible a decent isp would be able to work around this, should they have a standby server, could they intercept/redirect incoming emails even though the account was down.
I'm not very technical but these are the questions I need to ask any prospective isp's
Every month, I pay my invoice and everything is fine but in Febuary, after I paid it, I received a ''Payment reminder'' and I was a bit surprised but I replied explaining it was already paid and gave the paypal transaction ID #. I received an apology and they said it was fixed. A week later (or so), I received the a ''reminder #2''. I replied the same thing and the girl at the billing service aplogied and assured me that the invoice was now marked as paid and it shouldn't happen anymore.
This morning I got a ''Last reminder'' (15 days overdue). I sent the same informations again but now my website is disabled.
Am I alone in this situation or is it a known issue with Flux services or anything? I find a bit ridiculous, to be honest, to have a such issue about an invoice that IS paid and confirmed by them as paid but having the system send me reminder over and over and having, subsequently, them disabling my website.
I am interested in blocking translation services from accessing my site, such as Google Translate and Yahoo Babelfish.
Google's translation tool adheres to a nice meta tag, so that's taken care of, but Yahoo doesn't appear to do so. The way they work is akin to a proxy, using the IP address of the user, and they don't use a standard referrer, so I can't do a referrer or IP block.
