Selling Your IT Department On ISAPI

Oct 2, 2007

I update the corporate website for my company. Our server is IIS and when I need a 301, I have to send a request to IT to do it, as our pages are static .html and .shtml (SSI) and using javascript redirects is not ideal for SEO.

A redesign we're going to be deploying, will include the shuffling of several pages/directories and redirecting of quite a few URL's. This fact alone seems to provide a good argument convincing IT that this is a good idea. From what I've read here and elsewhere, heliontech's solution seems to be the way to go.

Since this is 3rd party, I'm looking to have further leverage to explain my case on behalf of using this. Are there benchmarks and data that support the reliability of this method versus the straight MS stuff?

Also, I'm not real tech savvy on the server end, but I was told that our corporate site and application sites may reside on the same box and that applying the ISAPI rewrite would affect those as well. This would obviously make it a "no sell" with my IT colleagues.

Would sites residing on the same server be globally affected by the ISAPI? If so, is there a way to circumvent this and just set the ISAPI for the one site?

Host Department

Jan 9, 2007

give me a review of Host Department. I searched the web for the review and I get mixed response. Some says it is the best, they provide top notch technical support..... On the contrary the rest says tat it is the worst hosting service, that they move their server almost every month, they have the worst and most inexperienced technical support.... I am really confused, I had talked to their customer service and they have been really polite. I just asked them whether they provide GD2 and whether mod_rewrite was enabled or not, so I couldn't test their technical knowledge. Can anyone plz tell me your experience with them.

I just contacted them asking about these comments, and I was told that the server movement is an old story and tat it wont be happening again for a long time...and tat they will be having a max of 300 domains per server (I have heard tat they had about 1300 customers x unlimited domain once)...Well I should say they are real slow in replying to the question...takes almost 2-3 mins to respond to each question.

Terrible Singtel EXPAN's Abuse/network Department (in HK)

Mar 20, 2007

Usually, I won't start a thread. But this time, I think I will share my 1-year experience, so people will know how Singtel EXPAN (HK) network/abuse department works.

Firstly, their network is extremely good most of the time. I only made a few complaints about network (3-4 minor problems... except the one caused by the earthquake)

So, I am a happy customer for first 10 months. However, my nightmare starts 2 months ago:

1. Early Feb, the abuse/network team received a phising scam (AOL) complaints against a site on a dedicated server customer (which sold hosting as a part time job). So, a technican has forward us the email and then phoned me about that. I immediately forwarded it to my customer.... After 30 minutes, the technican phoned me again and told me that they had blocked the IP since I didn't fix it.
Finally, this customer cancelled next month. [EWM ticket #3143589]

2. After 10-20 days, we got a new customer that want to send mailing list. I said as long as you responded to all complaints and the rate isn't high, you can use the server for mailing list. Within 20 days, we got few complaints via email (in standard template) ... so I forward them to my customers and they removed them promptly. Then, one day, a technician phoned me and told me they will block the IP at 5:00pm... but they phoned me at 2:00pm... So, I begged them to extend the deadline to 24-48 hours because the customer come from US... After a day, another spam complaint (from this customer's previous HK provider )... so, I turned off the switch port of his server immediately.

This time, I really appreciate the extended deadline. However, after this incident, their patient were all gone.

3. Last week, Microsoft privacy team reported that one of the site is linking to privated copy of Windows Vista (which is hosted in Radidshare.de) and providing license key/ key generator.

So, the technician phoned me and give me 30 minutes. I said the site is a popular forum with 130K+ members and 10K+ members online... sometimes, somethings may be overlooked. This time, no extended time.... Luckily, the forum owner is online in MSN. So, he deleted the thread immediately and I reported it to Microsoft and Singtel. Microsoft Anti-privacy team did reply and thank us while Singtel kept silent. [MS Ref. 878XX]

4. 2 days ago, someone "complained" about "Spam Activities" on 1 server. The complains are about 2 URLs in a server were redirecting to a sites that was infected by virus/ was hosting virus. Again they phoned me and told me to fix within 30 minutes or they suspend my network.... This time, I can't contact the owner and we don't have access to the server... so I suspended this server. [??No email ticket reference??]

5. Yesterday, a technician phoned me again and told me to fix a spam complaint within 30 minutes. But, this time, the complain is so short that I can paste it here:
--------------------------------------------
Subject: UNDER ASSAULT BY SPAM!

XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX has been assaulting my formmail script for

days. Please make it stop!
--------------------------------------------

Since my skill level is too low, I can only think of 1 solution..... [EWM ticket # 3188660]

---- personal opinion -----
Singtel EXPAN DC (Shatin) has a good infra-structure and helpful onsite technicians. But, their abuse/ network department is a joke. (Just like an over-budget police department in SimCity. ) That make, their colocation is not suitable for any hostings/ dedicated server providers. It is not recommended to anyone that doesn't sit next to the phone 24 hours a day.

IIS & ISAPI Redirects...anything Faster Than The GUI

Apr 10, 2007

So I have been reduced, I am a firm *nix Apache user, to using IIS along with ISAPI for redirection at work. Now I can setup the redirection(s) just fine using the GUI, but I am a *nix man and doing this through the GUI is SLOW! That is when it has to be done on 3 servers at a time plus I can only access those servers through a Citrix environment.

And I need to be adding redirects many times a week. Is there any way to setup ISAPI redirects from a command line? Google has offered me nothing.

Apache :: ISAPI DLL Crashing

Jan 29, 2013

i have custom dll built with Delphi that used to work on IIS 5/6/7. After i migrated to apache, DLL started to crash after an hour or two and i have to restart the server. The error was something about bad header. Since the developer says DLL is handling reponses OK and i can't get anything with debug logging on apache side can i run DLL as CFG/FastCGI (not that versed with apache so maybe this question does not make sense)?

Isapi Rewrite For Expression Engine

Oct 3, 2008

have to say the EE forums have been a help to some extent.

I'm trying to rid my Expression Engine site of the index.php? part in my URLs using ISAPI REWRITE on IIS.

I've got [ISAPI_Rewrite]
RewriteRule (/(?:site|member|search|Pd{1,8}).*) /index.php?$1 [I,L]

which removes the index.php but not the? part.

ISAPI Rewrite Filter - Alternatives To RewriteMap

May 14, 2009

we're using IIS 5.0 which doesn't have any flexible support for rewriting URLs which include parameters (AFAIK, anyway). We're currently testing an ISAPI Rewrite Plugin, which emulates the syntax and behaviour of mod_rewrite, which is why I felt this forum category to be the most appropriate for this post.

Our URLs at the moment look like:-

[url]where 'hg' is an instance of a key. In this particular example, we wish to rewrite our URL to read [url]homegarden' where 'homegarden' is a value of that respective key.

Since the value 'homegarden' isn't present in our current URL, we need some way to associate this value with it's relevant key, by mapping one to another. The ideal solution in this case would be to use RewriteMap, however the ISAPI plugin doesn't support this directive.

One other solution, that I've seen here is to use the 'homegarden' value as the key instead. However, due to the lack of flexibility of our system, this isn't possible.

Another method of achieving this is to hard-code a RewriteRule for every instance of a key, but this solution has obvious performance drawbacks (we have around 400 categories)

So, at the moment I'm out of ideas, which is why I thought I'd try and rack your brains for suggestions. An ideal scenario would be to use something like RewriteCond (which is supported by the plugin) to attach a file which would contain the key/value map.

The current supported directives are :-

RewriteRule
RedirectRule
RewriteHeader
RewriteCond
RewriteLog
RewriteLogLevel
RewriteFilterPriority
IterationLimit
MaxMatchCount
StrictParsing

Even if it's not possible using one of the above, maybe someone can point me to solution involving a method other than using this particular plugin?

ASP.net 3.5 / ISAPI-Rewrite / MsSQL Shared Hosting

Mar 19, 2008

Since about 2002 I have constantly had my own co-located and then dedicated box. Before that, the only paid host I ever used was verio.net. Now that I sold off most of my sites, it is time to move to a smaller, shared hosting plan.

My question is can anyone suggest a good hosting plan? I do not need a lot of space or bandwidth, but I do require a few things:

- ASP.net 3.5 is a huge plus, but 2.0 is do-able

- At least one msSQL database

- Daily backups is also a huge plus. I don't need this second, but eventually I will want it.

- Good technical support is a must. I have dealt with to many companies even with my dedicated hosting that offered horrible tech support. A three day wait on a question is not acceptable. Phone support is a plus, but a 24 hour reply on an email is enough.

- ISAPI-Rewrite, or an equivalent is a must. I rewrite my URL's for SE rankings, as I believe everyone should, so the ability to host a rewrite script is a must. Though I use ISAPI-Rewrite, if their is an equivalent that is do-able.

- Need to be able to run at least (2) domains. My main company domain and then a second domain which is basically a landing page. In future I need a 3rd domain added, so ability to upgrade or add on a domain cheaply is a must too.

If you own a hosting company that matches this, or can suggest any please do so. If you suggest and they offer a referral program feel free to let me know your referral code as you obviously deserve the credit for suggesting the company.

IIS Isapi Dll Connection Reset - Recyclying Pools

Nov 10, 2008

I'm using IIS 6.0 and an isapi dll created in Delphi, and I'm getting an error which I cannot understand.

At some point when I make a request for this file I get an error in Firefox ("The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"). At the same time http error log is full of "Connection_Abandoned_By_AppPool" messages. After this happens, there is almost nothing I can do - I tried recycling the application pool, then I tried restarting the IIS server, and finally I reset the computer - NONE of this helped.

The only thing that resolves the issue is to recompile the dll and replace it (the source is absolutely the same). After that everything works fine.

I have a separate App pool for this dll (not executing in DefaultAppPool). At first, I thought that the problem lies in "Rapid fail protection" so I have disabled it, but the problem hapenned again.

The biggest issue is that this problem hapenned exactly 4 times in two months. It's very rare, and very hard to debug.

Finally, I have discovered on thing that could lead to the solution (with somebody's help :-)). I have enabled recycling for this pool every 2 hours. Looking at the event log in windows, I have found out that the problem always occured after the pool was recycled. So, each time this problem hapenned I have this logged in Event log as an information message:

"A worker process with process id of '2312' serving application pool 'PromjenePool' has requested a recycle because the worker process reached its allowed processing time limit. ".

After that, in my log there is a series (hundreds, thousands) of error messages, two or three in a second, first of them coming just a few seconds after information about recycling. The warning messages are like this:

"A process serving application pool 'PromjenePool' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '2604'. The process exit code was '0x1'. "

The first thing that my dll does is that it logs that it has been initalized to a log file. After this happens, there is no trace of initialization in my log file. So, probably dll is never loaded, or it crashes when it tries to open the file.

So, to resume, I have recycle periods of 120 mins, and about 300-400 recycles happen without any problem. After one recycle, I just keep getting error "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading", httperr log contains loads of ""Connection_Abandoned_By_AppPool" messages, and event log is logging that process serving my pool is terminating unexpectedly. The most bizzare thing is that recycling the dll, restarting iis or computer won't help, the only thing that surely helps is to recompile the dll (same source).

Just to add - if it can help - all dll is basically doing is connecting via TCP sockets to a data feed, constantly reads data and publishes it through dll. There is no connection to database, just sockets and appending messages to local file.

Selling Blades As Dedicated

Oct 13, 2008

Does anyone sell (lease/rent etc) individual Blades as dedicated servers? I'm planning to branch into more rack dense colo services and wondered what the WHT opinion on this matter is.

The way I see it, blades offer more redundancy, quicker provisioning and replacement in cases of failure, and lower costs, all of which would be passed to the customers.

I would of course fully disclose the fact that they are blades, just wondering if it would matter to any buyers..

How Good Is Using Whm/cpanel For Selling Hosting

Jul 12, 2007

I am doing some part-time work for a small web design company that is hoping to get some extra revenue by selling hosting to its customers after it designs the sites for them.

They wanted to know what I thought about it, and so far I've said that it seems like getting a dedicated server (from a larger provider) for about $200/month would be a good fit. If they charged $20/month then they'd make it up after only about 10 customers, and they have many more than that. And with a dedicated server they could put a lot more than 10 accounts on the site.

The thing they're worried about is having to actually administer all those accounts. The sense is that their clients are pretty low maintenance, but if you give one malicious user an FTP account into the server, they are (understandably) worried about that person's ability to affect the entire server.

The dedicated server provider I have in mind provides WHM/cPanel for a relatively small fee, and my thought is that this could address that problem.

So (having only used WHM/cPanel in passing myself), what I'm wondering is, is this the sort of thing where they could give users access simply by giving their customers a cPanel account, and not worry too much about security or configuration (keeping in mind that the dedicated host also has security people working)?

Selling A 4 Socket Enterprise Server

Jun 3, 2007

I have a somewhat unusual question for a hosting forum, but it seems to fit here reasonably well. I figure that anyone who does colo would know about buying and selling servers.

Right now, I have a very high-end system, basically a Sun V40z:
[url]

It is fully configured with processors, memory, but only has a single hard drive currently. The system comes with a built in management processor and OS; from the console you can boot/restart the server, check which DIMMs or processors are working (or failed), etc. It has been barely used, and is in mint condition.

I'm thinking about selling it, because I'd prefer a smaller, more compact server.

Where do you guys go to sell servers? Based on listings here, the server seems to sell in the range of 20K, with a warranty of sorts (30 days):
[url]

Obviously, I can provide no warranty, but I have pretty much the same configuration.

It's meant to be a pretty high-end database server, and I just don't need this many horsepower.

Ipower - Blatant Over Selling, Trying To Kick Me Off With Fake TOS

Dec 16, 2008

Ipower - blatant over selling, trying to kick me off with fake TOS

I am currently being ignored on live chat with Ipower.

They issued me with possibly the stupidest TOS violation imaginable. They claimed that I am using my web space for storing files which is not allowed - it must be site content. The links to the files are public on the site. They have admitted, actually admitted, that the TOS is fake. Yet they have just suspended my directories.

The real reason is because they are over selling disk space. Our contract gives me 2 Tb and I am daring to use 25% of that space. They have told me - straight out - they want me off their server because I am using too much of what I paid for.

Why do web hosts like Ipower believe that they can just ignore the law like this? It is false advertising, fraud and breach of contract. They have expressed their contempt for the law in plain English. What is it with these people? Why must I sue them to have this blatantly stupid matter resolved?
