FluidVPS/Fluidhosting 6 Month Review/history

Aug 2, 2008

Before I start on my review, I would like to say that I am not affiliated with FluidVPS in any way and am solely doing this because I would like to share my experiences with everyone.

I was one of the lucky few to be able to get a 'Free VPS' from FHDave (Fluidhosting) as part of their new promotion of upgrading hardware nodes.

My VPS has the following specs:
512 MB memory guaranteed
25 GB disk space
500 GB transfer bandwidth

When I just got my VPS I installed various applications such as Shoutcast and Tomcat simply because I could and I love it how it is automated.

My first ticket was a problem getting Shoutcast to work, and so I contacted and placed a ticket. Even though my free VPS was unmanaged, I still got them to help me which resulted in a simple restart of the server.

All was good for a few weeks until my forum was hacked one day (my guess was a weak password and some skiddie got access) which caused damage to my forum. After getting pretty worried I contacted Fluidhosting to find out if my VPS could get hardened I was prompted to pay since my VPS was free, it was 'unmanaged'. They did link me to their knowledgebase for tutorials and I applied them. Thinking it was enough I gave a sigh of relief and carried on with my life.

2 weeks later I was prompted with my VPS becoming compromised (someone hacked the VPS and used it to host an eBay phisher). Even though I had been told my VPS was 'unmanaged' they helped me with getting my VPS reprovisioned. I changed all my passwords to numbers and letters and that was the end of that.

I did have some problems with their Parallel Power Panel and HSPC although I cannot link it to the hack attempt. What happened was I was unable to restart the VPS and it would fail making my server go down. I submitted a ticket as well as contacted their live chat service and they tried fixing it. It didn't work and had to get help from the developers of the panel. However after a few hours my VPS was back! (I was asleep when it happened )

There were times during my hosting where my bandwidth had nearly been used up and my webspace being completely filled. I have found that some hosts oversell their resources and when you haven't used a quarter of the limit they suspend your account. This was not the case with Fluidhosting. My VPS was often always full and yet there was no problem. I have even used it to host torrentflux for my own usage and that was fine too.

There were times such as the VPS being compromised where Fluidhosting and their staff could have just suspended my account for good, and left me because of my website being too much trouble. They stuck with me to the end and helped me all the way. Their support is quick and helpful (gets the job done, real initiative there) and their live chat isn't just a salesperson.

My past 6 months was one heck of a journey, and it would have not been possible if I had not gotten a top notch service provider from Dave and the team. Thank you for an awesome opportunity to try out VPSes for a change. Once you use VPSes there's no going back!

I will be paying another 6 months with you guys (if all goes well at my end).

Sorry if this isn't quite 'a review', more like past history of my webhosting

So in short:
Service: 9/10
Resources: 10/10
Support: 9/10
Uptime: 10/10

Db Migration

Jun 19, 2009

I am planning to move host of my friends to another server, its un-managed

he asked me to restored db , as he is running an IPB FORUM, I thought I would use the vbulletin docs of backup and restore as I use these typically for most of the scripts and I never had a problem.

these are the vb docs based on moving into new host and restoring:
[url]
[url]

I have the code to do it, but the problem to understand is the following:

when I am in totally new host,

do I NEED to create new database either via ssh or control panel and give that name in the ssh code or ?

do I need to give the old dbname that was used with previous host ?

its too confusing for me, consider me as beginner @ database transfer on a new host and help me in detailed explanation.

I have done restore on same server but never done for any one to restore on a different server

Migration To VM

May 24, 2008

I've been getting frustrated with my hosting provider, and after doing application development and sysadmin for a while now, I'm ready to have a go at doing it all myself on a VM. I plan on migrating my site to the new server and when everything is set up, pointing my domain to the new name servers...

My question is - what's the best order to do things to minimize downtime? Can I set up email, MySQL, Apache, DNS etc before I have the domain pointing at the new server, while still being able to test adequately? Would I just set up the services and test them using the IP, then once I'm happy with everything, setup DNS, point domain at new nameservers, then change all configs to use the domain name rather than the IP? In theory if it email etc works with the IP, then the name server change shouldn't matter because it will resolve to the IP...

Migration Testing

Apr 21, 2009

I am migrating my website to Hostgator, and before I change the DNS entries, I want to make sure that everything displays properly. To do this, I have added an entry into my /etc/hosts file pointing the domain to the new host. If I then ping the domain, the reply comes from the correct IP address. However, if I try to view the website, it is still served by the old host.

I thought it might be a caching issue, but I have checked with wireshark and using curl, and it is definitely connecting to the new IP address, but the server that is returning the pages is still the old one. I've contacted hostgator support, but when they make the changes to their hosts file, it loads correctly. Is this a local problem (my system), or something with their server configuration?

After Forum Migration

Jun 26, 2007

I transfered my forum from one server to another. ips changed. Before the transfer, I closed the board and put an announcement. After the transfer I opened the board and started posting.

Now, there are other members who've posted after the transfer but I've noticed decrease in activity. One of the members emailed me and told me that the board is still closed for him with the announcement shown. That message is from the old and not the new server. So how is this happening? What should he or I do? I and some other members can access and post normally.

The forum is is the one in my sig.

Just see if it's closed for you or not.

Plesk Migration - What About DNS

Nov 29, 2007

I will be migrating my VPS over to a new VPS (same provider) which has Fedora 6 instead of 4.

Anyhow, all of the IP addresses will change on the new VPS.... so while the migration process via. Plesk should be fairly straightforward, I'm a bit worried about the DNS. The DNS is managed by Plesk and will continue to be managed by Plesk, but again it's the IPs that I'm worried about.

All of the hosting accounts on the current VPS use the nameserver "ns1.citedata.net" and "ns2.citedata.net" as well as their associated IP addresses. Although the nameserver domains will remain the same, their IPs will change.
