Windows Vs Linux Hosting ..?

Sep 28, 2009

a speaker at a meet-up stated that the only reason Linux is a more popular server platform is that kids starting hosting companies do not need to pay for the license...

whereas college educated techies prefer the windows platform for their servers..

So I thought I would get some opinions from the pro's... which is the overall best server platform

Windows... or Linux

The New Way Of Hosting With Linux At Home

Jul 2, 2008

The best way to start today is with a small biz website hosted under linux at home. I believe this is the solution... if your website grows generating profits you can buy more computers or servers this will pay the expenses itself... No hiden fees, no monthly fees (except a few more dollars for electricity). I host in ubuntu server edition with gnome-desktop surfing, working & hosting at the same.

Linux Hosting And Security

Jan 20, 2008

About next week, I'll put a Linux box on the web.

Could anyone suggest what kind of security measures I could implement?

Iptables:
- Protect against DDos?
- Protect against certain worms?
- Protect against flooding?

Services:
- Protect against constant dictionary attacks based on ports?

Pretty much any experience you could put down in this thread would be invaluable.

Also mod, if this shouldnt be here. Feel free to move, Im not sure where it should go!

Windows Web Hosting To Linux

Nov 27, 2007

I'm currently hosting some websites using XAMPP/Apache/MySQL (obviously with heavily edited configs) on Windows. The largest site has around 40,000 forum members and grows extensively every day.

Would I see better benefits buying a Linux/*nix server for web hosting needs? What flavour of Linux/*nix would be best suited out of the following options:

CentOS 4 (32 bit)
CentOS 4 (64 bit)
CentOS 5 (32 bit)
CentOS 5 (64 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (32 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (64 bit)
Fedora Core 6 (32 bit)
Fedora Release 7 (32bit)
FreeBSD 6.2 (32 bit)
Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (64 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (64 bit)

Also, would using a control panel such as cPanel (I'd say Plesk, but very bad experience with it on Windows) be beneficial?

The above would be going on a single process Quad Core with 4GB RAM.

Windows + Linux Shared Hosting

Aug 7, 2008

This one may be a bit of a stretch, but does anyone know of a shared host who gives you both Windows and Linux hosting with one account? It is possible, as the company myhosting.com seems to offer it, and I think (mt) MediaTemple has some betas with it.

Update: Apparently MyHosting.com does it by giving you a primarily windows account with a linux sub-domain. That would work for me, but I'd rather a more known provider.

Managing Linux Apache Hosting

Oct 19, 2007

I'm a window type of guys and considered myself more proficient using windows operating system. However, when it comes to linux, i have not really a clue except some simple command i learnt from CMD that also applied to linux.

I have a root access to my dedicated box and I use putty for SSH. Problem is from there, what kind of usual and daily web admin do to the ssh?

In other words, what is the daily routine of Network Admin in Linux?

Any recommendation of website that introduce me to using ssh to use remote linux server?

.JSP Page Will Not Display On GoDaddy Linux Hosting

Jan 12, 2009

I can not get a .JSP page to display on a deluxe hosted GoDaddy account. I have tried the most basic page. Just to make sure I do not have a type-o, I even used an HTML page to direct me.

Here is the HTML page that has the hyperlink. This page displays fine.

Code:
<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
</head>

<body>

Here is a test page

<a href="test.jsp">Test JSP</a>

</body>
</html>
Here is the JSP page that can not be displayed.

Code:
<%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"
pageEncoding="ISO-8859-1"%>

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
[url]

<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
</head>

<body>

Here is a test JSP page

</body>
</html>

When I click on the link, I get the HTTP 400 error saying the webpage could not be found. I know the code works since I have tested it locally. Plus the code is very simple.

I am very stumped here and have tried GoDaddy’s help multiple times. They keep telling me it is a scripting issue. I am not sure how it can be a scripting issue because there is no script here. Basically, it is an HTML page with a .JSP extension.

Which Company I Should Choose (PHP/Linux) For Shared Hosting

Aug 7, 2008

I'm trying for days to decide which company I should use for my shared hosting/maybe (reseller(beginner)) (PHP/Linux), and hostmonster and bluehost have been getting the best "official" reviews but everybody else is complaining for their downtimes and unreliability. I'm currently with dailyrazor and today my site was down for sometime without the reason. I wasn't even informed about that. If I didn't checked myself it would be down god knows for how long. ...

My preferences:

I would like to host 3-5 sites at least 2 will have shopping cart's (5 MySql databases MAX), not much of audio or video at all. I don't want to spend more than $10 monthly. Location US, Guarantied uptime 99.9%

I've a vps hosting with several domains as you can see

I have to install several SSL certificates and the provider indicates me I must use different IP address in each domain, but I don't know how to do that.

I have several IPs

But all the domains are associated with the first IP, and I can't disassociate one domain and associate it to other IP.

Only when I go to settings for the hosting, I can change the IP, but it's the IP of the hosting, not the IP for one domain.
