Restricting Access To Webspace

I am planning on getting a Web-Hosting account next week for a website I am building.
Some questions related to this...
1.) I believe that if you edit the .htaccess file in Apache, you can create a Log-In page of sorts to prevent people from going beyond your domain/IP address without logging in.
But can I do that with a web-host like GoDaddy on a shared account?
2.) Is there a way to restrict visitors to a certain folder?
Lets say I want a "MyDevDirectory" just for me, but a "TesterDirectory" for people on SitePoint who are nice enough to look at my code.

I have a set of confidential files that I want to make accessible over the internet to members overseas.
Members will access the file links on a secure web application.
I want to restrict access to the files so that they only open when the user clicked them from the web application. ie. if they paste the url into a browser it should not open the file.
I managed to do this in Apache, but I need to do it in IIS - is it possible?

I have an ubuntu Server install running the latest Apache. This is all running on a Virtualbox VM.
I have 3 sites configured. 2 of them are set-up with DNS point from the outside world and are working just fine.
When I go to domain1.com and domain2.com the right pages are displayed. The 3rd host is the default host and when I go to the local ip address 192.168.0.x of the server the correct folder is being displayed.
So all being well I wanted to run MediaWiki on that local default host. limiting access to people who are on the local subnet. Seems easy enough I will change the "allow from all" statement for that virtual to allow from 192.68.0.0/255.255.255.0 and add the deny.
But my issue is the the alias
Alias /mediawiki /var/lib/mediawiki
is being added to all 3 sites
so domain1.com/mediawiki domain2.com/mediawiki are also displaying the wiki pages.
This alias was added in the /etc/mediawiki/apache.conf by the mediawiki install. The instructions I had were to then go in and uncomment to make it available.

cheap-ish place to host a PROTOTYPE website. We're going to need php + mysql, but we're going to need to have more control such as root SSH access.
Here is the list of what we need to start with:
SSH access
PHP 5
Java
MYSQL 4 or 5
Apache 2
SendMail
Any ISP recommendations?
For now this is just a prototype, and it will NOT get hammered with
traffic. But we do need an outfit that is efficient and reliable.

i have already an dedicated server, but with an strong traffic limit, so i search webspace (filespace) for my thumbnail images, the space is only for the images, no php scripts or databases are needed just imagespace.
the hoster should tolerate adult content, and have no problem with 500gb bandwith per month. Paypal should be accepted as payment.
its important for me that the webhoster follow their offers and dont kick me if i use high bandwith....

The speed of my webspace is very slowly from time to time.
Are the server from leaseweb faster?

when I try to activate a new subscription (webspace) comes out an error as attached image, which tells me that there is already a user account and a DNS record, but in reality do not exist and therefore can not delete them.

Been a Plesk user since 8.6, and have to admit the new interface in 10.x and 11.x is taking some getting used to.
First gripe is why is the dropdown list of Webspaces not in any order? I have lots of different webspaces for different customers, and its just in one unorganized list.
Can we change this?

Plesk 11.5.30 all latest updated installed is used with Power-User view on an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 Bit system.
The Plesk Interface is working well in general. But if the customer clicks on "Webspaces" -> Add Webspace they run in a:
[URL] ....
Browser:
502 Bad Gateway
nginx
To try to fix it with:
/usr/local/psa/admin/bin/nginxmng --disable
/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all
/etc/init.d/apache2 restart
/etc/init.d/ngnix restart ( does not work anyway since the customer is not using it ) -> ngnix_enable=no
Which did not work ( ngnix is and was not active )
In the log /var/log/sw-cp-server/error.log
we can see:

I'm migrating all of my websites form one server to a new one. And everything is working as planned with the plesk migration manager. But with my last website i'm having some problems and getting this error:

I have just used rsync to backup a dedicated server to a new cloud server. I put the files in a plesk webspace 'Backup' folder for ease of use (gui). In File Manager for that webspace it shows the folder user and group as root, which is obviously correct as rsync maintains users etc?
Thats fine, I just wanted to be able to back them up along with the rest of the server configuration and content.
However, when I run backup it says "For security reasons, backing up is performed on behalf of subscription's system user. This system user has no read access to:" and "So it was not backed up. All other data was backed up successfully. To fix this issue you may grant access read/write to the file or directory for system user "(username)" or "apache"."
I don't know how to give read/write access to the system user? Through file manager there is no option to change permissions.

I found a great little app called ID Shutdown Manager which bascially lets you do stuff like wake on LAN, Shutdown, Log Off etc.
The App also has a cgi script which you can call from a web server so you get a web interface to the program.
This is exactly my reason for getting the app as I just wanted to host a web page where I could login from the internet and wake on lan my media PC.
Ok so...
The app gives you all the iis or apache setup instructions and tells you to place the cgi script which is actually a .exe into the scripts folder and then enable basic authentication for it.
Done.
So if I navigate to <SERVER>/scripts/sdmancgi.exe its supposed to give me a user / pass prompt and then when login successful I see the app and can wake on lan etc.
ok I have got this to work
on the actual machine where server is running I can access it in IE7 by localhost etc.. and it works
However when I try to access from another PC in my lan by typing <SERVER>/scripts/sdmancgi.exe I get a nice little message saying the content cannot be displayed you may require to insall a program or something to display it.
If I try to access the page from firefox on same remote PC, it works!
I can also access page from outside my LAN, it works on my N95 browser.
Also I have had friends try it from firefox from the Internet and they say it works as well.
Forgot to mention I am running on port 8081 as I already have other servers running on 8080 and 80 (one is my router and the other server installed itself from setup.exe and I dont know what server its using)
I have also tried latest apache server as well as some other free one. Both have the same effect. Ok in firefox, not in IE.
One would think its a problem with the cgi file not compatible with IE7 however, I even tried to go to default page setup in IIS <SERVER>:8081 and I get the same message. So at this point the server hasnt even tried to access CGI or prompt for Basic Authentication.
I tried googling and not much luck. I read something about CSS and when I view source of failed web page from IE7 it mentions something about CSS so dont know if this is it?

I can via hypervm console when I run apt-get update but it doesn't download anything.

I have successfully installed dns only to my vps. the problem is when i try to add it to the cluster system on my other vps it asks for a remote access key, so i visit both ip:2087/scripts/setrhash and ip:2086/scripts/setrhash and it shows an unable to connect error in firefox.
this is both using [url]
does anyone know how i can access the remote access key?

I have windows servers that I'll be co-locating very soon. I have purchased a Dell 2161ds-2 and an APC remote boot power strip. Could someone please tell me the best way to secure remote access to these products. Do I put them on public IP's and allow them through the firewall or do I put them behind the firewall and access them after I authenticate through the firewall.

I am working on one of client issue where client is facing problem accessing cgi-bin directory. I checked and found that cgi facility was not enabled in cPanel. I added that entry but it does not worked. Again, I checked httpd.conf file and added ScriptAlias entry for domain. Restarted apache, however, cgi-bin is still not accessible. Set permission on all cgi files.

I cannot access to [url](our Hosting provider). Can you access the website? I disabled my static IP by contacted my ISP and tryed to access it with different IPs. But I can access to other web sites. This problem occurred when I installed Boldchat operator with together Microsoft .NET Framework. Most times my modem settings broke because of this software. So I removed it from my computer. But I still cannot access to the web site. But I can access it by using anonymous surf sites such as [url] My ISP could not found a problem.

Hello everyone, i would like to know if the forum has users from Europe and that they have dedicate server at Liquid Web. I have few dedicate servers at liquidweb and in past 12 months I have big problems with speed with these servers, and with speed to them. Speed download / upload sometimes does not exceed either 512 Kbps and sometimes download or upload from liquidweb server can be only 10 kB/s.
Loading of some pages can take for 1 minute. I opened a ticket for this problem, but the Support feedback told me that this is quite normal for my distance which I consider totally unacceptable. It is acceptable that the ping must be large, but low speed is simply unimaginable.
