I am getting increasing frustrated each day as I went from shared server to shared server and now I'm on a VPS and my server is typically down 2-5% per day. Is this normal? Is it to much to expect 99% uptime?

For example using a shared hosting server B to ping dedicated server A to see if A is still running. Else B will send a email to the sys admin. Something along this line.
I currently run a business that has 125 to 150 domains, with 150GB worth of files and databases.
Right now my business is hosted on Hostgator. The files and database are not 100% protected if a hard drive crashes. I Found www.mosso.com and they take all my hosting problems of 100% uptime and backups away, but they also create a few because I don't get command line access to a server.
We use GIT to manage the upgrade and development process of the application, so we need command line access.
My question to you is:
How do you handle this backup issue?
If I can take my focus off of making sure there is 100% uptime and backups if something crashes automatically, I can grow my business much faster.
Are there any tools out there that can monitor the uptime of my server (of my websites)?
Maybe an application that keeps pinging it throughout the day or some type of web-service?
I've been trying to find a decent and reasonably priced website/server monitoring service that alerts me by SMS and email if something goes down. I have 3 HTTP addresses and one HTTPS I'd like to check in 5 minute intervals.

I think that a Monitor service that do a test every 30 minutes dont cause any inpact, but if the interval on check test is every 1 minute.

While every decent host claims 99.99% uptime, its amazing why most rather almost all hosting companies fail to display the related statistics from independent source on their sites.

The command top don't show special process which explain my problem. I don't understand how a process can kill my memory but not immediatly but from reboot to after 4 or 5 hours uptime.
I am shopping around for a new dedicated server and am running into sites that offer 100% Uptime guarantees.
Is 100% uptime possible? Wouldn't that mean that they never reboot their server, or never perform specific maintenance/updates on the server?

A web will be down due to many problems, like disk failure, web services dead etc. even ISP offers 100% network uptime SLA. So, my question is how to keep a web 100% uptime?
for instance, when any server(either db server or web server, either hardware or software failure)dies, the redundant server may immediately and automatically take over the dead one.

Next, how is that .1% lost? Do their servers crash for a second?

(Less than 53 mins of downtime.) I'm looking for something like a link to a report on an independent monitor site (e.g. hyperspin, alertra, host-tracker) that has checked at least every 10 mins over that period.
We get a lot of requests for "reliable" hosting here, and I'm hoping this will be useful information - even if there are no responses!
I'm not interested in anecdotal reports or "near misses" - feel free to post them in a different thread, but not here, please.

I can't go more than 10 minutes into my shift each day without seeing a ticket where someone is complaining about or contesting the "99% uptime guarantee". One day a couple weeks ago, I had someone complaining about an Alertra report with 98.7% uptime, and how it was unsatisfactory for their site to be down for 10 minutes every month. What's more, it was just a stupid World of Warcraft forum that probably saw 5 visitors per day.
My co-workers and I have been debating this, though. What worth is there in 99% uptime? Is it something that can be achieved? If so, would people pay more for it? Would it be able to be marketed to the shared hosting community? Would people be willing to pay more for 100% uptime? Would the same answers apply?

If I were to choose an uptime reporting service such as siteuptime.com, hyperspin.com or site24x7.com, what would you recommend that I monitor? Obviously HTTP, FTP, POP3 and MySQL, but anything else? Do these services monitor the server load also?
Also, is it a good idea to display these stats publicly?
