Jan 4, 2007

Can someone tell me how to clear the history of a UNIX user? For example, when logged in as a certain user I can press UP to see the last commands that were used. How can I get rid of them?

FluidVPS/Fluidhosting 6 Month Review/history

Aug 2, 2008

Before I start on my review, I would like to say that I am not affiliated with FluidVPS in any way and am solely doing this because I would like to share my experiences with everyone.

I was one of the lucky few to be able to get a 'Free VPS' from FHDave (Fluidhosting) as part of their new promotion of upgrading hardware nodes.

My VPS has the following specs:
512 MB memory guaranteed
25 GB disk space
500 GB transfer bandwidth

When I just got my VPS I installed various applications such as Shoutcast and Tomcat simply because I could and I love it how it is automated.

My first ticket was a problem getting Shoutcast to work, and so I contacted and placed a ticket. Even though my free VPS was unmanaged, I still got them to help me which resulted in a simple restart of the server.

All was good for a few weeks until my forum was hacked one day (my guess was a weak password and some skiddie got access) which caused damage to my forum. After getting pretty worried I contacted Fluidhosting to find out if my VPS could get hardened I was prompted to pay since my VPS was free, it was 'unmanaged'. They did link me to their knowledgebase for tutorials and I applied them. Thinking it was enough I gave a sigh of relief and carried on with my life.

2 weeks later I was prompted with my VPS becoming compromised (someone hacked the VPS and used it to host an eBay phisher). Even though I had been told my VPS was 'unmanaged' they helped me with getting my VPS reprovisioned. I changed all my passwords to numbers and letters and that was the end of that.

I did have some problems with their Parallel Power Panel and HSPC although I cannot link it to the hack attempt. What happened was I was unable to restart the VPS and it would fail making my server go down. I submitted a ticket as well as contacted their live chat service and they tried fixing it. It didn't work and had to get help from the developers of the panel. However after a few hours my VPS was back! (I was asleep when it happened )

There were times during my hosting where my bandwidth had nearly been used up and my webspace being completely filled. I have found that some hosts oversell their resources and when you haven't used a quarter of the limit they suspend your account. This was not the case with Fluidhosting. My VPS was often always full and yet there was no problem. I have even used it to host torrentflux for my own usage and that was fine too.

There were times such as the VPS being compromised where Fluidhosting and their staff could have just suspended my account for good, and left me because of my website being too much trouble. They stuck with me to the end and helped me all the way. Their support is quick and helpful (gets the job done, real initiative there) and their live chat isn't just a salesperson.

My past 6 months was one heck of a journey, and it would have not been possible if I had not gotten a top notch service provider from Dave and the team. Thank you for an awesome opportunity to try out VPSes for a change. Once you use VPSes there's no going back!

I will be paying another 6 months with you guys (if all goes well at my end).

Sorry if this isn't quite 'a review', more like past history of my webhosting

So in short:
Service: 9/10
Resources: 10/10
Support: 9/10
Uptime: 10/10

Unix

Aug 13, 2007

Ive recently switched from PC to OSX, i now own '2' Macs, a laptop and a G4 Quicksilver, although its CPU speed is slower and the Ram is lesser then my old PC, it performs much much quicker and more efficient.

The question is, i'm a web developer, i know very little about the back end goings on, such as System Administration, but i've got a few books on the subject which are aimed at Unix system administrators. Does UNIX cover both OSX and Linux (Debian mainly).

Eventually i want to be able to run my own server, i own a debian dedicated server, but its not my own, its the datacenter's and i dont really know enough to get down and dirty in the back end. Id like to be able to set up servers from scratch in the long run.

So would learning UNIX cover both OSX and Linux, im not bothered about Windows, i don't plant to use a Windows machine again.

Redirect Domain/user To User.domain ONLY IF Folder 'user' Doesn't Exist

I thought I knew enough about my .htaccess stuff to do this, but I can't seem to work it out. What I want to do is if a user visits domain.com/folder, we check to see if the folder exists. If so, show as normal (IE domain.com/support)

If a user visits domain.com/dynamicusername (dynamicusername is not a physical folder), redirect to dynamicusername.domain.com

SERVAGE.net Stay Clear

Jul 8, 2008

I'm having the very same problems as everyone else, and after a quick google it seems I'm not alone. Servage just keep fogging me off on the support over there dreadful MySql performance.

Getting the same old rubbish as everyone else, we will move you to different server, we will fix your database etc. When will servage stop blaming there customers and step-up admit there is a problem and fix it? The support is fast but there just monkeys repating the same as the last.

I have been with them for 3+ years now, and this will be the last. Just put a request in for a full refund of this years fee's. The 1st year maybe the 2nd there service was excellent, since then its got worse and to a point now where its dam write criminal to charge people for what they offer.

Do your self a favour people stay clear of this company it has wasted alot of my time.

GeekRack.net - Stay Clear

Mar 14, 2008

I recently bought a small company from somebody i knew, the server they had was with GeekRack. So we moved everything over to our name and everything was fine for the first week or so, i then ordered a new server from them so i could run shoutcast from however they installed the wrong OS and refused to refund us or pay for the reload fee. So i quickly cancelled that server.

After that issue things started going downhill, nobody would answer our tickets about moving the server away from them so we could get it from our reseller account with BurstNet. As soon as we mentioned we were moving they just basically terminated all contact with us. They failed to mention two different abuse tickets to us which ended with the data centre disconnecting the server on two separate occasions, both times the server was down for more than 2 days. The server was also going down every night and when we asked them to take a look they never answered.

We finally got the server moved away from GeekRack and now the server is running fine and have had no problems. So this is just a word of warning to anybody that is considering GeekRack as there provider.

Preferable *unix For Web Server

May 22, 2008

I`ve been playing with Debian and FreeBSD for couple weeks so far. As a noobie I`d like to ask you what distribution you prefer for web server? I know that it is said "the best is the one you know better" but in my situation it is hard to say that I really know either Debian or FreeBSD.

So what would you recommend in my situation (new to *unix topic) if I have to set web server for a company site?

I`m mostly interested in security, relatively easy to configure/secure/find info how-to, easy to update soft apache/php/mysql.

Dumb Unix Permissions

Mar 2, 2007

I'm a Unix newbie so please forgive me if this is a really dumb question but I haven't quite been able to figure it out...

I'm trying to set up a form script to replace formmail on the server. I've set it up in the cgi-sys bin. I chmod the script 755, but when I try to call it I get 500 error messages.

I was looking at the permissions and I noticed that all the other scripts have the "wheel" setting.. such as:

197633 -rwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 3479620 Dec 22 03:04 _formmail.cgi*

The new form I added as "root" instead of "wheel":

1280150 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 12342 Mar 1 21:46 mycontactform.pl*

How do I change it so that "mycontactform.pl" is in the "wheel" group so that it works? Anything else I should know/do to make this secure? I don't know enough about the permissions to change this. I want all the customers on the server to be able to use the new form.
