SATA Drives :: Detected Within The BIOS But Not In CentOS
Feb 1, 2008
I installed 2 SATA raptors drives on my server. I formatted/partitioned one of the drives through WHM. After rebooting both drives disappeared. They are still detected within the BIOS but not in CentOS. It is possible that I installed a wrong driver or made a bad configuration change.
Server Info:
CentOS 4.6 64bit
cPanel/WHM
Motherboard: [url]OS is running on a 250GB IDE drive
2 SATA WD Raptors (That I am trying to get to work)

running new servers on 500GB+ hard drives, how are these drives performing when they become 50% full?
Can they properly be 50% or more utilized on a cPanel like server with 200+ acccounts?

Is there any way to use SATA harddrives instead of SCSI harddrives with a Dell Poweredge 2650? I purchased the Dell on the cheap. It came with one 36GB SCSI drive. Four more hotswap slots. No sleds/caddies/trays for additional drives, so I need those as well.
Looking at the market (eBay mainly) for used SCSI harddrives, it's pretty pricey to get drives of a decent size (73gb+, $50+ each). I would like to use SATA drives instead (get them brand new vs. used SCSI). Problem is this server does not have an embedded SATA controller, just the SCSI Perc3/DI controller. So maybe get a 3ware 8000 series SATA controller + sata drives + trays? Is that possible? There are no molex connectors inside the server. Power to the harddrives comes from the SCSI backplane.
The server will be just for my personal stuff (personal web site, DNS, etc), nothing mission critical. Just trying to save a few bucks buying cheap large capacity SATA drives vs. used smaller capacity SCSI drives.

I've got a 'virgin' machine from Nocster running CentOS 5, including a SATA drive (shows up as "SCSI").
It looks like it'll be a straight-forward install [url], but I wondered if anyone has had this exact combination before and if there are any problems I should expect? Given that it's a dedicated machine I don't have physical access to, I'm slightly paranoid about screwing up.

we've been testing CentOS 5.3 on Intel DG35EC board (G35+ICH8+82566 Gb NIC), and found that the write speed out of 7200rpm SATA-II drive, connected to on-board ICH8 controller, is consistently under 10MB/sec which is quite horrible!
the same set of hardware can get 100MB+/sec transfer rate with Debian 5.0 and FreeBSD 7.1, just not the CentOS5.3! it doesn't matter whether AHCI mode is selected in BIOS or not, and of course BIOS has been updated with latest version.

We are using a AdderLink IP which is connected to some AdderView Matrix KVM Switches.
The big problem is, that the AdderLink IP is quite slow switchting to the right screen resolution. This means, I have no chance to access the bios, because before I can press the DELL button to enter the bios, I have to syncronise the screen resolution to get access to the Keyboard and press the DELL button. But the syncronisation takes about 5 seconds and therefore I'm too late pressing the DELL button.
Now I search a better KVM-Over-IP box, which I can connect to my AdderView Matrix KVM Switches. It's very important, that I don't need to synchronise anything before I can use the keyboard.
Can someone recommend such a box which don't need to syncronize at all? Or how are other companies accessing the bios?

I'm currently in the process of ordering a new server and would like to throw another $50-$70 at the default SATA II 7k 250 GB to increase performance. The server will host a site similar to WHT (php, mysql, and some forum traffic ).
There are three options I can get for the price:
1. Add another SATA II 7k 250 GB and set up RAID 1
2. Add a 73GB 15k RPM SA-SCSI and put mySQL on it. No RAID.
3. Toss out the SATA II 7k and take two SATA 10k 150 GB instead. Put mySQL on one of them. No RAID.
Please keep in mind that the question is budget-related (I know I can get more if I spend an extra $200 but that's not what I want ). Which of the above will make me happiest?

I have a couple of Dell 1950s and in one of them, I have 2x Seagate 15K.5s that I purchased through Dell and I also have a spare sitting in my rack in case one goes bad, also from Dell.
I was going to be repurposing one of my other 1950s and was going to get two more 15K.5s for it, but wasn't planning on getting them through Dell (rip off?). This way, could still keep the same spare drive around in case a drive went bad in that system as well.
When I was talking to my Dell rep recently when purchasing another system, their hardware tech said you can't use non-Dell drives with Dell drives in the same RAID array because of the different firmware between them.
Anyone know if it is true? Anyone have any experience with using drives from Dell in conjunction with the same model drives from a third party retailer?

We recently setup a server with 4 gigs of RAM and installed Fedora core 7 32-bit version in it. After installing the OS, I have found that Fedora is able to detect only 2 GB and not 4 GB of RAM. I installed the kernel-PAE and kernel-PAE-devel modules and restart the server and made sure that the the OS with the PAE switch starts at boot time. However, the OS still does not detect the 4 GB RAM. Any idea what else can be done apart from installing the 64-bit OS in the system?

I'm just working with my first dedicated server and also in the process of coding a new site. Anyway, I've gotten around to emailing users from scripts on my site (Java Servlet). Using Sendmail as the server (with default config) the emails are detected as spam by pretty much everything.
I'm looking for a complete list of things which need to be done to ensure an email isn't detected incorrectly as spam. I've read through various sites etc but haven't found a definitive list of things which should be done. I'm sure this would be helpful for other forum visitors too.
I'm NOT trying to send spam or anything like that but I haven't set up a dedicated server before.

I am using Merak Mail server 8.0.3 (Windows). From past 2 - 3 days many of my users are complaining their genuine mails are going to spam. The value set for antispam is 5 i.e. if antispam value is above it is detected as spam else not spam.
But from past few days which ever genuine mail is detected as spam I have found an very uncommon thing in it. It shows '10.4 FH_HAS_X Has X: header'

I have 2 reseller accounts with one provider, and in the last several days I have noticed that when you visit the site for the first time, my AV software detects a trojan on the site, but the code & html files are 100% clean!
I'm suspecting that there is something being injected into the scripts from the server daemons that's either running or something else.
Anyone have any suggestions?

mkdir /home/1
it created without any problems
and I used tcpdump and I got this:
<script type="text/javascript" src='jscripts/ips_ipsclass.js'></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src='jscripts/ipb_global.js'></script>

is that mean the server is infected? but these scripts are for the IPB forum board so why I still recieve this email?

I know there are a lot of experienced hardware guys on here, so I wanted some input on 1.5TB drives. Are they reliable enough to be used in non-mission critical storage servers? 99% of what we do is OEM (Dell) equipment, so I don't test raw hardware much these days.
I've read a lot of negative things about Seagate lately. Can anyone chime in with specific models they've had positive or negative experiences with from any vendor? Reading some reviews on the WD 1.5TB Caviar Black drives, there seems to be some weird issues with them going into a recovery cycle.
