Recommend A Managed Host For Me (Like Rackspace But Less Expensive)

Mar 16, 2008

I'm looking for a managed server (mid range specs) and approximately 20TB monthly bandwidth.

I'm looking for reasonably priced hosts, that have a reputation "very similiar" to Rackspace.com. I don't want to quite pay what Rackspace's pricing looks like. So, I'm looking for something slightly cheaper than Rackspcae, but that have a VERY good record for promptness in addressing issues and with proven uptime records.

So far I am considering Verio & The Planet. My knowledge of hosts beyond that is very limited. Please point me in the right direction as to where I can find hosts with SOLID records like Rackspace.com, but are slightly less expensive.

Managed Hosting (Liquid Web VS Rackspace)

Jan 27, 2008

For reliable managed hosting, with some research, I can find...

Liquid Web
Rackspace

It seems like Liquid Web is definitely the bang for the bucks.. but it also makes me think if it's too good to be true. I feel Rackspace is more "professional" and they're more "high-end". But I definitely love the pricing from LiquidWeb. for the same price, I can get a quad core + 4GB from LiquidWeb, and maybe an AMD dual-core + 1GB from Rackspace..

My question is : Do LiquidWeb and Rackspace offer the same kind of "managed services"? Rackspace told me that they would give me an account manager which makes me feel more personalized. but I also had a live chat with LiquidWeb and the sales kept marketing the "Heroic support"

Let me give you some statistics of my site

Nature : E-commerce
Target : UK/Europe
Daily Visitor : 7000-13000
App : PHP + MySQL

Current Host Has Become Too Expensive

Mar 13, 2008

I've currently got a friend hosting me but I'm paying £5 ($10) per month ($120 per year) which is quite expensive for what I need.

I currently have two accounts- one personal FTP / Email and one shop where I'm selling CDs. So I need FTP / Email / and MySQL.

I'm winding down the CD store so I rarely get sales now, and I don't require much storage (couple of GB) or very much transfer at all.

Can anyone recommend a good host to me? I'm just looking for something reliable, the less expensive the better (Even free, if that's possible.)

I've been looking at Amazon's web services. Does anyone know if they're suitable for what I want? Their rates seem excellent.

Do Not Host With Rackspace

May 25, 2008

I know that this post will get deleted like the last ones but I'm tired of getting spam from a Rackspace customer. sendemedia.com keeps claiming that I "agreed to receive information from Consumerbase and our partners". Bull. I would never sign up for intentional spam. Additionally, they're using an email address that I haven't used in literally 5 years that only gets spam any more.

But I report them every time to rackspace.com. And, apparently, given that they never do anything about it, rackspace.com is just fine with the spam.

Don't host with them! WHT will likely delete / water down this post but if you read this do not support rackspace!

Recommend A Shared Host

Feb 11, 2009

Does anyone have any recommendations for a GOOD shared/reseller host? Geekstorage has had good reviews here, but I've been sorely disappointed in the frequent downtime I've had on two separate servers. Looking to move elsewhere soon if I can find someone else.
So -

Price isn't really an issue. I need at least 20GB of storage. Bandwidth also not an issue.

Please Recommend Host For $12/ Month Or Below

Nov 30, 2008

I'm finding a new host for my sites. I've searched the forums for hours but there were too many results, both positive and negative that I couldn't make decision . So, I want to ask you, who have been with WHT for long time and read the forum often about some good hosts you have experienced.

Details:
Hosting type: shared hosting (with option to upgrade to VPS)
Disk space: 30GB
Bandwidth: min 100GB
Host provider experience: >= 2 years
Budget: <= $12/ month
Could you please recommend some good hosts here?
If you are not so sure, I'll be very grateful if you give me a short list so that I can search for reviews one more time.
Thanks !
Note:

I may lift my budget a bit if needed.

Recommend Image Sharing Site Host

Jun 9, 2008

I already started a thread, and got suggestions about a host to choose. I selected HostGator, but when i read the TOS of HostGator, they do not openly allow image sharing and do not allow you to keep more than 50,000 files on their server.

So, which host do you recommend me. Please consider:

1. Low cost,

2. Reliability,

3. High shared disk and bandwidth

4. Allow image sharing. (I am not going to share adult images).

Recommend A West Coast Shared Host W/ A+ Customer Service

Apr 20, 2009

Couple days ago all of a sudden my host that I've been with for years all of a sudden went down the drain. Why? Supposedly, my site was used for spam? Stupid. They are "trying" to compile my database and files, but I DOUBT that will happen.

With an already 24 hour downtime. I am receiving a lot of emails and phone calls on site. I need my community to get back up asap! So I guess it's time to find a new host.

I need a RECOMMENDATION on a westcoast host that will provide me with great customer service and the requirements I need to run my community.

Must handle vBulletin real well, have the requirements I need, and have great customer service.

This is a local forum, which is why I would like to be on a Westcoast Host.

Recommend A UK LAMP Host - With Some Specific Mysql Privilege Requirements

Dec 13, 2008

I have a moderately successful site, which makes enough money to cover my current hosting costs of 7 per month. I know, millionaire row it ain't, but it's popular. But my database is getting big and my current host wont allow the user of EXECUTE and SUPER privileges which I need to run triggers and stored procedures to keep the page load times sensible.

So, I need another UK host with:

- 2Gb of space (the site serves up big PDF documents)

- 70Gb of bandwidth (I said they were big)

- mysql privs available as above

Customer service with my current host, uk web solutions, is great (apart from refusal to countenance the privileges) so I need my new host to be as good. Budget? well, you can see what I'm paying now, and I have a psychological £10/month barrier which I don't want to cross.

Adult Host, Managed, With Unmetered Bandwidth

Feb 6, 2006

I am hosting a few websites with my host, powweb.com (shared hosting). Now I am thinking to go for an adult xxx website, and my host is not ready to host an adult website with them, and thus, I am looking for a new host now.

Things are:

1. I have very little knowledge about server management, as till now my shared host was doing everything, so I may need a host who offers a completely managed hosting, including backups, security, etc (just as a shared host would do).

2. I need a host that allows extreme adult contents.

3. The site will be a new one, but I am planning to go for offline marketing and hoping that I will get a good amount of visitors. Also the site will offer online movies. Taking these things into consideration, I am thinking that I may need a host that offers unmetered bandwidth.

I would like to get some tips from you guys, and if any of you know a good host, thanks for letting me know as well.

PCI Compliant Managed Dedicated Server Host

May 20, 2009

Are there any providers out there that can actually attest that they are fully PCI compliant? Meaning, they know the meaning of the phrase, have looked at the requirements, has their network/servers scanned by a 3rd party, etc.?

I looked at the following document and the only recognizable host I see is Rackspace:

[url]

Our e-commerce software platform, merchant gateway, and internal network is and will be PCI compliant. But now I'm down to finding a managed dedicated web host who is.

3rd Party Management Vs Managed Hosting From Host

Sep 4, 2008

I'm finally ready to move from a shared environment to a dedicated server. I don't know anything about server set up and management. Therefore I'm looking for a managed solution.

Reading through this great forum I found out that I can either go with a fully managed solution by the hosting company or go with an self-managed host and hire a third party administrator.

This will be my first dedicated server project. I would like to keep monthly cost below $400. Not necessarily looking for the cheapest deal out there, but rather for good service and stable performance.

I have heard good things about the Planet and liquidweb here on this forum. If I can find a reliable 3rd party management company I might be able to look into softlayer and/limestone.

I'm trying to decide whether I should go with inhouse management or 3rd party management.

Why Is Hyper-V More Expensive Than Virtuozzo

Aug 9, 2008

I'd really like to find a Hyper-V VPS provider (or a Xen/ESX provider) and I've been stunned thus far to see each provider charging more for Hyper-V than Virtuozzo (e.g.

VPSland and Crystal Tech.). Why does this surprise me? Well, Hyper-V is included with the OS, whereas Virtuozzo is an extra cost. You might say, "But yeah, Virtuozzo gets around having to have a separate license for each OS install since its actually just one OS." Actually, that's not true, Microsoft clarified their licensing position and said that each instance does need a license. I'm guessing most hosting providers know this...So why the price hike?

Is Blue Square Now Getting Too Expensive

Apr 12, 2008

is Blue Square now starting to get too expensive for some if not most webhosts that dont already have a large customer base?

I can remember about 6 months or somthing back when rack space would to be around ~£580 for 42u but now its at £700 thats with 8amps and no transit.

Bluesquare is known to be a very good and still is a nice alternative than london, however I think now london has become a cheaper alternative, what do you guys and gals think?

Yes I understand the need to charge more as the data centre fills up to capacity, and to pay for BSQ3-4 which are opening soon etc but im just curious about what do people think etc, im not having a moan they do and still do a brilliant service regardless of price.

Why Is Colo More Expensive Than Dedicated Hosting

Apr 25, 2009

For the last few weeks I have been looking around at various colo and dedi offers here and there because I was thinking of saving some money by colocating a server and I noticed that everyone who offers both colo and dedi have things fixed so that the colo is much more expensive than renting a dedi from the same people in the exact same datacenters!

You would think that since a brand new server costs between $500 and $2500 to build or buy that amortizing of the cost of the hardware would make the dedis more expensive but in fact the opposite is true 90% of the time and only rarely does a host offer a colo plan that even matches their dedi plans. There are exceptions, like FDC for example but most of the time when you sit down and look at the price per mbps and the price per amp the colocation for a standard 8GB/quadcore/500GB server doing 2 TB of bandwidth is more just in monthly rental than if you rented a dedi(that the company owns).

So, in other words if I am renting a dedi with 8GB RAM, Quadcore CPU, 500GB hard drive with 5000 GB bandwidth quota on a 100mbps uplink for $125 to $150 a month and I wanted to save money by swapping it out with my own dedi of the same specs I would right away lose the cost of the dedi and then each month lose even more just in the colo fees along.

So what exactly is going on here? Are hosts overselling their dedis and making losses on a few but profits on most? And then on top of that artificially bloating their colo prices to encourage people to rent dedis instead? Or...do they just bloat colo prices out of fear and expectation that anyone who colos will be blasting their servers to the max and sucking up the mostest amps while using all the bandwidth that they buy?
