Turnaround For Filter Updates (new Allocation)
Jan 23, 2008
After obtaining a new allocation from ARIN, how long do you typically wait before your upstreams update their filters to allow the new announcement? Which providers are most proactive? Least?

I did have a chance to really talk with the owner, Navid on the issues I did have and on what was really going on. One of the things I did have trouble was downtime, and I was assured no more of this, and latest news on what was going on.
Some of the new things they're doing
- New support staff, and more
- New servers from DC (Databank?) (which i'll be moved too ;])
- Less or No downtime at all; and total care support
- More support options
and the results are being seen, they immediately solved all my issues hopefully I won't run into them, but dear members who read this, as a owner; I've decided to go sole proprietorship and work sales, support, billing; all from my blackberry and cell phone around the clock, and downtime is the last thing I can have. Currently I have over 125 accounts and being one of the top free hosts, and clients new to the web = lots of questions. So uptime and reliability from a powerful host is needed. I thank BuyAVPS for making the turnarounds and though they've been only for 1 year, they're one of the rare hosts with the right price and great deals.
I must say, they're support team is fabulous and has been helping me out constantly, from installing scripts to great support and now they're offering more support options.
I've been with them for now 3-4 months, or maybe more I've signed up when they started; and they're coming a long way now and soon to be one of the best vps hosts.

How could I check the amount of CPU allocation I have on my VPS
Currently I have a VPS 1GB 50%CPU,
not what I would say is fast or can do sitemapping, I would like to be able to benchmark, as my small vps seems better and is 1/3 of the price

Q1: You've got one server with 8MB RAM. You offer a single VPS plan with 256GB guaranteed RAM. Does this mean that you are limited to exactly 32 VPS clients on this machine? (Or 8 clients if you had a single 1MB plan.)
Q2: On a single Virtuozzo machine, again with 8MB RAM, do providers typically mix and match plans on the same box? In other words will they typically put their 1MB clients on the same box as the 256MB clients?

Is there a program for linux that exists to troubleshoot memory allocation problems?
I am bound and determined to get this to work..I think I need a new direction..a new tool to use to figure out what's going wrong.
This is on a vps server...yet I feel this post belongs here..since this is extremely technical in nature.
I have already become an expert of kernel settings...and that really has not helped terribly.

I got this from a client I host:
We get this message on our forum (arcade section)
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to
allocate 131375 bytes) in
/home/XXXXX/public_html/forums/sources/classes/class_display.php on line 482
Before I look into that, is it a server problem (my responsibility), or a problem with the client's forum software (not my responsibility).
If it's something I have to fix from my end, what do I do? I've never encountered that error that I can remember.

I just signed up to a new VPS server with 640MB RAM guaranteed and 2GB burst RAM..
Here's what I've got on my privvmpages:
Soft Limit: 524,288
Hard Limit: 655,360
I stumbled upon this thread (webhostingtalk.com/archive/index.php/t-466457.html) and realized that I only get 512MB guaranteed RAM instead of 640MB RAM as written on their specs..
Is my calculation all right?.. or did I miss something here..

I just moved data centres here in the UK. I've paid for a 47U rack with 8amps of power. I plugged everything in and the meter is reading 8.9 - 9.1 amps. Seems fine at the moment, should I be worried about it tripping or is it just a case of if they find out they'll hike my bill up?

My mail server stopped working this weekend, when I got in today I restarted and all the emails came through. The panic_log shows:

Our company currently has colo in NY, UK and Geneva and have recently started to rent some space in an Australian datacentre.
In each of our existing centres we have a /26 range of IP addresses assigned to us (62 usable IPs) and we requested the same for our Australian installation.
The colo company has email us today with our IP range allocation and they seem to have chosen to allocate us 12 seperate /29 ranges (6 usable IPs).
This seems really strange to me, is it normal practise? Why not just assign us one /26 as requested.
Also, our WatchGuard firewalls only accept one range in the configuration and then you add in all of the IP aliases seperatly. If I set a the IP range to bigger than the range we own (to cover all 12 seperate ranges we've been issued) would this cause problems for the people that own the other IPs in this large range?

Im getting this error when i try to create a package for a client. As far as i can tell, everything is set up properly. Its located inside my WHM area, but the billing software wont create the account and gives me:
Package Not Allowed or Exceeded Resource/Account Allocation
but i have no resource or account allocation settings set. everything is wide open.
My second question is, if i want to give someone unlimited bandwidth/storage, how do i do that? ive tried -1 and 0, but it keeps kicking it out as not valid. any ideas?

has anyone successfully updated from bind9.2.x to BIND 9.5.0-P1? Were there any problems regarding settings, zone files, etc etc? Can you explain the process in detail for the update? One of my customers wishing to have this done, is running CentOS, I assume yum would be the best course of actions?

Lately we have been receiving a lot of complaints from our users who do not wish to update their scripts. I have been telling those users that they have to keep their scripts up to date if they want to avoid having that script exploited or used to send spam or other malicious intentions. The ramifications of a single user on a server not keeping their script up to date affects all of the users on the server.
I am just wondering how other hosting providers handle this. When a client threatens to leave because you don't allow them to run an outdated script, what actions do you take to try and keep the client?

I have a Windows VPS account with a well-known hosting company. According to their knowledgebase, they "apply Microsoft security updates directly from the hardware node. For this reason, they are not able to be applied from within your VPS."
I discovered this after attempting to apply a Service Pack on my VPS, which messed up my VPS. Now that I've learned this the hard way, here's my question: Is this true with other Windows VPS hosting companies too?
While I understand that I'm responsible for what I update on my VPS, I'm frustrated that the hosting company doesn't take more steps to prevent this from happening...

cPanel has released a very important update a short while ago. I don't normally post when updates are released, but this is one that should not be missed. More information can be found here:

and here:

Stay safe.
edit: the *second* I posted this, I found out there will be another tomorrow. Keep your eyes on layer1.cpanel.net.

I have been with primaryvps since May and in last two months I was very busy... and then came back from vacation, it was working fine for a few days... indeed, I could access my server as late as last night. But then my server is down today, with empty page at primaryvps.com and there's nothing else.
So I got nervous and came here to check... and I realized that a lot of people had troubles with them, perhaps more than I did, but then are they really going out of business? As a customer I received no warning of any kind, though.
Any certain info on their current status would be appreciated. I wrote them (support and victor's email) but didn't get responses... In the past they replied very fast, so there's something strange going on for sure...

I'm running Plesk 9.2.2 & using the supplied AWStats install. Where will I find the configuration that dictates when AWStats will be updated? It's currently updating at 3.36am daily, & I'd like to set it to hourly. Can't find anything in the root or psaadm crontabs & not sure where else to look.

to install secuity patches for each VPS hosted on single host or appling it to host running multiple VPS is enough.
Does same applies to firewall related software..Use it for individual VPS on single host?

this only shows up in Centos 5, it seems.
You do the good ole "yum update"
and...something very bad happens:
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
>> Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
>>
>>
>> Could not find any working storages.
Ok..this is one of the times google fails me..I guess because this is a fairly new problem.
If you are lucky:
Visit the rpm repo of your choice..manually download:
python-sqlite*
and
sqlite*
and force a re-install:
rpm -ivh python-sqlite* --force
rpm -ivh sqlite* --force
Sadly..I did find that..and it was tried..and did not work for me.
The fix? Ohhh...you gonna love this:
I completely removed python and everything that depends on it.
Drastic? Oh yeah. But after wasting two days with fixes that did not help...I figured this was the only way. Drastic measures were called for.
It was. It worked. You put everything back..and it is fine.
Oh..I noticed yum.3.2.1is available..and decided to give that a shot as well. It is fine.
Certainly not as much fun as the time I decided to attempt a upgrade of glib2 on a vps..but close.

Basically I do all my updating now. I have a VPS with...*GASP*...godaddy and their policy is you do all the updating to your server yourself. They will not help you in any way unless you pay their "extra special services team" 80 bucks an hour.
Now, I'm not that much of a server genius, I can find my way around and do certain updates. I'm just tired of doing it and also have a huge fear that I'll screw something up.
Is there a company that will do a full switchover from godaddy to their service, does all the updates and installs programs for a small fee for you? I also need one that is comparable in price. I'm paying 52 bucks a month now.

I can't switch to apache from litespeed. I use WHM. I was wondering, can I udpate apache through whm with litespeed? Does anyone have experience with this?

I believe there is a gap in my understanding of VPS with regards to just how much control you really have over the system. VPS gives you "root access" which typically means top-level access... but in reality, the true super user is a boot-up console user. Few VPS providers that I've investigated offer console access to your VPS while booting.
What, than, can be done about system upgrades or using advanced features like root filesystem encryption? Say, for instance, that my provider offers openSUSE 10.1 and I want 10.2. I would be loath to do such a thing if I can't reboot and watch things as it goes. What if the upgrade failed and you need to drop to a single-user mode to fix it?
Or maybe my real misunderstanding here is that you can't upgrade a system in a VPS if the provider doesn't offer the upgrade?
And what if I want my entire system (other than a boot partition) to be encrypted. This would include an encrypted root and swap. This also requires a password at bootup well before any services (like sshd) start.
Again, maybe the real answer is that I can't do that at all anyway and so it doesn't matter.
