I am running a website with a huge traffic on a single server with 2GB Ram and its working fine from last 3 years but from last 1 week the website is being unstable, not all the time but sometimes,
Following are the conditions when the problem occures:-
- When we enter the URL in browser and hit enter, it takes bit long on connecting...before reaching to the website, once the title appear at the top of the browser the page loads normally and while browsing the website, sometimes it gives page cannot be displayed error and we have to refresh the page.
- at that time when I check the result from [url]it gives bit high Average Response Time.
- On the other everything seems to be normal on SSH,
load average: 0.90, 0.96, 0.79
Mem: 3116360k total, 2841948k used, 274412k free,
if there is any specific way (maybe logs) to see what is using the swap memory of a dedicated server..
its a server with 8GB ram.. it has 60% of memory used, and a constant swap memory usage of 30%.. i thought that in normal conditions swap memory was not used..
i've recently ran into a problem that i do not have power to solve as it requires my datacenter to fix.
I did like to know how could i verify, monitor and come up with enough data to prove where and that there is a problem within the network so they can at least see and think if they want to keep the problem or solve it at some point ?
Tools that i could use, methods everything is welcome.
I also belive that many that do not have this knowledge will like this topic if any experts could come by and share a little of knowledge.
Is there a way to determine from monitoring the packets coming in to my IP address what domain on my server is being attacked? Something like Tcpdump maybe can tell me? Having DDoS trouble and I'm trying to identify the domain being hit.
Does anyone have experience with the cheap $1 web hosts?
I don't mind paying for hosting, but I only need one script installed on a server that runs a cron file once per day and I don't want to pay $5 to $10 for that.
My question is basically this: is my credit card safe with these $1 web hosts? Can they be trusted to keep my identity safe?
I need a quicker way to find spammers. I've found a decent way to find the scripts, but I want to find heavy offenders by a simple command line or something to identify all scripts sending e-mail in let's say a text document or something.
I am using Plesk 8.6 with Mail Enable standard edition.
Since past two weeks the things were working fine. Yesterday I had activated the antispam option given in the admin panel of plesk. And since today morning nobody is able to login into their mailboxes. Outlook gives error message as:
"Task 'mail.absoluteinternational.net - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server responded: -ERR Unable to log on. Only one connection to a mailbox permitted at a time.' "
And webmail gives error message as "Login Failed".
Also if I do test account settings in MS Outlook, all the tasks would come as completed except Log on to incoming mail server (POP3). If I check the POP logs I get the error message as:
"07/21/09 01:17:28POPS368122.169.82.167PASSPASS *-ERR Unable to log on. Only one connection to a mailbox permitted at a time.018"
... plus some in the opt folder (that should be just the cache, uh?)
the problem is that I tried to open all of them, to see where the hell php was getting the settings from, but none of them seem to reflect php's settings.
meaning, I don't know what file I can use to configure PHP.
all of them, for instance, say 'memory_limit: 32M', but php is set at 8M, and phpinfo() tells me memory_limit 8M.
any idea why this might be happening?
does Plesk have some tool to configure PHP that makes PHP ignore my changes?
I recently updated all my cPanel software, and now when I try to Edit a DNS zone, I get:
Unable to parse zone: Error while parsing zonedata for *DOMAIN NAME HERE*.com: expected valid rname, line 4 ...propagated at /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/CPAN/Net/DNS/ZoneFile/Fast.pm line 142.
im using fireftp and i chmod the folders to 777 but it seems that im still unable to delete the folders as i get the message 550 directory not empty etc.
I am having major problems getting php-gd working properly in my LAMP environment. I am running 64 bit CentOS and PHP 5.2.6. I am trying to get gd working with PHP. Here are my currently installed packages related to gd:
I have copied the gd.so from /usr/lib64/php/modules to the "extension location" specified in my php.ini and I have enabled the gd extension. But when I restart apache I get this error in the error log:
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: gd: Unable to initialize module Module compiled with module API=20050922, debug=0, thread-safety=0 PHP compiled with module API=20060613, debug=0, thread-safety=0 These options need to ma tch in Unknown on line 0
And when I look at phpinfo(), gd does not show up.
My server was having a high load so I stop httpd and mysqld. I tried to restart both service but only httpd is starting and mysqld failed. It keeps timing out.
service mysqld start Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon. Starting MySQL: [FAILED]
It was working and I only trying to restart it.
The load on my server now is 0 because the website is down.
I am using cPanel server which I am unable to restart the Apache service httpd has failed, please contact the sysadmin.

I have been struggling with a couple of new servers that we want to run Centos 5 on. For a second assume that is our desire so going back to 4.x isn't an option yet.
Now while I mention Centos 5, the problem seems to be with PAM and x64.
When trying to login to the server via ssh, the login succeds but then immediately kicks the user out. I have tried this with root and another user created. I have set the UsePam option to no to try to resolve this in sshd_config.
On the H-Sphere forum I found this reference:
[url]
" if i try to connect with ssh and i enter the right password i get an error and ssh closes the connection. The answer already was in the ticket you opened:
Quote:
That is known bug dealt with PAM authentication.
The bug was fixed for i386 systems long time ago. But it was not fixed for x86_64 architecture.
We build FreeVPS kernel new version 1.5-13.1 for x86_64 architecture to fix the problem. We also installed the kernel into the box IP 64.71.227.16.
Please reboot the box with the new FreeVPS kernel version: 2.6.9-freevps-1.5-13.1smp. Let us know the result."
Does anyone know how to resolve this? A reinstall of PAM was attempted by a well known sysadmin here but to no avail.
i have a dedicated server with cpanel and when trying to addd any accounts i get the message dns zone already exists but when i go to edit a dns zone to check i am getting the message below
Unable to read data from /dev/urandom (No such file or directory).
I'm using a basic PHP script on my website, but it will not send mail out. I know the script works, I use it on my other websites (which I do not host).
Now I have setup a Windows 2000 Server running IIS 5. What do I need installed (if anything) to be able to send mail from the sever?
trying to find a working solution for setting up a subdomain for my Apache server.
Here is my setting:
(1) I have two virtual hosts defined in httpd-vhosts.conf: domain1.com and domain2.com. Included NameVirtualHost *:80 both into httpd-vhosts.conf and httpd.conf.
4) Here the problem comes. When I enter sub.domain2.com into browser, it shows domain1.com content.
(5) Based on some suggestions, I removed asterisks from ServerAlias lines. This made the subdomain working, but messed up the other two servers, which became unavailable or broken down.
