I'm moving a large, 4 gig site between 2 servers (both have cpanel... if that's an option). Is there a way to do it quickly and correctly? How would I transfer such a large site?

I have a big website.
MySQL Size: 1 GB
Diskspace: 2 GB
It's over loading the server, so I am moving it to a dedicated server.
In the past, basically I would pause the live website (e.g. turn off forum). Move the data, turn everything back on in the new server and then change the nameservers.
But for this website, I don't want to pause the website nor I wish to loose any posts because of DNS propagation. (e.g. user might post data, which is stored in the current server. But then after propagation, the user won't see his post)
Im setting up a website that will facilitate people to be able to upload and download files.
As you can imagine a lot of people will be downloading so i need unlimited bandwith.
Also require maybe 1tb of diskspace with the option to expand wen needed.
Im not sure how cpu intensive this is but if people can recommend me specs, companies i should be looking for with links that would be very much appreciated.
to move a site to another server at another datacentre that have approx 100 GB of media files.
Typically for small sites i am able to use server to server ftp to move files.
However, when moving large site like this, ftp might be disconnected and lost track of which files are not transferred.
How can i transfer/move the files (server to server) and resume if disconnected?
I have to move some large websites from one host to another. The websites contain data about 1 - 3 GB, and my internet connection here is not that fast, so that downloading and uploading would take many hours. Unfortunately I have no SSH-Access to both accounts (old and new one), so I have to make it by FTP.
So I tried to make a tar file and moved it from the old to the new host. I made a tar archive of the whole webfolder (I used php to execute the shell commmands) and moved it by ftp to the new host. But now I´ve got troubles when extracting the archive on the new host: the extracted files are obviously created by the wrong user, so I can´t delete or access them by ftp.
So I´m trying to find other solutions to fix these problems. Maybe someone else had the same problems and could give me advice how to move large sites? Or do you know php-applications that can directly connect one host accout to another via ftp?
Scenario: Our website has 3 terabytes of data (photos, database files, etc).
1. How does one move all of this data from one hosting company to another?
2. How does this typically work? Does it involve buying the actual disks?
3. Does this need to be specified in a contract that's signed with the hosting company?
Copying it over the Internet (ftp, sftp, or http) is not an option.
I'm currently running on a VPS. My site allows for large file uploads and downloads, with files over 600mb in size.
The server has issues when the site gets three or more requests for large file downloads. I'm trying to grow this site to thousands of users and it is hard to do when the site can't handle even three.
I've been told by my host that I need to upgrade to dedicated. My VPS only has 512mb RAM and one large file download is eating up that RAM. This is causing the issue.
I'm a newbie and while I knew I was risking a bit by going with VPS I do find it a bit annoying that these guys advertise 1TB of bandwidth per month but I can't even support downloading 1GB at the same time....maybe it's just me...
Anyway, I am now looking into moving the large files and the upload/download over to Amazon S3. If I do this I am expecting my RAM usage on the VPS to greatly decrease. Is this correct? If my PHP code is running on the VPS, but the actual file download via HTTP is coming from S3, that should not be a heavy load on my box, correct?
any opinions on S3?
For some reason our dedicated server always slows starts to use up all of the ram (4gigs) until only 16mb is left. Even when the site isn't up, and there is a maintenance page! this is wacky.

All the files will be moved to my new dedicated server.
I'd like to use a new domain name for it, like newname. com
but still to not lose current memebers, still we want to keep bbs.mywebsite.com working as before.
I have 5 IP availble and want to allocate one of them to the new domain name newname .com

Now, question, what should I do, can some one give me instruction step by step please, to make 2 domains both bbs.mywebsite.com and newname. com working properly. don't want to use redirect.
Now what I can think of is, add newname. com to my account, and change DNS to point to my nameserver, then copy the whole forum under new website. I dont know if this way is correct. Then I don't know how to link the original forum address to the new space.
I am re-developing a website that launched 8 yeas ago. When the site launched it was developed in TCL and had an Oracle back end. The site's previous developer is still hosting the site on his server.
Long story short, we are re-developing the site on a new server at a different location. We'd like to re-launch on the old server (to help maintain Google search rankings), but we are developing in .Net and SQL. The old server is Linux. We want to maintain our ranking on Google since we are "Top Ten" on more than 20 great keyword phrases.
If we use a DNS forward from the old IP to the new one, are we going to loose rankings on Google? Obviously yes. But would it be beneficial to help the old developer buy a SQL server so the DNS forward is to a server 2 feet away as opposed to across the country? Does Google treat these equally?
what type of hosting do use big sites like Deviantart, or any kind of site with a lot of Gb or Tb. and how much it costs?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a website which has about 20K users, and now I am using VPS plan at LunarPages.
However, I have encountered a trouble of out-of-memory. Although I have configured my Apache and MySQL carefully, the 512M memory is not enough. Therefore, the users' expirence is not good these days because my site is very unstable.
I contacted Lunarpages, asking them whether I can upgrade my VPS to bigger RAM, but they said the ONLY way to get a RAM bigger than 512M is to upgrade to dedicated hosting plan.
The following are some stats of my website:
Total Members: 20k
Online at the same time: max 600, average 300
The Lunarpages VPS plan:

RAM: 512M
price: $42 / mo
Now I am not sure whether to migrate to didicated hosting plan, because currently, the main problem is just the size of RAM. Other resources e.g (CPU, network etc. ) are not my bottleneck. So I think it seems not worthwhile for me to migrate to the dedicated hosting plan with a doubled price (even more, almost 3x if I need 1G RAM), just for a larger size of RAM.
Can you guys give some suggestions to choose a VPS provider for my site?
The factors taken into my consideration include:
* RAM size: at least (1G for peak, 768M garantee). The bigger, the better. Nice if can choose larger size when needed.
* price
* bandwidth: 1T/mon?
* easy to upgrade to dedicated host: just in case that one day I will have to use dedicated.
* whether there are coupons for a lower price.
i've moved servers (joomla site).
only problem is that I'm on limited bandwidth internet, and i still have some really large files on the old server. can i transfer them to the new server without re-uploading them?
Im about to move servers as my old one was running so slow, but im worried about losing important emails in the change over. I remember reading something ages ago that said if you change a specific setting on the old server 24 hours before switching then when you switch the DNS will route to the new server quicker.
way, AVOID Stiletto Media web hosting. There support is useless and they have regular downtime, like 8-24 hours a WEEK. The servers are also incredibly slow. Dreamweaver constantly times out when trying to connect!)
I want to move around 20Gb of files from dreamhost hosting account with custom control panel to a cpanel VPS in another datacenter.
Is there anyway of transferring all the files to new host without downloading and uploading to the new host. Coz i have normal DSL and 20 GB downloading and uploading can take years.
There are some forum files CHMOD to specific values if you can transfer them without resetting them in new host also cool.

I have web site on one shared hosting. Now I want to move to another provider. However on first one I have around 500MB of emails which I would like to move also, because I only use web mail.
I found some instructions that I can copy Qmail's folders and emails and then restore them, but since this is something that providers will charge me for ($80 just for backup), I'm looking for another solution.
I was thinking that since both servers allow IMAP access, I could simply log in in one and another and then copy emails between folders.
- Would this work?
- When I log in with Microsoft Outlook, I only see "Inbox". I don't see "Sent" or other folders which I also have to copy. How to work around this?
Long story short, my web host is unreliable and after a down period of 3 days - I want to move my website to a new dedicated server.
Old Server - Fedora Core 6 with Plesk 8.1 (64 bit)
New Server - Cent OS 5 with Plesk 8.0 (Still to confirm version)
My problem is how to transfer all data from one server to the other? The most important item to backup are the emails, and the rest I can do manually. Ideally I would want to backup the entire server in a one, and upload it to the new one but I doubt that will be possible.
how to go about switching mail servers.
mail.domain.com is used as the MX record and is where users point their mail clients for POP/IMAP access. I'm obviously going to be relocating the record to a new IP.
My questions are:
In the interim period, can I have exim 'redirect' POP/IMAP connections to the new IP (for users), and can I have exim relay/forward (not sure on the term in this case) mail received from old DNS caches to the new mailserver IP?
I'm going to start moving all my resellers from one dedicated server to another.
I'm going to do it like this:
Suspend their account in whm, but instead of it saying account suspended, it will be changed to something such as "Account Transfer in Progress". This will prevent changes to db's, files etc which could be lost during the transfer.
Once all accounts have been transferred I will change nameserver IP's to new server. They can then use their accounts as normal on new server.
What I want to know is:
What will happen to emails that are sent while the accounts are suspended, will they bounce?
how I could transfer the accounts (150-200) with minimal downtime, I would be interested.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how you would physically move servers from one datacenter to another with minimal downtime?
The IP address is going to change, so the server will go off and then come back online with a new ip.
Just how much downtime is acceptable before customers get annoyed?
When is the best time to do it?

I am moving a couple clients over to my server tonight, but I wanted to make sure I took steps that they don't miss any e-mail that might be sent. It is my understanding that say the switch happens tonight at midnight. Any e-mails they did not download from the old server will be stuck on there correct? Because they would come in the next morning and hit outlook and download just from the new server?
Is there a set protocol for doing this move with minimal client hic-ups?
I currently have 2 DNS Servers with CPanel-DNSOnly Installed, used with CPanel's DNS Clustering options to store dns entries from CPanel web servers.
I am looking to buy a Windows server(probably with plesk), which i think will not support current CPanel DNSOnly Servers ?
What i need to do is
1. Migrate CPanelDNSOnly(which uses BIND) to TinyDNS on both servers
2. with a simple web-based management of dns entries(to give control to my clients, like DomainDNS.com)
3. and auto updating of DNS Entires from other CPanel and Windows servers, without conflicting same domain records from different servers (which i think can be solved by updating entires by Latest Modified date/time).

I have a question regarding status pages. Whilst setting up a new website, upgrading forum scripts etc what is the best way to redirect users?
I would like myself and one other person to have access to run the tasks, however I would like to redirect visitors to the website to a standby page whilst we are doing this.
What is the best method? .htaccess? IP based?
We recently moved all our hosting accounts from our servers to new servers with a new host. In the process of this move, after moving all the domains and setting the nameserver ips to the new ips, none of the sites are pulling up. I changed the ip for all nameservers to the ones provided to me by the new host but we cannot figure out why the sites are not pulling up, he says everything on his end is fine? Talking about 100+ clients who have been down for over a day now after changing the nameservers and cannot figure out whats going on. All we did was set the ips on my current nameservers to the new ips below.
Now they are claiming they can bring the sites up, but none of the clients I have talked to can bring them up. Also I cannot bring up any domains or ping them from my home or work.

The 204.16.247.150/~username works fine.

The accounts transferred over fine in WHM. We were using a dns redirect in WHM on the old server before changing nameservers to make sure it pulled them all up fine.

I'm moving from VPS to dedicated server, and I need to make the VPS ROOT as "Reseller" on the dedicated!
So, Is there any way to move all accounts from VPS to Dedicated once, then assign them to the reseller account instead of backup each account on VPS and restore it on the dedicated!

I was looking into a VPS with 1and1.com
Seemed to have good stats, and is a fairly large company. The plans were nice, was going to start off on their VPS 2 package with 20GB/2000GB, 245MB ram burstable to 512MB. All was well, since their packages seemed to offer the most for the least, if you know what I mean. I also liked the ability to upgrade the package without interrupting my service.
I read some posts here, and looked into a VPS even more, and now Im not so sure about 1and1.com or the thought of even having a VPS.
I have no experience with a VPS. So running it would be all new. Im not computer illiterate and I have taken many network and network operating classes. So I have some experience with command line linux. I have messed with some IIS, and a LAMP. On the other side, it scares me that I could f**k something up and bring down the site.
Now, for my needs. The site when launched has a predicted demand of a few thousand users over the course of a month. This is a business site, so downtime, and a shared environment don't seem to make sense. The site is very mysql intensive, at least by my standards. Most pages have 3-6 queries, main pages can have 10+, and most user actions include a few queries. The most load I could fathom would be all 1,000-4,000 users hitting the site hard for 3-4 days. This is now, next 'season' could be twice that load. In between seasons seasons we were going back to shared until the site starts making more money, and we fill in the off season with some other money making service.
The reason why I thought VPS was budget, and just we wouldnt want to be on a shared hosting plan, and somehow our demand was larger than expected and they shut down the site. So do yall think that a VPS is the right way to go? We have the budget to go VPS($40-$80) a month for 3 months, before going back to shared.
About 1and1.com: I read a few threads, some recent, that seem to say they oversell even a VPS. This doesnt make much sense since its supposed to gaurente those resources to me. The company is so big, but even these few posts and accusations are keeping me from commiting. My main concern is that between when we launch it and when our first spike of demand hits is only 2 months, so I dont want to learn that 1and1.com sucks firsthand.
Ive seen other hosts that this forum sponsers, so I assume there is *some* prefernce to use them, but like jaguarpc.com VPS plans seem to be a little more $ for a little less (storage and bandwidth) when comparing to other deals.
I currently have a VPS account with a company that provided an email service, so I just would refer my hosting clients to them for email. I hosted the websites and just referred the email to them. I'm moving to a dedicated server with VolumeDrive, and I'd like to be able to provide email on my own to my clients.
I'd like to see how others do this. Do you host everything on one server, website + email, or do you host them on separate servers?
my main client wants to rehash his database. Now this is a 1.5m strong list. All legitimately collected with time/IP stamp, privacy policy, etc. These clients are from the online gambling industry (legally licensed).
The problem is many of these users subscribed to our services up to 4 years ago (not all are that old, but some are), and they haven't heard from us for up to 2 years (again, some heard from us more recently).
Anyway, I've never deal with that number of emails and potential bounces. Obviously, the first round of emailing will have a large number of bounces, but that will quickly subside.
So, can you guys point me to a quality dedicated server, with at least 4 IPs (hopefully 10) and that can handle this type of activy? I'll be glad to sign up under an affiliate link if I can get a good answer.
