7200 Rpm HDD Vs. 10k Rpm HDD Performance
How much faster is a 10k rpm HDD vs a 7200 rpm HDD in a server environment? IMO, a 7200 rpm HDD is much faster than 5400 rpm HDD when it comes down to desktop PCs.. Just wondering if it's worth upgrading to a 10k rpm HDD from a 7200 rpm HDD and losing about 1TB of storage as well... (Comparing specifically 2 750GB 16mb cache 7200rpm SATA 2 HDD RAID 1 with 2 150GB 16mb cache 10krpm HDD in RAID 1)

SATA 7k RAID 1 Vs. 2xSATA 10k Vs. SATA+SAS
I'm currently in the process of ordering a new server and would like to throw another $50-$70 at the default SATA II 7k 250 GB to increase performance. The server will host a site similar to WHT (php, mysql, and some forum traffic ). There are three options I can get for the price: 1. Add another SATA II 7k 250 GB and set up RAID 1 2. Add a 73GB 15k RPM SA-SCSI and put mySQL on it. No RAID. 3. Toss out the SATA II 7k and take two SATA 10k 150 GB instead. Put mySQL on one of them. No RAID. Please keep in mind that the question is budget-related (I know I can get more if I spend an extra $200 but that's not what I want ). Which of the above will make me happiest?

Disk Writes Extremely Slow On SATA RAID
I'm running into a problem with a relatively new (2 months old) server. I have just a few accounts on it, and I'm already noticing unusual loads, for the... load. After some benchmarking with bonnie++ (and plain old "dd") there is clearly a problem. Version 1.03b ------Sequential Output------ --Sequential Input- --Random- -Per Chr- --Block-- -Rewrite- -Per Chr- --Block-- --Seeks-- Machine Size K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP /sec %CP SERVER NAME 2G 9096 16 7725 2 2543 0 20609 32 621627 55 +++++ +++ Isn't a write-speed over 7MB/s reasonable to expect? Also look at the low CPU times... Anyway running the same test on a similar but older AND busier server showed much better results than this. In fact dd'ing a 1GB file from /dev/zero "finished" in about 10 seconds but then pegged the server at 99% iowait (wa) for a full three minutes (until done being written from cache I assume), bringing load to 15.00 That's all the info I have so far... the data center just replaced the card (which gave no errors) with no effect. Running these benchmark tests is about the extend of my hardware experience.

Cheapest SATA RAID Battery Backup Solution
I've recently put together a server in a hurry and overlooked an important aspect - data integrity after power loss. I'm using Linux software RAID-1 with two 150GB WD Raptors but I'm worried that data could be lost due to having write-back cache enabled without a battery backup unit. I would rather not disable the write-back cache for performance reasons. What is the cheapest way to get a battery backup solution for Linux software RAID? Do I have to use a hardware RAID card or do standalone battery backup units exist that can use existing motherboard SATA ports?

Drive Setup For VBulletin - 4 X SAS Vs SSD Vs Sata Raid-1
For a Vbulletin forum with up to 200 users online (only) but growing nicely and I want to be set for quite a while: I am going to use Nginx, XCache, PHP-FPM, FreeBSD, Gzip Currently using ~55 GB transfer with mod_deflate, all with dynamic traffic, little bits and pieces, no bigger files. I want to be able to push 500 GB transfer or so this way, or ~ 1000 users online, many searches from non-registered users, too I am looking at Q9550, 8GB, 4x73 SAS 10k Raid-10, $200 Webnx or i7 920, 12GB, 4x73 SAS 15k Raid-10, $250 Webnx or X3220, 8GB, X25-E SSD Intel, $300 Softlayer Am I too concerned about disk I/O? Should I save some money and settle for a 2xSATA Raid-1. Databases are < 2GB and would fit into the RAM

15K Rpm SAS Disks Greater Than 146 GB
Currently we're using HP servers with 4 hot-swap bays that hold 3.5" Seagate Cheetah 15K RPM SAS disks, which we can get in 300, 450, and 600 GB flavors. I'm looking at the HP DL380/385 models which use 2.5" SAS disks. About the only decent 15K RPM SAS disk I've found in 2.5" form is the Seagate Savvio, but it doesn't come any larger than 146 GB. Anyone know of another enterprise-class SAS disk that has all of the following attributes: 2.5", 15K RPM, SAS, and at least 300 GB? (Please, no 10K RPM or SATA recommendations like the WD Velociraptor. I won't consider anything that's not 15K RPM SAS.)

1 SCSI Vs 2 SATA
I currently have a Dell Poweredge 2650 from a few years back, it is running... 2x Xeon 2.4ghz 512K 3GB DDR266 RAM 1x73GB SCSI Back in the day this system cost $2000, now it's not worth close to that. So my plans were to dump this bad boy as an SQL server, seeing it has the SCSI backplane and 3GB of RAM, and SQL usually doesn't need as much CPU as a web server. Now my question, would it be better to use this server or would it be better to build a cheap Core 2 Duo with a RAID0 array with a few SATA drives? Before you start going off on RAID0, it doesn't matter to me because I am using clustering/failover so data will not be lost and no downtime will be received if the array fails. Basically what I want to know, is it worth it to keep this server and build upon it or would it be better to sell this server and look into spending an extra few hundred to build a new system with SATA RAID. I'm going by price/performance rather than reliability as I am using failover to let you know once again .

Nearline Sata Drive Performance
We have had some old dell 745n that had sata drives in them in the past. These are the only time we have ever used sata. The performance was terrible and we replaced the sata drives more times in over several years and we ever have with sas/scsi drives. We are looking to get some new disk backup boxes which we plan to go 600gb sas drives, but might be considering 1tb nearline sata from dell. I would like to hear from anyone using nearline sata and get feedback on performance and reliability overall. Also if you are using for backups, how many backup jobs are you able to run at the same time before performance drops?

SCSI, SAS Vs SATA II Reliability
is it really worth the money nowadays to put in SCSI or SAS instead of SATAII (single disk, non-raid here), IF reliability is the only concern (i.e. NOT i/o performance) during the usual 3 year life time of a server? Actually, I was pretty amazed by the sata reliability, in the past 3 years the only hdd failure was two sata on a mismatched mobo, which didn't support SATAII (a lot of read/write error, eventually died). Although we have 0% scsi and sas failure.

Are there any premade sata arrays that allow you to just pop in your own harddrives and don't cost thousands of dollars? SATA Cables - SC512L-260B
We just got in our first shipment of Supermicro SC512L-260B cases. We have been using much larger and more expensive 1u (or even 2U) cases, even for base servers. I wish we had went with this chassis a long time ago. My question is on the SATA cables. I know you can order the Supermicro CBL-0044 cable to allow connection to the hard drives in tight spaces, but these can be expensive or hard to find. I have a few coming, but does anyone have a source or know of a generic cable that will work? Or how do those of you that use this chassis route standard SATA cables? I see you might be able to go under the fan, but I'm not sure that is a good idea.

SATA Drives For A Dell Poweredge 2650
Is there any way to use SATA harddrives instead of SCSI harddrives with a Dell Poweredge 2650? I purchased the Dell on the cheap. It came with one 36GB SCSI drive. Four more hotswap slots. No sleds/caddies/trays for additional drives, so I need those as well. Looking at the market (eBay mainly) for used SCSI harddrives, it's pretty pricey to get drives of a decent size (73gb+, $50+ each). I would like to use SATA drives instead (get them brand new vs. used SCSI). Problem is this server does not have an embedded SATA controller, just the SCSI Perc3/DI controller. So maybe get a 3ware 8000 series SATA controller + sata drives + trays? Is that possible? There are no molex connectors inside the server. Power to the harddrives comes from the SCSI backplane. The server will be just for my personal stuff (personal web site, DNS, etc), nothing mission critical. Just trying to save a few bucks buying cheap large capacity SATA drives vs. used smaller capacity SCSI drives.

Win2k3: NTDetect Failed And SATA Hard Disk
trying to get my Win2k3 Standard R2 server to work. Problem: I did some Windows update around 3am this morning but during the update process. I lost Remote desktop connection as my machine is do several attempts to connect with the remote server. I cancel the attempt after several try. I figure i can remote desktop back in again if i wait for a bit but I couldn't re-establish the connection with my remote server. So, I drove to the Datacenter to check it out and it turn out the machine have rebooted and I'm stuck with "NTDetect failed" error message. After some googling, I was trying to fix this error by copying NTLDR and NTDetect.COM into C: but when i tried to use the Win2k3 CD to go into Windows Setup and repair. I got an error message telling me that "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer...". After some googling, I found the two Maxtor SATA hard disks might be the problem and one soultion that i found was to disable the SATA or set it to IDE since the motherboard have nvida RAID controller onboard. I check the BIOS and the RAID is set to disabled and then i tried to disable SATA and only enable IDE. It still give me the same error message about not able to find any hard disk. I'm on my last rope here. I'm short of reformatting the hard disk and do a fresh reinstall but I will like to avoid this. Does anyone know if cancel Remote desktop connection attempt during Windows update process cause this NTdetect failed problem or something else that might related to my hardware. I can assure you that two SATA hard disks shown on BIOS. The soultion to NTDecte failed problem seem to be just copying NTLDR and NTdectect.com into C: but since i can't even get to Repair mode during Windows setup with no disk install error. Can someone recommand how to solve this problem? The motherboard that i use is ASUS M2N-MX SE AM2 NVIDIA GeForce6100 / nForce430 and the BIOS is American Megatrends Inc.
