Considering Hostmonster
i frequently read these forums for offers/to stay up to date with web hosting in general. I never felt the need to register until now. I have experienced what i believe to be sub-standard service from my paid hosting. Here's what happened: I got up, as usual to check my emails and i was hit with the following email Your web hosting account for xxxxxxxx has been deactivated (reason: terms of service violation). Although your web site has been disabled, your data may still be available for up to 15 days, after which it will be deleted. If you feel this deactivation is in error, please contact customer support as soon as possible. Thank you, HostMonster.Com Support xxxxxx (couldn't have url's in this post) For support go to xxxxxx Toll-Free: (866) 573-4678 I checked my domain, it returned nothing. I don't believe that i have committed any terms of service violation and i am quite peeved off with the results. My account was just suddenly deactivated with no warning, my domain (also registered via them) no longer works (i have no way of telling current visitors whats happened, the domain just wont work) and i have 15 days to contact them (via email) as phone is not an option as i live out of the US. Not to mention after all that, i wouldn't review host-monster very greatly at all for speed, at first it was great but it just kept degrading from there until it was just extremely poor. One thing they did do right was refund me (but i bet it doesn't include the domain) so ill be taking that money and my business else ware.

Hostmonster And Emails
In general I have been happy with hostmonster. Mostly because their support staff is polite and are willing to help. However, I do question the server reliability at times. Lately when a customer registers at my forum or gallery, the customer does not get the activation email 4 or 5 hours later. Today, I tested it and sure enough, the activation email took 4 or 5 hours before it came. I talked to tech support and they acknowledged they had over 250,000 emails backed up. That there are too many connections with hotmail accounts and that was causing a problem as well. A customer having to wait 4 or 5 hours before they receive an activation email seems a bit long. I'm not sure if hostmonster is going to do anything to prevent this from happening in the future, but for now they seem to be satisfied with the emails backing up on the server and the time it takes for them to be sent. They indicated this does not happen often, but I really don't know since I don't send myself emails on a daily basis. I would rate email as one of the most important functions there is for a webmaster. Otherwise, hostmonster staff has been responsive and my hope is this will not be a constant problem. If there are any other hostmonster webmasters out there, I would appreciate your feedback. You may have to send yourself a registration or a email to test it.

Hostmonster - Site Shutdown Because Its Busy
Wanted to share a bit (read vent a bit if you're cynical ). Just got the following e-mail from hostmonster. ----------- Dear Dale: Your web hosting account for ibycus.com has been deactivated (reason: site causing performance problems). Although your web site has been disabled, your data may still be available for up to 15 days, after which it will be deleted. If you feel this deactivation is in error, please contact customer support as soon as possible. Thank you, Support For support go to Toll-Free: (866) 573-4678 ------------- Apparently, there are two files on my website that are being hit quite a bit, and causing the server to slow down. (I admit, its a busy site, and the files are very big). The files aren't new there, and neither is the traffic, but the plug was pulled with no warning what so ever, and no offer of remediation on their part beyond refunding the remaining portion of my contract (I would hope so too!). I can understand that they may not be able to continue to host my site due to the volume of traffic it generates, but they really could have handled this much better.

VPS Loads
I have a VPS from KnownHost for about a year for developing purposes. Great place to go for VPS's, by the way. Anyway I just installed a game server on it and now the loads are about 0.5 when I do a "top" command. Should I be worried? The server isn't really used for anything right now, that is why I am using it as a L4D server. Max 8 people on it.

VPS Loads
I was wondering about a specific VPS package I was considering. I have around 80~90 sites (and therefore accounts) that I need a nice place to call home, but I am wondering if maybe I would be asking too much of this VPS package: 40GB Disk Space 1000GB Transfer P4 3.2GHz 800MHz Front Side Bus 1GB Guaranteed RAM | 2GB Burst RAM CentOS 4 50% of CPU Guaranteed | Burst to...I don't remember. All of the sites I would be hosting easily take up less than 100MB of space each. The most any of them use is 2-5GB of transfer. I know these levels are no where near my allotted resources, but do you think that serving 80-90 accounts like this is too much server load? There will only be 2 VPS' on each server, guaranteed. Anyone with experience with a VPS and a decent set of accounts/domains, please let me know what you think.

Long Page Loads
I have a server running SUSE. dual quad core chips, 16 gigs of RAM. It's a webserver only running Apache. We have been having a problem the past few days where page loads take forever yet CPU load and RAM load are very, very low. I've noticed when it happens when viewing HTOP that TASKS jump from about 350 average to 1000 average. Pages won't start loading until this number drops. I see no errors in error_log or messages however restarting Apache seems to fix the issue? I've tried messing around with KEEPALIVE settings with no help. Any clues on where to start? Pretty lost on this one becuase I see no errors and the load both CPU and RAM are low.

High Loads At Exactly The Same Time Everyday
has anyone else noticed an unusually high load occurring from 9 till 11 EEST time on their servers? I've been getting high loads everyday this week at exactly these times. I'm thinking that this is a crawler/bot that is causing the loads, i've already installed dos deflate and there hasn't been more than 100 connections from the same ip, so I'm ruling out any DOS attack ... besides, what kind of attack only takes place for 2 hours a day at exactly the same time? I'm on a cpanel system and would like to know which logs to take a look at to determine the cause.

Extremly High Loads And CPU %
I normally don't like too bother others with my problems but this time It seems I have no choice since I spent the whole afternoon trying to find out what the problem was and couldn't solve it "entirely". Here's some hardware info: Processor Information Processor #1 Vendor: GenuineIntel Processor #1 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 3050 @ 2.13GHz Processor #1 speed: 2133.418 MHz Processor #1 cache size: 2048 KB Processor #2 Vendor: GenuineIntel Processor #2 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 3050 @ 2.13GHz Processor #2 speed: 2133.418 MHz Processor #2 cache size: 2048 KB Memory Information Memory: 1031324k/1048320k available (2182k kernel code, 16308k reserved, 914k data, 240k init, 130816k highmem) System Information Linux **************** 2.6.20-1.2320.fc5smp #1 SMP Tue Jun 12 19:40:16 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Running Fedora Core 5 and working for over half year with almost no major problems, but today something totally weird just happened... After waking up I logged to the server and realized how slow it was, I went to see more about that and for my surprise the loading was around 8 so I went to the mail queue to see if there were a few thousand mails, there were 16 mails... So I went to the see CPU % processes at WHM and I was stunted to see around 30 processes allegedly using over 11500% of the CPU or more! My first thought was that cPanel smoked something before releasing a last update and I didn't realized it immediately so I downgraded from Release to Stable. Nothing happened and I lost my time with this overheated overloaded and over-everything and I didn't changed any configuration. I changed many old configs that... I don't know, might crashed with something that might changed... I was trying and looking for anything. The load was getting up instead of down, it went up to around 60. The final conclusion is that whenever I turn the MySQL on I got overwhelming loads otherwise the other services "only" give me around 1.5 of load but still very unstable. I'm getting a little tired so my explanation may be a little confusing, sorry about that. Anybody knows what this is? Did this ever happened to you? Extremely high loads without an obvious reason? If anyone could help me I would be thankful for that, I'm getting kind of desperate.

Server Optimization Help Request - VERY High Sudden Loads
We just upgraded to VBulletin 3.6.5, and are experiencing strange behavior. My forums are on a dedicated server, 27,000 users. We'll be running along fine with loads of .5-2.00, etc. Then suddenly, the loads start climbing to 50, 70, 85+. We've been trying to figure out why. We even went on a different (much more robust) server, still the same result. This only started happening after the upgrade. Restarting the server corrects the problem, but only until it happens again. It can happen at anytime - during peak or off peak. The server may run for an hour or two until this happens, or it can happen 10 minutes after a restart. Late last night when loads were normal we benched the server hard, and it ran just fine. We just can't figure out where this load spike is coming from. KVM Over IP System

The HP iLO has performed absolutely flawlessly but the DRAC on the other hand has been nothing less than a complete nightmare. I'm looking for a KVM over IP system that we can connect to multiple servers, mainly Dell, that is 100% reliable and completely stable. Not something that will be giving Java errors randomly when you actually need it to work. So far I've came across the Raritan Dominion KX II which looks pretty promising. System Clock Off Continuously
One of our server's system clock seems to gradually creep away from the correct time. It has been causing us a lot of issues. After one day it becomes more than one hour off. After each minute it becomes a few seconds off. Any ideas what could be causing this? It's uptime is ~2 months so it doesn't happen when it goes offline, it happens while it is running. Right now we have a cronjob running ntpdate every few minutes as even with the ntpd service running it would end up off by several minutes when we would check. I have a feeling this isn't a very reliable fix though.

Server Became Read Only System
I had a linux server (CentOs 5, mysql5, php5, directadmin). I had problems with apache few days ago, that's why i hire sys. admin who tweak the system (install the PAE kernel), and some more configurations, and during last 7-8 days server work w/o any downtime (before this server had 1-2 downtimes per day-> OOM killer.) Now i had only ssh access (emails, directadmin access - give "wrong password" answer). As told my sys.admin It became read only system. I cann't even reboot system Quote: [root@server sa]# reboot reboot: /usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2) such few commands work, the most commands that i know don't work Quote: [root@server ~]# ls -la ls: error while loading shared libraries: libacl.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

System Health Monitoring
I am wondering if anyone knows of any good system monitors for Linux. I will be installing several web and database servers at a branch office and would like to receive stats like system temperature, cpu load, memory usage, etc. Basically something to tell to warn me in the event of a hardware error. I am looking something with an easy-to-use web interface and ability to generate reports.

VZPP - System Usage
I have a VPS with 512mb guaranteed memory. From VZPP, my Resource Capacity(System Usage)is using >50% even when I don't have any active sites at all! Support staff trying to convince me is normal as apache, cpanel etc are using resources. Yes, I agreed they use up resources. But at >50%? What will happen if I just have an active site, wouldn't it hit 100% and I have to upgrade immediately for more resources? I think is more of nodes or some setup issues then "is normal". What is normal "system usage" for new VPS with no website on it.

Phone System Checking
I'm thinking to implement a solution for our VOIP system so that automatic calls should be done several times a day and to check that someone is responding or that it's ringing. We are using AsteriskWin32 for now and for our needs it's working great.

Changing System Date
We have a server located in USA. We have hosted an application for online booking of travel tickets. The customer wanted to change the system date to IST instead of EDT which we did. Now, if we try to change the system date to a future date in order to test our application, the date automatically resets to the current date. This happens only if we have the timezone as IST. If we change the system date to EDT, then after changing the system date, it does not reset automatically. It changes only if we modify it manually. However, if we change the timezone to IST, then the system date resets automatically back to the current date. We have stopped the W32 Time service and also blocked the port 123. We have also disabled the automatic synchronization with the internet time server.

Setting Up RAID System
I've never loaded Linux onto a RAID array before, I have an Adaptec 2105S card, with 3 x SCSI HDD's attached, in a RAID5 setup. When I boot the Cent OS Server 4.4 CD, it says I don't have any hard drives attached. I am then prompted to select a device driver, but it does not show up in the list. The options in the list are: - Adaptec AACRAID (aacraid) - Adaptec AHA-152x (aha152x) - Adaptec AHA-2740, 28xx, 29xx, 39xx (aic7xxx) - Adaptec Aic79xx SCSI Host Bus Adapter driver (aic79xx) - Adaptec SAS/SATA Host Bus Adapter driver (adp94xx) It says if I have a driver disk, hit F2. The problem is that I don't have a driver disk. The manual tells me to visit [url]for drivers, but it's not offline. When I go to the download section for the card [url]the only *nix option, is SuSE.
