Getting Loads Of Unique Visitors From Italy On A Domain Not Used
Jan 19, 2009
I was just looking at awstats for a domain that is not in use and only got a max of 10 visits a month till October 08.
Now since November 2008 I have been getting a lot of unique visitors from Italy but there is nothing on the domain, no folders or files.
Here is what AWStats say:
Nov 08: 710
Dec 08: 1593
Jan 09: 4243 (so far)
These are unique visitors 99% coming from Italy
What do you think going on ?
The domain in question is testingurl.com

I have what seems to be a simple redirect question. I have a dedicated server and a few static IP addresses, but I want to make it so if someone were to type in my IP address in their browser, Apache will redirect them to the domain name. (Typing in [url]
What happens now is that if you were to type in my server's IP address, it will show you the FIRST VirtualHost container that's listed in httpd.conf. This is not so bad since I've placed my main company site at the start of the list, but I'd rather redirect the IP into the domain name I use.
I read somewhere that you can place Mod RewriteRules directly in the VirtualHost container rather than using .htaccess, but the few "rules" that I tried didn't seem to do anything. And yes, I restarted Apache each time I edited httpd.conf.
Is there an easy way to do this?
ALSO, is there a way to redirect the name server address too? If you type in [url]into the browser, it acts the same way. I would ultimately like to redirect both the nameservers and the IP address(es) to the domain name.

I need web hosting that I can put 10 sites on with unique ips that the host provides.
How can I find someone who does this here on WHT?
I already have two accounts with other hosts like this but like to break things up through different hosts.
Please advise who would be good for this for $30/mo or less.

We're actually hosted at site5.com and our 7 wordpress blogs (+1 wp-mu) get about 2500 unique/day... blogs uses a lot of plugins and costumization, but i think we shouldn't have problem with such number of vistitors.
[about 20gb transfer per month and 1 gb disk space used]
Customer service sometimes write about mysql load, sometimes complain about server problems and so on... we're thinking about move somewhere else.
Of course we don't want to move to something like dreamhost and have the same problems after a couple of months and we're not rich, but:
- our readers are mostly italians, so we'ld like to move somewhere in europe, but european services are expensive
- we need mysql/php/... bla bla usual stuff
- we have a lot of domains for underdevelopment projects
- we gave a try to MT gridservice but it was really slow
- we need ssh access
- we don't have time to manage hosting configurations and so on
- we need a reliable hosting service but we aren't google.com
- we can spent AT MOST 20$/month
which you think can be the best hosting service for us? is better to think about a VPS solution?? managed bla bla bla service?

I have a VPS from KnownHost for about a year for developing purposes. Great place to go for VPS's, by the way.
Anyway I just installed a game server on it and now the loads are about 0.5 when I do a "top" command.
Should I be worried? The server isn't really used for anything right now, that is why I am using it as a L4D server. Max 8 people on it.

I was wondering about a specific VPS package I was considering. I have around 80~90 sites (and therefore accounts) that I need a nice place to call home, but I am wondering if maybe I would be asking too much of this VPS package:
40GB Disk Space
1000GB Transfer
P4 3.2GHz
800MHz Front Side Bus
1GB Guaranteed RAM | 2GB Burst RAM
CentOS 4
50% of CPU Guaranteed | Burst to...I don't remember.
All of the sites I would be hosting easily take up less than 100MB of space each. The most any of them use is 2-5GB of transfer. I know these levels are no where near my allotted resources, but do you think that serving 80-90 accounts like this is too much server load? There will only be 2 VPS' on each server, guaranteed.
Anyone with experience with a VPS and a decent set of accounts/domains, please let me know what you think.

I have a new website that has a similar feature to tripadvisor's Reviews, where users share detailed thoughts and experiences. They fill in all this information on one form so there is no interaction with the system while they are writing.
I know Apache has the TimOut setting which is set to 5 minutes by default. This ensures that you do not have users using active memory and sessions for a long period of time.
But the problem I have seen is that some users are spending 15-20 minutes writing very detailed experiences and when they hit the submit button obviously their session has timed out and they lose everything and get a system error.
I really don't want to change the TimeOut value in Apache to 20 min due to resource constraints, but is this my only option?

Got a bit of a debate going here because I have a site that is showing wildly varied results for traffic between different trackers.
The three we are watching are:
extreme paid version
awstats
webalizer
Extreme shows 70k uniques for this month while awstats is showing 16,555 then to make things even more confusing webalizer is showing 22564.
So that leads us to the question, what exactly is a unique and is there really any precise definition of how a unique should be counted. is it:
1. one unique IP visit for the whole site
2. one unique IP visit per page on the site
then on top of that we have to factor in the time frame so now is it:
1. one unique IP visit for the whole site per day
1. one unique IP visit for the whole site per month
3. one unique IP visit per page per day
4. one unique IP visit per page per month
Now some may say the above is being picky BUT how many site owners do you hear saying "I get 100,000 uniques per month". This comment alone begs for an answer to this question. I don't think I have ever heard someone come back at a comment like that with "Really, How do you count your uniques?"
With all the trackers out there and all the companies that are relying on accurate statistics to sell advertising and / or value the site this is one of THE grayest areas around ......
So again, the question is:
What the heck is the definition of a unique and for that fact is there one?

which hosts offer unlimited or to "x" amount of unique ip address per shared hosting account
i liked hostgator, but they didn't offer the free unique ip addresses... which are needed so i can add ssl certs to my domains (ecommerce sites are what i plan on launch)... not all domains need a unique ip, just 3-4 per account would be nice...

I've been doing a lot of research for webhosts lately, and that is how I found this forum. I'll cut right to the chase.
I'd like to order webhosting for my small business soon. My requirements are:
UPTIME, PHP, MySQL (basically, it just has to support Wordpress for now)
Storage isn't a big deal really, but I'd say we'd need at least 50 gigs just in case.
Most hosts seem to be pretty generous in that department.
Traffic is my biggest concern. The business will not be very active until August, when traffic should begin to increase at a rate we just cannot predict. Should an event happen (like being Slashdotted), the traffic could be insane because we would be most likely hosting video content (not adult content). I can picture the overage charges now, and it would be a nightmare. That is what I'd prefer to avoid.
I've looked into Yahoo and their promise of "unlimited" bandwidth. I'm thinking that might be the best choice at this point. It sounds like they will throttle your site but you won't be hit with any overages charges so I'm OK with that. I am not worried if MS buys Yahoo.
Which hosts would you recommend though? My budget is $0-25 per month until the business grows. Then I may consider VPS and dedicated solutions, but that is for the future.

I normally don't like too bother others with my problems but this time It seems I have no choice since I spent the whole afternoon trying to find out what the problem was and couldn't solve it "entirely".
Here's some hardware info:

Processor #2 Name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 3050 @ 2.13GHz
Processor #2 speed: 2133.418 MHz
Processor #2 cache size: 2048 KB
Memory Information Memory: 1031324k/1048320k available (2182k kernel code, 16308k reserved, 914k data, 240k init, 130816k highmem)
System Information Linux **************** 2.6.20-1.2320.fc5smp #1 SMP Tue Jun 12 19:40:16 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Running Fedora Core 5 and working for over half year with almost no major problems, but today something totally weird just happened...
After waking up I logged to the server and realized how slow it was, I went to see more about that and for my surprise the loading was around 8 so I went to the mail queue to see if there were a few thousand mails, there were 16 mails... So I went to the see CPU % processes at WHM and I was stunted to see around 30 processes allegedly using over 11500% of the CPU or more!
My first thought was that cPanel smoked something before releasing a last update and I didn't realized it immediately so I downgraded from Release to Stable.
Nothing happened and I lost my time with this overheated overloaded and over-everything and I didn't changed any configuration.
I changed many old configs that... I don't know, might crashed with something that might changed... I was trying and looking for anything.
The load was getting up instead of down, it went up to around 60.
The final conclusion is that whenever I turn the MySQL on I got overwhelming loads otherwise the other services "only" give me around 1.5 of load but still very unstable.
I'm getting a little tired so my explanation may be a little confusing, sorry about that.
Anybody knows what this is? Did this ever happened to you? Extremely high loads without an obvious reason? If anyone could help me I would be thankful for that, I'm getting kind of desperate.

I have a server running SUSE. dual quad core chips, 16 gigs of RAM.
It's a webserver only running Apache.
We have been having a problem the past few days where page loads take forever yet CPU load and RAM load are very, very low.
I've noticed when it happens when viewing HTOP that TASKS jump from about 350 average to 1000 average. Pages won't start loading until this number drops.
I see no errors in error_log or messages however restarting Apache seems to fix the issue?
I've tried messing around with KEEPALIVE settings with no help.
Any clues on where to start? Pretty lost on this one becuase I see no errors and the load both CPU and RAM are low.

We are having a problem with our Linux dedicated server. At time we are getting high server loads witch is causing the server to go down and reboot. This problem has been going on for over a month now and still liquid web can not tell me what is the cause of the high loads. We have upgraded our RAM to 2 GB. This look to fix the problem for the first week but now we are back to having high loads and downtime.
I'm not a IT person so do not know how to find the problem. Can anyone tell me what I can do the locate the problem. I do know how to access and do some things in the root but do not know enough to find and fix this issue.

has anyone else noticed an unusually high load occurring from 9 till 11 EEST time on their servers?
I've been getting high loads everyday this week at exactly these times.
I'm thinking that this is a crawler/bot that is causing the loads, i've already installed dos deflate and there hasn't been more than 100 connections from the same ip, so I'm ruling out any DOS attack ... besides, what kind of attack only takes place for 2 hours a day at exactly the same time?
I'm on a cpanel system and would like to know which logs to take a look at to determine the cause.
