Setting Up Private Nameservers For Reseller

Jun 3, 2007

I have a VPS plan with DirectAdmin and 3 IPs and I wanted to setup private nameservers for two reseller accounts on my plan.

I have the first IP assigned to the server and the other two as the nameservers for my vps.

So with no free IPs, how would I setup private nameservers for my two reseller accounts? Add six IPs (one for each account and two for nameservers for each) or is there a way to use the three I have to setup my resellers?

WHM Cpanel Private Nameservers Dedicated IP

May 18, 2009

I have a dedicated server running WHM 11 Accelerated/ Cpanel

Main IP: 111.11.111.11
DNS1: 222.22.222.22
DNS2: 333.33.333.33

I will be hosting/ building my own sites on the box so I want to assign
each site dedicated IP and custom nameservers.

I have created a base package, now I have managed to create the setup

I want 2 different ways what I need to know is am I right/ wrong, which one
is the best way and if there is a better way.

I create an account in WHM, click the reseller option while doing so with
dedicated IP. So now I have a cpanel/reseller account with

DNS Zone: [url]/ Dedicated IP: 444.44.444.44

In WHM I click DNS Zone / Add a DNS Zone

Add IP: 555.55.555.55
Add DNS A Zone 1 ns1.[url]
Select Reseller
Save

Add IP: 666.66.666.66
Add DNS A Zone 2 ns2.[url]
Select Reseller
Save

now I have 3 zones & 3 IP
[url]- 444.44.444.44
[url]- 555.55.555.55
[url]- 666.66.666.66

The second way I do it is to use the cpanel accounts IP as 1 of the nameservers and end up like this:

now I have 3 zones & 2 IP
[url] - 444.44.444.44
[url]- 444.44.444.44
[url]- 555.55.555.55

List Of Dedicated Providers With Private Or Virtual Private Racks

Sep 4, 2008

I am currently with the planet and am happy with them, however as part of a new venture I need to gather a list of hosts as well as the planet that will be able to cater to the ventures needs and go to tender with the requirements.

ThePlanet offer something called a virtual rack. This is cheaper than renting a dedicated rack, allows for Gb networking but doesnt not allow for a SAN. Do other providers offer something similar? The cost of putting a machine on the virtual rack is not that much more expensive than just renting the machine. I guess there isn't too much to these set-ups to be fair.

If not, then we are looking for dedicated racks, with the ability to host a SAN at some point, but starting off with say 3 servers (2 web servers, 1 storage server with raid5 6Tb of hdd). These servers will be dealing with network cameras although I don't think that many will be streaming at once but the network capacity does need to be there.

Who's door should I be knocking on to find out some prices?

One final thing, should I bother looking for co-lo providers as well? We are in the Uk but not precious about our host being in the same country at all (it would be nice but uk prices are ££). Really, all we would be able to do with co-lo is buy the hardware outright to save price as we are not interested in looking after the hardware.

Will The Nameservers Work If The Nameservers Are Pointed To A Parking Page

May 26, 2008

Will the nameservers work if the nameservers are pointed to a parking page?
For example:

I need to change my nameservers to ns1.mywebhost.com and ns2.mywebhost.com

(nameservers are made up)

These nameservers are from my web hosting service provider. When I visit the nameservers, it shows up a parking page from a domain parking service (let's say NameDrive parking page)

Will the nameservers function correctly and will my websites work? I have this question because usually the nameservers that I use, they always point to a CP page or something like that rather than a parking page.

Nameservers

Oct 29, 2008

Will domains still function if they have differing nameservers at the registry from what they do on the server side? i.e. domain1.com pointing to ns1/2.example.com at the registry but on the server the DNS zone has it as ns1/2.example2.com, baring in mind both sets of nameservers are pointing at the same server.

Nameservers...what Do I Do Next?

Jul 22, 2007

I have purchased a reseller account from www.reseller.net (not real names) They provide me with ns1.reseller.net and ns2.reseller.net, as well as the two associated ip addresses. They tell me to use these 2 ip addresses to set up my own custom nameservers.

I want my own nameservers - ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. Tech support at www.reseller.net tells me thay cannot help me. They tell me to go to the company where I purchased and manage the domain name www.mydomain.com.

I do, and find the control panel page where I -CREATE NAME SERVER-. This I do, and I use the above mentioned ip addresses. This seems to work. When I go back to this control panel page the next day, the entries I made are still there. Yet, I cannot "ping" my nameservers.

Now what? I have tried "google-ing" and not being a super-tech, I get lost. It appears that I must make some changes in my WHM, (I have a WHM...), but I have no access to any "Server" settings.

I have another reseller account with a totally different company, and when I asked them to set up custom nameservers, they just "did it" for me. Again, the hosting company was not related to the domain registering company.

Best Way To Set Up My Nameservers

Dec 7, 2007

I am experimenting with setting up my first unmanaged dedicated server.

I have directadmin as a cp.

I have 5 separate IP's available to me.

I went to my domain registrar and set up host as ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com using my first two IP's that are available.

My question now is what is the best way to use my three remaining IP's? Do I set them up as completely different domain nameservers ie. ns1.otherdomain.com etc.? Out of those three, I thought you need two IP's per nameserver domain? Is that wrong thinking?

I don't want any relationship shown in a whois dns info between the ips.

Nameservers Set Up In WHM

Aug 7, 2007

I just have a question on setting up Nameservers in WHM. Is it necessary to add an "A" entry to the name servers, and if so, do I need to do so on both nameservers, or just the first one?

ns1.mysite.com
ns2.mysite.com

What's the reason/ necessarily for adding a A entry to a nameserver, and can it be skipped?

MediaLayer And Private Cgi-bin

Apr 6, 2008

I am in the process of building a database-driven website. The main purpose of the site is really for me to improve my PHP and MySQL, but I will be writing a forum and offer blogs to users, as well as the main point of the site, which is to allow users to upload text-based artwork (ie. stories, poems, etc). I don't expect the site to use up that much bandwidth (assuming my code is clean) or space, as I don't expect it to grow that large. Like I said, it's mainly a learning exercise.

Anyway, the point is, I am looking for a host. I am currently with DreamHost but am having a lot of trouble creating a custom php.ini (because I know absolutely no PERL and am just starting to learn shell commands). The main host I'm considering is MediaLayer. They advertise on their website that you have a private cgi-bin directory, but it was unclear whether this directory would have a private php.ini. This is pretty important for me as I don't have the skills (yet) to do anything too clever like what is required at DreamHost to change it.

Is anyone here a current or former MediaLayer customer? Is the php.ini in the cgi-bin? I know that DownTownHost have private cgi-bins, but the php-ini is not there.

I had a look on the forums but, although I found mostly good general feedback about MediaLayer, I couldn't find anything that specifically addressed the creation of a custom php.ini file.

Private Rack

Mar 12, 2008

Our server count with The Planet only seems to be increasing as of late and I'm now starting to drive myself nuts with bandwidth counts, costs, etc.

My main concern at the moment is our total bandwidth. While we might have a server with a 2500GB limit only use 50% we might have a 1500GB limit use 200%. I understand that any overages are our own fault, etc but there must be a way for us to combine all bandwidth across all servers!

Is it possible for The Planet or any of the other big boys to provide private racks with pooled bandwidth without going colo?

Offshore/Private VPS

Aug 15, 2008

I have very specific needs for a VPS provider that can host a reverse engineered game server (NOT WoW) I want to run. I will not be using BitTorrent or IRC or the like, but I want to run an emulator that may or may not fall into DMCA reverse engineering issues (the legal implications just aren't all together clear with the DMCA). I just don't want to have to deal with getting unplugged constantly over something that is not illegal. I won't be hosting any copyrighted material or the like.

Here are my needs:

Windows 2003 Based VPS
384-512MB RAM upgradable if needed
10GB Disk space (Don't really need even that much)
150GB+ per month transfer
a good connection with semi-low latency (doesn't need to be as low as a counter-striker server or the like but needs to be solid and fast)
A control panel of some type is fine, but I only really need Remote Desktop access

Other than that I am pretty open. Country of origin doesn't matter too much and I would only like the company to be somewhat reliable. I want as cheap as possible of course, but I would be willing to spend ~$50 USD per month.
