Installed A Script To Notify Me Of Root Logins
Apr 29, 2009
I got an email from my server telling me "tty1" has logged into root. Can anyone tell me what that means? Is this some sort of hack? Usually it tells me which IP logged when someone logs in not "tty1".

i am relatively new to Plesk, i ordered a vserver with Plesk a couple of months ago and spend a lot of time setting everything up and developing several new websites. I am used to developping new websites on a hidden adress (sth like domain.com/dev/ instead of the top level) and then switch the document root to point to the hidden directory when all is done. This practice has served me and my clients well for the last 10 years.
Using the Plesk features like built-in applications seemed like a good idea at the time but wanting to switch the new websites live i have now found out that Plesk won't let me do this since..It is impossible to change document root because there are web applications installed on this website.
I had read somewhere on the interweb that the v12 would let me do this so i just spent the better part of today updating to v12 .. but alas no luck, the limitation is still there. Is there a way to remove this limitation ?

I have a file that creates subscriptions , customers and domains. moreover, also installed wordpress to new domain. it makes it through the php file .
The problem I have is that when installing wordpress on plesk domain is installed in a subdirectory called wordpress in the root directory instead .
Is there any way of changing the php file that is installed directly to root ?
Ask this because from the plesk panel is done, there is an option through the file but can not.

What is the best way to get notified if a service has issues. I know I get emails from cpanel if a service fails, but for some reason for mail, it shows ipmap/pop is up but email is not being delivered.
I usually reset IMAP Server, Mail Server (Exim) and POP3 Server then everything seems to kick in and any undelivered mail gets delivered.
What logs can i check so find the issues, and also is the some type of listener i can use to notify me when there are issues with the mail server?

How to get plesk (12) to set the SOA record properly on existing domains?
Let me explain the issue first. We use PowerDNS supermaster mode as slave servers. The way this works is we configure PowerDNS so that it sees the plesk server as a so called supermaster.
When a so called supermaster notifies the slave servers on a zone update, if it doesn't exist it just adds the zone and pulls it in. This works very nice and without any scripting required (there's only the issue of removing them, I just have a script that deletes all domains that haven't been able to update in 2 weeks every day from the database).
The only issue here is that BIND does *NOT* ever notify the nameserver listed in the SOA. The nameserver listed in the SOA should be the master (and hence - thus plesk itself) and it being a master it should be where the changes occur and notifying it isn't necessary thus, which is why BIND doesn't do that.
Unfortunately plesk doesn't seem to grasp this concept. It will happily put any nameserver in the SOA record. Have adjusted the template and it seems to work ok for new domains now (not sure how reliably though), but it's a major pain for the existing ones. It's very hard to update them properly.
Reapplying template -> no change to master NS/SOA
Switching mode to slave and back to master -> no change to master NS/SOA
Resetting to default -> no change to master NS/SOA
The only way I've found so far is to delete the records manually, add them again and hope it doesn't change the order (yes it does this a lot, you'll have the correct order listed, click apply and the order just changes. Some times it adds them to the bottom of the list, some times to the top - not confusing at all).
Plesk really should be taught that if it's master, it should be the one in the SOA. Whilst my issue is larger due to the supermaster and slaves not creating the zone (and hence my slave not functioning), it is an issue in any setup because a slave listed as SOA will not be notified and doesn't pick up on the changes right away. Depending on the refresh times it might take quite some time for the slave to pick up the change then, which isn't desirable either as it will leave you with a slave that still returns incorrect records.

I have a site that has a members section requiring members to log in with a username/password through .htaccess & .htpasswd file. Just wondering, is there a way I can record their logins and ip addresses using PHP scripts or .htaccess? I just want to keep track of the logins so I can see which login is being abused and keeping track of them.

I have a personal dedicated server for family sites, but there seems to be someone or something trying to ssh into the server.
I have BFD installed and that has blocked the IP(s) after a number of attempts.
How can I change when it blocks the IP, say after 3 attempts or a certain number of attempts within a time limit, is this possible with BFD?

We are being required to turn off all non-ssl logins to our server. I have turned on ssl redirection, but that only works when access by domain.
if a user types in the direct port number either http://domain.com:2086
or http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2086
they can still get access to the non-ssl login page.
I need to be able to disable all port access to non-ssl login pages for ports 2086,2082 and 2095.
My servers are running CSF+LFD and i have tried removing the ports from the configuration, but i still can gain access.

I have DenyHosts to ban an IP after 5 failed ssh logins, and send me an e-mail when it happens. Ordinarily I average around 3 banned hosts a week.
I've gotten ten today. Four of them happened with a couple minutes of each other.
I'm just wondering if this is widespread, as if something new was just unleashed? Or is it just dumb (un)luck? I'm not really concerned; every account has a strong password.
I'm merely curious about whether or not other people have seen a surge in brute-force attempts?
(This machine is just hosting a couple of my sites, which get almost no hits... It's not as if people are specifically targeting me. It's just them guessing "alice" and "bob" type usernames.)

I migrated from one server running Plesk 10.4.4 Update #59 to a new server running Plesk 11 which I then updated to 12.0.18 Update #32. Since moving to Plesk 12 the "Notify when disk space/traffic usage reaches" emails have been being sent to our customers set up on the server whereas previously they were sent to the server admin email address.
Is this a change with this version?

VPS: Openvz, 512mb, 50gb hd, 10mbit shared located in Kansas.
Problem: After entering in my username / password I experience a 2-5 minute delay before the login is processed. I have tried logging in from 3 different ISP's (AT&T, Comcast, T-mobile via Blackberry), 1 webserver (ssh), and HyperVM's Java client. Each produces the same result.
Also, apps such as yum and traceroute produce the same long delays ranging from 2-5 minutes as though the vps locks up or the node has zero resources.
When I use the command center via HyperVM I receive the same long delays. Rebuilding the VPS does nothing. O/S has no affect.
Despite long discussions with the VPS staff they insist there are no problems on their end and that no one else is experiencing this problem. What gives?

I have read that although chained root ssl certificates can be more difficult to install they are actually more secure since the root certificate cannot be compromised, only the intermediary.
Is this true? It looks like both google and amazon both use chained SGC certs.

All my .php pages are returned blank because a developer I hired installed php 5.0.4 WITHOUT mysql support as you see in the following:
PHP 5.0.4 Info:
Code:

which OS have you installed on your server, and why?
what features of that OS attracted you to use it.
If you have any other reason like it is the only OS supported by xyz panel, share it, if you want to.

I have a problem with Fedora linux server. I have two copies of PHP installed.
Now I have problems with modules, which are compiling with new version:
Quote:
[20-Nov-2007 03:27:30] PHP Warning: PHP Startup: json: Unable to initialize module
Module compiled with module API=20060613, debug=0, thread-safety=0
PHP compiled with module API=20050922, debug=0, thread-safety=0
These options need to match
in Unknown on line 0
I've already removed all paths from bash and set only path to new version:
path=/usr/local/bin
Old version is in /usr/bin/
When I do phpinfo() after this change, I get old version info...
I wonder what should I do? Will removing both PHP and installing newest version will be a good idea or I can get more trouble?

I have double checked and port 21 is correctly set all places in conf.apf. Does anybody here know what might be the reason I suddenly can't log in to the account using my FTP client. Neither with the account password or the root password. Any help is gratefully received.
