Setting Up Private Nameservers For Reseller
Jun 3, 2007
I have a VPS plan with DirectAdmin and 3 IPs and I wanted to setup private nameservers for two reseller accounts on my plan.
I have the first IP assigned to the server and the other two as the nameservers for my vps.
So with no free IPs, how would I setup private nameservers for my two reseller accounts? Add six IPs (one for each account and two for nameservers for each) or is there a way to use the three I have to setup my resellers?

I have a dedicated server running WHM 11 Accelerated/ Cpanel
Main IP: 111.11.111.11
DNS1: 222.22.222.22
DNS2: 333.33.333.33
I will be hosting/ building my own sites on the box so I want to assign
each site dedicated IP and custom nameservers.
I have created a base package, now I have managed to create the setup
I want 2 different ways what I need to know is am I right/ wrong, which one
is the best way and if there is a better way.
I create an account in WHM, click the reseller option while doing so with
dedicated IP. So now I have a cpanel/reseller account with
DNS Zone: [url]/ Dedicated IP: 444.44.444.44
In WHM I click DNS Zone / Add a DNS Zone
Add IP: 555.55.555.55
Add DNS A Zone 1 ns1.[url]
Select Reseller
Save
Add IP: 666.66.666.66
Add DNS A Zone 2 ns2.[url]
Select Reseller
Save
now I have 3 zones & 3 IP
[url]- 444.44.444.44
[url]- 555.55.555.55
[url]- 666.66.666.66
The second way I do it is to use the cpanel accounts IP as 1 of the nameservers and end up like this:
now I have 3 zones & 2 IP
[url] - 444.44.444.44
[url]- 444.44.444.44
[url]- 555.55.555.55

Just got a new dedicated box (Fedora 5/CPanel/WHM). I didn't realize I had to set up my own nameservers with it. Definitely not a subject I am well versed in. Anyone know where I can find out how to get started?

I have the domain name "www.citedata.net"
With this domain name, I registered the nameservers:
"ns1.citedata.net" >> 208.109.30.9
"ns2.citedata.net" >> 208.109.30.11
I am using Plesk 8.1 and here is how I had setup the DNS information in the Plesk control panel:
PHP Code:
208.109.30.9 / 24 PTR citedata.net.citedata.net. NS ns1.citedata.net.citedata.net. NS ns2.citedata.net.citedata.net. A 208.109.30.9citedata.net. MX (10) mail.citedata.net.ftp.citedata.net. CNAME citedata.net.mail.citedata.net. A 208.109.30.9ns1.citedata.net. A 208.109.30.9ns2.citedata.net. A 208.109.30.11srv01.citedata.net. A 208.109.30.9webmail.citedata.net. A 208.109.30.9www.citedata.net. CNAME citedata.net.
On the same VPS I then have the domain name "www.citemedia.ca" registered, and it points to the namesevers "ns1.citedata.net" and "ns2.citedata.net".
The DNS setup in Plesk for this domain looks like this:
PHP Code:
208.109.30.9 / 24 PTR citemedia.ca.citemedia.ca. NS ns1.citedata.net.citemedia.ca. NS ns2.citedata.net.citemedia.ca. A 208.109.30.9citemedia.ca. MX (10) mail.citemedia.ca.ftp.citemedia.ca. CNAME citemedia.ca.lists.citemedia.ca. CNAME citemedia.ca.mail.citemedia.ca. A 208.109.30.9webmail.citemedia.ca. A 208.109.30.9www.citemedia.ca. CNAME citemedia.ca.
However, when I run a DNS report on the domain www.citemedia.ca, I get an error, AND my website is not accessable via. HTTP right now (check it out).
Here is the DNS report: [url]
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is done wrong with my DNS setup?
also, www.citemedia.ca is using a shared IP address (208.109.30.9).

I currently have two sets of nameservers on my box.
ns1.defaultnameservers.com
ns2.defaultnameservers.com
and
ns1.secondnameservers.com
ns2.secondnameservers.com
However when I go to setup a new account in WHM, the nameservers are always set to the default ones.
How can I select the second set of nameservers to be used on a new account?

I have recently just purchased an unmanaged vps from poundhost. I have never used a vps before so we shelled out for a WHM control panel! The issue now is that we do not have a nameserver set up or any main domain to use as a nameserver.
We have the main IP address and two additional IP's given to us by poundhost, how do I use these to start hosting and managing websites?

In previous posts in this forum I was talking about having each server have an internal and external network connection but people point out that as they were load balanced it was a bad setup
I am now looking at setting up a VPN to access the internal servers that are load balanced. Does and one have any recommendations for good tutorials or sorftware that I can use on debian?

I have a dedicated server, and WHM cPanel
I have a registered domain with oneandone (mydomain)
So what I want is nameservers, ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com when people are viewing any of the sites on my server.
Basically i need to know, step by step on how to, do this, please I have read all the guides but they dont say exactly how oneandone point to my server, I think I have done most stuff on the server side.
So I want a site mydomain2.com they can change their nameservers to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com and it links to my server.
I think i have only 1 IP with my dediated server.

I am currently with the planet and am happy with them, however as part of a new venture I need to gather a list of hosts as well as the planet that will be able to cater to the ventures needs and go to tender with the requirements.
ThePlanet offer something called a virtual rack. This is cheaper than renting a dedicated rack, allows for Gb networking but doesnt not allow for a SAN. Do other providers offer something similar? The cost of putting a machine on the virtual rack is not that much more expensive than just renting the machine. I guess there isn't too much to these set-ups to be fair.
If not, then we are looking for dedicated racks, with the ability to host a SAN at some point, but starting off with say 3 servers (2 web servers, 1 storage server with raid5 6Tb of hdd). These servers will be dealing with network cameras although I don't think that many will be streaming at once but the network capacity does need to be there.
Who's door should I be knocking on to find out some prices?
One final thing, should I bother looking for co-lo providers as well? We are in the Uk but not precious about our host being in the same country at all (it would be nice but uk prices are ££). Really, all we would be able to do with co-lo is buy the hardware outright to save price as we are not interested in looking after the hardware.

Will the nameservers work if the nameservers are pointed to a parking page?
For example:
I need to change my nameservers to ns1.mywebhost.com and ns2.mywebhost.com
(nameservers are made up)
These nameservers are from my web hosting service provider. When I visit the nameservers, it shows up a parking page from a domain parking service (let's say NameDrive parking page)
Will the nameservers function correctly and will my websites work? I have this question because usually the nameservers that I use, they always point to a CP page or something like that rather than a parking page.

We have about 3 resellers on one server and all of a sudden, when I log in to whm and click "Show Reseller Accounts", all accounts show under root.. What's even strager, is that under package colum, it says "undefined"
However, when I click "list accounts", all accounts show and they are properly setup up with the correct package and owner (not all root.. They also show to which reseller they belong).
how to fix the problem when I click "Show Reseller Accounts"?

Will domains still function if they have differing nameservers at the registry from what they do on the server side? i.e. domain1.com pointing to ns1/2.example.com at the registry but on the server the DNS zone has it as ns1/2.example2.com, baring in mind both sets of nameservers are pointing at the same server.

I have purchased a reseller account from www.reseller.net (not real names) They provide me with ns1.reseller.net and ns2.reseller.net, as well as the two associated ip addresses. They tell me to use these 2 ip addresses to set up my own custom nameservers.
I want my own nameservers - ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. Tech support at www.reseller.net tells me thay cannot help me. They tell me to go to the company where I purchased and manage the domain name www.mydomain.com.
I do, and find the control panel page where I -CREATE NAME SERVER-. This I do, and I use the above mentioned ip addresses. This seems to work. When I go back to this control panel page the next day, the entries I made are still there. Yet, I cannot "ping" my nameservers.
Now what? I have tried "google-ing" and not being a super-tech, I get lost. It appears that I must make some changes in my WHM, (I have a WHM...), but I have no access to any "Server" settings.
I have another reseller account with a totally different company, and when I asked them to set up custom nameservers, they just "did it" for me. Again, the hosting company was not related to the domain registering company.

I am experimenting with setting up my first unmanaged dedicated server.
I have directadmin as a cp.
I have 5 separate IP's available to me.
I went to my domain registrar and set up host as ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com using my first two IP's that are available.
My question now is what is the best way to use my three remaining IP's? Do I set them up as completely different domain nameservers ie. ns1.otherdomain.com etc.? Out of those three, I thought you need two IP's per nameserver domain? Is that wrong thinking?
I don't want any relationship shown in a whois dns info between the ips.
