Big Web Space

I have a site and I have a download section on it. The download section is already hosted by a different host company. I'm now looking for a different one.

The only thing is that I'm looking for a cheap hosting company with big web space where I can have all these stuffs files.

Does anyone here know a good one? The best would be within europe.

Yahoo Web Hosting - Big Name Worst Services
I bought a hosting package from Yahoo Small Business India.

Initially i was happy because the package was cheap and had good features. Database was easily set up I installed php admin tool also with one click install. No other packages are available. One has to manually upload and install.

I tried to upload phpbb but i wasn't able to upload some files. I emailed them and asked why the server gives an error while uploading .htaccess files, the reply was we don't support it. I uploaded it without .htaccess and installed it. I installed wordpess and wanted to have clean URLs but yahoo does not support mod rewrite. I don’t know much about php and databases.

9th July 2008: While I was learning I modified some tables due to which my database administrator permissions were lost. I was able to login using phpadmin but unable to create new databases and modify previously created databases and tables. I emailed customer care regarding the problem and got a useless reply on 10th July that I should change the password of the database administrator.

I changed the password but the problem was not resolved. On 11th I again emailed the problem in detail with screenshots to the customer care. On 12th, I got a reply “we have forwarded this issue to the technical team and we will inform you once this issue is resolved.”

On 12th I emailed to ask when the problem will be resolved but got no reply from them. Till date (15th July) the problem is not resolved. No one even wants to reply to emails.

See below my emails and replies given by yahoo customer care:

My email to yahoo customer care on 9th July:

I have some problem with database. By mistake i modified my original user name which i created while setting up the database. Now i can't access the tables that were created with previous user name. When i log in using phpadmin and try to see any tables i get the message. Access denied. Moreover, I also cannot create any new tables. I have NOT modified the yroot user;. Can it be recovered.
Please help.

My email to yahoo customer care on 10th July:

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your reply. I have already done that from database administrator link but the problem is not resolved. This problem has started since yesterday because of my mistake. I modified the original database administrator "user name" from the database "mysql". After modification all my permissions have lost. I have not modified the yroot user. So can you grant the administrator permissions to new user The problem is that after logging in using phpadmin i don't have permission to create a new database. The databases and tables that I created earlier are also not available to me. I am also attaching the screenshot (.gif) of what error i am getting. When i click any database in phpadmin i get the following message:

SQL query:
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `wpress` ;
MySQL said:#1044 - Access denied for user to database 'wpress'

If there is no solution then please reset the database, so that MySQL database can be set up again.
Regards,
(Vinay Chhabra)

Secure Web Space Costs
I'm working for an organisation which is looking for a company who can provide us with a public website to be updated with a CMS and 132 secure areas which should be accessible from that public website.

Today I was sent a proposal by them stating that there would be a cost per year of:

£3,350 for data storage areas of up to 20mb space per secure area (i.e. £25 per secure area)

£6,700 for data storage areas of up to 75mb space per secure area (i.e. £50.70 per secure area)

We really would prefer much more space per area than this (upwards of 2GB per area) and are a bit wary of how much is being charged for the storage space.

I have three questions on this :

1) How do these prices compare with other hosts that you know of? Are they reasonable?

2) Is this 'secure space' much more expensive than normal space?

3) Are there hosts that offer unlimited secure space for reasonable prices?

Btw, these are the facilities that this host provides:

6 redundant Internet connections
24x7x365 onsite support
Fire protection
Backup power generators
Daily back up to magnetic tape media
Anti virus protection for all uploaded content
Industry Standard Cisco firewalls

Web Space As Personal Backup
Does any reliable hosting company that offers hundreds of gigs space allow "personal backups", ie. non-web content? I've been looking at ToS of some big names but most if not all don't allow this.

It would be only 1-2 gigs, so I might get away with it anyway on most hosts, but would like to avoid problems in the future. Dreamhost offers both SVN and rsync, which I'd like a lot, but they clearly forbid such use.

And, I do have an external hard drive and very important files are also on DVD and memory stick, but since I need to purchase webhosting I'm looking at this extra option too.

Shared File Space For All Web Servers
Is it normal practice to have shared filespace that multiple web servers can access? Then I just provide my developers access to that filespace (one server, instead of multiple users on multiple servers) to manage files for different sites easily... right? (also meaning multiple servers can serve the same content)

So.. what would be the best way to do this? We're talking Linux systems here by the way. What sort of specs would such a server need?

I *think* it's NAS that I'm trying to get at.. unsure though if that's correct or not!

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal.

We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP.

The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401.

Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please.

I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews.
I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts?
I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them?

And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

What To Do When The Servr HD Is Not Big Enough
I am going to launch a site very soon and would like to get ready with any possible problems that could arise.

I have at the moment 10 000GB bandwidth and 1 server 8 core 2GHZ xenon with 4 GB of ram equipped with 2 HD of 500GB RAID 10 +a back up server of 30GB(at the moment).

I really need some expert advise on what I could organize or do if things pick up very fast.

I will be hosting mp3s and videos, my marketing will be pretty this is why I wish to prepare myself now.

I explain how the things work right now:

My website and database are on this server, at the start I will only have a shared 100Mbps pipe going through it with limitation of 10000GB for the bandwidth, my backups are done on a daily basis on the raid 10 HDs but only weekly for the remote(to limit the bandwidth usage).

What would you do if my 2 500gb HDs are not enough for the hosting?
The back ups are taking so much space that I am really scared to have nothing left very quickly. My back ups are incremental by the way.

Is it possible to have a database hosted on multiple HDS? for example 4 Terabytes space on 8 500HDs? Then what types of server do you need for this?

Also, I am getting charged a lot for my remote backups, about £70 for 30GB, would it not be better to have a second server linked to the first one via a LAN 100Mpb cable instead of using the internet bandwidth and host all my backups of this?

I do not understand why remote backups are so expensive with any host.

BIG Scalability
I have used this forum before to find good suggestions for VPSs, but now I'm in need of something that I have no idea where to go to to get the solution, or even what that solution may be.

First, my situation is this...

I've built a web application in PHP for an emerging company and it's primary function is to crawl remote websites that we are provided API access to (via lib_curl_multi). The company's clients login to their account and initiate the crawler on a domain of their choice that has API access. They are then added to a queue (to prevent abuse/server overloading) which performs the crawl. The crawl process takes anywhere from 1 minute to an hour and uses anywhere from 50KB of bandwidth to 30MB depending on the remote domain.

The client anticipates their first 3 months needs to be 1,000 crawls every 24 hour period, obviously meaning crawls would have to be done in simultaneous 'groups' to ensure all 1,000 in the queue can be done throughout the day.

That means for their first 3 months, they need bandwidth of about 10-15GB per day and I have NO CLUE what kind of hardware setup they'll need.

That's not really the issue though as I'm sure most dedicated server setups found here can support that. The problem is that after that 3 months they anticipate a ten-fold increase (obviously this would be a gradual build-up) in the number of crawls needed to be done daily, meaning 10,000.

Now that's a huge increase in bandwidth as well as CPU and memory needs. What kind of setup and/or host could accomodate this constant need for scaling without charging ridiculous prices?

My theory is there needs to be one dedicated server or VPS to serve up the website and its content, whereas there can be one or many dedicated servers (expand as they grow kind of deal) that process the crawler queue in the background (hopefully geographically dispersed as their clients are worldwide). EDIT: I forgot to mention that if the website server is separate from the others, they MUST share the same MySQL database as that is where the queue is stored.

I hope I didn't confuse anyone. I'm great with programming, but hardware and hosting's not my strong point so please let me know if you need clarification.

A Big Praise For ThePlanet
A few days ago my server started to receive a bunch of Input/Output errors. I scrambled all over Google to find out what the problem could be and most pointed to a failing hard drive.

I contacted ThePlanet roughly 4 hours after I first saw the problem and they recommended that run a few diagnostic programs on the hard drive to find out if there were any problems. I agreed and we picked a good 4 hour time frame to do the work.

Luckily for me this was the 2nd hdd on the server, but the downside was its a 200GB that I am using 165GB. So I tried to do backups and at about 35% done, the 2nd hdd became virtually unaccessible.

ThePlanet started the diagnostic at roughly 12:00pm PST and updated me nearly every 10 minutes on the progress. At 12:50 they indicated that the hdd diagnostic wasn't able to find any problems, then rebooted the server. I'm not sure what they did, but after the server came back up after roughly 5 minutes the 2nd hdd is working perfectly fine.

So i'd like to send out some praise as i'm very happy that the hdd is working again, and I'm happy with the updates and professionalism with ThePlanet.

I've had some rough times with ThePlanet, but the majority of my situations have been resolved in a timely and professional manner. Thanks again TP for saving my butt!

Importing Big Database
I currently own a gaming website, and it's database has about 70mb.

I'm changing to a VPS, so today i put the site under maintenance, uploaded the files to the new server, changed the DNS of the domain, and when i was uploading the database (Using PhpMyAdmin), everything looked fine until after like 1:20 hs, the window changed from the "uploading" status to the login page of plesk.

So i though "It must've finished"... but no, i logged in, and the database was empty, so apparently it didn't work.

Maybe because my internet connection isn't very good (640k) and a timeout occured?, idon't know.. but the thing is,

Is there a different way to upload the database that it isn't phpmyadmin?, or using it but uploading by small pieces, so this doesn't happen again... something like that.

I'd really appreciate different options, and as soon as possible, since i don't want to have my website offline for so long

Several Smaller Servers Or One Big
I am currently in the process on deciding how to expand a system we are running and got an offer for 2 different servers.

Now the first offer offers that:
AMD Sempron LE 1150, 512MB RAM, 160 GB HD

The second offer offers that:
Phenom X4 9500, 4096 MB RAM, 2x500 GB HD RAID I

Both with same setup (LAMP). Traffic is paid separately for both.

The first offer is about 5.5 times cheaper as the second of course.

Now my question would be, I got a spider that literally crawls the whole web which I wanna run either on one server of second offer or 6 servers of the first offer. HD Space is not an issue since the data will be saved anyway later on on other devices.

Now I wonder whether you would rather more go for smaller servers or for one big server for a script like mine, which does require rather little cpu resources on one instance but will of course - to improve crawling speed - run on several instances (of course on less per server when deciding on offer 1)?

Newservers.com - Big Registration
There are a couple issues here. When I registered for a server, I put in my credit card information wrong, meaning, I put in my new address instead of my old address.

As I go to process it, it says, Registration Error, could not process this request or w/e it said. So I remembered that my card was set to my old address and I put that in. Gave me the Registration Error again.

At this point, I was like, what's going on? I double checked everything and realized that I put in the wrong zip code. Fixed the zip code, processed the order, and then I was taken to the login screen or whatever, I don't remember.

(It's been a long day and night.)

One Big Server Or Several Smaller Ones
I've got an SSL site that needs to be able to handle as much traffic as possible within my budget.

Do I go for one big server or several smaller ones?

I'm looking at two configurations :

Option One

One big beefy server to handle IIS and SQL.

Dual Quad Core Xeon 2.5Ghz (8 cores total)
8GB RAM
Windows 2003 Enterprise
Gigabit connection

£339/month

Option Two

1. Load Balancer Server

Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz
1GB RAM
Centos with HAPROXY as the load balancer
Gigabit Connection

£89/month

2. APP Server 1

Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz
1GB RAM
Windows 2003 Server Standard
100mbit Connection

£64

3. APP Server 2

Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz
1GB RAM
Windows 2003 Server Standard
100mbit Connection

£64

3. APP Server 3

Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz
1GB RAM
Windows 2003 Server Standard
100mbit Connection

£64

4. APP+DB Server

Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz
3GB RAM
Windows 2003 Server Standard + MSSQL
100mbit Connection

£94

Total £375/month

Common sense might say that option two is going to be better but the amount of usable CPU is about the same. It's no more reliable because if the load balancer broke everything breaks.

Option two is also four times the management.

Aspnix Big Pile Of
We have been with aspnix for quite some time, we have posted good reviews about them, but now we advise everyone to stay away from them.

The History:

- 2 years with aspnix service, they had very good uptime but in the end we always known that if someday something went wrong it was going to be a real disaster, why? Because their supports its a big pile of crap.

- At the beginning we talked to ROMA that seemed to be the only living creature on that company but in the last time an other support guy called Azhar or Pazhar, something like that is the one that respond to questions (1 hour per day, sometimes less), his answers are always im going to send to admin, until now didn´t solve us anything, the best part is that everytime we begin a MSN conversation with him, he always suddenly stops talking and disapear specially when he really don´t know what to say.

- Aspnix has on the news they are going to develop a new website and some parts of the old one are going to be disabled, this is great new website (someday), the funny thing is that the first part to be disabled was the support forums

- Now the best part, most of our websites stopped working and has always we sent a ticket with no answer for 6 hours, than pazhar or something appears on the msn and says "i was out", mmm great, and about our website?? He says "the disk server crashed and we are recovering it, its going to take 3 days minimum" -- 3 days? After this he went away again.

Its really impossible to work with them, and if you have a client that really uses asp.net 2.0 or other windows server functionality, forget support, if something is not well configured the answer is always the same, we don´t support code. This happened us many times but when we move our clients website to another windows hoster it works perfectly.

I know there are many aspnix clients feeling the same, you can post here because their forum is dead and the same applies for their support.

Lunarpages - It's A Big Truck
Lunarpages - it's a big truck

I've been helping a friend with a site hosted at Lunarpages for a few years, a very low traffic business site in a shared hosting account, no real complaints.

But 48 hours ago they got an odd email from Lunarpages describing the relocation of their server to a new datacenter, which involved 3-4 hours of downtime to drive the server from LA to San Diego, plus another hour or so of setup.

Now this was confusing because I thought that the internet was not a big truck -- it's a series of tubes, right? In fact, I thought that the whole point of the internet was not having to move your data by truck. But hey, this is an inexpensive shared account, so maybe Lunarpages does move all their data by truck. Kinda short notice on that, but okay, fine. A couple hours downtime.
The website and email go dead at noon. The exact time was not announced in the notice, and mid-day mid-week seems like an odd time to deliberately schedule downtime, especially when it involves a long drive in traffic on the 5 freeway. But it is an inexpensive account, so... we wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Six hours later, we contact Lunarpages support asking what's up with the server. This being my friend's business website, business email, gone for most of the day. Was there an accident on the freeway? Did the truck driver get lost? Did the data end up in a cul-de-sac in Orange County? Were they stopped while making a run for the border?

An hour later, we finally hear back on the ticket -- Lunarpages hasn't heard from their "admins" (presumably due to a bad battery in their CB radio) but they hope to have things migrated "soon."
So we wait.

Eleven hours after the site and email went down, we send a reply on the ticket asking a few more questions. 1) Any update on that migration? 2) Could you explain this whole deal with the truck driving the data from city to city? 3) Do you have any compensation for ridiculous downtime?
An hour later, the Lunarpages reply: Migration done soon. Sorry for the inconvenience. No compensation at all, especially for "scheduled" downtime.

As of now, the server is still down and has been offline for about 14 hours. While I do hope the driver of the truck is okay, I have no such benevolent feelings for Lunarpages. When (if??) the site comes back up, we're transferring to a host that doesn't rely on the the LA freeway system to migrate their data. I hear there's this newfangled "network" thing the kids are in to. We'll probably try that out instead.

Lunarpages sure is cheap. And most of the time, they work okay. But you should probably avoid them if you value advance scheduling of downtime, rapid support, clear communication, or reliable access to your website and email.

NitroZone Goofing Big-time Again
downtime occurrances and e-mail outages with my NitroZone-hosted website isracoins.com are becoming a daily affair and a nightly nightmare.

I just sent an e-mail to NitroZone about my wish to terminate my 1-year hosting package prematurely after just 4 months. This bad hosting causes me too much headache, sleepless nights, as well as losses.

Pity that the NitroZone people, who appear to be reading these threads didn't even respond through this forum. I also never received any PM from them.

Sorry NitroZone, if this is the way you do business, you'll be out of business soon.

Plesk Migration Of Big Sites
I'm going to migrate my current web server to Plesk soon, and before I would like to know if I need a stable Internet connection to use the migration tool. My sites and databases are more than 5GB and my Internet connection at home is not very stable currently, so I would like to know if the migration stops as soon my Internet connection interrupts, or if it's completes automatically between the two servers once the migration has been started.

Backup BIG MySQL Database
What is the recommended method of backing up big MySQL database of size 2 GB ?

I checked the table, it is fine, but can't do the backup.

mysql> check table 10tir_user_group;

Hi,

1-We have checked and found your VPS was up with all services running fine. Then we checked for your VPS logs to find out any parameter being hit that caused the services to go down previously and found 'numproc' parameter was hit that was in OK state now however i have increased its value so that you may not face this issue further.

2- Please confirm if you want us to upgrade your VPS to cPanel11 version so that we may proceed further.

3-Please use the below IPs for your nameservers :

111.222.333.445
111.222.333.446

And use 111.222.333.444 as a main shared IP for assigning your domains.

Please let us know if you need further assistance.

Big Site Needs Separate Server For Mysql
my vbulletin site has been growing significantly and the server has crashed many times due to the high loads. My server guys tell me that mysql is hitting loads of 30 (not sure what that means) and i need to get another server for mysql alone.

They recommend that I shld go for raid-5 for the mysql server due to performance and redundancy. Thus if i was to upgrade now, I shld just go straight for a raid-5. Is that true?

Sending Big Files With Webmail And Outlook
I have WHM with centos and I have a customer who needs to send large attachments of 25 or 30 mb, he uses webmail. So the question is... how do i increase the load time?...

since i believe that is not a problem of data capacity... maybe his connection is too slow, and therefore he cant send large data.

And also how do i increase load time for the customers who use outlook aswell?

PostgreSQL, Big Disk, Modest Bandwidth
I saw the note about Request threads, but I've had no luck with the requester form or sponsors and my requirements are perhaps a little uncommon. I just opened an account with a certain host only to find that the inode thing will be an issue, so already searching for a new place. Recommendations?

I'm flexible on pricing.. up to $20 / month?

My sites:

3x domains
3x Gallery2 installs
20Gb total (~ 70k inodes)

REQUIREMENTS:

PostgreSQL *
PHP 5
30Gb storage (and no harsh inode limit)
5-20Gb traffic (typically closer to 1Gb, if that)
SSH & rsync

PREFERABLE:

PostgreSQL 8.x (many times faster than 7.x)
PHP 5.2.3+ (supports phpdoctrine)
Proper domain management (ability to add arbitrary records)

Server Crash On Big Sql Restore
I just got a new server the other day, installed cpanel and all my usual stuff in it.

Then I started transferring some accounts off my other server on the same network. It would transfer small accounts ok but I have this one big account,. the sql is like 300 mb. It would get to the restore on it then the server would crash and be totally unresponsive.

It has to be manually rebooted at the datacenter. There is nothing in any logs. At first I thought it was the load getting hi and doing it but I ran the unix bench and got the load to 14 and it didnt hurt it.

It only does this on restoring big sql db. At the dc they say the screen on the console goes blank.

Ive done looked and cant find anything in the box. Its actually the same exact setup I use for my other servers.

So the dc is looking at it today. Has anyone ever ran into a problem like this and if so what was the cause?

Big Thumbs Up For Rus And The Guys At Cheapvps.co.uk
Although I only ordered my VPS a couple of days ago I felt compelled to make known my initial thoughts on cheapvps.co.uk.

My main reasons for going for cheapvps was not only the cheap prices, but also the fact that a2b2 (a sister company of cheapvps I believe) and Rus appear to have very good reps here on WHT. I spoke to Rus initially via live help to ask a couple of questions and he was extremely helpful which convinced me to make my mind up there and then.

The VPS was set up and going within about 3 hours which is very fast in my book (I didn't get access to it for a couple of hours more but that was just because of an e-mail hiccup causing me not to receive the welcome e-mail). The speed is amazing - especially for a budget VPS. The network is also extremely fast, and the fact I got the choice of it being in the UK was also a big bonus for me.

One of the things that really impressed me though was when I started hitting a couple of snags when running a couple of programs, including Postfix (whose developers decided it would be useful for it to use literally about 90 unix sockets). This caused a problem for the resource limits in the VPS for sockets. Also the kernel memory limit was causing memory allocations to fail as well.

No sooner had I contacted Rus again than the resource limits had been raised to something a little bit more suitable. This also needed to be done for the process limit and file limit.

Tickets are answered very promptly and you can also contact them through MSN which I have made use of a couple of times.

Through this initial phase of getting the VPS running nicely Rus and the guys have been incredibly helpful and accommodating in getting things sorted. I would highly recommend them to anybody looking for a low price VPS, and although I know this is only after the first couple of days I'm sure things will continue this way.

How Big Risk Do I Take If I Don't Update The Kernel?
I'm a Windows guy and can little or nothing about Linux. How big risk do I take if I'm using a Linux VPS and never update/patch the kernel?

I'm using CentOS 5 and LxAdmin. I can update the control panel, but I can not update/patch the kernel since I have no knowledge how I do that.

I'm using a unmanaged plan, so no help there.

Some of my sites are running Wordpress, but I'm always using the lates WP installation. I not using any other plugins that WG2, Gallery2, and remove max width.

Nobody except me have access to the VPS, and I have no other FTP accounts or something like that on the VPS.

I have no other scripts or any kind of dynamic pages on my VPS.

What kind of risk do I have here?

I'm currently having plans to cancel my second VPS that's using Win2003, and only use Linux in the future. I can cut my monthly expensive with 50% that way, but do I take a big risk doing it that way?

CPanel Automated Backup Is NOT Backuping One Big Database
i recently find out that I don;t have an database backup for one of my biggest websites.

The database I'm talking about has 228 tables (198.6 MB)

In the backup file I only get this :

-- MySQL dump 10.11
--
-- Host: localhost Database: lxxxxxxa_sXXXl
-- ------------------------------------------------------
-- Server version5.0.45-community-log

/*!40101 SET @OLD_CHARACTER_SET_CLIENT=@@CHARACTER_SET_CLIENT */;
/*!40101 SET @OLD_CHARACTER_SET_RESULTS=@@CHARACTER_SET_RESULTS */;
/*!40101 SET @OLD_COLLATION_CONNECTION=@@COLLATION_CONNECTION */;
/*!40101 SET NAMES utf8 */;
/*!40103 SET @OLD_TIME_ZONE=@@TIME_ZONE */;
/*!40103 SET TIME_ZONE='+00:00' */;
/*!40014 SET @OLD_UNIQUE_CHECKS=@@UNIQUE_CHECKS, UNIQUE_CHECKS=0 */;
/*!40014 SET @OLD_FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS=@@FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS, FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS=0 */;
/*!40101 SET @OLD_SQL_MODE=@@SQL_MODE, SQL_MODE='NO_AUTO_VALUE_ON_ZERO' */;
/*!40111 SET @OLD_SQL_NOTES=@@SQL_NOTES, SQL_NOTES=0 */;

The other databases I have tried are all ok, but none is this big. Is there any size limit ?

I have uploaded an printscreen with the setings of my WHM.

Port Speed: Big Difference Inbound Vs Outbound
I am moving into the world of dedicated servers (from VPS). I just got a server from Serveraday.com /OLM.net.

When I was doing bandwidth tests, I found the server's inbound speed was much slower than outbound. I tried downloading a bunch of different provider's 10MB test files from the command line of my server using wget. They were all around 20-30 Kbps.

When I take those same 10MB files and serve them from my dedicated box, the results are much different. My server can push the files out at over 1Mbps.

Why would my server be set up this way, and is this normal behaviour? I sent a ticket to OLM, but their support seems to take a long time. So I figured I would bounce the question off of all you here on WHT

Windows Program To Display Big WARNING If Computer IP Is Not As Expected
I have some customers who use a VPN to connect to the internet securely. (They live in a restricted country.)

So when they connect to the VPN, it gives them a new IP, and when they go to "whatismyip.com" it shows the IP of the VPN server, as expected.

The problem is that sometimes their IP changes back to their local ISP without any indication. The VPN still appears to work (green lights are displayed in the VPN icon in the sytem tray), but their IP is now the local ISP providers, which means they are not fully "protected" any more.

And that is bad.

So, what I'm thinking is to find a Windows program or script or something that runs every x minutes.. and checks to see what is the current IP. If it isn't as expected (the VPN server's IP), then a big red warning window would start flashing on the screen, so they can then reboot or restart the VPN.

Does anyone know of such a program?

(BTW - they are using openVPN, latest version. And yes -- it works properly 99% of the time.. but for some reason the IP just changes back to local ISP for no apparent reason. The log does not show any errors or helpful indicators.)
