Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Webspace System User And Rsync Permissions
Nov 21, 2014
I have just used rsync to backup a dedicated server to a new cloud server. I put the files in a plesk webspace 'Backup' folder for ease of use (gui). In File Manager for that webspace it shows the folder user and group as root, which is obviously correct as rsync maintains users etc?
Thats fine, I just wanted to be able to back them up along with the rest of the server configuration and content.
However, when I run backup it says "For security reasons, backing up is performed on behalf of subscription's system user. This system user has no read access to:" and "So it was not backed up. All other data was backed up successfully. To fix this issue you may grant access read/write to the file or directory for system user "(username)" or "apache"."
I don't know how to give read/write access to the system user? Through file manager there is no option to change permissions.

I have a problem with my rsync backup
First of all my setup is thus:
I have a Linux box at the office which has an rsync cron on it which pulls from my web server as a backup. It pulls websites, mysql, conf files etc.
My web server is running debian etch LAMP etc.
When I originally set it up I used root user to log into the web server, and setup keys to authenticate, this worked perfectly.
I then decided that having direct root access to the web server was a bad thing so I have turned off root login (PermitRootLogin no in sshd_config)
I then setup a backup user which works fine for the website files but fails on permissions for the mysql data files (/var/lib/mysql)
How can I get over this without granting root access to the backup user which would defeat the object of not allowing root access.
I have been told about host authentication based on ip address but I have dynamic address at the office so that would be no good

Would like to know what are the dangers of backing up and restoring full entire system backups (with plesk installed) to another server with a different ip address? Will the restored plesk setup operate properly and offer an ip address change in the system, or will there be any pre-requisites required such as manual ip changing within the system core files?

I thought this problem was fixed in Plesk 11.5 but I'm still getting the following backup warnings in Plesk 12..."For security reason backup is performed on behalf of subscription system user...."
My phpbb forum creates cache files which have apache ownership and Plesk backup manager gives warnings that it cannot backup the files due to ownership errors.
I have searched for days for a solution without success. If I change the permissions to owner instead of apache the forums don't function correctly.
Is this a Plesk bug that is still evident in Plesk 12?

Plesk 11.5.30 all latest updated installed is used with Power-User view on an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 Bit system.
The Plesk Interface is working well in general. But if the customer clicks on "Webspaces" -> Add Webspace they run in a:
[URL] ....
Browser:
502 Bad Gateway
nginx
To try to fix it with:
/usr/local/psa/admin/bin/nginxmng --disable
/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all
/etc/init.d/apache2 restart
/etc/init.d/ngnix restart ( does not work anyway since the customer is not using it ) -> ngnix_enable=no
Which did not work ( ngnix is and was not active )
In the log /var/log/sw-cp-server/error.log
we can see:
[error] 1936#0: *180 recv() failed (104: Connection reset by peer) while reading response header from upstream, client: 84.177.142.220, server: , request: "GET /smb/account/create-subscription HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/sw-engine.sock:", host: "server:8443", referrer: "https://server:8443/smb/account"

I believe the product we are using is Parallels Operations Automation.
We have a customer that we want to be able to give the right to unlock user accounts. The only way to do this seems to be to enable "Billing" as one of the privileges. Unfortunately this gives them more access than we really want to. Is there some trick we can use to give this user only these rights?

How or what command do I run to get it to use the site username and psacln. It appears something maybe in an update or whatever has caused this issue. This only occurs with wordpress and drupal updates from the plesk interface.
What command can I run just to update the permissions to update all users to a username and psacln security settings on folders and directories.Running Plesk 12.0.18 and CentOS7

I backed a system up with rsync, and just used rsync to copy it into a new machine... I just backed up / to my home directory on another machine, and then 'extracted' it to / on the new machine.
But now everything (and I mean everything) is owned by "matt", my user on the intermediate machine. I rebooted the system to get it to boot the new stuff without realizing this, and now it's not booting... Since /etc/passwd, /bin/bash, etc. aren't owned by root.
Any tips on where to go from here? As I said, it's a brand-new machine (VM, actually: even better!), so re-imaging is a solution, but I'd still have to copy the data back over. Reinstalling is a pain, though, so if there's a simple fix, I'd prefer that. I've got pygrub installed as a boot manager for the VM, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get into single-user mode. (Nor am I sure that a "cd /; chown -R root" will have the desired effect?)

I have a dedicated server and till few days back i was able to edit my files fine but this morning when i am trying to edit any file, it gives me back this error:
[user@domainname theme]$ chmod 777 header.php
chmod: changing permissions of `header.php': Read-only file system
[user@domainname theme]$
[root@domainname theme]$ chmod 777 directoryy
chmod: changing permissions of `directoryy': Read-only file system
[root@domainname theme]$
I tried both as normal user and root and same results. Do you think the hosting guys changed the permissions of the file system or something?

CentOS 6.6
Plesk 12.0.18
64-bit
At some point, not sure when, PHPMyAdmin's (as accessed through the admin panel by clicking on a customer, manage hosting, databases, etc) permissions have changed such that I cannot view, edit or add MySQL routines/procedures. This appears to have occurred system-wide, though I have not checked every database on the server.
Is there a fix to get the permissions set so that I can make these changes again?

I had a old virtual Server with Ubuntu+Plesk12. I build a new dedicated Server with CentOS6+Plesk12 and migrate all Domains. Now i have a strange problem:
When i upload a file with FTP-User "user1", the file has the permissions Group=psacln & Owner=user1. All is fine, i can see and edit this file in a FTP-Program. But when my website create a file (cache html files or installed plugin folders in wordpress), I can't see, can't edit and can't download this files.
When i login to plesk with the admin account, i can see and edit this files. They have also Group=psacln & Owner=user1 and i can give them 0666 rights but when i login with FTP-User "user1" with my FTP-Program, I didn't see that files?!

Whenever I setup a new FTP user in Plesk and then configure my FTP client with exactly the same username and password and transfer files and folders onto the server then the file permissions allocated are incorrect. Folders get allocated a permission of 700 and files a permission of 600, whereas I want all folders to have a permission of 755 and files a permission of 644. How can I change my setup so that files and folders get the permissions I want ?

Most of the sites I am adding to this server will be WordPress sites and most of the folders I want to have a permission of 755 and for the files a permission of 644 so my question is how do I change the settings so that any new files ftp'd onto the server get the permission 755 and files get the permission of 644 ?

When a customer use the wordpress auto installation tool, all work ok.
But, when the customer try to install wordpress manually (Uploading by FTP), it returns different permissions errors.
Example: "wp-config.php" cant write .
I compared the permissions of both vhosts (WP-Auto-install and WP-Manually-Install), and have totally different permissions.
WP-Auto-installed : /httpdocs = 770
WP-Manually : /httpdocs = 750
How I can set permissions to 770 by default when create a vhost? to avoid the customer having to do it manually.

/usr/local/psa/bin/repair --restore-vhosts-permissions - to restore all domain permissions.

I have the following command to execute every 5 minutes this PHP file which is working correctly:
/usr/bin/wget -qq -O /dev/null http://url.com/script.php
How can I make it so only the system (scheduled task or the server itself) can access to the file to execute it. I tried placing CHMOD 700 to the PHP file but everyone is still able to access to it and executive it.

I have a python script that generates images and is able to write them into a directory on the same web space
However, I would like the same script to write files into another directory located in the web space of another domain on the same server.
For example, script lives here...
/var/www/vhosts/domain1.com/httpdocs/scripts/myscript.py
this works...
/var/www/vhosts/domain1.com/httpdocs/scripts/images/
this fails...
/var/www/vhosts/domain2.com/httpdocs/web/images/
The directory structure already exists, so there is no need to create any new directories
I have tried setting permissions for the destination "images" directory to 777 and that didn't work.
Do I need to specify something within Plesk to enable it to write to another directory?

I've finally made the leap to upgrading from shared hosting to a VPS. I'm still setting up my configuration before I point the domain name to my new server, but for now, I have the site mirrored and I'm ensuring that all is running well. For the most part, everything is working, but I am running into a few permission issues...
As of right now, all the files in my htdocs directory are owned by root, and I am logging into my FTP client as root. However, I'm pretty sure that this is not how I should be doing this, because I need to allow write permissions to some folders from my php scripts.
I was just curious, how do you you guys set up the users and groups on your linux servers (running apache). I'm just not certain of the best way to handle it. Should I make a new FTP user, and if so, what group should it go in? Should that user be the owner of all the web files? When is it safe to set folder permissions to 777?
