Which Distro For Vps Did You Pick

Sep 6, 2007

This is a tough question cause the distro you choose makes all the difference.

So my question now is if your choices were:

Centos 4 or 5 (32bit or 64bit)
Ubuntu (32bit)
Debian (32bit)

which would you pick and why?

on a side note I believe that the distro that gets picked the most is the one that has the most servers and if someone were to pick one thats not favored by many then he/she may get a faster server cause there wont be so many VPSs on it. Correct in this assumption?

Time For A Dedicated? And Opinions On Future Hosting Dedicated Servers?

Mar 26, 2009

Some information about my forum:

I run a VBulletin forum with - 575,614 post, 14,369 members and 2.9 million page views per month. On average there are 300 - 400 people on the site.

The server right now is a Linux CentOS VPS with 1.1 gigs of memory. The hosting provider keeps telling me that I need a dedicated server.

Question # 1 - In your opinion - do you think its time for a dedicated server?

The server I am looking at has these stats:

E8300
2 GB RAM
250GB HD
cPanel
Management

The price I was given is pretty good. So the offer is going to be hard to pass up.

Question # 2 - Has anyone here used Future Hosting for their dedicated server solution?

How To Pick A Shared Host

Apr 1, 2009

I've used two different shared hosts in the past. First host had little to no support and got slower and slower as time went on. Second host, has been fine for my personal blog and portfolio site, but the load time is way slow at certain times of the day.

How in the world do you find a shared host that is actually going to be fast? I know you don't want a host that is over-selling, but how do you know a host is overselling? I assume any host that is less than $10/mo and has unlimited everything is going to be oversold, but how do you find one that is going to be responsive. Trial and Error? I've been trying to read the reviews on sitepoint, but I feel like a lot of the time the reviewer is unaware of site load times.

I don't mind doing the research myself, but I can't figure out where to look or how to look.

All I want from my host is fast load times, all the time. I don't have huge traffic, I do have a lot of files, and it's very important when someone comes to my site it loads as fast as possible.

Obviously cheaper is nicer, but I don't mind spending a little extra to have a server that loads fast.

Renting Colocated Servers As Dedicated Servers

Oct 11, 2009

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

Failover Plan - If One Server Is Down, Pick The Second One

Apr 23, 2009

So, there is my example. I have two servers in different locations. First one is the main server with all the data and the second one has just simple notice like "We will be back soon".

Now, if I set the primary DNS server on main server and secondary DNS on second one (but with different A records), will users actually get the server two if main server is down?

Will this work or not? I want 100% access to the site, at least to the server with only notice (I don't need data from main server). I can set the round robin, but I don't need load balancing (actually I want access only main server), but just if main server is down to go on the second one.

Two Servers, One Website

Jul 19, 2007

I own a VPS through GoDaddy and I just bought a second for my website. My goal is to have all of the .zip files hosted on this second server, and all of the scripts, forums, and images hosted on the other. At the moment the server holding the scripts and everything works fine I just can't figure out how to set the second server as a file host for my domain.

Ideally, I would like to have the second server be FILES.DOMAIN.COM while the first server is DOMAIN.COM. I have no idea how to do this x_x

Website And Email On Different Servers

Apr 12, 2007

I have server A serving the website for my domain example.com and server B handling email for the same domain example.com.

Apart from one problem everything is working the way it should. The problem is that all email originating from server A (the one hosting the website) to someone@example.com is delivered locally (server A) and never gets out where it could be routed correctly to server B.

What needs to be done to deliver mail originating from server A to server B?

Database And Website On Different Servers

Oct 26, 2007

We have 2 linux servers directly connected by Gigabyte Ethernet. On a First server (192.168.0.1) we have a website (PHP5, Apache2), on the Second server (192.168.0.2) (CentOS 5 64bit, kernel: 2.6.22.9xe5u) we have MySQL 5.0 Database. A website from a Fist server connects to the database on the Second. The problem is that this system is very slow. We triet to move our website from First server to the Second and it works 50-300 times faster.

This is very strange, because when we print SQL queries of a website we see that some similar queries which are not dependent on a data or where there are very small amount of data, are executing in very different time.

For example:

SELECT t.*, tl.title, tl.content FROM site_tree_public AS t INNER JOIN site_tree_public_localdata AS tl ON t.id=tl.site_tree_public_id WHERE t.hidden='0' AND tl.lang_keyword='eng' ORDER BY parent_id, orderid
0.61763
after refresh 0.00365
another refresh 0.86579
another refresh 0.00302
another refresh 1.22748

Another example:

Four similar queries to four different databases (shemas), on one page load:
SET NAMES utf8 0.00021
SET NAMES utf8 0.00012
SET NAMES utf8 0.00012
SET NAMES utf8 0.20491

When we moved website to the Second server these queries are executing in a good stable time.

Also some following problems were noticed:

1. While connecting to the FTP, server slowed down and sometimes connections were dropped

2. We tried to install Ubuntu unsuccesfully - the network didnt work at all, then we moved to CentOs 5

3. When we first installed CentOs 5 with standart kernel we had experienced problems with network (IP's aliases just didnt work) then we installed newer kernel and the problem was solved.

first server - SM-XE2, SuperMicro 6014H-82, Dual Xeon 3.4 Ghz, 4GB DDR RAM, 2x72GB U320 SCSI RAID1, Dual Intel PRO1000, 1U
second server - SM-XEW, SuperMicro 6015P-8, Dual Xeon 2.0 Ghz (Woodcrest 5130) , 8GB DDR RAM, 2x73GB U320 SCSI RAID1, Dual Intel PRO1000, 1U

So the question is - what do you think about the problem? Did you use such a system - when a website is on one server and the database on the second? And what was the experience? Could it be kernel problems?

we think that it might be problems with kernel that dont work properly with network, please comment this.

Hosting One Website Accross Two Different Servers

Dec 22, 2008

how to host one domain accross two different servers that gives resliance and load balancing?

I know I could setup my domain on two servers and have two of the following records:

www.domain.com x.y.z.a (IP add 1)
www.domain.com y.y.z.a (IP add 2)

But the problem is users also access emails by www.domain.com/webmail.

Now the MX record is pointing to one sever as we want to gather all the emails at one point. So how do I get the users to go to one particular server for the email? I was thinking to alter the email url to something like

www.mail.domain.com/webmail which only goes to one server.

When To UseOne Server Or Multiple Servers For A Website

May 11, 2009

I need some expertise on how many servers we need for our site. Basically it is a flash interactive game where a heavy user might download 60-75 megs in a one hour session. Our hope is that we get lots of users, say around 1000 users an hour. Our current server is a AMD 3800plus dual core with 1 gig of ram. It is hosted through Aplus. I am just the programmer for the project and don't know anything in regards to servers, but my client wants to know if one server will be enough to handle the load of 1000 users an hour. Or should we run on multiple servers, etc.

Those Sub-$30 Dedicated Servers

I have not been looking for 2 years, because I was in other business. Badly needing a update on server industry now.

I thought utility bills are up, inflation is high, so it is a shock to see the price of dedicated servers are falling.

~$70 Dedicated Servers In US/CA That Allow IRC

Feb 15, 2008

Does anyone know of a dedicated servers in USA/Canada that allow IRCd, and the price is UNDER $70/mo.

A server that has atleast 1GHz of processing power is good, such as a (Dual) P3 or a Celeron, or anything better.
It needs atleast 512MB of ram, and atleast 10GB IDE/SCSI (SCSI preferred, not needed) HDD.
And with atleast 1TB+ bandwidth.

Netdirekt has a $50 server which is what I need, though its in Germany, I prefer a USA/Canada server.

Unfortunately as I am not using any advertising so my monthly budget is rather low ($50). Mirroring And Dedicated Servers

Apr 3, 2006

We’ve been asked to offer a technical proposal for a new established TV station, and the IT manager of the station has a long list of requirements, we covered it all, only one issues lift as we never done it before:

They want about 20-100 GB server for hosting and they want to have a mirror server, incase the 1st server was down, so it would redirect the visitors to the mirror server, I'm thinking of getting them a dedicated or semi-dedicated server, but how do you do the mirror issue.
Some one said to get two dedicated servers, but::

1. How we make it that when one is down, it automatically directed to the other, I believe there is software’s for that, so were do we install this software: the original server or the mirror server.

2. Should they be from two different companies and to different countries?

3. The web site will be with CMS and DB, how do you make sure that the mirror server have all the new data that was updated in the 1st server’s DB, do they have like shared DB or something, and how..

Any other information, links, or suggested hosting sites for reliable dedicated server (with big bandwidth) would be greatly appreciated.. thanx

P.S. We use PHP/ MySql technology.
