Do you suggest Windows Server 2008 hosting or redhat linux hosting?
Here is my dilemma, thanks to a thread in these forums I was directed to a hosting website called pc-core.net and I was interested in using them, because it does not appear that they oversell at all. My question is regarding the fact that they have the shared hosting for $12/month with ~5gb of disk space and 50gb of transfer. I then just looked at reseller hosting for the heck of it, and noticed i could get a reseller hosting account with 45gb storage and 450gb of bandwidth for $10/month. Even though I wont be selling hosting, or anything like that, can I use a reseller hosting account like a normal shared hosting account?...just with more space and bandwidth?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the VPS scene, so could someone tell me the difference between VPS and say shared hosting or dedicated hosting? Actually I really like to know what a Virtual Private Server actually is.. I know shared hosting is typically a single account on a server with several hundred other accounts which is used primarily for the sole purpose of hosting websites, and I know that dedicated hosting is functionally the same as colo except that you rent the server, instead of having your own purchased server plugged into some network. So what is VPS?

i am trying to set up an acct now and having some serious problems.
I can't even find the File manager to add files, images, etc.
add email accts, forwarders..etc..
Please help the host's tutorial didn't give me much. Icalled support & they want to charge us to ask for support since it is a un-managed vps. I did manage to update the NS and add the hostname...so I think there are only a few more simple steps. BUT I can't believe the file manager is not there or email set-up.
it is a linux VPS with cPanel
can i run a vps like a reseller account
View 10 Replies View RelatedProspective web hosting clients have to understand that there's a clear difference between a cheap hosting service and an affordable one.
For one, an afordable service has to do with the budget of the client, meaning the cient has a an amount he will like to spend on a web host account while a cheap web hosting service has to do with the price of the product in relation with the services offered. For example a shared host that you get for $10 will definitey have more features than a shared that cost $3.99.
You have to know what you want before taking an action that you may regret later.
What is the difference/benefits of VPS vs. Shared hosting?
View 10 Replies View Relatedif the physical location of the hosting company's server makes any difference to search engine rankings (especially Google)?
The reason I ask is that I have been running a successful site, targeted at potential customers in the USA. About a year ago, I moved to a different hosting company, which happened to be in Canada. At that point, my traffic dropped by about 50%.
I'm now thinking of moving the site back to a US-based host, but, before I do, I'd welcome your opinions on whether this would be worthwhile.
a speaker at a meet-up stated that the only reason Linux is a more popular server platform is that kids starting hosting companies do not need to pay for the license...
whereas college educated techies prefer the windows platform for their servers..
So I thought I would get some opinions from the pro's... which is the overall best server platform
Windows... or Linux
I'm currently hosting some websites using XAMPP/Apache/MySQL (obviously with heavily edited configs) on Windows. The largest site has around 40,000 forum members and grows extensively every day.
Would I see better benefits buying a Linux/*nix server for web hosting needs? What flavour of Linux/*nix would be best suited out of the following options:
CentOS 4 (32 bit)
CentOS 4 (64 bit)
CentOS 5 (32 bit)
CentOS 5 (64 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (32 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (64 bit)
Fedora Core 6 (32 bit)
Fedora Release 7 (32bit)
FreeBSD 6.2 (32 bit)
Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (64 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (64 bit)
Also, would using a control panel such as cPanel (I'd say Plesk, but very bad experience with it on Windows) be beneficial?
The above would be going on a single process Quad Core with 4GB RAM.

View 14 Replies View RelatedThis one may be a bit of a stretch, but does anyone know of a shared host who gives you both Windows and Linux hosting with one account? It is possible, as the company myhosting.com seems to offer it, and I think (mt) MediaTemple has some betas with it.
Update: Apparently MyHosting.com does it by giving you a primarily windows account with a linux sub-domain. That would work for me, but I'd rather a more known provider.
Differences between Websites & Domains and Webspaces
I'm a beginner in Plesk Panel and I've a "concept" question. So, which are the differences between Websites & Domains and Webspaces? There's some documentation about the definition of this three objects?
I want to restore a database from my repository. In the backup manager (root) I have Server repository & Personal FTP Repository. The personal repository I set to backup every day. The server repository I don't know where to set the backup option. There seems to be some random backups every 2 weeks or so.
In the personal ftp repository I have the backups of the last 7 days as tar files. When I want to radio button "Selected objects" it can not me highlighted. I am on plesk 12.0.18. (I ticked "Restore this backup despite the fact that it does not have a valid signature")In the server depository the files are .xml and there I can select what to restore but the backups are not current. I need the database from yesterday. How can I make my personal backups selectable?
During the installation of Plesk, at first it used the root password, and then had me create an "admin" user.
When I log in using either I don't see any difference in the UI or options. Is there a difference or a reason to use one over the other?
Or is it just to give someone access to admin Plesk without giving them full root password of the server itself?

I looked all over the web.....well google like 5-6 pages and found the answer but I am not sure I understand.
What is the difference from having [url]and [url]?
does it make a difference to the web user, is it a server thing.
I'm curious. I have read some stuff recently about Amazon, Mosso and other clouds. I know Mosso has switched over to a request based pricing model and I realized that I am not sure exactly what a 'request' is.
I think that a hit, as tallied by AWStats, Webalizer, etc. would be the same thing as a request, but I wasn't 100% sure if that was the case with Mosso. I actually contacted Mosso support (someone I know is considering using them) to ask them for clarification on a request. They stated that a page with two images would be three requests, one for each image and one for the page itself. I asked if it was the same as 'hits' and they said no, it isn't. This didn't sound right to me, because my understanding of 'hits' is the same as how he described 'requests'.
So, I figured I would just ask the experts on WHT.
I am looking to purchase either a VPS1024 or Hybrid1 server from WiredTree this Friday.
The purpose of the server is to house a fairly active phpBB3 forum (10,000 registered members with around 100 members online at any one time). Now what is the benefit of going for the more expensive Hybrid1 ($99 with coupon) compared to the VPS1024 ($71.20 with coupon) - thats almost a $30 difference in price?
In layman terms - am I going to get a greater benefit with the Hybrid1 over the VPS1024?
