Exchange/Push Email Query

Oct 25, 2008

I own a small company of 15 people who are all based remotely at their own homes throughout Europe.

Most of us are based in the UK and our web hosting server names.co.uk provide our email and web hosting service but we do not have an exchange server with them.

Now most of my colleagues own blackberry's which i just dont get on well with and I have my eyes set on buying a windows mobile device with Push email, namely the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.

Anyway my query is this:

How do i go about getting exchange included to my hosting setup? Can another company host it or do i have to transfer my web hosting and email hosting to another company which facilitates exchange as well?

IMAP Email With MediaTemple

Apr 10, 2005

Is anyone else out there hosting IMAP email with MediaTemple? I am trying to transfer IMAP accounts to MediaTemple after switching from an email only provider, MailSnare. I use Mac Mail as my email client and am having trouble getting my accounts set up properly. It seems to have to do with my path to IMAP.

I've tried everything including:

(blank)
/mail
mail/
mail
INBOX.
INBOX

Different techs at mediatemple told me to use /mail and INBOX. but neither work properly. For the most part, I have been able to see my mail, but not my folders, or not all of my folders, or I've gotten repeated warnings that IMAP command "SELECT" failed. In one of my accounts now I can't see the mail at all, but the account is telling me there is 1 unread message. My problem seems to have been complicated by all the messing around with the preferences trying to fix things. If it makes any difference, the email address for the account is the same as it was with my previous host. I wonder if that's causing a problem when trying to access the mail in Library/Mail?

Want To Setup SSL For IMAP Email And Their Cpanels

Feb 8, 2008

I have a couple questions maybe some of you can help me with -

I have a dedicated server and many hosted customers, I want to setup SSL for IMAP email and their cpanels.

Instead of purchasing individual SSL certificates for each domain. I was thinking to just use my hostanme (eg host.myhostname.net) and direct them to that as I have seen the option in WHM.

My question is can I use an SSL cert for email that will act as a "fleetwide" SSL cert?

For example instead of using mail.theirdomain.com could I just use mail.myhostname.com and would it give them SSL without warnings? Of course they would set their email client to mail.myhostname.com..

Is it safe or recommend to use your hostname? I read somewhere to never use your hostname as a domain.. so not sure.

Looking For Large Capacity IMAP Email Hosting

Jul 22, 2008

I would like to find a host with good quality & uptime that has large disk capacity for hosting IMAP email, about 10 to 20 gigs in size per domain.

I know of places like Bluehost and powweb but I'm not crazy about the 'overselling' issues related to them....

Any Ideas?

Need Advice: Very Reliable Email, IMAP, Storage, Small B2b Business

Apr 2, 2008

I'm looking for quality hosting at the right price for a small business. I have been searching these forums, but just got no conclusion, and would appreciate any advice concerning 'features' and 'providers' that I shall look at or avoid.

My needs are:

- very reliable email, with IMAP, good spam filtering, and ability to handle Challenge Response type system;

- rSync and storage of company internal documents (intranet like);

- host a small static website of a small b2b company, with little but valuable traffic;

- handle multiple (non limited) addon domains;

- for the near future: mysql, Ruby on Rails (need to explore it), Python and a good Content Management System;

- good stats tracking tools -- ability to log a list of sessions would be great;

- control panel doesn't matter, ssh would be nice;

- datacenter location doesn't matter too much, connectivity, reliability, and uptime do;

- 5~10GB storage mainly email and internal docs;

- 1GB traffic mainly email;

- preferably with a community forum - I trust more on those who have it, and have nothing to hide;

Do you think I can get something reliable for under $10/month or $100/year ?

I have found these options:

GeekStorage - looks great, LiteSpeed is appealing, people behind it look experienced, I was almost signing for it when I was caught by several issues with long downtimes (over 24h) during the last 2 months;

MediaLayer - also offers LiteSpeed, good comments by many on here, but no listed prices - why hidding the prices? are they trying to screw our bucks? that doesn't sound good to me;

HostGator and LunarPages - very popular, but they don't seem the thing for me, maybe for those with blogs, forums, or GoogleAds oriented websites, I get puzzled how can they offer 600GB for $7.95/month !?

FusedNetwork, Steadfast, DowntownHost and many others - seem to be oriented to lower storage and higher traffic, the opposite of my case.

I know I can get dedicated storage services, but a large amount of my storage need is for email which need to be synchronized through IMAP. BTW, can IMAP be used to synchronize files beyond messages?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: IMAP Incoming Email - Connection Error

Oct 15, 2014

I have a client with a dedicated server running. Spec below.

The problem I am having is with incoming email. When I set up a new email account it can take about 10 attempts to log on to the incoming mail server. Once it has connected it will be ok for a short while then I will get a connection error and no emails will come through.

This is happening across all platforms, PC / MAC / iPhone and iPad.

I am a web designer with limited knowledge of the setting up of the server and was looking to set up email server within plesk.

How Much Bandwith Can You Really Push Through FDC's VPS

Dec 6, 2008

i see that there is 84/month and a 119/month VPS, which offer burstable 100mbps unmetered...i also heard they use shared line.

so what is the max bandwith that i can really push in a month ? i am okay with users loading the site @ 100kb/s, especially because the site has lot of videos through flash player, and 100kb/s or even 50kb/s sounds good.

if there are anyone that can beat FDC than please refer me to them!

Horde Mail IMAP :: Auth_imap: Required IMAP Extension Not Found

Sep 2, 2007

I'm having trouble with horde it is giving me the following error:

Auth_imap: Required IMAP extension not found.

Now I pretty much know why that error is coming up I'm missing the IMAP module. What I don't understand is if it was their before why is it gone now. The last thing I did on the server was upgrade Perl.

I would like to get rid of this error but I'm afraid the only solutions will wipe my current setup. If of course their is a way to fix this error without ruining my current setup that would be a lot more useful

The main thing I want to do is retrieve an address book from the horde server. How would I go about finding where the address book is stored through the command line.

Thanks ahead of time for the help.

How Much Can You Push Power Limits

Dec 28, 2007

We just moved to a new colo facility, and we also added some additional servers as part of the move. Our cabinet has 2x 20amps power, which is fed into 2 APC AP7930 PDUs. The PDUs have printed on them a 16a limit, though from looking around the datacenter, I see some people are doing 17a on the same PDU with the same power feed.

How much can you realistically push the limit? Currently we're at 13a on each PDU, but there are still more servers to be powered up. Does the PDU shut down altogether for an overload, or can you have it just power down some ports automatically?

Apache :: Create Rewrite Match 301 Rule To Push Long URL To Shortened URL Permanently?

Jan 30, 2013

I am using the following mod_rewrite rule for shortened SEO friendly links: RewriteRule ^blog/([^/]*).html$ /blog/blog.php?pid=$1 [R=301,L]

For Google SEO reasons, will the shortened rewritten link created from above be the permanent link, from the R=301? Even though the longer link is still functional? Or, do I need to create a rewrite match 301 rule to push the long URL to the shortened URL permanently?

Email, And 2 Servers

Oct 13, 2009

I run a cpanel server, lets call it coffman for the time being.

I have all my name server set to:
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com
ns3.domain.com
and
ns4.domain.com

I am running this on a "Centos" 5.3 system with cpanel.

I also have a vps, also known as a "3linode". We will call it "communication". I have had to reboot my web server, and can not have even that five minutes down off email. I am curious:

a: i have on "communication" "Debian"

b. I want to be able to keep the "domain.com" on the main "centos"5.3 system.

c: I however, want all mail sent to an @domain.com moved to the "Debian" system.

d: I also have staff members, and at some point, i hope to host a few things on the Debian system, so will then want to have the ability to set for example, staff.domain.com to go to the Debian system.

Website And Email On Different Servers

Apr 12, 2007

I have server A serving the website for my domain example.com and server B handling email for the same domain example.com.

Apart from one problem everything is working the way it should. The problem is that all email originating from server A (the one hosting the website) to someone@example.com is delivered locally (server A) and never gets out where it could be routed correctly to server B.

What needs to be done to deliver mail originating from server A to server B?

Hosting EMail And Web In Different Servers

Jan 4, 2007

I'm experiencing some issues that I thought were something normal, or something that you could expect when working like this, but I think that it is something that should NOT happen.

We own a dedicated server, where we host some sites we develop (around 80 right now). We usually host both email and web page in the same server, but recently we had two customers who wanted to host email in a different place. The first one has its own server with proxy, and the second one is waiting the previous company to change DNS values.

The problem shows when we try to send an email from ANY domain hosted in our server, to one of these domains. From Outlook, the error is something like "no such user found", but the REAL problem comes when a PHP script (usually a contact form) tries to send the email. This mails get simply lost, and the customer never receives them.

My question is: What do I configure, or how do I do so my webserver looks for the real DNS, instead of trying to send the mail directly to the local domain?

Sending Email From Remote Servers

Apr 2, 2009

My company's domain is mycompany.com and we are hosting our corporate website in our own datacenter.

Now I want to create another website subdomain, site1.mycompany.com, to be hosted in an external third party datacenter.

Is it possible for me to send out email from the third party servers using the address info@site1.mycompany.com? I do not want to spoof any outgoing mail.

Moved Servers - Major Email Screw Up

Sep 18, 2008

I host a handful of domains, using a whm/cpanel setup. It came time for me to move to a new server, and here's the process I took:

1. I created accounts for all domains on the new server.

2. Created all relevant mail accounts for each domain on the new server

3. Restored all of the files for each sub account on the new server

4. Updated the DNS for each sub account to point to the new server

I didn't, however, move my main domain to the new server yet. On top of that, I use Google to manage the mail for my main domain.

Now when I try to send email to one of the accounts for any sub domains (that is on the new server), the email bounces back as undeliverable.

2 Email Addresses On The Same Domain But Using Different Mail Servers

Feb 8, 2008

I'm trying to see if it's possible to have 2 email addresses on the same domain (e.g. email1@domain.com and email2@domain.com) but are handled by 2 different email servers (e.g. mail.domain1.com and mail.domain2.com)?

To put it into context, I have a domain hosted on my dedicated server and a couple of email accounts set up on it. I also have another mail account set up on a different server but with the same domain. I was wondering if maybe something could be done with the DNS to allow the 'external' mail account to be handled by the other server?

Hardware: Db Servers, Web Servers, File Servers. Cpu, Ram, Disk

Jan 20, 2007

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.

we plan to have three different types of servers:

- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)

- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)

- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)

could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.

for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...

for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?

for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?

I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.

also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?
