Raptor Corrupted In First Month Of LSN Server
Sep 12, 2008
My 150gb Raptor drive in my Q9300 + 8gb ram server got corrupt. When restarting, the tech got a halt error:
Windows failed to load because the kernel debugger DLL is missing, or corrupt.
Status: 0xc00000e9
File: Windowssystem32kdcom.dll
Their tech support is good, but I've lost all my valuable data. I can't say that I'm happy about using Limestonenetworks now. I never suspected that I'd be having a disk failure in the first month.

I'm about to purchase a 2nd server to use as a database server. I've been quoted for 2 x SATA II 320GB hdd's in RAID 1 (the same of which I currently use on my single server), but searching around it appears SCSI is the norm for db servers. The problem is, my host does not offer these as a standard/upgrade option and they would need to be specially ordered (along with RAID card), which is expensive.
The fastest disks they offer are 150GB SATA 10K Raptors. My question is, would these be sufficient (compared to SCSI) and do they perform noticeably better than the standard SATA II disks?
Quoted database server specs:
Server = 1 x Dual Core Intel Woodcrest 5130
Memory = 4G RAM
Hard Drive 1 = 320G SATA II Hard Drive
Hard Drive 2 = 320G SATA II Hard Drive
Raid Config = RAID 1 (3 Ware Hardware RAID)
Bandwidth = 3000G Multi-Homed Bandwidth
IP Address = 4 IPs
OS = Centos 4.6 32 bit
Service Monitoring = Ping Monitoring with Email Notification
Server Management = Self-Managed
Control Panel = None
$239 Monthly

I'm going to use it for a massive SQL database driven site.
Was wondering if SA-SCSI 10K RPM is far away better than Raptor SATA 10K if combined with quad core processor and 8GB RAM?

How much faster is a Raptor 74GB 10,000rpm compared to a Seagate 250GB SATA-II 7200rpm? Both are priced the same. I'm comtemplating on which one to use for a database..go for more storage or a faster drive.

seems like my server has a corrupted tcp/ip stack. can it be resolved without actually reinstalling the OS?
also, what are the possible reasons that could have caused the corrupted tcp/ip stack, because it just happened suddenly out of nowhere =(
with a corrupted tcp/ip stack, there's no way i can remotely access it right?
the only way to fix the server is to either get the techs in the datacenter to do it or i'll have to go down personally to do it?

OS: CentOS 5.1 32 bit fully updated.
I'm trying to tar a folder that has 100's of thousands of files and I ensured that no files are being added or modified in that folder while the below command is being executed:
nice --adjustment=20 tar -cf users_from.tar users_from
I've tried it multiple times and it always stops before it finishes and ends up with a corrupted .tar file which gives errors when extracted and is obviously missing a lot of files. Sometimes it creates 200+ MB, sometimes 50 MB before it stops.
I also have enough RAM + swap for the operation so that can't be the cause.
So is it just impossible to tar a directory with so many files and is it even possible to get a list of the files in that directory?

Just a warning to all other hosts out there using cPanel it currently generates corrupted mysql backups due to a bug in their pkgacct script which has been like this for over 6 days now.
[url]
So for anyone out there it's an easy fix.
Of course not every host is doing it so the fun of helping a customer migrate data and explain to them that their hosts backups being made are all corrupted is lots of fun.
Sort of sad but I've been told this isn't a critical enough issue to even push it out to all versions. Right now it makes a great lock in so customers cannot switch providers without a lot more work.

So what I got is a problem that /home partition of the server is heavily corrupted.
NOC has already done a FSCK on the disk, but not all the errors were fixed. So they are
running another FSCK.
Here's what manager suggested
Quote:
Hence, to save time, we would suggest an OS reload on the server. We may do OS reload on a fresh hard disk and then attach the current disk as secondary. After that we may use a data recovery tool such DDRESCUE to recover data from the corrupted hard drive.
Since I am bit nervous now (no backups, as chornobs wasn't been able to run it due corrupted hdd for some time) wondering. How often it fails to recover all the data? I know it's hard to say, but just aprox?

What are some pros and cons to these setups?
And why would someone do one vs the other?
I have my own thoughts but am wanting others opinions.
Plus would it even be worth clustering servers that cheap?

We've a hard drive corrupted.
So we can't even access as a mount point putting it as secondary hdd.
So I'm looking good data recovery services based on US, nearest as possible from Layeredtech, so I can send that disk for recovery.

I've signed up with Wiredtree for a Managed VPS 12 days ago.
I know it's not enough time to write a review. But I decided to write my first impression then keep you updated by writing a new review at the end of each month, so expect one at 12 February.
For now, these guys are simply the best I've tried.
They reply you in 15 minutes or less and if it took them more, 20 minutes or something, then be sure that they're investigating your problem. If you can't wait for 15 minutes, then go ahead and give them a call on their toll-free number and they'll be with you second by second. Their support wont just solve your problem, but they'll educate you telling you what caused the problem and how did they fix it.
I'm solicitous about security. But with these guys, I finally sleep peacefully knowing that my VPS is well secured.

I'm looking for a server with 3-4 TB of disk space and moderate traffic requirements (1.5-2 TB a month will suffice).
CPU, RAM do not really matter.
Location: EU or US.
Price: ~100 USD a month with some setup fee or ~120 USD without.
So far I found OVH's SP Storage (http://www.ovh.co.uk/individual/products/superplan_storage.xml) which offers 4 x 1.5 TB RAID0/1 drives for a total of 3 TB disk space. However I can't register with them and their sales did not react quickly enough yet to help me.
Is there anyone else with similar offerings with whom you have personal experience?

Leaseweb Three Month Review
1 ) Why this review
2 ) Ordering a Server
3 ) Things are running
4 ) DDOS
5 ) 100 mbit burstable @ 8mbit ...?
6 ) beeing d*cks
*Why This Review*
Originally the intention was to forget as soon as possible about what happened in the past three months and to move on with our new isp. To our regret, Leaseweb has besides the overall lack of service in the past months found it neccessary to kill our network connection without notice a day prior to the ending of our contract. Eventhough the impact is minimal, this gesture speaks for itself.
*Ordering a Server*
Having been a leaseweb customer directly and indirectly for several years in theyre budget segment we to be fairly honnest have rarely had any trouble ordering, nor have we had any trouble with the delivery of the purchased servers.
We experienced differently when ordering the following :
Dell Poweredge 1950
2x Quad Core Xeon L5320
16 GB DDR2
4 x 300GB SAS
raid 1+0
IP KVM card
1 x 100Mbps Full-Duplex
10 Mbps (95%) bandwith
SLA : Best Effort
OS : Debian
Ordered 09/30/2008 - payment sent immediatly
summary of the communication exchange ...

Prepaid for 1 year: EUR 19xx.
HP server provisioned on Apr 18, but with wrong hardware: KVM not working, and RAID controller can't do JBOD.
After slow and lengthy email exchange, they agreed to swap it with a Dell that's supposed to fix these hardware problems. Price would remain the same.
Dell server provisioned on May 18, but again RAID controller can't do JBOD. And access to KVM is not provided.
And they want to charge me another EUR 19xx for this replacement server!
Immediately emailed them about these 3 problems, but it's been 4 days and haven't heard a word from them.

Its been little more than a month since i moved my server from therobberz (aka theplanet, after 3 years of service) to webnx.
i reached a point where 145 dollars for a p 4 2.4,1 GB,80 GB,10 mbps was way too much.tried talking with tp reps a few times to see if i could get a better deal.the cheapest quad core they had was around 200 USD ( including cpanel)
the order was placed on a friday afternoon.i was expecting the order to be processed on monday as sales and billing would be off the weekend.saturday night,a tech support guy processed my order and i got the payment confirmation late saturday night.
my server came online on monday morning.it has been very good for the last 41 days.
so much for the nincompoops at tp who told me that moving a server from tp another "unknown" provider would be catastrophic.wonder why their reps keep saying they are the biggest provider out there and no one can match their level of service.in my opinion,tp is pure evil.
root@prototype [/]# uptime
17:10:04 up 41 days, 3:13, 1 user, load average: 2.00, 0.95, 0.88
i have reported my server ip address to the moderators

I originally signed up with Geekstorage in November with one of their specials. They got me hooked with the "Geek" theme they had, thinking these guys know what they are doing and that was first mistake.
I signed up for the VPS 512 for $55/month, which was decent but not an amazing deal.
This was the special:
The VPS 512 includes...
* 40 GB NAS & RAID Protected Storage (50% more... 60 GB Storage!)
* 400 GB Premium Bandwidth (50% more... 600 GB Premium Bandwidth!)
* 512 MB Guaranteed RAM (FREE Upgrade... 640 MB Guaranteed RAM)
* 1,536 MB Burstable RAM
* Only $55.00/month (Get 50% OFF your first invoice! Use coupon: WHT50MORE)
Since the beginning, my VPS was slow, but they kept telling me that their on and getting it fixed. The server was fast one day and really slow the next and it still is til today. And when I say really slow, I mean really slow; cpanel would take over a min to load, and sometimes I would finish typing up a support ticket before it finished loading. Now as far as support, at first they were very responsive (at least when you're within their 60 days money back guarantee), within 20-30 mins tops. Then after they 60 days, it went to 60 mins, then 2 hours, you get the idea.
I'm a very patient person, and they gave them several months to fix the server issue but that still was not the reason I canceled. I purchased a domain from Godaddy and when I changed the nameserver to our vps, the site was propagated for a couple of hours and then unpropagated, then in the morning was propagated, and then unpropagated. This was the first time that I have had this happen. So I put in support to check to see what was going on, and the support gave me a canned answer, it take 24-72 hours to propagated, but that was not what I was asking, in fact I even mentioned in the ticket from the beginning I know that it takes 24-72 hours. I then asked them again as to what was going on and again he responded with the same answer. So being a little fed up with this, I decided to changed the nameserver to my friends server to see what happens and long and behold within 3 hours everything was up.
Now, I not blaming them for what was going on with the nameserver issue, but it's when I responded back to them that it's working on my friends server and not on mine, they straight out said that I should of provided the domain name and tried to pin it on me.
Again, I don't disagree with that but how was i supposed to know support wanted the domain name, when they didn't even ask for it, which they had a couple of times to do so. And after mentioning that to them, all they could say is if they could cancel my account, that's a great why of saying thank you for your business.
Bottom line, being a paid customer and tech trying to put blame on customers, isnt my definition of customer service. Not professional and bad for business
Pros: Ok price package, but not great
Cons: Bad support, live chat that's never online, a phone number to call that always goes to voicemail, really slow server
After several hours of reading reviews and comparing hosting companies, I narrowed it down to Knownhost and Servint. I ended up going with Servint and I'm extremely happy with the support, price and speed of hosting.
I went with the essential VPS:
30 GB Disk Space
1 TB Monthly Transfer
768 MB Guaranteed (1.5 GB Burst RAM)
CentOS 5 Operating System
4 IP Addresses
Unlimited Domains and User Accounts
FREE Virtuozzo Power Panel
FREE nightly backups
FREE cPanel or Plesk 9 Available [details]
No set-up fee
$49 monthly
I can say my site loaded 10-20 times faster than it did with Geekstorage and their support is amazing, you can email, call or support ticket. They respond to support tickets normal within 10 mins and most of the time less than 5.
Compared to Geekstorage, I get better support, really fast servers, and more bandwidth. Also, I after I switched to Servint, I put in a request to have my hosting canceled, but didnt get any kind of confirmation saying they received it or anything. I put in a support ticket to billing asking if they received it but no response. Then I put in a regular support ticket asking the same thing, no response. Now, it's almost two days since I put the tickets in, I decided to put a post in their forum, and soon as I register and was waiting for admin approval from admin to be able to post, I get an email from Jay saying that they are in the process.
Btw, with Servint same thing happened with another domain, but the difference between Geekstorage and Servint was ... Servint's first response was "what's the sites address?" instead of a canned answer.
