Linux Dedicated Managed Server Host
Jul 28, 2008
I'm currently looking to switch from my current web host. I have a managed dedicated server using Ensim Pro CP on Linux hosting.
I'm currently getting a quote from RackSpace but want to know of a few firms like them if that's ok.

Are there any providers out there that can actually attest that they are fully PCI compliant? Meaning, they know the meaning of the phrase, have looked at the requirements, has their network/servers scanned by a 3rd party, etc.?
I looked at the following document and the only recognizable host I see is Rackspace:
[url]
Our e-commerce software platform, merchant gateway, and internal network is and will be PCI compliant. But now I'm down to finding a managed dedicated web host who is.

how to check if you host has made their job correct ?
We are looking into a PCI scan just because of the security, we do not need to be PCI compliant, but the security standard is what I believe the most reliable to stick to.

I'm trying to find a reliable and established host (not a junior company that may close anytime) that offers a low end managed dedicated server.
My minimum requirements:
2.0 Ghz processor
1 GB RAM
100 GB disk
250 GB bandwidth
Managed
Good support
Reliable and established host
I can't go with a VPS because the site I'm developing is growing very fast, there are some times where CPU usage is a bit too high. My current VPS host has asked me to move that site to a dedicated server, and they are right. With more CPU and memory the site will be alright, but I don't want to risk having to move again, so no VPS this time.
The reason I'm looking for a low end server is that the site is not self-supporting yet, so I can't afford to pay more that 150$/month.
If money wasn't an issue, I would already have picked Liquidweb, their current special allowed me to build a nice server for only 229$/month, but I'm not ready to commit that kind of money yet.

I am setting up a website that may generate a lot of traffic, though it is just starting out.
Since I'm not sure how easy the migration from a VPS to dedicated server will be (yes, I'm a newbie to all this!), I want to go with a dedicated server.
Since the site is going to be a revenue generator, I don't want to go low on quality - but don't want to spend over $150 pm.
I'm looking for something managed/with guaranteed uptime. A good bandwidth.
I will be running a MySQL database as well as the LAMP based website on the same server initially (later I may separate the database).

I'm thinking of adding Managed Dedicated Server in my services. I'm also currently looking for the right provider, so I can just simply resell his/her service.
But this is my first time to be involve on this service and I would like to ask some advise from the expert people of WHT.
-What are the important things that I need to consider if I offer the Managed Dedicated Server which is also offered by another provider? It's like reselling their service.
-What are the important things that I need to know for my possible clients? What are the usual requirements of many businesses when it comes of having managed dedicated server?
-What are the important/ideal security measures for a dedicated server?

i am currently on mydediserver with a quad core server which is at this moment down since the last 15 hours.
the server guys seems to be totally helpless and i am waiting to get access to the server so that i can get my latest backups.
i guess i really cannot survive with a company which take 8 hours to respond to a reboot request.
i need suggestions for dedicated managed directadmin server. my sites were apparently attacked by sql injection crapware and i am looking for a company which can help me protect the server from such attacks.

I have the idea to consolidate about 10 hosting accounts (1and1, dreamhost, etc), into one dedicated/managed server.
I was wondering what recommendations from reliable providers can i get, for about 99/m.
The accounts are very low profile, i mean, about 500 users at most for all accoutns (about 50 users per account).
The first option at 1and1 feels about right, [url] but i was wondering if there is something better.
And by better, i mean more reliable, better support, more "care for the customer".
i also thought about VPS, but checking the price differences, at least in 1and1, it doesn't makes much sense.

This is first time i am writing about hostgator using there service since 4 years.
I have 3 dedicated servers purchased with them within last 6 months and orderd for 4th server on 31st Aug 08. And now as business is growing i will need more and more servers every 2- 3 month. But its seems hostgator is not interested in business as they had already grown now. Even they don't care of their loyal customers who are them with years.
On 3rd day of orderd they told me my server will be deliverd within next 24 hours and on 4th day i contact them serveral times they keep on repiting they will upate and then they said server is out of stock and will be available soon and today is 5th day still there is no reply from them and when i contact them they clearly have no idea about it. Some says will get it soon and when i show my ticket. they say its still out of stock . When i contact with theplant.com datacenter they told me the server is available to order and are never out of stock.
I dont know whats actual reason.
Please help me guys to find good manage dedicated server host so i can cancel my order with them and go to another good company.

We have 2 servers which run our website. One for data (about 50gb) and one for databases (about 5gb)
We currently perform offsite backups but we want to improve upon these. Our main objectives are:
1) Be able to recover as much info as possible in the event of a disaster
2) Be able to rollback to a previous version should we not notice a problem until later (ie 30 day history?)
3) Be able to restore as quickly as possible
4) Be able to afford it!
The options we seem to have are:
A) Use a service such as backupdirect.net which specialise in offsite backup and have specialised software to handle this. Obviously we get support, the backups are encrypted, etc and probably will end up with a much more robust backup solution.
However, it will take time to restore, if our server goes down we still have to get that working then perform the restore
B) Buy another dedicated server, which we can run everything on (albeit slowly!) and keep a 'live backup' on this server. This means we could switch to it should our main servers die for any reason with minimal downtime. Downsites would mean we have less support, would have to be careful with encryption of the data flowing from one server to another and we would have a less formal backup solution (eg harder to restore back to a point in time)

I am currently running a set of websites which is about 20 domains and as many databases. These are php4, mysql 5 websites.
/* rant mode on*/
I was hosted on 1and1 shared hosting but had to upgrade to their dedicated hosting due to constraint of 15 dbs max on shared.
The first problem arose when they said all the data has been transferred to dedicated (I have email proof) but after two weeks suddenly the darn databases vanished from my dedicated account. I checked with the hosting and they said the DBs need to be moved manually. I was pissed as hell but thankfully they came up with that morning's backup of the databases and nothing was lost.
The second problem that came my way was that Shared hosting had MySQL5 but the dedicated hosting only had MySQL4. This was pretty ironic as I was supposed to be upgrading.
Being weekend and all, I was in one hell of a tight spot. With client's and partner's breathing down, I moved the databases to a idle-sitting shared 1and1 hosts and got the sites running.
/* rant mode off*/
I am currently confused and scared as to how to choose my next hosting. I want a dedicated host because of the traffic on some of the more high profile domains. I would appreciate if someone suggested a very good host in £100 to £175 bracket, especially if you have been with him for a few years.

We were using Site Genie, but they received a DDoS attack that took down their entire datacenter, and in which our IP was one of the targets. They null-routed our IPs and told us they'd ship us the hardware we had in our boxes and we would need to find another host.
We had 2 servers with the following specs:
1.7Ghz AMD64
1TB of bandwidth/month
1GB of RAM
40GB drive
And paying $60/month each

I have a website development business with about a dozen clients. We do a lot of e-commerce work and design work. I have about 3 different hosts that we work with depending on the site. (Some of the hosts specialize in different e-commerce systems.)
I would like to start hosting some of my clients myself. I would like the server to be linux and we will be doing most of development work in PHP and MySQL. We hope to double our client list in the next 12 months.
Is there anyone out there that has a business similar to mine that can recommend going with a Dedicated vs Managed vs VPS setup. I like the idea VPS because of the price, but I'm not sure if a Managed system might not allow me more time to focus on other things. (I priced out a managed system with Rackspace)
I've been working on the web for about 10 years, but haven't been doing a lot of server admin stuff in the last few. I would like a system that is fairly easy to set up, use and get rolling. I would also like to have a system with good support. I've looked at the VPS system Virtuozzo by SWSOFT. It looks pretty good.

When a colo vendor can consider themselves as a managed colocation provider? What make them different than *normal* colo service?
If you need a managed colo, why not go with managed server? With managed server, your vendor will take care about the server health, including software and hardware too
(I am mentioning to fully managed server vendors like Rackspace, don't tell me cheap managed servers)

I want a reliable network. I would prefer having a dedicated 10mbit rather then 100mbps shared.
Server requirements:
Reliable fast network.
2Gigs of Ram
WHM
I will be hosting online games on the server so the latency is very important. Server can be either in UK or USA.
Budget: 140USD per month. Not interested in servers with setup fees.

what hosts are considered the best for virtual dedicated servers.
I know about the big names like GoDaddy and Yahoo, but who really has the best service and (importantly) the best price/value?
Heres what I need power-wise: Something that offers 2GB+ of RAM to me, 20GB+ Hard Drive space, and something thats running on Windows. I intend to run 3 e-commerce sites off this, so if you think I need more power please recommend it.

I am in the market for a dedicated server that is managed, here is some info to help narrow it down;
-Budget is $100-200 per month, can go to a maximum of $350 but prefer not to
-Website will be based on a blog platform and serve 5-40MB videos on a daily basis
-Need funtionality to limit bandwidth to avoid overages
-Need 24/7 phone support and FULL management in terms of upgrades, installation and security
-I'm not sure how much resources video use up in terms of uplink but i'm guessing I need 100MBps rather than 10Mbps. If i'm wrong let me know.
Other than that...i'll probably use Amazon S3 to offload extra bandwidth costs once I start getting too many viewers. If you need some more info then ask and i'll try to supply it.

I'm currently using a SiteGround virtual private server with the following spec:
OS:CentOS (Linux)
cPanel: yes
Support:24/7
RAM: 512 MB
Accounts: 1 main
Traffic: 1,000 GB
Price/mo: $99.00
I'm hosting x2 Joomla 1.5 sites using PHP v5 with the following extensions:
Sobe2
OpenX
Community Builder
Fireboard
Virtumart
The problem is that both sites have several sizable databases, each in excess of 100k records. After uploading the first 90k records to mySQL it became apparent that performance was going to be an issue. I'm therefore considering a dedicated server, tuned for returning fast DB results.
Firstly, would a dedicated server solve my performance issues?
Secondly, what are the critical components, spec wise, that would ensure superfast DB calls?
Like everyone, I'm looking for the best value, meaning solid support, uptime and a low monthly cost. I have been recommended the following hosting partners, but would like everyones input:
site5.com
rackspace.com
iweb.com
singlehop.com
servepath.com
superbhosting.net
Rochen.com

I'm looking for a managed server (mid range specs) and approximately 20TB monthly bandwidth.
I'm looking for reasonably priced hosts, that have a reputation "very similiar" to Rackspace.com. I don't want to quite pay what Rackspace's pricing looks like. So, I'm looking for something slightly cheaper than Rackspcae, but that have a VERY good record for promptness in addressing issues and with proven uptime records.
So far I am considering Verio & The Planet. My knowledge of hosts beyond that is very limited. Please point me in the right direction as to where I can find hosts with SOLID records like Rackspace.com, but are slightly less expensive.

I am hosting a few websites with my host, powweb.com (shared hosting). Now I am thinking to go for an adult xxx website, and my host is not ready to host an adult website with them, and thus, I am looking for a new host now.
Things are:
1. I have very little knowledge about server management, as till now my shared host was doing everything, so I may need a host who offers a completely managed hosting, including backups, security, etc (just as a shared host would do).
2. I need a host that allows extreme adult contents.
3. The site will be a new one, but I am planning to go for offline marketing and hoping that I will get a good amount of visitors. Also the site will offer online movies. Taking these things into consideration, I am thinking that I may need a host that offers unmetered bandwidth.
I would like to get some tips from you guys, and if any of you know a good host, thanks for letting me know as well.

I'm finally ready to move from a shared environment to a dedicated server. I don't know anything about server set up and management. Therefore I'm looking for a managed solution.
Reading through this great forum I found out that I can either go with a fully managed solution by the hosting company or go with an self-managed host and hire a third party administrator.
This will be my first dedicated server project. I would like to keep monthly cost below $400. Not necessarily looking for the cheapest deal out there, but rather for good service and stable performance.
I have heard good things about the Planet and liquidweb here on this forum. If I can find a reliable 3rd party management company I might be able to look into softlayer and/limestone.
I'm trying to decide whether I should go with inhouse management or 3rd party management.

i want to build a fileshering web site, i know from the start that trafic to my site will be high becouse it is not a regular file host site and i belive that i will have a lot of downloads as service will be mostly free of charge.
from what i understand i will need massive servers or at least good servers with high data transfer speed , reliable up time , very big storage space and massive bandwith.
i understand that budget should be high for this and i am not cutting on budget, i thought on first starting low and then upgrading but the low point of this poject will still need to have the best i can find both in speed ,storage and bandwith.
can you reccomend what service or way i can use for this project?
what servers rapidshare use? megaupload? i know i am still at start but i want a clean start.
