Dedicated Server Backup/Uptime
Jun 17, 2008I currently run a business that has 125 to 150 domains, with 150GB worth of files and databases.
Right now my business is hosted on Hostgator. The files and database are not 100% protected if a hard drive crashes. I Found www.mosso.com and they take all my hosting problems of 100% uptime and backups away, but they also create a few because I don't get command line access to a server.
We use GIT to manage the upgrade and development process of the application, so we need command line access.
My question to you is:
How do you handle this backup issue?
If I can take my focus off of making sure there is 100% uptime and backups if something crashes automatically, I can grow my business much faster.

I think that a Monitor service that do a test every 30 minutes dont cause any inpact, but if the interval on check test is every 1 minute.
Can this every minute check affect in any way the performance of a server or vps?

Tracking Down Load
May 13, 2008I have a CentOS box here that is causing some strange load. Brand new X3230 (4*2.66Ghz), 2GB ram and 2*500GB SATA2 in raid-1 on a LSI MegaIDE controller.
Basically the server is continuesly at a load of 1. However I dont see why. No CPU load, and no IO as far as I can see. Does anybody have a tip where to look for the problem?

With the WHT benchmark test the machine scores about 520 points, seems not bad either.
Only thing I could think of is that it has something to do with the raidcard. The data transfer rate is quite low. Could it be that the card is rebuilding the array? Can I check that without rebooting?
Tracking Down A User
Mar 22, 2007A user is running something that eats up all the server memory very quickly. Looking at the access logs this is all I get:

Now there are quite a few index2.php's located on my server so I can not figure out who is running this. When I run ps ax -o pid,user,rss,command|grep httpd
I get about 20-30 of these:
13808 nobody 17360 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL
how I can figure out where this script is being run from?

Nokia Browser (PDA/Phone Browser)
UP.Browser (PDA/Phone Browser)
Motorola Browser (PDA/Phone Browser)
My question is, are the visitors a day accurate - which I take to be uniques. It seems these must be pretty far off.
Presently they show an extremely high multiple of that for pages/s (approx 30 -50 times the visitors). I've never heard of visitors clicking this many pages.
I've not come across these kind of number with other non-mobile sites and it makes wonder if its right.
A) is tracking handled in the same way on mobile devices as on desktops (cookies or sessions?) And is this reliable for mobile/handheld/cell-phone devices?
B) There really isn't much of a chance of these page views being a result of bookmarks - the page views don't seem to add up to this.
The 'Browser Top 10' hits coming from 'unknown' are > 50% of the total amount.
Are there any quirks with awstats or other tracking software when it comes to mobile devices, even though the activity is taking place on the server? I take it Urchin may be more accurate?

What do you guys use to keep track of all the details for the site (location, company info, etc). We're using a homegrown filemaker database atm, but we don't want to continue using this when we get 50+ sites. It doesn't matter if its web-based or a standalone program.
