PHP And MySQL App To Test Host Performance

Jan 26, 2008

I have the hatchling plan on HostGator. Is there a PHP and MySQL open-source application where I can put up there to test its performance on running PHP and MySql applications? I want to see if there is any performance issue on this host before migrating a large ZenCart app to it.

What are people's experience on HostGator running PHP and MySQL?

Payment Methods

Jan 22, 2009

I am planning to build my own site, but the problem is that I still don't have a domain and a hosting site..

I wanted to buy one but they all requested for a credit card number.. I'm still a student now and unfortunately I have no credit card..

Does anyone know any other way of paying those hosting sites and registering a domain w/o using credit card or something..

Or maybe since i'm still new, should I go for free hosting then? but my site uses MySql for database, is there a free hosting site that lets you use a database?

Backup Methods

May 14, 2007

I am on a server with ssh disabled and automated cpanel backups disabled. I would like to back up all of my client accounts to my laptop in one go. So far, I think I've come across two options:

Option 1: rsync w/o SSH
I am not sure how to do this. Most tutorials I've found use ssh, and I can't figure out what other options there are.

Option 2: write a script that backs up all accounts and places them into a file on the server which I can then download.

Which option is better? Is there anything else I can do? I've been at this all day and haven't found a good solution.

Where Do You Have Your Test Server

Mar 3, 2008

We are a small development team mostly coding in php/mysql as an unpaid hobby. Anyways yesterday our test server had hardware problems and to get a decent new one would be $300. Well this seems a lot to ask for someone that does get any compensation for it. So we are looking for some cheap way of providing a test server. We need at least a way that provides svn, apache w/ php and mysql. We tried to use the webserver, but the head dev didnt like the idea. Any suggestions?

The three devs are in charge of wcreplays.com .

How Can I Make Sshd Lie About It's Accepted Authentication Methods

May 16, 2008

With my sshd installation, I have password authentication disabled, and only accept key-based auth. What I want to do is, make sshd lie about it's accepted authentication methods, or even make up a few to confuse anyone who's trying to connect. For example,

[root@vps2 ~]# ssh hah.cx
Permission denied (publickey).

I'd like to make it show something like,

[root@vps2 ~]# ssh hah.cx
Permission denied

JaguarPC Performance VS. LiquidWeb Performance

Jul 13, 2007

I am using dreamhost host 3 of my web sites and 1 blog. Dreamhost is great, offers alot space and bandwidth.

but I think they are oversellling their space, sometimes it gets really slow. (overselling ? ok, I dont really know, but sometimes its really slow, and most my asian readers said need to refresh to load the page. I am wondering if theres a way to check if they are overselling or not.)

I am thinking about buying vps, even tho, I still got 5 month left with dreamhost.

I found 2 vps companies are highly recommanded on this forum, JaguarPC and LiquidWeb.

theres already a post compared both companies in terms of price and service. I say I will pick JagarPc, cuz, its basic plan just 20 USD, and htey got promotion now, its even cheaper. and basic Liquidweb vps plan is 60 bucks.

I am wondering why Jagarpc is so cheap , are they overselling? how can we check if they are overselling.

I found a few posts saying how good jaguarPc is. and they are not overselling, but those members just signed up this month, and only have 1-3 posts. I cannot really trust those new members.

Can someone share their experience with JaguarPC? compare JaguarPc performance and liquidweb performance. antoher question is switch from dreamhost to JaguarPC basic vPS plan, will performance gets better?

last question: VPS account allows 3 IP, 3ip = 3 domains? if not, how many domains can I have?

VPS Performance / Server

Apr 12, 2009

We are getting into VPS hosting and wanted to get some opinions and feedback as we're quite unsure on what to expect as for performance and how many clients we can generally keep on a box.

For now we've bought 3 dell R710 with dual Xeon L5520, 72GB ram and 8 x 2.5" SAS drives.

We are thinking of a base offering of 512 megabytes of ram and
was hoping to get about 40-50 onto a server.

With 40 there should be -plenty- free ram and plenty drivecache.

Then a next offering of 1 gig ram and next one of 2 gigs.

Even if we do the biggest 2 gig offering with 25 on a server we should have free ram to spare.

The software would be virtuozzo.

Any thoughts on this, am I expecting too much, or am I being fairly realistic?

Not Passing Dnsstuff.com Test - Smtp Server And DNS

Jan 20, 2007

I have a question getting the setup of my DNS and email server working correctly.

In my mailserver, lets say I set the SMTP server to mail.BLUE.com. Through my DNS, I set an MX record for mail.BLUE.com and I set an A record for mail.BLUE.com to 1.1.1.1.

I create different domains on my mail server and give each an IP address. BLUE.com is 1.1.1.1. RED.com is 2.2.2.2. GREEN.com is 3.3.3.3.

Each domain is setup in my DNS as a forward lookup zone. Each domain has an MX record (mail.domain_name.com) and a A record (pointing mail.domain_name.com to it's IP address). There are other records of course... but they're not important for my question.

When I want to check or send mail from BLUE.com I use mail.BLUE.com. When I want to check or send mail from RED.com I use mail.RED.com. I do this for all my email accounts.

But, when I check dnsstuff.com on any domain besides BLUE.com, it tells me the following:

****************************
mail.RED.com claims to be host mail.BLUE.com [but that host is at 1.1.1.1 (may be cached), not 2.2.2.2].
****************************

Now... this can send and receive mail just fine... but I think this may cause issues when it comes to SPAM settings (some servers may consider our mail SPAM because we're "pretending" to be a different mail server).

So... here's my question... what's the best way to set everything up to run multiple sites and email accounts on one server?

How can I use 1 SMTP mail server (BLUE.com) and get my other domains to pass the dnsstuff.com test?

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: High Cpu Usage And Methods To Understand What Website Is Involved

Jul 15, 2015

from about 3-4 days, the cpu of my server, from an average of 0-15% load, grew up to a constant 80-90-100% cpu load.

There were two processes called php-cgi.exe IWAM_PLESK(default) that, each one, constantly burned 30-40% of cpu load.

So, stopping websites one by one, I found the website that was the cause of the cpu overload.

On my "old" windows vps, there were processes called with the name of the website hosted (for example websitename_web.exe), so it was easy to immediately find exactly what website was involved in the hypotetical cpu or ram overload issue.

Server Performance Optimization

May 7, 2009

Hi"Optimization of computing resources has long been an important management issue. One of its aspects concerns server scalability and the question of whether an organization should scale-up or scale out.Assume that the computing performance of the servers can be measured by variable 0 <=p, that their total cost is given by "c" and the relationship between server performance and cost is defined by c=αp^β"

a. What is the cost-performance elasticity(ђ), precisely?

b. What would be the range of values for ђ that would be expected by moore's law and what are its implications?

c. What would be the range of values for ђ that would lead managers to scale-out? Draw a graph and throughly explain the implications.

Worldwide Server Performance

May 2, 2009

We are a web-based Yacht Charter company, with offices scattered around the world:
www.boatbookings.com

Currently, both our web site and our back-office business management system are hosted on a single server in the UK, with an automatic fail-over to a server in Dallas, TX, USA.

The problem we are having is that our sales office in Singapore is having really slow response times and this is very frustrating for them.

Using an application called "JustPing" we see that response times From Singapore are much slower than other parts of the world. (the cities closer to London are fastest, the ones further away are slowest)
JustPing Results

Is there anyway to improve this or is hosting our applications on multiple servers the only way to improve performance. What's the best cost-effective method of multiple server hosting?

(Incidentally, if I JutPing Google, response times are fantastic worldwide, but we know they're hosted on many, very large servers)
