Recomended HP ProLiant Dedicated Server Hosting Service

Jun 11, 2008

I'm after a hosting solution for 2 servers (RHEL4) with load balancing.

Ideally, I'd like HP ProLiant servers.

I've found that RackSpace can do that - are they any good?

Do you know about someone else that can help here (NTT/Verio have the server HW, but their LB does not support RTSP which is critical for me).

2. When should I go for self service instead?

3. What do you recommend for learning server administration?

Memory In HP Proliant DL 360 Server

May 29, 2007

We have a HP Proliant DL 360 Server, it was running with 2gb RAM, this consisted of 4 x 512mb sticks. We upgraded by adding another 4gb, this was 2 x 2gb sticks, so we removed 2 of the 512mb sticks and replaced with 2 x 2gb stickes, effectively giving us 5gb of RAM. When I rebooted the machine at the server centre it immediately displayed 5 gb of RAM as it run thru boot up, it then displayed a screen saying it had found the RAM (it looked like a BIOS type, although I'm no expert) I think if my memory serves me right it then confirmed the memory was OK and continued booting into Windows 2003. However when we viewed the maching remotely it is only showing 4gb of RAM. Does anyone have any idea why this might be? where would are missing RAM be? I guess its the 2 x 512 not displaying. Its awkward to access the server easily, it means making an appointment etc, I wondered if there is anything we can do remotely to configure the RAM.

Co-Location & Dedicated Server Service Provider Game

Jun 3, 2007

This is serious, please do not find the thread as SPAM, waste of time, or useless. I'm doing my research while at it.

Current Provider: ThePlanet
CPU: Dual Core 3.2GHz (seeking 2.8GHz Dual Core or better)
Memory: 1GB (seeking 1GB or more or better; unknown technical specs)
Harddrives: 400GB Harddrive (seeking 400GB or more or better)
Cost: ~$320/month (seeking at this price or cheaper)
Bandwidth: 1500GB @ 100Mbps (seeking more than 1500GB, but @ 100Mbps)

So help me find providers other than ThePlanet (good hosting, but not good enough to help advance the webhosting business through over-selling). I am seeking for specs at, around, or close to the ones I gave above (monthly fee also). Reliability is a very important factor!

Singlehop - 1 Year Review Of Dedicated Server And Customer Service

Sep 23, 2009

just want to say this forum kicks some serious arse. It helped me out tremendously with a potential scam that I almost got myself caught in this morning. Secondly, since I am on here posting this morning I might as well post up a one year review of Singlehop.com and the dedicated server I am using.

My websites hosted on rig: www.svtsnake.com, www.nsgcenter.com, www.nextlevelhardware.com
My host: SingleHop
My sales rep: Miguel Villegas
My hosting package: Dedicated Server E8400, 2GB ram, 250GB HDD (non raid), Plesk CP with 5 domain license.
My monthly pricing: 189.00 even per month

At the beginning of my term about a year ago I was achieving 2.1 to 3.0 MB/s throughput down and close to 500 KB/s up which is excellent and really incredible for working on SSH Secure Shell for me with uploading and downloading DB files, etc. At this current point in time I have noticed a minor decrease in speed to around 1.5 MB/s download speeds and at nighttime hours around 700K, which is more than ample and still excellent IMO as you will see in this picture: http://nsgcenter.com/dlspeed.jpg

I am very happy with overall throughput of the server at almost all hours. You can check out overall network response time and server DB response by playing around with the vbulletin database I run at svtsnake.com. There is always a huge amount of concurrent users and never any slowdown.

Something else incredible for me with Singlehop so far is network downtime. I can honestly say, since my latest term with them. I was also a customer a few years ago and had a few issues with server downtime that I ceased being a customer with them because of it. However, I was refunded an compensated in a timely matter and everything was taken care of immediately.

However, it seems that as of recently they have improved there infrastructure tremendously because I have NOT been down for 1 second in over 7 months. Even when they schedule downtine, my server has never noticed it. My uptime has been 100% for every single day that I have owned this server on Singlehop.com.

There is one issue that I can say I am very unhappy with, and it is an issue where all partys can be blamed even including myself. I am well aware that there policy states after 3 days of non payment they can shut down server connection. So, I was a customer for seven months when a new single hop account executive named Miguel Villegas joined the team and was my representative. I had changed my cell phone and never updated the file, and at the same time I own multiple businesses and frequently close and open different credit/debit/rewards cards to be used for processing payment. Note that I have never missed a payment with them up until this point. The payment was do on like the 18th of the month or something, and I received the invoice thinking that my credit card on file was automatically going to pay my bill like it always does. But it just so happens that the credit card I had on file with singlehop was stolen at a nightclub in NYC called MansionNYC, and I was pick pocketed. I lost all of my credit cards that night and called up to report all of them stolen. So, obviously I was issued new credit card and I was waiting for them to issue me new cards in the mail and new numbers, which took about 3 to 5 days with most companys. So, here I am 3 days late for payment and I wake up one morning and ALL of my websites are completely shut down. No notification, no warning, just closed and I got an email from Miguel Villegas my account representative explaing that my server was turned off until I remit payment.

I called up Singlehop and I was furiated, yelled almost at the top of my lungs that they simply just shut off a server, after 3 days of payment. Especially in a situation like this and they never even called me up to let me know they were doing this because my cell phone was different on file - which was mis-communication on my part. At this point in time I called up my bank HSBC and got an emergency debit card number to make the payment to Miguel through email and my server was re-activated.

But, 3 days after invoice is due to just cancel someones server or suspend it is definitely not good business policy. I have been a customers for almost a year and the whole incident was a fluke, they didnt have to suspend the server. In my business, we give a customer at least 30 days to pay a bill. But thats not the point, I know there policy states you have 3 days to remit payment or policy account suspension. But I think that is a horrendous policy, especially for emergency situations like I was in. What happens if the owner of a business is dying of an anyeurism in the hospital and is 3 days late with his web payment for his website, does singlehop simply suspend his 16 million hit per month vbulletin forum just because of lack of communication and payment?

I am still a longstanding customer with Singlehop but felt I needed to share that story with everyone. So, yes I am very happy with quality of service, speed of service, tech support, packages offered. But, I am very upset about there payment policy regarding 3 days of lack of payment that just aint right. I really like the attitude and business practices of the execs at the company and they are going to hate me for the negative feedback of my one bad incident with them, but overall Singlehop has my business and will have my business UNTIL either the server is offline every other week, or my DB crashes due to SInglehop issues. LOL Neither I think will be happening anytime soon.

Thanks for reading everyone. If anything, I hope Singlehop reads this and considers modifying there policy regarding server suspension and lack of payment maybe to something more like 10 to 15 days. Not 3 days.

HP ProLiant Vs SuperMicro

Apr 13, 2008

I have many years of experience with Intel (SR1325, SR2200, SR2300, etc) and HP ProLiant DL servers, and have come to love HP. Their ILO2 remote management/power/KVM/VirtualMedia feature is hands-down the best I've used, and for me it's been 100% rock-solid reliable (unlike the horror stories heard about Dell DRAC cards flaking out and locking up when you need them most).

Now there's something shiny catching my eye-- the Supermicro 1U Twin systems.

http://www.supermicro.com/products/nfo/1UTwin.cfm?pg=1

Given my long positive history with HP, I'm reluctant to consider another brand, but it is hard to ignore double-density servers with colo prices (rackspace costs, not just power costs) spiraling upward.

I would love to hear from folks who have used both HP and Supermicro boxes in production. Specifically, about reliablity of the Supermicro platform in general AND about the reliability of their IPMI management modules even under Murphy's Law situations. The last thing I need is not to be able to remote-console or power cycle an unresponsive server because the IPMI card is flaky.

Dedicated Server Or Own Hosting

Mar 25, 2009

I have a client that wants to expand their website with a downloads section that has thousands of files and tens of gigabytes. I'm considering two options:

1. dedicated hosting:
- Is it an advantage to use a dedicated hosting service in the same city as opposed to one in another country?
- How would I go about changing hosting providers if one doesn't work out?
- How would I go about making and restoring backups?
- How does one access a dedicated hosting machine nowadays? Is it still via Telnet or something like that?

2. own hosting
- Do you think it's practical to have a dedicated server and link in company offices?
- Do the benefits of being easily able to change internet link providers and to make snap daily backups outweigh the benefits of a hosting provider's reliable infrastructure?

This dedicated server would only be a file server. The website itself would be on a normal hosting platform that would just redirect users to the dedicated server for the files to be downloaded. How is this kind of thing usually done?

HP Proliant DL380 G2 New Fan Speed

I've been running a Proliant DL380 G2 for awhile now, and today Ive run into a new problem. But first...

* When I setup and installed Windows 2000 on the server, I had installed a sound card in it as well.
* I then installed all the necessary software to run the server, and one of the drivers that were installed throttled down the fans.

Everything has worked flawlessly for 24/7 for 9 months up until today. Today I uninstalled the sound card drivers from device manager, then shutdown the server and removed the sound card. I then powered up the server, and now all the fans are running full blast and no longer throttling. If anyone hasn't been around a proliant, imagine 6 hair dryers running.

Right now, I cant hear anything else that's going on around me and if anyone has any experience with proliants I'm very open to suggestions on getting these fans back down to a tolerable level.

The only errors I'm getting in event viewer are the usual DCOM errors. Event ID 10005

Dedicated Server Vs Shared Hosting...

Aug 12, 2008

I am working on creating a social networking website. It will have approximately 2500 members with about 1/2 using video. I spoke to 2 different programmers through rent-a-coder. One told me to get a dedicated server through GoDaddy that runs me about $120/mo. The other programmer told me that there was no way that I would need that much and I could get a shared hosting package for $10-$20/mo and that would work fine. He said that a dedicated server wouldnt be necessary unless I was getting a ton of hits to my site or needed to host multiple sites. I inquired about it with GoDaddy and when I mentioned I was doing a social networking site, they said I would need the dedicated server. I am hiring someone to build the site since it is beyond what I am capable of, so I am clueless on who is correct.

VPS Or Dedicated Server?? Or Stick With Shared Hosting?

Dec 18, 2008

VPS or Dedicated Server?? Or stick with shared hosting?

I currently use a shared hosting reseller account with HostGator for $24.95 which gives me 24 GB disk space and 250 GB RAM and allows me to host unlimited domains. It has cPanel, WHM and it is managed. I've used them for two years and they are awesome! Currently, I have about 20 very small domains hosted under my hosting account: all are very small and require no bandwidth or disk space whatsoever. EXCEPT, I have two or three domains which are solely used for e-commerce which is why I am considering upgrading to a VPS or dedicated-server.Background on the business:Users visit the site (300 visitors a day) and use the shopping cart to place an order for the software which ranges from $50-$300. An account is created for them in which they can login to download the software packages which range from 10 MB to 100 MB file size. They then install it on their computer and activate it with the license key number. Upon activation, the installed software connects with our backend of our website to update their account with their computers fingerprint. Each time the software is executed, their computer connects with our licensing server to verify legitimate usage. Our backend has access to their billing information and licensing; therefore, security is a must.We have about 4,000 users. Recently, with the business growing, I am not sure if I should be looking for a VPS or dedicated-server solution. With HostGator I'm paying $300 a year (and everything is running seamlessly). Or, I can switch to VPS for $500/yr and dedicated server for $2000/year. My budget is open, though I don't want to get anything that is overkill for the logistics of my business. What I current use and need:*Space: Up to 10 GB *Bandwidth: Up to 100 GB*Reliable, 99.9%+ uptime and MANAGED server*Daily backups*Good support (i.e. installing SSL certs, firewall)*Secure*cPanel*Allow me to host other my other non-business websites (1 big forum with 500 visitors/day and 19 very small parked sites) *IONCube support*I will have to get SSL for a few of my sites. And for that, I’ll need dedicated IP addresses. I would prefer if there is a VPS or dedicated server solution which has a package for multiple dedicated IP addressesQuestions:1) For my business, would you recommend VPS or dedicated-server or do you think I am fine with what the shared hosting reseller account with HG I have already? If a VPS or dedicated server is justified, which provider do you recommend that suits my needs?2) Will I truly see a notable and significant improvement by upgrading from my current state to a VPS or dedicated server?3) Will I need a firewall to ensure security for the 4,000 clients? How can I optimize the security of my clients?4) Privacy is a very important concern (not that I'm doing anything illegal). I use GoDaddy to do a private whois so it does not reveal my name or address. If I switch to VPS or dedicated server, should I be concerned that people can use the IP address of the website to identify me? What approaches can I take to protect my privacy?5) What do you think of slicehost.com? I was recommended to use this. I thought maybe the 256 slice plan would be appropriate for me, but I don't know what linux distribution to use: Ubuntu, CentOs, Fedora, Gentoo, Debian, etc. Heck, I don't even know the differences and I don't plan on playing around with anything on the server.I really appreciate your help in this matter. I am a totally newbie when it comes to this hosting stuff.

Been Denied By Three Hosts For Dedicated Server Hosting

May 16, 2009

I have quite the story to tell. I have been denied service by three hosts within the past week for no particular reason.

I have been conducting business for over three years and have a US-registered legitimate business to run, and am in need of two dedicated servers of my specifications in multiserver configuration to meet my needs.

At all three of these hosts, I have chatted over live chat with the salesman getting me excited to venture with them, only to be let down and rejected service - as their own right, to refuse anyone for their service.

The first company was HiVelocity, the second was WiseDedi, and the third is BuzzServers. All companies had given me false hopes and promises - I actually put in a preorder at Buzz Servers for this upcoming Monday for two servers.

What's going on with this industry, and particularly, this forum? I've never had a problem with hosts in the past, or dedicated server hosting specifically. I'm moving, or looking to move to a new host, because I need a multiserver configuration - my current host could not configure it properly with DirectAdmin, and asked me to find another host to do this, and here I am, going back and forth between companies and getting rejected of service.

My company is not illegal nor does it represent any sort of threat, and has been online and established for years. I also pay on time via some sort of subscription, whether that be PayPal or 2Checkout, or even Google Checkout. I've never had a negative feedback, either.

I don't understand how or why this is happening, because now for the third time I've been denied by three hosts. Each and every have wasted my time by offering me their service and servers at the pricing I can afford ($350/mo), only to tell me later that the manager is denying my service.

What's going on with this industry?

Can anyone actually recommend me a solid, stable, established hosting company?

ALL of the hosts that have rejected me are brand new, unestablished, and incompetent from what I see - they reject my business. Surely I will be there to speak out against them, and for good services, I always write good reviews and testify for them.

Rob at HiVelocity banned me from their live chat support for asking about why my service was denied, and now Richard Anderson of Buzz Servers booted me from chat after I asked why as well with the answer "as a business we have the right to refuse.." - if it's not written on the website, that is not a right I believe as that is discrimination.

You'd think with someone with a good reputation like me, whose been around for years, I'd get a bit more respect than false hopes and promises, when I need a solution...now.

Dedicated Server Hosting With Self DNS Record Submission

Nov 12, 2008

I was using dedicated server from ev1servers.net.

They are excellent. One of the feature .. unless I forgot was the ability to add our domain record to their DNS server by ourselves.

I think it was controlcommand, or commandcenter, or was it controlcentre , I forget.

This feature is very fascinating as I can make my site up and running within second.
[I know where to register domain with real time activation, and I have reseller account with WHM]

So everytime I have an idea of making a website. All of this cycle can be done within seconds , and my site is up and running. [register domain, create account in WHM, and populate the DNS record]

Anybody know any dedicated server provider which offering this kinda feature this day?

Regular Shared Hosting Vs. VPS Vs. Dedicated Server

Jun 1, 2008

My head is about to explode with all the information available in regard to regular shared hosting verses VPS verses dedicated server and I still don't have an answer. It will probably be of some benefit to say that I have virtually no experience in any of this aside of having previously published a small website. Of course there are no worries when it comes to something small however, now I am getting into something much larger and am pretty much sitting here like a scared rabbit in the face of trying to make the right host decision.

Let me start by saying that my site is a reverse auction type of site that will also have a forum, blog, small auction venue etc. Users will be uploading files and communicating within the site as well. It might help to say that it is similiar to getafreelancer.com. We won't have a technical theme but the set up is similiar.

My question is....I don't know what kind of host to go with! I originally thought IX but then read up on the dishonesty involved with claims of unlimited bandwidth. Then I thought about VPS which I guess is different from regular hosts but I'm not clear as to why. It's still shared isn't it? Finally, I'm thinking about a dedicated server. I have found a place called server4you.com that has reasonable prices but I still need to check them out. The problem with this option is that I have absolutely no understanding of the tech side of dealing with my own server. I know that some companies offer a managed option but they are so expensive and I don't even know what that would entail.

Plus what about security, how does that work with a dedicated server. For example, when shared hosting companies list options that come with a package, SSL is always mentioned for e-commerce hosting. How would I secure my own site?

How in the world is someone supposed to know how much space they need before they publish? You really can't determine data transfer ahead of time. I am in dire need of some good options that won't bleed me dry and I barely know of the right questions to ask.
