Managed Domain Name Server (DNS) ...

Oct 29, 2009

So i am planning to move my clients from one server to another and the problem is i want to minimize downtime or have absolutely no downtime. On top of all of this, i plan on moving the server again as i get more money to do it.

Anyways, here is the current situation....

mydomain.com has the following nameservers

ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com

My clients are also using ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com

I wanted to move my DNS to a managed DNS solution somewhere else and then do the change of servers. Would this be the right way to go about things? Or am i forgetting something? Would it be frowned upon the the hosting industry to have my DNS hosted somewhere else?

And last, if i do what im trying to do, how do i do it? lol.

I need to keep ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com still active.

Managed Domain Name Server (DNS). Whee?

Dec 24, 2007

i m going to buy country top level domain. in our country, its still a manual job. thats not a big problem. but problem is that, i can't change the name servers of the domain in future from web. I have to again submit paper based request to the authority.

but I want to use a better service. so, is there any good managed dns provider which i can use to update the DNS from web. I will submit their dns to the authority. then i can point my domain to anywhere i like using their managed dns service.

Managed Domain Name Server (DNS) Service ...

Aug 19, 2008

Source: http://www.hostdisciple.com/2008/07/...ing-providers/

I was reading Ross's article on DNS Hosting and was curious to see feedback from others who utilize these services.

We're an UltraDNS customer - Ross refers to them as the ferrari of DNS hosting, which I agree. We've been with them a few years now and I'll admit that we pay a very pretty penny for them to manage our DNS for a few of our larger sites. On the flip side, we've never once had a DNS issue and their support, when we've needed to engage them, has been outstanding.

Are most folks just using their control panel's DNS interface, or is there are larger contigent who are outsourcing their DNS management?

Managed Colocation Vs Managed Server

Jul 16, 2008

When a colo vendor can consider themselves as a managed colocation provider? What make them different than *normal* colo service?

If you need a managed colo, why not go with managed server? With managed server, your vendor will take care about the server health, including software and hardware too

(I am mentioning to fully managed server vendors like Rackspace, don't tell me cheap managed servers)

Same Domain Use 2 Different 3rd Party Managed DNS Services

May 21, 2008

Anybody using 2 different 3rd party Managed DNS services like dnsmadeeasy.com and ultradns.com on same domain name ?

Reason for doing it is because we are having resolving issues also the domain name is ".in" not ".com/net/org".

Now we have added nameservers of both the providers in the domain registrar control panel. Total it has 8 name servers now.

I copy pasted exactly same A records & Mx record and same ttl.

Q1) The NS records on both the dns services are Different. Should i add the 1st dns providers 4 nameservers in the 2nd dns providers panel and viceversa?

Q2) will this setup work anybody done it before .. does create problems?

Managed Server Or Not

Jun 5, 2008

In the future I'll be purchasing a few web servers. I was looking at The Planet because they're known to be the best, however I recently decided to go with SeeksAdmin for server administration and management as well as their outsourced support for my clients.

Question is:
Would it be a waste or wise to purchase managed servers from The Planet if I am using SeeksAdmin Management/Support services? If a waste, is there a centrally based US datacenter that can match the superiority of The Planet for only root level access servers with no management?

Low End Managed Dedicated Server

Jul 1, 2008

I'm trying to find a reliable and established host (not a junior company that may close anytime) that offers a low end managed dedicated server.

My minimum requirements:
2.0 Ghz processor
1 GB RAM
100 GB disk
250 GB bandwidth
Managed
Good support
Reliable and established host

I can't go with a VPS because the site I'm developing is growing very fast, there are some times where CPU usage is a bit too high. My current VPS host has asked me to move that site to a dedicated server, and they are right. With more CPU and memory the site will be alright, but I don't want to risk having to move again, so no VPS this time.

The reason I'm looking for a low end server is that the site is not self-supporting yet, so I can't afford to pay more that 150$/month.

If money wasn't an issue, I would already have picked Liquidweb, their current special allowed me to build a nice server for only 229$/month, but I'm not ready to commit that kind of money yet.

Dedicated/Managed Server

Aug 25, 2008

I am setting up a website that may generate a lot of traffic, though it is just starting out.

Since I'm not sure how easy the migration from a VPS to dedicated server will be (yes, I'm a newbie to all this!), I want to go with a dedicated server.

Since the site is going to be a revenue generator, I don't want to go low on quality - but don't want to spend over $150 pm.

I'm looking for something managed/with guaranteed uptime. A good bandwidth.

I will be running a MySQL database as well as the LAMP based website on the same server initially (later I may separate the database).

Shoutcast Self Managed Server

Jun 22, 2007

I am considering purchasing a self managed server for my shoutcast station. I have extensive pc and windows knowledge, however setting up a web server for my shoutcast station is new to me. I have set up & configured the shoutcast dnas for Windows before.

I am starting off with a clean no OS server.

1. use linux or Windows?

2. if it's linux which version? Centos, fedora..

3. What software will I need to monitor what is going on.

4. Secuity..

5. control panels.. what to use and will I actually need SCpanel?

I am not going to be reselling.. this server will be for me exclusively.. I will only be using this server for broadcasting via shoutcast.

Now, Please don't flame me.. these are rediculous questions for some. I happen to learn very quickly and could learn what I need within days. I learned computers this way, I was tired of paying techs to service my pc's. Now i do it all myself..

What Are The Importants For Managed Dedicated Server?

Mar 20, 2008

I'm thinking of adding Managed Dedicated Server in my services. I'm also currently looking for the right provider, so I can just simply resell his/her service.

But this is my first time to be involve on this service and I would like to ask some advise from the expert people of WHT.

-What are the important things that I need to consider if I offer the Managed Dedicated Server which is also offered by another provider? It's like reselling their service.

-What are the important things that I need to know for my possible clients? What are the usual requirements of many businesses when it comes of having managed dedicated server?

-What are the important/ideal security measures for a dedicated server?

Reliable Dedicated/Managed Server For 99/m

Sep 4, 2008

I have the idea to consolidate about 10 hosting accounts (1and1, dreamhost, etc), into one dedicated/managed server.

I was wondering what recommendations from reliable providers can i get, for about 99/m.

The accounts are very low profile, i mean, about 500 users at most for all accoutns (about 50 users per account).

The first option at 1and1 feels about right, [url] but i was wondering if there is something better.

And by better, i mean more reliable, better support, more "care for the customer".

i also thought about VPS, but checking the price differences, at least in 1and1, it doesn't makes much sense.

Fed Up With Hostgator Can Any One Suggest Best Managed Dedicated Server Provider

Aug 5, 2008

This is first time i am writing about hostgator using there service since 4 years.

I have 3 dedicated servers purchased with them within last 6 months and orderd for 4th server on 31st Aug 08. And now as business is growing i will need more and more servers every 2- 3 month. But its seems hostgator is not interested in business as they had already grown now. Even they don't care of their loyal customers who are them with years.

On 3rd day of orderd they told me my server will be deliverd within next 24 hours and on 4th day i contact them serveral times they keep on repiting they will upate and then they said server is out of stock and will be available soon and today is 5th day still there is no reply from them and when i contact them they clearly have no idea about it. Some says will get it soon and when i show my ticket. they say its still out of stock . When i contact with theplant.com datacenter they told me the server is available to order and are never out of stock.

I dont know whats actual reason.

Please help me guys to find good manage dedicated server host so i can cancel my order with them and go to another good company.

Server 2003, Managed, PLESK/Helm, Backups

Jan 8, 2009

One of my clients needs a dedicated server. I already know SoftLayer is really good from personal experience, but he needs both a Managed box and a Backup Solution, neither of which SoftLayer offers. I know they offer a 1Gig lockbox, but it's your responsibility to make sure files are transferred daily.

Basically what he needs is the following

- Server 2003

- As fully managed as possible because I am not on hand 24/7

- A control panel to handle everything. Plesk and Helm work. I'd say Plesk since they now seem to own HELM

- A backup solution at the very least once a week, once a day is better

- 24/7 Technical support with a phone number to call (not just ticket) in case of emergency.

Please let me know any suggests of hosts you use that were good. I have used many hosts in my life but only really liked SoftLayer (lacking the 2 features said) and AxisHost (no live number) so really need some feed back on this.

Backups: Managed Backup Company, Or DIY With Dedicated Server

Apr 1, 2009

We have 2 servers which run our website. One for data (about 50gb) and one for databases (about 5gb)

We currently perform offsite backups but we want to improve upon these. Our main objectives are:

1) Be able to recover as much info as possible in the event of a disaster

2) Be able to rollback to a previous version should we not notice a problem until later (ie 30 day history?)

3) Be able to restore as quickly as possible

4) Be able to afford it!

The options we seem to have are:

A) Use a service such as backupdirect.net which specialise in offsite backup and have specialised software to handle this. Obviously we get support, the backups are encrypted, etc and probably will end up with a much more robust backup solution.

However, it will take time to restore, if our server goes down we still have to get that working then perform the restore

B) Buy another dedicated server, which we can run everything on (albeit slowly!) and keep a 'live backup' on this server. This means we could switch to it should our main servers die for any reason with minimal downtime. Downsites would mean we have less support, would have to be careful with encryption of the data flowing from one server to another and we would have a less formal backup solution (eg harder to restore back to a point in time)

Managed Or Self Managed Servers

Domain Parking - Wildcard Domain Name Server (DNS)?

Nov 5, 2008

We have a lot of unused domains that we'd like to setup domain parking for.

To keep it simple, we'd like to just change the namesevers to ns1.domainparking.com and ns2.domainparking.com (not real nameservers!) and the domains would then automatically show a simple web page.

We use cpanel servers and are wondering how easy this is to do? I've seem mention of wildcard dns? Is that the answer?
